Norton's insanity case did actually reach court. During his acquittal, the judge said (paraphrasing) " he has harmed no one, attempted to conquer no country, and oppressed no man, which is more than can be said for most in the emperor industry."
What a chad Judge
@@adeade3978fr
I love your pfp.
@@Molech996 thank you kindly.
I’m surprised sam didn’t mention this but Hawaii actually recognised Norton as the emperor of the USA
I like how islander miles away say he is emperor of US while I doubt his story would go to SF nearby states
Hawaii really just didn't give a shit did they
Just Noob
Exactly what I was thinking, pretty bold for an island to make that claim when they only became a state 80 years after he died.
Yeah, before Hawaii was flooded with American immigrants who overthrew the government.
He was also listed in a census with Emperor as his occupation
He was originally going to get a beggar's funeral, with a cheap casket in a poor grave. However, business men set up a donation which ended up getting him a very fine coffin and an estimated 10,000 people, all of various social classes, showed up to his funeral (Wikipedia). Dude was a legend.
And the day after his funeral, a solar eclipse happened over San Francisco
@@garretteulett8600 guess he got a metaphorical moment of silence from the sun as well
@@GearShotgun even god thought he was a meme
@@gyisdoingstuff9561 He was THE meme.
@Cyn1k. cal OG meme
I believe he also at one point declared himself 'Protector of Mexico'.
America-Mexican Commonwealth!

What's next, the berlin-ottawa axis?
Yep, he did that after one of the Napoleons invaded Mexico.
@@ms_scribbles Actually he ceded his title to Emperor Maximilian but took it back after he was murdered by Republicans
Fun fact, at the time, Joshua Norton was the only United States "official", the king of Hawai'i, King Kamehameha (the fifth if I remember correctly), would speak to; he refused to recognise the US State Department.
OMG, that's brilliant.
But how did he go to know of Norton's existance?
@@EclipseSeth My guess is that people coming to and from hawaii would frequently stop in San Francisco, hence some diplomats potentially hearing of Norton. I also suppose that the King of Hawaii respected Norton's attitude based on his diplomats reports(although that's just my guess).
King Kamehameha? Were his parents Dragonball fans?
@@JesseGolo no the Kamehameha was named AFTER him.
@@haha-lj5sq that's a fun thing to brag about

All hail Joshua Norton the emperor of the United States.
And Protector of Mexico.
@@LarsBlitzer truly he was a great man so kind and so generous he was truly one of a kind.
@@reygonzalez4719 I imagine Norton making it to heaven and just walks up to god like" no, me god now."
THE GOD EMPRAH PROTECTS
LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR!
So I googled "emperor norton toys" and found two cute examples, one is a cloth doll and the other is a lego model of him riding a trash can as a throne with two dogs pulling it like a charriot. Seems even today he has a lil bit of a fanbase!
Could you imagine this guy being your history teacher, and not knowing he was a youtuber with 230k subs...
The real life version of having a superhero alias :)
224k yes I’m that person 🙃
Michael Jordan bro Michael Jordan definitely “took that comment personally”
@@riot2136 well it's fun to know some of his students watch him, so he gets a pass (if he's being honest)

He also had more attendants at his funeral than Abraham Lincoln.
I forgot that Sam O' Nella didn't upload for........5 months. I missed that deranged stick man
Think something happened to him?
Well that's what cannablism does to Man.
That's why I only eat chimps.
School stuff most likely David. If I remember correctly, he does chemical engineering at Uni of Tennessee or something like that.
@@bluetie1058 college happened
He is deranged
He trolled a whole city.
Definitely my emperor
He did more than just trolling. During the era of racial division and discrimination and a country at the brinks of civil war, he kept on breaking up fights in San Francisco, and called on abolition of slavery and racial discrimination.
@@LibeliumDragonfly That's what I read! Sam should've brought it up.
8:25 That's absolutely true. None of the locals in San Francisco calls the city "Frisco". Only tourists do that.
10:42 He's talking about the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is between San Francisco and Marin.
You beat me to the @10:42
It's worth noting, however, that there is a medium-sized city named "Frisco" (not "San Francisco") in Texas.
Well there currently is a petition going on in California to get the Golden Gate Bridge renamed to the Emperor Norton Bridge. You should look it up, it's pretty funny honestly. 2022 is when it'll be decided although, I doubt it'll work
Don't call California Cali either. I don't know if other Californians are as bothered by this, but I sure am.
@@natestickeler924 Most Californians say "Cali"
Norton once stopped 2 mobs going at each other by sitting between them
It's actually a mob of anti-Chinese immigrant rally about to attack a Chinese residence. For a guy who lived during and before the abolition of slavery, Norton preached racial equality far earlier than a lot of the "icons" we are more familiar with.
The mobs actually were going after chinese american immigrants.
Norton also once broke up a lynch mob by standing in between them and their victim and repeatedly recited the Our Father until they dispersed.
Knowing what Norton has done, yes I would see him as my emperor
hail the great emperor Norton
Story says it that more then 30.000 people did attend the funeral of Emperor Norton, even if a thenth is the truth that is still VERY impreiisve
*t h e n t h*
_i m p r e i i s v e_
That was totally true, Mark Twain was a loyal subject of Norton I. He ruled over the Bay Area for more than 25 years, a lot of the kids that followed him as his entourage were grown up adults at that time.
Just imagine if a childhood icon of yours died and you have the opportunity to go to his funeral, would you not?
They still hold celebrations in memory of Norton in San Francisco still. What a legend
He also stopped a race riot, by getting in between the white rioters and the Chinese people they were going to attack, and recited the Lord’s Prayer until everyone left.
God rest, Emperor Norton I. God rest.
Long may he reign, Norton emperor of America and Protector of Mexico
fans of the Sandman graphic novels know that Joshua Norton's declaration was all a result of a wager between the Endless.
Mr. Terry: Today we are headed back to everyone’s favorite channel which is the Sam O‘Nella Academy
Everyone: Agrees
It’s been a year since you joined UA-cam and you already have over 200k subscribers. Keep it up man!
Thank you!
Mr. Terry History it is absolutely well deserved.
@@MrTerry Will you react to epic history WW1 1915 soon??
I love Joshua Norton's story, I first learned of it by reading Neil Gaiman's "the sandman" he has an entire number of that graphic novel dedicated to the story of Norton.
Haha! I was thinking about Neil Gaiman's take on this story! What a great graphic novel The Sandman is.
He also declared himself "protector of Mexico"
San Franciscans weren't just like that in the 1800's we're still like that today, he's still well known to this day and there are tributes to him around the city, and there have been multiple efforts to get the Oakland by bridge renamed after him.
I heard the insane king of Switzerland was the eternal emperor of the USA
Is that a DREW DURNIL reference
@@Gex324 I thought it's fitting ;)
insane COMMUNIST king
A video about Billy Joel's song "We Didn't Start The Fire" would be awesome. There's a video out there someone made that shows historical photos for every reference too.
I actually knew about Emperor Norton before seeing this video. I learned about him by reading Neil Gaimans The Sandman. Also, super excited about that upcoming adaptation.
I feel like every town has that local celebrity to varying degrees. Usually someone that does something weird and most people are just like "oh that's just ---, he always does that"
He missed the parade in his honor after he died. Then the second parade in his honor when the moved him from San Francisco cemetery to his current resting place in Daily City. It the the cemetery behind the Home Depot pro store. Though never married the grave next to his has the name The Empress on it.

