3:47 Little shortcut: Instead of Deleting the Edge > Multi-cut > Making a new one, you can just collapse the mini-edge that forms the Ngon. Of course it's better the way he did it in order to explain what's going on, but now that you know, use collapse in situations like this one: Select Edge > Shift-RightClick > Collapse Edge.
I'd like to contribute to the video with a few tips to using the Multi-cut tool, since the video missed these: 1. you can execute the Multi-cut by right clicking. This is much more convenient than pressing enter 2. you can insert edge loops with the Multi-cut tool by holding down ctrl. You can also place that edgeloop right in the middle by clicking with the middle mouse button. 3. you can place a vertex in the middle of an edge by holding shift. 4. instead of trying to select a vertex directly, it can be faster to click-and-hold on an edge while sliding your cursor until you hit the vertex.
Thannk you! I knew that having Ngons in my models was bad but your explanation really helped me to understand why and also how to fix it. Very informative while still being concise
amazing tutorial, thank you so much. The thing with many other tutorials is that they fail to talk about the theory or explaination as to why things are the way they are. I'm a professional matte painter, transitioning to more asset level work. I've had some exposure to 3d for years but was never told why edge loops will not go through like youve mentioned
As soon as the video started I was like "You gotta chill with them Ngons." Great video for beginners though. I know I had this issue when I first started learning.
By merging the vertices towards center you could save a lot of time. You got 3 vertices that form a triangle and 5sided faces around? merge them to one. Edit Mesh> Merge to center Adjust the vertex. Done.
I also find having double geometry giving the illusion of not having extra faces or vertexs. Typically after an extrude for example that has no values inputted but committed. A good old merge vertex can often solve the issue.
Now I know why the Edge Loop must work on my models even though I don't need more edge loops. But in complex mashes like faces, body parts etc sometimes, we cannot get rid of the triangles. How to maintain Edge Loop there?
I say place the triangles strategically. If you know it breaks the edge loops, use the triangles as a way to break down sections of the human body depending on how much geometry is required. For ex, the rib cage area would require more geometry that say the stomach beneath it since the rib cage has a lot more bumps and crevices you have to model in.
thank you very much Mr H! This is a wonderful exercise in a well explained video! P.S. Using the exercise file, I also tried the built in Maya tool to find non-quads (Mesh -> Clean up -> Select Matching Polygons, Faces with more than 4 sides) and it helped me as well. The maya tool is a bit buggy though because it intermittently matches quads prompting me to restart Maya.
Good tutorial bro, greetings from Perú, I have a question, how can I move the line of the loop once created in the object? Using the insert edge loop tool I have created lines in an object but I want to move them to modify their position, how can I do it?
This video proved a concept very well, but Id like a version with a more intricate problem, where multiple changes on an organic thing must be done, because the problem I had when coming here, was on a much more complicated model, and these things doesn't take into account a lot of other problems that usually occurs
So what do you do when this magic tool that everyone tells you to use is always greyed out and unusable? No matter what. Even on a new scene with a completely unaltered shape, "multi-cut tool" is greyed out and unclickable. Any thoughts?
Hey quick question, are 5 edge poles bad ?? This is a vertex made up of 5 edges. My mate says they are good but some videos and online forums say it's not great
+howl13 Yes! If you wanted to you could merge the vertices. That makes the flow of the edges a little off but it does still work to get back to all quads.

Thank you so much. I was about to stop learning due to frustration of this issue and I never found a solution to it until now! Thanks so much!
You're welcome!
look Arrimus tutors.
still helped me 2021. you're the goat thank you
Thank you so much - and to add an exercise file is very kind of you. This is the actual day-to-day stuff that will get you into heaven.

Excellent tutorial, simple clear to the point, even after 20 years I can learn something new (shortcuts)
Dude, you fixed my problem with 68 seconds. You are the best!

thank you so much, this was very helpful and I finally understoond how edge loops work!
Thank You sir!....learned something that I'm gonna keep in mind whenever I do modelling from now on....

Your tutorial is very clear and simple to follow! Thank you !!
Yo this video solved half of my problems in modeling
thank you for making this simple nobody told me about this information before 🤍
You earned my like and sub.
I am new to Maya (Using Maya 2017)
And trying to reate cool stuff.
Used zbrush a lot but have to learn also Maya.

thank you so much. I want to cry that my friend still makes this problem and he doesn't fix it.
wow your better than my collage professor thank you
Thanks for watching!
Thank you. It's Valuable for Beginner.

Thats sounds cool! Too bad it forces you to restart!
Thank you. I had a vertex that was making a face 5 sided, even though edge select made it appear as if it one was continuous edge.
You are Great. Very helpful. Thanks

fantastics.......nice tutorials with nice explain

This was so great, thank you! ☺️
Hi can u teach me how to loop on triangle surface?I cant get it since i have no ngon and vertex problem.Do u kniw how to fix it?
thank you so much! you help a lot!
That was soo helpful man, thank you
You're welcome!
Hello I have a question, everytime I put edge loop it wont activate some lines on the object. what can I do?
Exactly what I was looking for
thank you Mr H , your tutorial is very helpful me and very nice
Thanks so much!
Killer tuut!! I owe you one.
Thanks!
im sure my faces have 4 sides, but I still can not insert edge loops
Very useful. Thanks man!!
Hi, very helpful tutorial :D !
but how did you add the Edgeloop tool to the Polygons menu (next to the grab UV tool) ?
In Maya 2016 you click on the menu item while holding down the control and shift key at the same time.
Thanks for the fast answer, worked fine :)
Thankyou, you helped alot!
I think you save my project 😂
thank you so mutch .it's perfect
Love you brother ❤️
cant u just weld the vertices together? im just wondering :D
+howl13 Yes! If you wanted to you could merge the vertices. That makes the flow of the edges a little off but it does still work to get back to all quads.
cool !!, i was wondering if you could cover a tutorial on how to retopo a cylinder so u can sculpt it mudbox or zbrush, please :)
LOVE THIS!
awesome, thank you!
i didnt understeand wtf is face. but when you say it's side , i got it. it must be rectangle got it . it cant be 5gon/pentagon. ty
a face / quad has 4 vertices, a tri has 3 vertices, and anything more than 4 is a ngon.
ty. im non native sory.
blackholeearth0 _
no problem man, glad to help
Thank you.
this bugs are very simple modelling fix ... basicly nothing difficult as you have regular shapes. and topology is obvious.
Well shit now iv been deleting edges by only pressing delete
Ctrl+Delete
thx love
