I have never seen anyone discuss accessibility in curly hair routines. Anyone with an injury, joint issues, arthritis, back problems, etc. can run into trouble adapting a lot of the more commonly recommended methods. It can really take a lot of effort! Thanks for discussing how this has impacted you.

Aw, sweetie. Please understand that this was an accident, which simply means that you are human, because none of us are perfect. So learn, and grow, and change if needed. It’s okay to be human. Painful, yes. Both literally and emotionally. I appreciate you being hair for us, even though it obviously wasn’t easy. Take care, Mel (and Amanda too!)

More one-handed styling content! I’m an amputee from birth and it would be good to see how you get on and tricks you’ve find as you try new stuff. Especially finger coiling! And scrunching.

This video actually made me cry a little 😭 i have chronic health issues that can cause me so much pain my hand becomes unusable, and this made me feel very seen!! A lot of products are inaccessible to me because i can't open/use them one handed, so im going to go out and pick some of these up 🖤🖤🖤

Accessibility curly hair video please. My 10 yo daughter was born without fi gers on her left hand. Her hair texture is almost just like yours except longer with some long layers. She wants to do her own hair but it's hard for her learn and I don't know how to teach that part. Right now she has single braids and she loves it since its low maintenance and she can actually put ALL her hair in a scrunthie without it getting tangled. I would love this... im also going to show her this video after school

I think it might be really interesting to talk to disabled people (e.g. Jessica Kellgren-Fozard) about their hair care and styling. It might give disabled viewers some ideas for what we can do. :)

Dude I've had not 1, not 2, but THREE wrist surgeries, each being a year journey of recovery.... I am wickedly excited to learn from a hair pro because it FREAKIN' SUCKS ASS to be one handed. My 4th surgery is in Dec because the first two FAILED. Lucky me! I wear hooked bras, and keep them hooked, walking into them Bigger boobs than hips so it works with my body shape.) Look up amputee hand videos where you'll get clever ideas for how to put your hair in a pony tail, put on clasped things, etc. Mostly, it JUST SUCKS ASS and you learn to chase people around to help with minimal daily life. lol

Been there a bit myself years ago. Had a stroke, predominantly affected my right hand. This was in early 90s. Couldn't do my hair, couldn't have a friend come over every few days to help me so I ended up getting a pixie cut to get by. The next day mom had come to help & was helping me with my hair...and she gently told me not to cut my hair that short again :D

I broke the wrist of my dominant hand a few months ago and haircare was so frustrating that I was tempted to cut all my hair off! I mostly didn't style my hair while I was on medical leave, but detangling was definitely the WORST. For any products that don't have a pump, I recommend squeezing them onto your leg or other body part and scooping it up with your free hand. Best wishes for your healing!!

You know what I would LOVE to see?… a video using a hooded blowdryer! My curly friend and I were actually talking about this recently! The most popular ones on Amazon are only about $50. I would love to see live footage using it and the results as this tool is pretty cheap compared to higher end tools. Oh - and pretty please get better soon. I broke my tailbone about a year ago and it SUCKED. Take those arnica supplements you can buy at a natural food store - they actually work! ♥️♥️♥️

Hi Mel. First off, so sorry for your experience. I think you are taking it very well and am so happy to see how positive you are. I also wanted to let you know that this video means a lot to me. As a special educator, I know for a fact that people with disabilities often don't see themselves in media. Their experiences aren't reflected anywhere. The fact that you are sharing this part of your life with us will mean a lot to those who suffer with permanent disabilities. The can be 'seen' better now because of people like you. So keep u the great work!

A bruised tailbone can take a LOT longer, I'm afraid. If it's too uncomfortable to sit; get a doughnut cushion so you can sit down without putting pressure on the tailbone itself. Also, anti-inflammatories are the best and will also help the arm. Hope you're not too uncomfortable.
You did a great job doing all that one handed!!

I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I have chronic health issues and sometimes the hardest part is not being able to physically do the things you used to - especially if they are things that make you feel better and that you love (for me it's my hair and working out with my friends). Sometimes the toughest thing to do is giving yourself permission to let a task go and not hold yourself to your usual standard. Be kind to yourself

I had a dislocated shoulder. I was away from my family studying in Montreal. So, no help. It's so awesome that you have your family to help with your recovery. Get well soon Mel. And you didn't do this to yourself - it was an accident. It's ok. Accidents happen all the time. Take care.

Not fun…..thank God I had a battery powered toothbrush that I could lay on the vanity and brush away ! Lol. Not to mention the toilet situation 💩💩lol ! My friend is a nurse, luckily she came by to hose me down !
I’m a hairdresser too….for 6 weeks, I dressed in scrubs and looked like crap ! I had no one here to help me, so I was miserable 😢.
Get better soon and keep up your jolly attitude ! 👍🏼❤️

Please please PLEASE create content around low-density/fine hair.
We would all LOVE to have your and Amanda's voluminous locks but alas, it is not within our control. Some product/ingredient watch out or "stay away from" for people that struggle with:
    scalp coverage
    curl elongation (unintended)
Styles / cuts ideas for low density
So much in that area that your wisdom as a stylist could really help!
    Hope you read this xx

