- Apple has heavily promoted their trade-in program in recent years, encouraging users to give up their old iPhone in exchange for a discount on a new model. Over a third of Apple Store customers now utilize this program, but it’s left many people wondering why Apple even wants our old iPhones. Which is what I’ll explain in this video.

I love how Apple can say sorry we can’t fix your phone (when it really is something fixable) but will take that same phone and refurbish it for resell.
Because apple heavily relies on planned obsolescence.

It also has the fun side-effect of reducing the number of used models on the market, thus driving up price and thus leading more people to instead buy new from Apple.

@@JonathanRose24 Agreed. I stopped selling on ebay for that reason. Too many people winning the bid or buying it now, but not paying. Then, having to wait weeks to get a resolution. And ebay didn't seem to care.
We might be close to "peak smartphone" as in they're so good that new models every year hardly qualify as upgrades. I think that's precisely why Samsung invests heavily in foldable touch screen phones to introduce a new form factor. New form factors are needed for new sales.

Exactly. Even a cheaper phone nowadays can do what 95% of people want it to. Form factor is what's holding them back, certain tasks are hell on a phone vs a full computer.
foldable is a dead end gimmick
There was nothing exciting after iPhone 4s (introduction of Siri). After that it's just been predictable upgrades like better camera, more memory, and when that wasn't enough they started adding more cameras. Now my phone has 5 cameras 😂😂😂
@@johnames6430 what would you like the phone to do though? Until there's a giant leap in innovation, like super smart AI, or phones that aren't 100% physical. But the process getting there will be incremental and the new chips etc. that they make every year is part of that process.
It also prevents people from having a backup iPhone to use should the new and more expensive one they bought from Apple suddenly get badly damaged or lost and, thus forcing the user to buy another expensive new iPhone instead of being able to revert to their older and already paid for iPhone.
If you have enough for a top of the line iPhone I’d say they should be smart/wealthy enough to have either Apple care or some form of insurance to cover all that 🤷♂️
just buy a cheap android and stick your sim card in it if your main phone breaks. i got my old s7 that still turns on and works fine that I never sold. When I dropped my phone in the water and had to get a replacement, it came in handy. more than one way to skin a cat 👍
decent amount of ppl i know have a spare old model smart phone lying around somewhere tbh. it's hard to go even a few days without a phone in our modern world.
Or just pay 10 bucks a month to get a new one if you break yours

It basically keeps Apple in control of their own markets, take someones old phone out of the market location (say USA or EU), they upgrade and if that phone is exchanged instead of being handed down to a family member or sold 2nd hand then that person would also need buy a new product.
They are also removing used phones from the used phone market in USA/EU and sending those same used phones to India, like he said. That also benefits them because less used phones are circling on the markets that can in fact afford new one.
I just can't believe that people fall for it. It literally takes no effort to sell an iPhone in good condition in the states nor eu. They are highly requested and at a good price. Why purchase new iphone for $300 less with apples deal, when you can purchase it for $550 less, with tiny bit of effort.

And for what reason would an iPhone user want to switch to android? I switched to iPhone 2 years ago and still don’t see any compelling reason to switch back to android and i keep myself up to date with every new release of it.

I clinged to an iPhone with a headphone jack until it couldn’t take it anymore, I would have bought one sooner if they didn’t take away the feature. They also said it was to “claim space” to add more tech, and literally every phone without a headphone jack is now much bigger.

if apple's air pods were their own company they would be roughly valued at 179 billion dollars, that's more than other phone manufacturers. removing headphone jacks was never about tech spacing in the phone.

As their business grows over the years, the amount of material they need to extract also grows. By doing this they do not extract less material, they just don't need to extract even more.
And one of the things they do is change the chargers and charging bricks required for these phones all the time. So instead of reusing old chargers on new phones you have to buy all new stuff every time. And often you need multiple throughout your house and cars so this is a lot of waste as well.
That's a good thing.

It's £350, which is almost half the price you paid for your two year old phone. That's absolutely worth it imo.
iPhones used to actually hold their resale value really well, until they started releasing 3, 4, 5 different models at once, and every carrier selling them at $99 a piece or free with a new agreement
I bought a 32GB 3GS in 2010 for $325 I used it for 2 years and resold it in 2012 for $275 but those days are long gone with Apples commitment to the end users security

The best thing about iPhones is that, despite the price, you can use it for years. So giving it up to upgrade is wasting money.

