It's funny, this is resonating so hard for me. I've been bothered by my phone use for years and have been implementing changes over time - greyscale screen, little notebook and all. Yet it's still an issue. I have now invested in a paper planner, a filofax type thing with a zip around it where the phone lives... that way, if I'm opening that thing up to get to the phone I might as well write in it; write down what it was I was going to look up / do on the phone, as I can probably do it later. That way, the kids see me write stuff down physically rather than on my phone. Like you, I need a smartphone and I need to be available, periodically checking messages, but the amount of times I pick up the phone because I'm bored or uncomfortable needs to be greatly reduced / eliminated. Thanks for the tips, and all the best to you!

I love your setup of having the planner and phone together! It is definitely a learning process to figure out what works for us individually.

Thank you for sharing these tips, Jessica. I was actually considering getting a landline so that I can put my phone away entirely while at home during homeschooling, family time, etc.

We've loved having one for our kids to use! I just need to do the final step of giving select people the number so they can reach me that way too.

Great info and suggestions. But it’s hard for me to balance not having my phone home just a phone because I film 100% and editing on. I will have to think through this one???!☺️

The purpose for me is that even when I got on my phone to do something productive, I would undoubtedly end up going down a rabbit hole and wasting time on my phone. If that isn't an issue for you, or you can isolate and remove the distraction, then the phone can still be an awesome tool for other things too!

I'm struggling to decide to be on my phone less. I have a 3 year old and a 18 month old. It's so much easier for all of us to be on screens than it is for me to figure out what to do and then work thru the 3 year old's meltdown and the 18 month old knocking down or messing up whatever activity we're engaged in. 😫 It's so dang hard to be productive or have age appropriate fun that I also think is worth the struggle of making it happen.
I've tried so many Pinterest activities that my kids don't engage in.
After a long day at work, screens are easier. Not better. But definitely easier. Why give it up entirely? What's the value of choosing the harder thing? I struggle to see the value.

Thank you for your thoughtful question. I think it comes down to what do you want that time to be? If you don't feel like it is a problem and is working for you, great! We can let things be easy. But if it isn't working, or if other essentials aren't happening they would make life easier even if it takes more effort to get going, then it's a good moment to pause and consider options. All screens aren't bad - my kids love watching movies too - but when it starts getting in the way of us taking care of our minds, bodies, soul, and spaces, I want more boundaries around screen time.