I'm a lefty and I've managed to injure it 3 times so far in my 34 years of life. The first time I was 11 and fell off my bike, got a concussion and broke the knuckle of my index finger. I had to wear a splint for 4 weeks and since then the knuckle is positioned about 1.5-2 cm lower than it used to be.
The second time I was 18 and managed to sever my thumb tendon, leading to minor surgery, 2 weeks in a cast and 4 weeks of physical therapy.
The third time I was 20 and got my fingers squeezed in a forklift. I thought I'd just broken something so I was not all that concerned once I got to the ER and the lovely hospital workers gave me something to ease the pain and calm me down. It wasn't until post op that I was told I'd very likely loose my index finger and probably also my middle finger. After 5 more surgeries and 3 weeks in the hospital I ended up with a partial amputation of my index finger and an ugly middle finger which required a skin graft and months of physical therapy. During the 4 months it took me before I was able to use my left hand again, I didn't develop ANY right handed skills. On a positive note, my handwrighting with the left actually got better than it was before the injury!

Love this routine. Last wedding I went to my brother flipped me on the dance floor and my face slammed into his shoulder breaking my nose. It was so good to see everyone out cutting loose as we haven't seen that since before the pandemic. But coming away with that broken nose and me and a bunch of guests developing covid after put a damper on the memory of the festivities. Stay safe but don't limit your dancing or your content creation. Thanks for your help.

I can now write with both hands! But most importantly, your Verb Foam Gel is AMAZING ! It’s great on wash day as well as to refresh your hair. And the natural scent? Incredible. So many products have such a synthetic scent that is so off putting. Yours is so refreshing. Thank you so much.

I love the idea of talking about accessible curly haircare. I have a chronic autoimmune disorder that can cause one or both of my hands to become unusable as anything other than a blunt object for weeks at a time. Is it just me or do some companies make their pumps or spray nozzles just too stiff? I have lovely products that I can't even get out of the bottle sometimes. I have developed strategies to help get the best out of my hair without a lot of fine motor skills, but it was trial and error because I was too embarrassed to research or talk about it. Now my condition is improving due to medication and it's nice to not have to think about it. All this is to say I can relate to the struggle and thank you for sharing.

Oh my gosh! I had surgery a couple weeks ago on my hand because of bone on bone arthritis and I’ve been struggling with being able to wash and style my hair! I watch all your videos and I couldn’t believe it when this video showed up..it really sucks having one hand to do everything. Guess I was kinda lucky because it’s not my dominant hand but it’s funny how we take even the littlest things for granted like opening a water bottle or squeezing the shampoo..I will probably have to have the other hand done when this one is back to somewhat normal and I’m not looking forward to not having my dominant hand but you gave me hope that..what the hell! I can do this! Thank you for this video and looking forward to the next few with your “just one hand “videos! Take care and heal fast!

When I was in a shoulder sling and couldn’t move my arm at all for 6 weeks, I had to think about all of those things ahead of time. Spray products were absolutely my best friend. Thankfully, Alterna had a bamboo series for curly hair. The styling spray was great. I’d still be using it but my hair is so thick, I was going through a bottle every two weeks. 😩

A few years ago, I broke my right arm, and it was in a sling for 6 weeks. I had to style my short curly hair left-handed. I relied heavily on dry shampoo between washes. I also did a much lighter styling routine. Spray detanglers were a must! My fave is the Cantu shea butter one.

I'd like to see a comparison review of the Curlsmith hair dryer, the Shark hair dryer and the Dyson hair dryer for curly hair. I hope you heal quickly!

Thank you for sharing this video! My mom doesn't have use of one of her hands and really struggles with hair tools because she can't use a lot of things that are commonly used. For example, she likes the look her stylist gives her with a hair dryer and large round brush, so she uses one of those round hair drying brush things. I'd love to see a video reviewing "accessible" devices that you discover through this time. She tried a hair dryer stand but couldn't get the hang of it and was really sad!

Oh no! Hope you heal quickly. Another fragrance free, curly hair routine. I know you’ve done some products. Would love help with more options. I have a lot of allergies, and have pretty much had to give up a lot of the ‘normal’ curly hair products.

I broke my right hand and had nerve damage. Was cast and immobilized up past my elbow for 3 months about 10 years ago. Gave up on my curly hair. My sister or mom would just put it in a bun. I still use my left hand for almost everything...

Girl, I'm feeling you! My elbow is broken. Luckily, I can take my cast off when I want to. It's just a partial cast with bandage keeping it on. Plus, I'm left handed. It's my right that's broken. So, you have it even worse. I will keep you in my prayers.

I’m so sorry to hear about your arm and don’t feel bad about how it happened, we’ve all been there in some way or another. Thanks for doing this video and mentioning all these great one handed products. I have rheumatoid arthritis and some days my fingers can’t bend and I can’t put any pressure on them. Pump bottles help as I can push on them using my palms, or heel of my hand. And the tangle teaser scalp massager has saved so many wash days for me, I can actually get me scalp properly cleaned now! Thank you and speedy recovery 🤗

Be a good patient and take your time recovering. We understand if you have to step away for a little while. I don't know if it's as applicable for casts. But after hip surgery, the nurse advised me to use Glad press and seal to cover the wound when showering and it really does keep everything dry.

If you haven't already, get a cheap long knitting needle to help the itch! I broke my thumb in middle school and basically carried a single knitting needle everywhere. You can slide it under the cast and get some of those itches!