I never understood the benefits for selling an old iPhone back to Apple.
You get pennies for a still perfectly usable iPhone that you can use as a spare phone in case you need to send you "new" one for repairs.
Or, you just sell it yourself. Takes 10 seconds to take few pics of it and put it on FB market. Used iPhones in good condition practically sell by themselves. And you can maybe even get the double apple is offering you. I don't get why you would lover the price of brand new iphone by 300 that apple offers you, when you can lower it by 600 with tiny bit of effort lol

I traded in my iPad Air 2 for an iPad Air 4. I got $120 for it. The battery on my old iPad wouldn’t even last a full day, and it was slowing down. So It was more convenient to sell it back to apple
i find it more likely that one of the reasons is that it improves their sales by limiting the amount of old iphones on the market : as people won't be able to find as much iphones on the used market, their only choices to get one is to either buy a refurbished one or a brand new one at full price, both of which totally benefit apple.
the same way supermarkets and big chains such as amazon prefer to destroy a large part of their unsold products rather than putting them on sale.
Because Apple hardware is so good, phones can last years longer than the warranty and a three year old iPhone is still a formidable piece of hardware that the younger ones or older ones can use. Removing these from circulation is a clever move to boost sales because fewer second hand phones are in circulation.
It also helps restrict the availability of spare parts, most of which can only be obtained from other donor devices

@@wesleythompson3917 they seem the same but in reality, iPhones turn out to be more expensive then it’s counterparts cause of regional differences and all these promotions that android makers provide.
For example, my galaxy s10 costed me around 1050$ with a free ear bud(msrp 999$) while my iphone 11pro (256gb) costed me like 1400$ even though the msrp for it was like 1100$

The prices they offer for trade in are in many cases quite dramatically, and comically, significantly below market rates.
It’s often a good idea to cross check with stores that buy & sell used phones to see if you’re getting the most you can for your device.
Very true, but maybe a week or two a year it’s equal to or maybe slightly above market price. And I do mean slightly 😂
They're currently offering $220 for iPhone SEs, you can buy them brand new for $180 from Cricket. Got any real examples?
Not a phone but same thing… I looked to see how much they’d take for my MacBook and I was quoted just over a grand when my spec MacBook are currently selling for about £800-£900. So I’d be better off selling back to Apple…
Or just buy a phone that you dont have to replace every 1-2 years. Use it for 4-8 Years.

@@ZacklFair iPhones get updates for like 5-6 years, the 6S is still fine, I won’t be upgrading this 11 until it stops getting updates. And when I do upgrade, I’ll sell this phone on eBay and buy the current or previous to current gen phone, used of course. I’m very interested in the Z Flip 3, so hopefully Apple have entered the market by then 🤷♀️
I tried to trade in my brother's mint condition iphone 11 to apple for the 12 pro max. Apple only wanted $350 for a brand new iphone the year prior, which is unacceptable. I sold it on the used market for $550 (US)

I also think that offering trade-in program prevents some of the users from switching to android devices since the latest iPhone becomes discounted and they could get a cheaper iPhone. This further insures that the users are engaged in the apple services like apple music etc. which makes it harder for the users to ditch the ecosystem. I could be wrong though.
Plus, if you forget to format the memory several times to insure your personal information is completely erased, they can record and sell that information to ANYONE willing to pay for it.
iPhones are encrypted, so unless you have a very bad password I don't think thats anything to worry about (obviously ensure that you format the device, but still)

If you trade in your I-phone for a new one you would need to give them your pass word to make it easy for them the recondition for resell. Besides, Apple knows what encryption is used, since they installed the software, and would easily be able to decrypt the phone.
I think that it would be more environmental friendly to allow users more easily repair their devices than selling them new one with a discount.
But it would be a hell of a lot less profitable and profits will always trump the environment (as well as everything else) in any business calculation. If you want companies to be environmentally sensitive, you need to make it so they can profit off a clean environment by either massively penalizing them for not doing so or massively rewarding them for doing so (or, even better, do both). This will remain true even if we abandon capitalism (or, more accurately, our current mixed-economic system). So if you want users to be able to more easily repair their devices, make it so only authorized apple parts can legally be used to repair devices while simultaneously fining Apple if they even offer repair services themselves. That way, Apple will not care that you are repairing your device because they will have effectively just turned you into an unpaid Apple employee while doing so plus they do not have to worry about replacing the device that you just bricked by botching the job. 🥇
I never give them my old iPhones. I always need a secondary phone, and each time I upgrade, my previous main iPhone becomes the backup one. Now my main phone is the iPhone 8 Plus and my iPhone 6 is still serving me as my secondary phone which had served me for almost 7 years by now.
I'll be doing the same, too! I got my Motorola One Vision bought it for a bargain price, at least in my country I bought it for $150 in November of 2019, and it's been a beast of a phone! Has headphone jack, expandable storage, Great cameras for price, battery life is stellar, and it can even run 99% of my games with ease, even though it has an Exynos Chip. My only complaint are the OS updates. I was supposed to get 2 years of OS updates but only got one.... I don't think I'll ever get Android 11, but I'll still be rocking this phone for another 2 years, and it'll be my backup phone when I get a new one soon.

