The Eye of the Python

  • Right! Stop that! It's SILLY! Dear friends, if you're not familiar with the timeless genius of Monty Python then this one might be a bit over your head. It's an adaptation of the following classic sketch:

    -----------------
    I got the idea for this from, unsurprisingly, reading Richard Dawkins' The Greatest Show On Earth. Particularly the chapter which deals with the enormous amount of evidence pointing to life having NOT been designed by an intelligent agency, given all the incredible design flaws that can be seen throughout all of biology. The vertebrate eye is a very good example of this, for the reasons you can hear herein.
    I usually like to give detailed references where I can, but the research for this one was just a wild goose-chase around the net picking up bits of info here and there, mainly from Wikipedia. So: tough, you'll have to take my word for it.
    Yes, yes, its all a bit exaggerated. I am very grateful for my eyes and am in fact one of the lucky ones who cannot complain of any eye weakness of any kind. So far.
    ONLY MONTY PYTHON PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO DMCA ME ON THIS ONE. AND IF YOU DO, GUYS, CAN I GET THE COURT PAPERS AUTOGRAPHED?! I definitely won't put an ad on this one, its definitely NOT exclusively my own material!

      If the eye is so badly designed then build you own and put them in you head I mean it's all random anyway right I mean we're intelligent with a purpose to show we all come from random acts with no intelligence or purpose so does that mean you're argument is random with no purpose as well? This reminds me of where the bible claims that painful childbirth is a result of "the fall" Eve's curse. I wonder how any intelligent person can even believe that these days. The reason why it is painful is because women weren't designed to push something that big through their pelvis. The fact that childbirth has always been dangerous for a woman is a clue that this is not the best design. But evolution does not care about the "best design" as long as it is not a complete disasterous design. Despite the problems with the woman's design, most women survive childbirth so the human race is not in danger of becoming extinct.
    Now Christians might claim that as a result of "the fall" Eve's design was changed. But that would be adding something to the bible that is not there. That is often what Christians do to try to make a text make sense.
    It is the same nonsense when Christians claim that before "the flood" all animals were vegetarians. That would require a massive redesign of an animsls digestive system, teeth, claws and eyes (hunters have forward facing eyes plus if they hunt a night their eyes can reflect light back to increase their vision).
    In fact if there were no predators then herbaphores would not need to have eyes on the sides of their heads in order to see an attack coming.
    But logic and common sense fall by the wayside for the "believer"

      @gameinsane4718 5 років тому +4

      Jillian Smith actually I’ve been arguing that for a long time. My favorite tangent (if I’m remembering it at all correctly) went a little something like:
      If Eden is now heaven and we’re not there but on earth as a separation from heaven until a pre-determined time when we have the chance to return, that makes earth a multi-generational, inter-dimensional prison, where the entire population of the specie is to suffer upon birth due to the actions of 2 individuals who only received the original sentence due to actions coerced from them by an agent of the highest authority (going off the assumption that as God has a master plan that’s impossible to break, and that he requires Satan as a loophole for evil to exist for some reason so he may tempt and test our faith and virtues).
      It’s a broken system, with absurd rules, run by the most corrupt being in all of fiction. That last part is more relevant when you consider that in literally ALL our media where there’s elves, aliens, and whatever else… humans suck entirely bar their ability to rise up and overcome insane odds. That’s like HALF of all fantasy and sci-fi. We’re made in god’s image, but our minds are LITERALLY wired like that of Satan who was the FIRST to have this mindset

They recommended dog-like legs and feet, kangaroo pouch (instead of deadly child-birth), re-direction of some pointless blood-vessels, remove unnecessary bones, and change the eyes so we don't need all these lights. We have a blood vessel that for no discernible reason goes up through the neck and back down the neck again. I am one of the biggest Python fans in the world and this was fantastic.
    I am sure that the Pythons would love it too. Most of them seem to have lost a lot of their respect for the church perhaps because of that famous debate over the banning of the Life of Brian. That was like one of NSC's parody interviews.

    @goldenrebel1st OK, well I'm afraid you have me there.
    However, I might suggest that an infinitely powerful being capable of doing absolutely anything he wanted wouldn't necessarily need to do it that way, and it is certainly interesting that if it is designed, it is designed in exactly the way we would expect if it were NOT designed. !!
    As for the rest of the design faults... surely you wouldn't argue that they're the work of an intelligent designer? The retina I'll give you, but a blind spot?

    Upside down relative to the direction the light falls on the light receptive cell region. Which means, you actually see the world upside down, which the brain however aptly manages to balance out. (Note: if you don't believe me that it is your brain doing the trick, there are special glasses you can buy which turn your vision upside down. Give it a few hours, you'll see upright again, and when you remove the glasses, you'll have everything upside down again for a few hours.
    Try it)

    An omnipotent / omniscient / omnibenevolent being would create the maximally loving world supremely possible, as defined by his characteristics. which would be contradicted by a poorly designed eye, especially since theists argue that we are the pinnacle of creation. you cannot have your cake and eat it.

    @IMAHMS Play is also a computation (their brain knows it is good to learn to hunt and socialise with group). Learning and understanding - its just intelligence, it has nothing to do with conciousenss and free will. I know it gives the impression of free will, but it's not. And to conclude it with one sentence: yes, I can make computer love/hate, play, learn and understand. I just can't make it able to disobey his program, just like animals (and most humans) can't disobey what they feel.

    I don't see the upside down image issue, as that much of a case against intelligent design. Sure it is interesting how the eye works that way, but it is very common in designed systems to do software offsets and software negation, in the event that the hardware produces a negative result or a shifted measurement.
    By using our brain's "software" to reverse the image we see, this allowed the eye to be built with one lens instead of the two that would be needed for using "hardware" to correct the image. If you were building a digital camera in the same manner, you would likely not want to buy multiple special lenses just to flip the image, when data processing software can do it much cheaper in an economy of scale.
    Unlike the human eye, real cameras don't work with flexible lenses, because our technology can solve this with two fixed shape lenses instead.

    • @codykaufman8047
      @codykaufman8047 9 років тому +7

      +carultch I think the idea is that rather than using flipping software at all, the 'camera' would be designed to film the right-way-around the first time. Imagine if, every time you ever took a picture, it was upside down. Then, you had to run it through a program to flip it back around. Wouldn't it be much more efficient -especially on an organism fighting to survive!- to design the 'camera' to film the right way the first time around?

    • @carultch
      @carultch 9 років тому

      Cody Kaufman It certainly would.
      But if it does come down to an issue of needing two lenses vs one lens, and if it is "cheaper" to build using one lens and software to correct it, you would build it to take the image upside down, and then flip it with "software" to make the image seen appear to be the right side up.

    • @carultch
      @carultch 9 років тому +1

      Cody Kaufman Did you know that the famous "Blue Marble" photo of our planet was taken "upside down"?

    • @rogerfvb
      @rogerfvb 8 років тому +8

      +carultch It seems odd that an omnipotent creator that can bring the universe to existence should depend on what is "cheaper" when designing an organism.
