I'm new to the hobby (Oct 2020), and would love to get some vintage cards, and probably complete a base set, but prices are outrageous in the UK, nothing like the US market. So modern is really my only option. Alt Arts are my aim.
The reason I like vintage is not only because it’s nostalgic for me but it’s the opposite of what you said it feels like a endless chase and I love that there are a lot of vintage cards that I just will never have because of the price and I like that keeps vintage super interesting because I’m always looking for those deals one Hundreds of chase cards
I reason I like vintage is because I know the space well. I just started recently getting into the hobby again, I know almost nothing about the newer cards so I don't touch that stuff, maybe I will later on.
Just buy what you want. Keeping cardboard in good condition as a main component of a long-term investment strategy is almost as crazy as investing in cars. Buy what you like because it's cool.
I love modern sets. Yes, I grew up with earlier generations (1-4), but modern sets are fun to collect, readily available, and cheap. I think there is room for both vintage and modern in the hobby, but I definitely believe modern will age well
That 25th anniversary Charizard is beautiful! The holo pattern is unique & the whole card is texturized. Base set will always be worth more but the new one looks 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm mostly collecting modern alt art cards. They look great on display! 😊 (I also don't like the yellow border so if I want a vintage card I always buy the Japanese version)
I agree 100%, I find the yellow border on regular cards to be terrible looking. I wish they would change it to the Japanese style, it emphasizes the art and card so much better.
This was a high level, big picture video. This is why you are the best Pokemon UA-camr out there Jake. Very honest, and some very interesting knowledge and insights to help us new collectors lol
I collect: 1.) What I like, 2.) What I can afford. 😁 Pretty much the only time I'll buy based on price is if I think I won't be able to afford it in the future, though that's not always going to work out as prices shift up and down lol. Hope life's treating ya well, Jake!
I'm mostly interested in collecting the new silver border modern cards starting with scarlet and violet! All of my older cards get sorted into pokedex number, newest sets I keep as a set That way I can keep empty binder spaces for the sets i intend to complete, but the older stuff I wont feel that same pressure to collect whole sets
Very well described Jake, how there are really 2 markets slowly emerging from Pokémon cards, vintage & modern. It kind of makes me think of PTCG, with standard and expanded or legacy😄. As for me, a year ago, my collection was 95% vintage. Now, 10% vintage, 90% modern. I don't plan on selling either for the moment, specially the vintage Base set & etc., probably never will.

Thank you for this video Jake! This will help new and old people in the hobby so much! You channel is the most unique in my opinion because you sort of stick your neck out with statements/predictions others wouldn’t. You are a gentleman and a scholar!
Collecting both and while I thought I would always like vintage more, the XY era has really been a fun era for me to collect and I've been focusing on that for a while. I love the full art pokemon cards from that era the most!
Great video. As a vintage sports card and memorabilia collector, I recently got into Pokemon because my son is into it. I figured we could do something together. Considering I understand the importance of rookie years in collecting, we are collecting/completing the 1999 base holo set in PSA 10 condition. On top of that, the high grade PSA 10 stuff has a low pop when you consider the amount of cards graded (for instance the Charizard sits at 1.4% that are graded a PSA 10). Of course if I collect something I want to make sure there's a high probability it will be worth more than I paid for it in the future. With that said, it's simple supply and demand on the vintage stuff and understanding the population reports for rarity. After all, they are not making anymore 1999 base unlimited cards.
Collectors also have to consider that how many collected items will stay pristine. Even though some may be mass produced, not everyone will keep their copy pristine.
I've become a mostly vintage collector over the past few months. The pull rates in modern sets are just so bad its really not fun. Why spend $40 on an etb to maybe get a $2 v card and some worthless bulk when you could get a nice wotc holo with that same money.
Open new stuff for the fun of the gamble but acquire the major pieces by purchasing well investing singles. Ask for photos. Grab low auctions. Go wild but keep a max price in mind.
As everyone else has said bro buy singles. I spent 40 bucks the past two days but instead of getting a bunch of shit cards I got 8 ultra rares that I absolutely love. I'm going for a modern charizard collection.