I’m upgrading to the 13 Pro from the 7 and I would get less than £70 for it and it still works with no cracks on the screen so I’ll definitely be keeping it as a spare. It’s not much of a difference on a £949 phone
Next time try a trade-in promotion from a big carrier.
I didn’t want to have a contract, I just wanted to pay it off so it just really wasn’t worth it and it’s nice having a spare phone if it comes down to it

Let's not forget that this is also the company that will not under any circumstance allow parts to be sold to those who wish to fix their own product. So you can either take your device to an independent repair shop who might have the part you need, you can throw it out, or you can give it to Apple who will then do a sub-par job fixing it and resell it for a nice profit.

I work for an Apple authorized SP and unfortunately we’re the only repair shops who can legally obtain apple genuine parts. The side effect of this is whenever someone comes in with an iPhone repaired third-party, it’s always a crappy Chinese part. The other day I saw an iPhone 11 “repaired” with a 480p screen. I wish I was kidding

The algorithm probably began reccomending Apple vids since I work at a e-waste disposition company and needed to look up a few Mac and 3utools tutorials since I deal with a considerable amount of year old to 4 year old Apple devices as of late when a few big customers retired hundreds of their "old" Apple devices to us... rather than Apple... 🤔 Wonder why.

Environmentalism is a marketing strategy
It’s fine with me so long as they pass on the savings to us…the consumer. I already have more chargers than I could ever use so don’t need one or new cables with a new phone. Personally a good move so long as the price of the removed components are full removed.
99% of people have like 10 chargers at home. Why shouldn‘t it be environment friendly? Dont think that many people need a new charger, therefore not many receive that extra package?
@@georgwagner4438 I've read that the charger that most iPhone users utilize is the traditional 5W charger that uses a USB-A cable instead of the USB-C cable that is found in the box of the iPhone 12 series, if that's true it renders your logic invalid. And I really doubt that only 1% of iPhone buyers buy a charger.
@@edu-kt Why is my statement invalid, most people have enough usb-c adapters at home since its basically the new standard since months or years. If now only 60% have enough usb-c chargers, in a year it will be 75% or whatever and so on.
And producing a charger for every phone creates more CO2 and other bad stuff than only shipping them to the people who need the charger.
Yes, those people who order them get a second package and possibly a second delivery but Im sure its still better for the earth.
(And it will only become better for the earth since more and more people will have drawers full of them chargers in the future)

Have had my iPhone 13 pro for about a week. Amazing device!!!
and now it also serves as a way to keep working parts away from repair shops since they are making it harder and harder to acquire
My repair shop loves me because I order parts online and come in with it just in case they don’t have my parts.
I paid dearly for my iPhone 8 on release and quickly found out it wasn’t much better than the 7 and was quickly overshadowed by the X. Because of this, I told myself I’d hold onto it until it was absolutely necessary to replace. I’ve gone 4 years now with a battery swap at 2.5 and it was sort of reborn when the iPhone SE2 came out. This gave the market more cases for me to feed off of.
I have the 6S which is basically the same as 7 and 8.
Wow that’s pretty amazing that the 12 uses all recycled rare earth metals. That’s amazing for the volume of sales they do.
I’m using an old 5s while watching this video. Instead of setting in my dresser drawer I now use it as an iPod for mostly music or watching UA-cam. It’s only 16gb. I can still put enough of the music I need on It works great. My main phone is a 11 pro max.

With everything going on with the right to repair controversy. Maybe Apple wants to keep and recycle the old phone themselves to keep the used parts out of the hands of consumers and non-authorized repair shops?
No, that is only a plus. They are removing used phones from the markets like US/EU by sending them to India like he said, because those 2 markets like US/EU are people who can afford new ones. If there is less used phones being sold, people will go and buy new one, cause not everyone can get used one in good condition. Once they remove them from our markets, they sell them to poorer countries for much more money than they valued your device at. Its a win, win, win, win for them. It literally takes 0 effort to sell an iPhone in good condition, I don't know why people would opt out of getting 200-300 dollars more and gift it to apple.

