Even back in the day, he named Call of Duty as game violence he didn't mind, but that for instance GTA glorified and normalized bad violence.
Which sounds a bit like saying "why would you wanna chose whatever car you want and instantly start a race in whatever country at death-defying speeds, when you could play Truck Simulator and do an honest days work but without the pay?"

Well he was a fully funded NRA straw man (I think that's the term), a political lobbyist paid to fight a parallel or opposing agenda to facilitate a narrative.

This is not character growth. This is the same Jack. He is still against the same things he was years ago. He is just reframing it and focusing on the positive things he can say, while the negatives go unaddressed, unrefuted, and unchanged. Look at his understanding of the medium -- portraying visual fidelity as a supposedly vital component in teaching, when there are countless non-game applications with no significant visuals to speak of, which help countless people develop useful skills like speaking a new language. He STILL thinks that the realism is what pushes people to reenact what they see on the screen. He STILL thinks the medium is just a pedagogic tool in disguise. And he's wrong, and has been for decades. He's just saying, here, that the pedagogic tool is good, actually, as long as it's used for good ends (which, I'm sure, are the ends he personally approves of, including the banning of GTA so it doesn't "mis-educate" people).

Well. Thompson is finally fully support of games ever since he left Attorney job. He had his journey to understand Video games. His "Hatred" of Video games was supposed to be his last lawyer challange: make game industry adapt on self regulation( hince he only targeted GTA series). Jack Thompson was a high ranking successful lawyer at the time, once the video game industry booming from "Violent games", he decided to tackle the topic "Video Game regulation" by making example from Rockstar. During his campaign, his college at US goverment, proposed him a bill to "Ban Video Games". But he denied the bill, because he's a high ranking lawyer & good lawyers don't stood this low to "Make new laws that benefit their cases". In late 2000s, he realises his limits & endid the campaign, leading to his retirement.

    • @AzraelThanatos
      @AzraelThanatos 3 місяці тому +1

@@justsomeguywithlasereyes9920His main issue is obsession, it kind of became his personal crusade.
Honestly, I think that Columbine and the entire fucked up Doom mod those psychos had was what started him down the path (They built their school as a map for doom and labeled it as training...which is either even more fucked up or it was a way to hide it from parents there).
I kind of compare him to Frank Millar in a way...Frank was mentally fucked up over 9/11 and went off the deep end, Thompson saw Columbine and did the same there.
And at the same time, when he was starting, you had things like Mortal Kombat and similar where the marketing was the "realistic blood" and over the top fatalities which had required massive modifications to come to home consoles at the time, which made things worse. GTA's series had so many things with it as well, and there was the entire sex and violence thing through it that comes off as extremely creepy to hear people talk about it if they don't know what you're talking about, and even then that's somewhat unsettling considering the setting there.
Jacks crusade kind of ended up with him in massive trouble over it with the eventual disbarment and collapse.
While you can't find much about it now, it's very interesting, if you can find it, to see peoples reactions when he defended the original Mass Effect due to the "Ass Effect" scandal with some idiots claiming it included a full sex simulator in the game with full, controllable nudity and that the game was being marketed to kids, then Jack starts calling them liars over it and saying that he actually enjoyed playing it and their accusations didn't fit it, his only complaint is that they could have toned down the violence, but that it was a game marketed towards adults and there was no more sex or nudity in it that you'd see on network TV...
But a lot of the violence part had him semi-disturbed, and I believe that being in an enforced time out kind of settled him out more since, well, he got what he was really aiming for to a major extent.

If you look into what he was actually doing and saying at the time rather than the cut down news bits, he never actually was going with all games are violent, it was mainly the more violent side of things and that they were being marketed directly to kids. That video games are more marketed to a lot of different groups and most places have purchase restrictions on the games of the level he was talking about, his actions are a bit more nuanced even then.
Sure, he was a massively overzealous pain for a lot of things as he went all in on it to his and everyone's detriment, but there was definitely more to his views than had been in it.

Wow this is so unexpected but good for you Jack. Almost as if he looked back on the actions he took, the things he said, and decided: “Y’know maybe I was a bit too harsh on video games.”
Another thing that’s wonderful about video games is that they’ve come a long way in telling a story, the kind you would see in books and movies because like them, video games are an art form. Whether it’s playing an arcade game for high scores, again telling a great story with thought provoking themes and well written characters or getting together with friends for multiplayer sessions or playing online with strangers, video games have only grown and evolved since the NES. These games are relevant because big names Nintendo, PlayStation, Steam and even Xbox keep gaming alive that’s open for discussion, criticism and creativity.
So Jack, thanks for looking at this art in a positive light

Many games make gender a taboo word, so you gotta dig to find the balance of male and female for custom characters, minus the ole boob sliders I enjoyed with phantasy star online and the Sims (that also did weight sliders many don't have).
Then of course they lay off a ton of people, have currency and other overpayment dlc scams in annual fighter/sports games, or dlc that needs you to beat the game for the right to unlock, like horizon (all choices but not one for not being a lesbian lol) or strangers of paradise ff origin (marvel ultimate alliance 3 needed you to progress a ton and I cant unlock phoenix as the gauntlet is too tough even afte beating the game and paying for dlc). Yep, looks like an old man trying to rehabilitate his image so that his place in history won't be just a villain. Too bad though because I can draw a line right from his crap right to where the industry is now. You get all the credit Mr Thompson, everything you wanted you got. You get to lie in that bed now.

Honestly, with Jack Thompson, this doesn't surprise me.
His entire thing was on violence in games marketed to kids, not games entirely. He's pointed to games that he thought did things right and even defended games from entirely unfounded accusations.
A big example of things was with the "Ass Effect" Scandal where some idiots were running around saying that the original Mass Effect included a full on sex simulator and a few places tried to use Thompson's presence in it and he went all in on blasting the people making the claims as being liars and went on to say that he enjoyed the game, there really wasn't anything visible, and his only complaint was in the violence side of things, but it was a game properly marketed to older audiences.
The big issue with him was that he became obsessed with proving he was right which led to questionable situations that got him in trouble.

In another class I used Universe Sandbox 2 to teach my students about our Solar System. One of them had tears running down his eyes when I blew up the moon and its debris devastated Earth.

I think even before he was okay with games that were non-violent, though.
Wasn't Jack Thompson's crusade about trying to tie real life violence to video games that have the player simulating violence?
He probably has similar viewpoints on anything featuring violence with the belief that humans are susceptible to a "monkey see, monkey do" mentality rather than an actual human being mentality.
Now in regards to games being an educational tool, one has to consider that all children who survive long enough eventually become adults.
Should we really be hiding things that exist in the real world from anyone on account of age when ultimately everyone should learn and know about these things existing by the time they are adults?
I saw a video of an alligator eating a turtle and while it was somewhat disturbing (a lot of gore), I feel like I am better off by knowing how that happens rather than by not.
Would JT have the same opinion about a graphic and realistic educational video game where you play as a carnivorous animal and the goal is to reproduce and survive?