To me it's really about availability the modern cards are sold everywhere and readily available and not to mention horrible pull rates as for the Vintage Pokemon Cards mainly only available either online or sometimes locally through local game stores And to me it's the same for grading PSA 10 modern cards have a lot different market and will most likely go down as time progresses and more cards are graded then compared to what PSA 10 vintage card market is

i agree with you on celebrations charizard. not only are they every where but the holofoil is the worst of all the base set zard reprints we haves seen and the big yellow pika head distracts from the card. right now evolutions zards are going for as much or cheaper than the celebration zard so if your looking to get a base set zard without spending base set money pick that one up instead. its older cheaper and looks better. that said however the gold metal zard is going to be ridiculous in 5 years time.
I started out collecting mainly base set unlimited because that was my childhood nostalgia calling. But since then I've slowly moved over to collecting modern because of how eye-popping the alt artworks are and the FA trainers. I feel confident in sets like Evolving Skies going up in the future because of how much love they're getting now, and also how attractive the eevees will remain over a long period of time. Boosters boxes of modern are also the lowest they've been in a while now (
Great video! I primarily collect vintage Japanese. When it comes to modern, I focus on Japanese exlusives (set cards or promos) and some fan favorites that are available in both Japanese and English. It's what I love to collect and also what I think will hold or maybe gain value over time. I'm not in it to try and make money down the line but it is nice feeling like your collection will at the very least hold its value. Of course I can't know for sure but I feel pretty confident about it. I always try to look for cards that come with a "story". I think if there is some sort of story to tell about a card or set, it has potential. A story could be anything really. Anniversary sets, the first version of a card, the last WotC set, the first non-WotC set, banned cards, Japanese exclusive promos etc., the list of "story potential" goes on. My goal with this is to fill a few binders where every page is interesting, odd, and/or unique. For example, I have a few pages filled with vintage Japanese banned cards. Nothing really rare here but a lot of "story". I do agree with Jake that the 25th anniversary Charizard will probably not go up in value for a very long time. Still though, there is a story attached to this card and it is certainly worthy of having one in your collection. A complete 25th anniversary set, which is quite affordable now, will still be easy to sell for a decent amount of money in ten, fifteen, or twenty years. It's probably not going to land you a big profit but it will certainly raise some eyebrows and attract buyers if you ever do sell.
Adults, when they can count on a good salary, tend to collect the "toys" that were too expensive in their childhood. So, modern rare cards and sealed boxes will be very sought after in 15-20 years
I mainly just chase pikachu. Other than that, I just collect whatever is affordable and available and crack packs when we can. I keep a few sealed products, but otherwise I don't really think of the investment side of collecting as much as I just want stuff I like in the collection. Who knows what things will be worth in 20 years? Patience is key. Today's modern is tomorrow's vintage. That's the hope, anyways, that when I pass these on to my kids, they'll be worth allot more.
I collect all modern, I started with 1ed edition base set and around about TR sold everything for pennies on the dollar. Got back into it in the last 1.5 years. Been collecting sealed Japanese, Japanese promos, sealed modern English and currently working on the Eevolution set in Evovling Skies which I am now 2/3 complete.
I think if you have some discretionary income, invest in vintage since it's going to continue to keep its value over time. If you're on a budget, modern is a solid investment too. Either way, just collect what you enjoy most and you can't lose!
I collect cheap beautiful cards. It's what I can afford and it makes me happy. It wouldn't make sense to cry over that super rare charizard card I'll never be able to get.
Jake, thanks for the video again. May I ask what is your opinion in Alt Art? At what price point would you say is a good investment? Specifically, PSA 9 evolving skies Umbreon V
I would say go for a 10 if you can. It's a lot more valuable long term as an investment since a 9 is worth close to that of an ungraded card you may as well buy ungraded
Great info Jake as always! I collect both but prefer vintage. Secondly early congrats hitting 100K Subs! Been here under 10K and glad channel is growing. Keep it up and cheers to the next UA-cam milestone!
Thank you for your perspective on this! I just got back into Pokémon and have had to start my collection from scratch. I’m currently working on some master sets of early WOTC and wasn’t sure how to collect modern cards due to how many are in a set and how many sets come out a year. I will now just purchased stuff I like and not worry about investment or the money side. Thanks 🙏🏻
I'm not that wealthy and I like opening packs, so modern it is! Even collecting sealed I think it's worth it to collect modern, if you're pretty good at sitting on stuff for years without moving it. I've only got two holo vintage cards left-- I might send them for grading-- and if I ever found my missing childhood binder of cards, I might start expanding it.