I have owned CPO devices and haven't been disappointed once! Will always recommend this to anyone who has a lower budget
I have worked in a repair centre and some of the work we did was manufacturer-spec (certified) refurbishment. All I'm gonna say is I'll never buy or recommend buying a CPO device, like ever. Wouldn't even trust majority of those wankers to even touch my phone let alone repair it. And there alot of my ex co-workers or just people who have worked in this field who would agree with me.

I have had my 8+ for 3 years and it’s 99% perfect, always in a case and screen protector, and I was offered around £100 for it...
That is a downside to buying a depreciating asset. It could be mint condition and in great working shape, but in today's world a 3 year old piece of technology is vastly outdated, which drops the value very quickly.
Just keep it, you never know when you're gonna need a backup. Or if you want more $$$ for it you could always sell it on eBay, those prices can be crazy lol

@@kanagawayarichin even if the battery health is poor, replacing it isn't that hard. Just have to find a trusted/decent brand. All these randomly named or cheap knock off batteries tend to not be very dependable. IFixit, Crazy or Apple branded is probably the way to go. Unfortunately they're pricey but worth it in the long run. I'm gonna actually test out some off the off branded ones and see how they actually last lol.
Absent from the video was the idea that they don’t want to continue to support a large base of relatively obsolete software. This allows them to focus more effort on developing new software, not patching old software to try to pull off new features.

@@Tom_Stevens617 it’s not. They want to cull the old devices and focus their energy and money on new equipment that runs modern software. Allowing old devices to creep around hurts them two ways; not only hardware sales, but money spent on development to maintain old devices’ software. They want developers focused on current features and new software that drives hardware sales. Never forget that without software, hardware like a phone is just a shiny brick.

Android you trash within a year when you can't find updates.
iPhone 7 is still supported by new OS updates! trade it in when it's not supported, you only get $50 then....
@@lucasrem There’s more to it than that. They are getting in front of just the kind of nightmare that exists in the Android world that you mentioned. Hardware and software are strongly related and both drive sales AND the development/maintenance of both are very costly. At a certain point the older hardware gets in the way of software progress or can no longer support a new OS. This is true of not just phones, they want to eliminate as many older devices as possible because they don’t want to service the hardware or maintain software for older machines.
The environment has nothing to do with it, it’s all about keep costs down and profit margins up, but hey saying it “for the environment “ is a good sales pitch 😉
i’d recommend going to apples website, and looking at the initiatives it’s taking to become a carbon neutral company.

Very cool! A rare win win I guess. Yes it may distort resale prices but it does also help the environment & I buy new phones anyway.
I would use that program but unfortunately even for perfectly condition phones the prices they offer are abysmal compared to other companies and especially private selling (but that option in any category usually leads to higher sale yield)
Most people don't have the time to go through the lengthy process of selling their old phones on places like Ebay or Craigslist, whilst also running the risk of being scammed. Trade-ins are fast, safe, and most importantly, convenient. I'll take this anyday over the little bit more money I'd get from marketplaces.
Oh, and also, selling your phone there will mean it'll likely end up in a landfill, which is much worse for the environment.

I fell for the bs. They promised $400 trade in for my XR so I said “screw it” $400 is more than what the phone is worth on the open used market so it seemed like a good deal. After I agreed to everything, ordered my new iPhone 13 mini and was told I was all good I went to bed pretty content. I’d get a good chunk off of the upgrade, cool. Next day I get a message saying that the actual price off the phone will only be $125. Almost three quarters less than what I was told initially.
Don’t do it. Hold on to your old phones as long as possible and if you really really HAVE to have an upgrade then at least sell it on the open market. You’ll get a much better price for your device.
I e kept all of my old phones. From my 3GS up to my current 12 mini. 5 in total. Do t know what I’ll do with them but I have them. lol.

Trade in values are comically bad. I've kept each and every iPhone I've ever owned.. and with good reason: having a backup is invaluable and has saved me numerous times (I'm sure I would have actually paid more money in the end if I would have traded in, and been forced to panic buy a new phone).
Plus holding onto phones that still have the headphone jack is extremely useful.
Actual answer: this brings Apple more money. Anything positive that comes after it, regardless of how insignificant it is, is to be promoted as the supposed main goal.

And I don't see how reparability matters here. If I ever have any issues with my Apple products, I just call my local Apple Store, and they'll send someone to fix it.

