In my experience, steep jumps and dirt jumps are a lot more predictable than bikepark style flat / long jump. And you can’t really be surprised by a jump, like you can get on a fast trail.
Thanks for the positive spirit. I have no problems with tech trails and I worked my way up to moderate sized jumps too but I'm getting frustrated with steep jumps. They are so hard.
Thanks for this vid Matt! This subject is where I'm at with myself. I want to take my dirt jumper on the bigger stuff but those walls are what's next for me to progress. And sadly I don't have any friends to learn from, I'm the first of my group to be pushing these kinds of things.
I find absorbing the lip loads on the first try has given me confidence on steep lips in the past, it means you get a lot less air time and just get to landing fast. More chance of crashing I guess but less scary.
I'm in the process of learning how to hit steep jumps. And lucky for me there's a pump track by the jumps so I can warmup before I commit to the vertical lips. It's really rewarding and completely changes my perspective of mountain bike jumps. One of the spots I go to has a one hit step up jump, you can get that vert lip feeling over and over.
Great insight ! I'm no pro, but I've noticed you just have to get used to going up..before you go down. Pushing through steep jumps to start then figure out height bit by bit
Thanks for the video! I am nervous to try this stuff but I really want to get into it. I just don't understand how much speed I really need for these different types of jumps.
Hey Mark, could you do a tutorial on the Vinny T style scandy roosts in tight S berms? I can't for the life of me seem to figure them out, they are opposite techniques almost used in rapid succession.. There are no tutorials on it out there and even though it's not necessarily a trick, it opens up a lot of different ways to ride a trail not only faster but with more style.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..
@@MarkMatthewsMTB That would be amazing! There is something about those lofty exits!! Looking forward to being up at my sisters in Bellingham this summer. Can't wait to check out the local trails! Up for a road trip?! Haha
I would recommend going to a skatepark on a hardtail or bmx and learn how air a 1/4 pipe. It will help you understand transitions more and his nosing in will become a natural and relaxed feeling
I really have a problem with one big and steep jump it‘s like 2,5 meters high or even higher and the takeoff is probably around 75- 80 degrees at the end. I have hit the jump a couple of times but I really can‘t clear it. I have the exact same speed as my friends who clear the jump but I am really struggling with not casing it. Does anyone have any tips that I can try to clear the jump?
Learn how to ride a 1/4 pipe at a skatepark. Once you can understand steep transitions, steep jumps are a breeze. It's a skill many mountain bikers lack but it helps a TON!

True it’s more consistent much of the time
completely different in my experience, probably because i got into dirt jumping after already hitting big jumps on my full sus
Even more hyped to go to Dyfi Bike Park next after watching this ! Awesome!
Sick! Stoked it’s helpful for ya

Exactly what I needed to watch right now. Taller jumps are what im working on rather than flat gaps.
Nice!!

I hope this helps give you some good direction! Thanks
Yes true, I would recommend committing and popping instead. Always safer and more chill that way.
Sick!!! I’ve sent this to my friend who was a little worried about hitting steeper jumps. Love the vids :)
Awesome! Hope it helps them. 🤟

Sick lesson the Cumberland dirt jumps are sick!!!!!

This was a great video. Concise. Makes sense. Thanks for sharing all the tips! I really like the turning the bars one.
Glad it was helpful!

Commitment over everything. You have to want to go high in the air. People overthink jumping way too much

YEsss this is what I needed!!

Thank you 🙏🤟
I was just looking for this yesterday

Cool idea! It’s a big part of how you enter the corner so you can square it off. I’ll think about this more for a tutorial!

Such a great explanation !
That’s awesome!

Hello their. Can you tell the difference between high rise handlebars and low rise handlebars in dirt jumping? What are their differences handling?
It’s personal preference. Try them both! I like a 30mm rise
@@MarkMatthewsMTB thank you for the info.