Sam also forgot to mention that Norton subsequently declared himself "Protector of Mexico."
Ah. You finally found Joshua Norton. He was a beloved man. Just an interesting story.
I think the key to an effective declaration is action.
If you declare something, but are unwilling or unable to take action to support your declaration, then your declaration was pointless.
It essentially boils down to "okay but what are you gonna do about it"
Only Sam O Nella reactor who plays his sponsor reads.
Much appreciated
I wish you were my history teacher
Hey Mr. Terry. Thank you for your awesome videos! Also just wanted to give you kudos for letting the original content creator’s sponsorship ad play all the way through. Props to you good sir *tips hat*

Love your videos! Keep the great work up!
As a reddit user, thats about accurate
Yup, that's why I try to avoid the more toxic subreddits
Yuck
Imagine having a history teacher that’s a gamer and does UA-cam. This person is probably the most chad out there when it comes to being a history teacher
I remember putting this into video-suggestions on discord.
This is one of my favorite stories

As a Canadian yes i Would absolutely recognize him as Emperor of the US
Love how he gives support to the original creator channel before his.
First heard this on the Weird History Podcast....love this story and fellow Bay Area legends Bummer and Lazarus
As someone who uses Reddit, Sam has accurately represented the general populace of Reddit.
As Sam hasn't put out a video in 5 months and as I have watched all of his videos (I know, it's sad) I shifted into watching you watch Sam O'Nella.
It's strangely entertaining and informative.
Finna thought he was wearing a klondike cap for a second there.
Edit: also on the topic of jacksfilms i just noticed that sam put "me me big boy" when not accuratly quoting norton.
I wish this guy was my history teacher. Like for real. Mr. Terry is such a cool guy.
The world would be a much better place if all history teachers were like this
Mr. Terry makes history fun. I mean it is, was and always will be interesting but not fun. Thank you Mr. Terry.
Could you react to Extra credits "First Opium War" Your comment on opium reminded me of it.

In essence, Emperor Norton was just a popular San Francisco citizen whose reign was only "acknowledged" in the city.

Epic, I love Sam O’Nella vids!
Who doesn’t???
Joshua Norton: the florida-man of California
As a San Franciscan, I can confirm that this guy actually is in fact, a legend
The bit they left out was that the journalist who first published Norton's story in the SF Chronicle was Samuel Clements. AKA Mark Twain.
I saw a band called Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band and they were hilarious
Joshua Norton had it pretty nice for a destitute. Free transportation, "tax" money (handouts), and basically it was his "payment" for amusing people to hell and back, even though he was quite serious about the matter and believed it. People knew he was a bit loony, but they liked it so they played along.
“Declaring something doesn’t do anything”
First thing that came to my mind was Michael Scott
“I declare bankruptccyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!”
he’s supposedly been working on one for months now...when it drops hopefully it’ll be fire
would be great if u want to react to some other videos non related to history from sam o'nella like "journey of a beef cow" or "true stories about chimps"
This man is my new hero
I need some cans of Fukitol right now. I really can use a plenty of those.
Not only was he recognized by both King Kamehameha of Hawaii and the then King of Brazil as the Emperor of the US, he also sent letters to both Abraham Lincoln and the Queen of England that they had then responded to.
Emperor Norton! We still know about him here in the SF Bay Area. He always fascinated me. And it was less people just toying with him to make fun of him, and more that he kinda became San Francisco's unofficial mascot. You gotta remember that back in those days, San Francisco was quite a wild place in the mid 19th century, with an area called the Barbary Coast, and places where you could literally be shanghaied if you drank at a bar too close to the docks.
And yes, don't call it Frisco. Also, don't call it San Fran either. It's San Francisco or The City. That's it.
Mr T. And Sam O’Nella are a great combo.

In defense of Reddit, as a Redditor, I'll just say... yeah, that's most of the big subreddits. You just really have to find the stuff that doesn't deal with that or isn't psycho-militant.