They do this because they argue that it would promote better effects for the environment as well as saving people's money. The environment part is hardly any better as we know that's not how Apple, as a company works. They even go outside of their ways to make sure devices sent to be destroyed are to be destroyed despite it being perfectly functional with very minor repair and stuff. Oh, and let's not forget their huge combined effort to make sure your device isn't going to be repairable unless authorized by Apple (money goes to Apple). I call environment effort bullshit. That's not even remotely true. Devices which can be fixed with minor repairs are refurbished, and there's concrete proof of them on Apple's refurb store, where slightly old but fully functional devices are sold for a significant discount.

I'm personally a no-case guy, and I already have a bunch of adapters lying around. So instead of being forced to pay $770 for an iPhone 12 for accompanied with stuff I don't need, I'm only paying 700 bucks. If someone does need any of it, they can buy it themselves.
If Apple just put all that stuff in the box, not only would it increase the cost of the phone, but it would also be worse for the environment because people who didn't need them would have to throw it away, eventually ending up in landfill.
And as for a screen protector, I had one on my 11 Pro, but looking at the amazing drop tests of the 12 series, I decided not to put one on my 12 Pro. Those flat sides and Ceramic Shield must have helped a lot. I suspect most other people wouldn't feel the need to put one either.
The thing is: there is a paradigm of "oh no my iPhone 11 broke, good thing I have my trusty iPhone 6S that'll carry me until the prices fall with the next release cycle". Apple may not want that
If your iPhone 11 broke, why wouldn't you just get it repaired? I can't imagine using a 6S in 2021.

Still worked OK, but it needed a new battery.
I'm using my old iPhone as an alarm clock. Eventually I'll take it apart to see what's inside. Oh, and I went back to a flip-phone. Life is so much better now.

In my country the trade in are actually decent. $630 for iPhone 11 256GB. They did unfortunately cost about $900 new though.
Edit: Surprisingly that is basically the same price you get for selling second hand. I guess they really want sales here.
They did that to prevent people from reselling and "giving away" their phones to friends or family. Phones are so good now that a 2017 model is barely any different from a new one because most people just watch videos and send messages/call

Well, technically if you only send messages, call, and watch some videos, pretty much *ANY* phone at least 6 years old will serve you well. My Dad uses a cheap Moto E6 play, as all he does on that phone is call.... And maybe once in while, he'll surf on social medias.

Why with every new launch the old phone gets slower and slower and at the end eventually stop working even it was in perfect condition and the only thing which we do is just downloaded the software update.
Does the company don't want a customer to use their previous devices for let say over 3-5 years.

You forgot to mention how opposed apple is to the 3rd party repair. It is another reason for trade-ins, it prevents spare parts ending up in the hands of repair shops.

I keep my iPhones for like 5 years. They never make trade ins worth it when I’m ready to get a new one
But what happens when people in these emerging markets upgrade their iphones? Does Apple buy them back again? Or do they have the necessary recycling capacity to handle the returned iphones? I have a feeling they just end up in landfills anyway, so while the problem is reduced I don't know if it's really fixed
I like the concept however with smaller businesses wanting a right to repair like Louis Rossman I wonder is this just a way to keep all profits and to encourage more unnecessary upgrades, then to exploit poorer emerging markets with the leftovers of our junk, considering all the clothes that gets sent there to over stock them putting the environmental impact in their backyard.
Refurbished products aren't junk. Every phone I've ever owned was refurbished and I've never had an issue (granted I've only ever had Samsung/Google phones, but the reviews of apple refurbished phones are good so it seems like most people have a good experience). I don't think Apple is "exploiting" them because Apple isn't the only option and they don't hide that it's refurbished. For the most part there's plenty of competition and people pick the phone that they like the best.
no average person in a developing country can afford a new iphone, but with the refurbishment program, they can afford one which is only a couple of years behind the curve. It about making the most use of the device. By increasing the use of the device, you are making it a more efficient use of money and materials.
I love trade in, I calculated how much an iPhone 12 Pro would cost if I traded in my iPhone 11 Pro, and I have to say, it costs 50% less than the usual, meaning it costs less than an iPhone 12 or 11.

After using an iPhone since my model 2, I finally jumped off the iOS bandwagon 2 months ago and bought a Microsoft Surface Duo (the price has been drastically reduced on the unit) running Android 10. I am totally blown away by how stable the platform is! Lovely tech. Ask me in a year if I am still impressed with it.
