      @proudloudandwellendowed3497 10 років тому +23

      I'm not the only one who does that :D I save fuel usually, since the fuel I would spend on orbital corrections goes towards slowing me down.

    • @daraptor0
      @daraptor0 10 років тому +24

      I find the most efficient way to go places is to skip stable kerbin orbit. I can to the Mun faster and cheaper just flying straight at it.

    • @Xishnik94
      @Xishnik94 10 років тому +1

      the only reason you'd ever want to use orbits in this game is to go to mun, or minimus if you're lazy and don't want to wait for first time alignment. Every time you make an orbit you are wasting fuel for a Vx velocity rather than a Vy velocity to escape kerbins orbital space.

    • @beamboy14526
      @beamboy14526 10 років тому +78

      Pavel Ilyukhin That is incorrect. I used to think that flying up straight would save me fuel since I did not have to expend horizontal velocity. But after studying and reading about orbital mechanics, I realized I was wrong. There is this thing in physics called conservation of energy, so when you orbit kerbin and perform a hohmann transfer, the the horizontal velocity you previously expend adds to the velocity of the burn.
      Flying straight up is very costly and inefficient. This can be easily demonstrated in the RSS mod: You can perform a normal launch and spend 10km/s worth of delta-v to orbit earth and another 6km/s on a hohmann transfer to successfully reach lunar orbit. However, if you simply point your rocket upwards with 16km/s worth of delta-v, it will only reach a few thousand km, then fall back towards earth.
      This is because every second the rocket is pointed upright, it loses approximately 9.8ms^-2 worth of acceleration to earth's gravitational pull, whereas in orbit, you do not have to expend a single drop of fuel to fight against gravity.

    • @daraptor0
      @daraptor0 10 років тому +1

      The Great of Beam
      Well, I dont go straight up, I go at a 45 degree trajectory when the mun is at about 60 degrees and this will bring me straight towards the mun. It may be more efficient too establish orbit, but I find its easier for me this way, and using the exact same rocket to get orbit then transfer out I find I dont make it as far, but I may be doing it incorrectly.

    Guys... Guys. I'm seeing a whole lot of dismissive sneering comments about how in efficient it is, or how it could be done better. And sure, there's a lot to be said about having the understanding and precision of engineering to do something "the right way".
    BUT, having the determination and the special blend of madness to do something undeniably the wrong way, *AND THEN SUCCEED ANYWAY*. That, in my eyes deserves genuine respect. It's the Kerbal way. Did no one notice that this thing had 108 stages? Can no one appreciate how he delivered and then launched a craft from Eve, larger and heavier than many that leave Kerbin?
    All the elitists here trash talking this and dismissing it for inefficiency, would you still say such a thing if Jebediah was there to hear it? When did you people lose your green googly eyed souls? This is Kerbal art.

      Nuclear engines have crap Isp in atmosphere though... and they are heavy and low thrust. Eve has higher gravity too... Nuclear engines are not the way to go. Try either the aerospike or the rockomax radial engines. Rockomax are surprisingly efficient because they weigh almost nothing, giving you massive delta v. aerospike are brilliant in eve's thick atmosphere.

    • @carbon1255
      @carbon1255 9 років тому

      TheLaXandro Yes, otherwise all my rockets would launch with a massive amount of nuclear engines- it is still more efficient despite it's massive... well, mass. Rockomax little red radials are the second best though, their raw inefficency is more than made up for by their lack of mass and thrust to weight ratio. So even in atmosphere they do pretty well, depending on your design. Good luck, have fun, and fly safe.

    • @retvolki
      @retvolki 9 років тому

      TheLaXandro They are not good inside atm because they are not powerful, inside the atmosphere you want to reach the escape velosity as soon as possible and with nuclear engines it will take quiet some time.

    its a design that makes the rocket more and more fuel efficient as it flies and detatches rockets (takes fuel from outer most rockets first, and drops them when they run out of fuel, keeping maximum weight/thrust ratio).
    he's also managed to keep everything pretty stable, there's no torque, so the craft isn't spinning faster and faster (which would spin itself apart eventually).
