You want to lean away from the hill, not into the hill. Leaning into the hill increases the angle between your tires and the ground which decreases the surface area contact between the tires and the ground, making it much easier for the bike to slide-out.
Extra tips? Is it possible? LOL ... you mastered them all ... I'm amazed, and thankful, I've been learning things, that I never knew existed !! I ride by experience but this vids really make my ride easier and comfortable ... Thank you so much !! Cheers
Go with the bike, don't fight it, often what you think is too much sliding isn't going to end badly if you panic and brake that wheel - front or rear will slide down the slope, if you need to pull up just back right off the throttle.
great video, Looking ahead and not down right in front of your fender is HUGE- its called destination fixation, the human tendency to ride where you look
Another great and timely vid. Was riding some single track on a slope two weekends ago and had a little tumble. Luckily, I managed to save the bike from getting scratched on a huge rock by getting my ankle between said rock and bike. Not broken, but still limping like a guy who thinks he can ride dirt! :) With the aid of your vid I am now able to pin point exactly how much I suck at this.... However,I would suck even worse if not for you vids! Keep em coming! :)
It's interesting how it seems that some riders feel they have more control standing up as oppose to sitting down. That's how I feel anyway..although I'm about as gumby as it gets haha. Might just be me learning!
Another awesome vid with great advice! I got a chance to put these tips to the test in Lesotho on the Roof of Africa routes and they really do make a big difference.
Love the videos keep it up theyve helped me learn alot hopefully you can come to the uk at some point to develop your traction skills and water crossing skills
CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS if you ever do and want to do some legal trail riding get in contact with the trf they will take you where you want to go by legal trails and keep you on the right tracks so you dont get in trouble. i learnt to ride with the help of them and these videos my videos are proof of that and theyre a non profit organisation they just use the money to keep the trails legal to use and open
i am new to the whole bike scene ( been on quads and snow machines my whole life ) and find it so hard to be standing while riding i am 6'3 and 250 lbs and i am riding a 02 yz250 , any advice on that ? it just feels like i have way less control over the bike
Evan Giguere yeah that's a common feeling. Standing now will help you be better in the long run though. I cant imagine trying to hop a log or going over big rocks sitting! Just practice standing as much as possible on easy terrain that you feel comfortable on, that will help you get used to it and then be able to stand on tougher terrain. Also, GRIP WITH YOUR LEGS, that is what makes riding upright so useful, you can move your body independent of the bike if you grip with your legs and move around. Good luck!
How much of this apply if you have like a falling zone on one side? I find myself more often that I like in the position where you have a tight camber and the downhill is simply a cliff with rocks waiting for ya. In that case you really don't have much luxury of sliding the rear.
absolutely minimum wheelspin in that case, baran. if it's really risky i am usually walking the bike through if i can but then i'm a chicken with lots of things lol.
Thanks man. Would you lean the bike while walking in that position? Because you can put your foot only uphill and leaning the bike (and weighting the downhill side) sounds like it will make rear slide.
You are contradicting yourself in this video as you say standing lowers your center of gravity, but on the video stand or sit you state sitting lowers center of gravity which is incorrect.

Nothing like a single track off camber, with steep drop off to get the blood pumping :)
The measure of a good ride is how many arse puckering moments don't result in death or permanent injury.
it's better then sex.

great to hear, makes it all worthwhile :)
These videos are so useful! Barry, you are the king of excellent tip videos! We're going to go practice this and the short practical wheelies today.
cheers tyler, you know i just steal all these tips from your vids so i hope you got it right :)
keen to hear how you go with the wheelies!
Holy shit that Tim Coleman off camber wheelie is amazing to watch!
one day he shall shed his outer skin and reveal the alien within
Lol love the cigarette ad!!!

yup, road riders here call it target fixation :)
Cheers for the tips! I've always felt a bit uneasy on off camber sections.

glad to be of service... i just hope the info is reliable as some of this i didn't run past tim coleman first for accuracy lol
Even if it is a bad idea, it's still better than my no idea! :)
Excellent! Thank you for posting!
Another good technique to try this sunday. Thanks Barry.
Thanks for doing a vid on this type of situation, it’s very common where I ride
a pleasure kevan!
I really have no thoughts, lol. Never came across this situation yet. But when I do I will give you my thoughts. Thanks for your knowledge......
steep rock slants it is actually better to lean to bike away from the slope so the back wheel does not slide out
Great video I'm often sitting that tells you my skill level.

Momentum is always your friend
I laugh uncontrollably every time you say "it gives me the willies" 😂😂
deep down i think i say this because i'd really like to have something larger than a micro willy, joe
CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS I feel your pain mate 🤣

would love to get to the UK nayr but very expensive in my current situation

Barry, anyone, how do you feel about off camber abilities of a trials tire compared to an enduro FIM, such as a Mitas EF-07, or a Metzeler?
Can’t wait for you to do a review on the the Harley enduro rxt950 that’s just been released
Off camber riding is always a tricky one especially when theres slanted wet roots or lots of pine needles covering everything giving you no traction

already done a vid about bike setup for tall riders evan :)
Kiwi havin a laugh 😂
Love your vids. Keep them coming!
Great video I'm going to practice that

You are the best
I assume you are talking about Tim's stylish riding in this vid, Pat.... he's not too shabby at all!
Great as always 👌
Great vid! thanks Barry!
Interesting....
great video...thank's much :)
Whats that thing on the left lower side of the bike just in front of the engine that looks like the radiator has a beer holder?
William Leitzell that’s the pipe guard
oh, hahaha. ok not used to seeing those here in so cal as a trail rider
Barry is Australian... of course it's a beer holder.
it can also hold rum and cokes
hahaha I find it so hard to stay OUT of ruts sometimes with this.
When in doubt, throttle out!
Barry is the OG Gumby
jossss
😳 Tim Coleman 😳
Whaattttt ? Did you paint your Beta in orange ? What's up Doc with your bike ? Did you win loto ? 😂😎
my old trusty 250exc from a few years back, gilles. well trusty except for that terrible old starter motor they used to use.
and if your bike is not a 2 stroke, you give that baby max gas and hold on.
well the obligatory second
Here's a tip: don't look down....
Just a thought Barry. If you replace motorbike or parts of motorbikes wording, the explanation works for sex as well!!! love the vids
weight, deweight, weight, deweight.....
You are contradicting yourself in this video as you say standing lowers your center of gravity, but on the video stand or sit you state sitting lowers center of gravity which is incorrect.
there are massive debates on this martyn which i won't go into here. even physicists find it hard to agree lol.
Another dodgy video? ME LIKIE!
So you're saying throttle out when in doubt don't work? haha
Noice
Just wheelie everywhere = maximum possible traction...duh
Your rear trail tire looks totally pox!