You always have wise words Sensei! I just started collecting recently watching your videos. Your channel has gained so much success! (subs) congratulations! Im looking to buy a vintagae blastoise, squirtle, wartortle atm.
I think you said it best Jake, as time goes on the CGI cards will be lackluster, so for me it’s either vintage (neos and earlier) and modern alt arts. Love these convos though! Bless up! 🙏🏼💜
I follow what my nephews enjoy collecting. I figured, they will hit a point in life where they will be nostalgic for 'old' Pokemon cards. So, I collect both ;)
honestly collecting modern is more fun to me with all the secret rares, alt arts, amazing rares etc. The Vmax Eeveelution boxes are excellent! Im having a blast collecting modern and my wallet isnt shattered from 1 purchase
Hi there. I love vintage cards and so far I managed to complete Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and Rocket but I have to admit that full art trainers and alt art are absolutely stunning!
how do you feel about english exclusive promos for example special delivery Bidoof. at the moment they are goin 200ish. what do you predict it will be in 5-10 years from now
I think having a bit of both is the way to go , be a smart buyer and do some research and keep hunting, it's pokemon after all gotta catch em all..cheers Jake good stuff..
I got back into Pokemon because i regret not keeping my old Pokemon cards 20 years ago. Started again a week ago, a lot has changed had to learn it all over again but man does it feel good and these new modern cards look amazing!
There's a saying in the financial investment community - "It's not about timing the market; it's about time in the market." That's why my vote will (generally) go to vintage, because although you can print fewer cards than vintage and make something more rare, vintage will always have the advantage when it comes to age.
Collectibles are not directly comparable to investments. If you’re looking for financial gains, your money is most likely best spent in the stock market rather than on cardboard. You can hold a card for 25 years and it might still barely go up in value
@@jessesanberg Cards could slightly raise in value in time and at very least hold their value but stocks can bottom out on someone, no guarantees stocks are like bets
I think it is a balance. Vintage cards are getting higher costs so our money doesn't go as far anymore. Which slows down the process. Of course there are cards that you pick up if you see them in the wild, no matter the cost or condition. But this new modern is fun. The alt arts are crazy and I love it.
I collect modern cards and I pick up singles of the cards that I like. I like ones that catch my eye with amazing artwork which is many LOL. Of course I would like the price of the cards I pick up to go up but if not that is fine also as I picked the cards I like having in the collection.
I've been just collecting by bidding for psa cards on ebay and vintage stuff is cooler to collect especially when I can't really afford the packs to open them myself and i can't really afford paying for grading right now
I bought the XY 20th anniversary festa Pikachu for $50 because I liked the art. Happy to still have it. Glad to hear you collect for art and thats why i collect
My son and I are collecting modern together because the artwork is awesome. But I’ve been trying to collect vintage Tyranitar cards because Tyranitar is my favorite Pokémon.
I find myself being attracted to both oddly enough. I enjoy the new alternate arts, I think they can look full of life, depending on the card of course. Vintage cards, however, will always hold a special place in my heart. My friends will whip out their vintage pages in their binders and I’ll stare in awe for minutes. Sorry this question isn’t related to the video, but I was wondering what that frame/holder is on your wall? The one that’s holding your classic celebrations set.
Hi there still don’t understand what makes a particular set or a particular Pokémon card rise in price ? Would you mind explaining that ? Also for a new collector like me when people open packs and they get the card that they want / collect which they put it into a sleeve and binder . What do they do with the rest of the cards ? Do they just throw them away ?
So question... What do you guys consider vintage? I know WotC cards for sure but how about Diamond/Pearl generation? they released around 2008 which is about 14 years now.
Delta species is what I like to collect. Having a Pokémon that fire Tyranitar or an electric Gyarados is very interesting. Plus the reverse holos are amazing.
Would love to buy a vintage booster box one day but atm I’m happy collecting modern. The alt art cards that have been coming out recently are just gorgeous and so fun to find and collect!
Great video! Thank you! I have a bit of both. My top cards are the big three (base set, and my blastoise is shadowless), cosmic eclipse pikachu secret rare PSA 10, and the newest addition is Lost Thunder Suicune Secret Rainbow PSA 8 (I collect what I like, the artwork on the new cards is amazing)
I collect vintage anything from my childhood. Pokemon and Yugioh and I buy them from my local card shop. I don't touch anything modern and I honestly if I do I just quickly sell it online. But that's me there is more money in Vintage than modern.
