- We will be using Ammonium Chloride and Thick It to create a Charcuterie Board -- I will give you recipe and we will cut the stencil out of glossy vinyl. Using this technique will give you crisp lines!! We will then you a easy press to burn the wood, to prevent scorching.

Great video. Very succinct. I would like to give you a bit of advice that might help you going forward with your burns on different species of wood.
I am a woodworker and have done many wood projects such as cutting boards, charcuterie boards and the like. At any rate, before I apply a finish to any of my works, I wet the wood several times prior which helps raise the grain of the wood, then I follow that up with sanding. I do this a number of times until the grain no longer swells, at which point I sand at a high grit which helps tighten up those porous areas, which I believe will prevent your wood from bleeding as you burn the chemical.
Every species of wood has a different grain structure make up. Some are large (oak, ash) while others are smaller (walnut, maple), especially in hardwoods. I can't guarantee that this will be 100% foolproof, but I really believe that it will reduce significantly any kind of burn bleed. I would try a scrap piece of wood first to see the result. I used a heat gun and decided to put in the oven on broil. Ready in a couples minutes. Turned out perfect.

Thank you! Have you tried lightly heating your vinyl after you have put it down on the wood? I have done this with slate drink coasters and it helps the etching cream not to bleed under the stencil.
I will give it a shot next time i do this! I normally get impatient & don't!

I did not sand the bamboo first - it was already really smooth being a cutting board. I would sand anything rough before doing this -It’ll really bleed if you don’t!
Not sure if you'll see this comment but how long does the paste take to dry usually? Mines been on for at least a few hrs and still tacky. I did wipe extra off. Ive been trying to get these to work for me but no luck. Today is the first time using these chemicals. I originally tried with Torch Paste.
Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I did this in the fall when it's fairly dry & I feel like they dried with in a hour. Granted, it's been a while since i made this video but I am not remembering any big problems getting them to dry. Granted I live in the South, so if I had been trying this in July, it might have been a different story!!
It looks pretty good. Have you tried the stencil vinyl from Sillouette instead of the 652 vinyl? It might work better.
I have the stencil vinyl and I have never really liked using it -- But that is really personal preference!
Thank you for making this video! I love the option of using the Easy Press instead of a heat gun. The videos I've seen using a heat gun state you need to do it outside because it gets smokey. Looks like you did this inside, does it not smoke when you use the Easy Press?
I'm glad you liked the video! I have done this with this mix and the marker, with a heat gun and the easy press -- never had any of it smoke! So yes, I am doing this inside my house. I like the easy press because it's easier to keep it moving around to prevent scorching of any one spot - which is really easy to do with the heat gun.
Are you able to use the cutting board after burning, to serve meat and cheese on? After applying the cutting board oil and wax? To display your work while serving.

Blahahaha! This made me giggle!! Yes, it's food safe! Just know that after you scrub it really well the design does get a bit lighter, so darker is better! Also I have never put oil or wax on them but I would think it would fine too.
Do you ever get light/ ashy looking spots?
I have not gotten that - what kind of wood are you working with? Could it be variations in the wood grain itself? Those are bamboo cutting boards, wonder if the cheaper wood works better!

Hi- love this alternative to traditional wood burning- which I suck at! How does the cutting board wash up? Do any of the burned areas flake or fade? Or are these things just ornamental? Love your clear explanations, too. Thank you!
Totally a useable cutting board! It does fade a bit when you really scrub it because some of the burn comes off, so I would suggest to go darker rather than lighter when heating it up. Still readable but just not as dark. Also wash & scrub before using! I’m so glad you enjoy the channel!!
Do you put anything over it to seal it?
I have not put anything on it seal it, but it will get some lighter after repeated scrubbings. You can seal it if you'd like to.
Can you use a household clothes iron?
You could try it -- I have never tried it so I'm not sure.