Modern can sometimes be frustrating. It’s fun opening packs but if I get unlucky with a set, that money put into etbs and packs could’ve gone to buying my favorite vintage singles. Of course once I finish my vintage wishlist (gold stars are outta my $ range) I’m really hoping some of these 50-100$+ modern singles crash a bit.
Good video and interesting perspectives. Modern is indeed the wild west and evolving fast. I guess if you assume that the overall collector population will basically remain static over the next 10 years, then yeah sure, the Celeb Char will hold a steady price, but I don't think that will be the case. I suppose time will tell.
the thing i always tell people is todays cards are tomorrows nostalgia. the reason vintage cards are so expensive is because people are willing to pay so much for them due to their nostalgia and people are refusing to sell them for low prices because of their sentimental value. todays children will have the same nostalgic feeling towards todays sets because unlike any other time in modern Pokémon we just had another Pokémon boom like we had in the 90s. for the first time in a long time im starting to see kids back in the card isle looking for Pokémon and we are seeing parents with kids getting back into this hobby and bringing their kids along for the ride which will increase the nostalgic value since now the cards will have ties to memories with the children's parents.
@@JohnDoe_88 i mean i got out of collecting back at the start of x and y and got back into it now so for me i look at cards that are now considered vintage and looked at as nostalgic despite them being the closest the to modern cards for me other than modern cards. in Pokémon vintage really just means 10 years old so in 10 years modern cards will be considered vintage.
I collect both! I try to get a booster box or an ETB, open that up and admire my hits. Then, I’ll keep an eye out for a base set that I don’t have yet!
I love the art work of all the new cards, and the alternate arts are just even better Don’t care if they go up in value or not they just look so good :D
I started with Jungle 1st edition back then, till Team Rocket. Picked up again during pandemic 2020. Still fun but without that 1st edition logo, not as fun like before.
No sealed modern set will be as expensive as the original WOTC sets, simply because those sets are what started pokemon. However, if you collect sealed product then its value will always go up, you will never lose money on it even if there’s a dip in the market as value comes with age. You may pay £100 for something now and in 5 years it may be worth £170, not much of an increase but still an increase in value.
Personally I am going to go all modern for now. I don't have a huge budget plus I would prefer my collection to be pristine, and it's impossible to afford vintage in excellent condition. Only special promos and secret rares for me - modern master sets other than special sets like celebrations is too ridiculously big. Besides, I really like modern. I think Pokemon has done a good job since the tag team era to make good cards, and I would enjoy owning these cards for years to come. I do think the celebrations Charizard will go up in value. It looks better than XY evolutions Charizard, and it's very close to the original. It might not be much for a long time, but I think saying it won't move for 10-20 years is just too big of a gambit. There is never enough good Charizards. Only question is when to start buying, since I still think it's a little high.
This has been a big debate for me lately but I've opted for a bit of both.. I don't want to neglect vintage entirely so I'm going through and getting my favorites, as I continue getting lots of my current all time favorite modern alt arts and full arts.
Well… 9 months later.. your prediction was wrong. That charizard (25th anniversary) is now selling in an auction on eBay for PSA 10 at $420 (30 bids and two days remaining). These things sell for loads graded. Especially in mint gem condition
Of course ,all new set. Since last years product i collected all and looks much much better then old set the old set will remains as og and from new set soon or later they will announce
I collect both. I love holiday sets so I have a decent collection there. I also love the first 6 WOTC sets so I’m building them. I also love alt arts so I’m snagging them. I’m also building a charizard collection!
You should be collecting exactly what you want! But there is no discussion that the modern alternative art cards are something special.

Been collecting sealed Japanese, Japanese promos, sealed modern English and currently working on the Eevolution set in Evovling Skies which I am now 2/3 complete.
Old: E series, shiny Pokemon, star, base set
New: character art, alt art, gold
I think if you have some discretionary income, invest in vintage since it's going to continue to keep its value over time. If you're on a budget, modern is a solid investment too. Either way, just collect what you enjoy most and you can't lose!
Love modern and vintage and you’re so close to 100k!!
Almost at 100k That's awesome Congratulations Man. I want to see your Play Button in the background when you get it.
Hi there. I love vintage cards and so far I managed to complete Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and Rocket but I have to admit that full art trainers and alt art are absolutely stunning!
how do you feel about english exclusive promos for example special delivery Bidoof. at the moment they are goin 200ish. what do you predict it will be in 5-10 years from now
Special Delivery bidoof looks to be surprisingly rare. It's a neat conversation piece so it definitely has a lot potential
I think having a bit of both is the way to go , be a smart buyer and do some research and keep hunting, it's pokemon after all gotta catch em all..cheers Jake good stuff..
I think you nailed it with this theory, Jake. Not everything Pokémon TCG has to be vintage, there is a growing market for modern cards as well.
vintage is king, im one of the only people in the world to grade a psa 10 first edition lugia from neo genesis
I got back into Pokemon because i regret not keeping my old Pokemon cards 20 years ago. Started again a week ago, a lot has changed had to learn it all over again but man does it feel good and these new modern cards look amazing!
Modern all day! The art works of modern cards is unreal.
There's a saying in the financial investment community - "It's not about timing the market; it's about time in the market."
That's why my vote will (generally) go to vintage, because although you can print fewer cards than vintage and make something more rare, vintage will always have the advantage when it comes to age.
Thanks for welcoming me to the hobby.
I've been just collecting by bidding for psa cards on ebay and vintage stuff is cooler to collect especially when I can't really afford the packs to open them myself and i can't really afford paying for grading right now
I also think artwork is my big indicator if I love the artwork then I will love collecting the card
Remember today's modern is tomorrow's vintage.😉✌
Yes cards of today clearly won't always be called "modern"
Collect what you love, that should be the way.
for me, I'm looking for the arts... so I don't care how old it is if I like the art work... my favoruite card is a common scyther for example 😇😇
That’s because Scyther is the best Pokémon 😅
@@Lakersfan007 EXACTLY!!!
Right like when it comes to cars a 25 year old car is considered a classic car. So after a couple decades one would consider a card set vintage
Vintage. Base set unlimited Pokémon. Original base set.
Modern. shieney fate. hidden fate
Charzard. Trainers Japanese promo
I like vintage for individual cards as I love the nostalgia it brings, but collect modern for my sealed collection as it is way more affordable.
Right Jake would say vintage cards have the nostalgia but Jakes son will be saying today's cards give him the nostalgia..
I love the art work of all the new cards, and the alternate arts are just even better
Don’t care if they go up in value or not they just look so good :D
I started with Jungle 1st edition back then, till Team Rocket. Picked up again during pandemic 2020. Still fun but without that 1st edition logo, not as fun like before.
I collect modern and vintage. It's fun to open moderns in search of rare cards, but to collect specific vintage cards that I just plain like.
What's the frame back there that you have your celebrations master set in?. I'd like to do something similar
I agree about celebrations. The pikachu head ruins it for most. It’s nice to have but yeah
Been able to grab several PSA 9 graded holos from the XY Evolutions set for around $15 each including shipping. Been stacking those deep!
This has been a big debate for me lately but I've opted for a bit of both.. I don't want to neglect vintage entirely so I'm going through and getting my favorites, as I continue getting lots of my current all time favorite modern alt arts and full arts.
jake trying to value charizard 10 years in the future. never underestimate charizard they say
hey jake i found darkness ablaze etb for $60 should i go for it especially since it’s selling for $130 or would it be reprinted and drop in prices?
Why not both?
Well… 9 months later.. your prediction was wrong. That charizard (25th anniversary) is now selling in an auction on eBay for PSA 10 at $420 (30 bids and two days remaining). These things sell for loads graded. Especially in mint gem condition
Also its so funny those full art trainers are so popular and like a year maybe two years ago you were recommending people to invest in them!
Of course ,all new set. Since last years product i collected all and looks much much better then old set the old set will remains as og and from new set soon or later they will announce
Where did you grade your pokemon games in the backround?
I'm collecting both but focusing on the vintage side. Always finding new its to add like I just got a great deal on the vintage structure decks
I collect both. I love holiday sets so I have a decent collection there. I also love the first 6 WOTC sets so I’m building them. I also love alt arts so I’m snagging them. I’m also building a charizard collection!
great video Jake I strongly agree with you
