- Apple has a long history of blockbuster products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad. But when it came to their smart watch, they broke from tradition. Deciding on the name Apple Watch instead of iWatch. So why was the ‘i’ prefix not used with Apple’s smart watch? Well that’s what I’ll explain in this video.

It's funny how no one can own the letter "i" but the word "Apple" is fine to own.

I’m probably sure most people don’t know how trade-makes work. As far as I know a trade make only applies to 1 particular Contacts. So Apple can be trademarked by Apple for all things tech but an Apple grower can still call there Apples Apples. And the Olympics can treatment 2012, 2016 or 2020 in the Contacts of a Global sporting event but a calendar maker can still put the year on their calendar.
I’m sure there are exceptions and other technicality’s but having a trade mark on something doesn’t mean anyone else can’t use it.
Also trade marks only apply as longed they are enforced by the trademark holder. So there’s that too.
imagine just loading your apple watch and it says "iWatch" then you look around to see who is watching lol

The prefix “i” is during steve jobs era, and as new CEO tim cook try to differentiate the naming approach of products that were developed during his era (apple watch, apple pencil, airpods, apple card and the newly airtag)
@Lone Wolf apple's naming scheme is basically:
i = legacy name
air = wireless
pod = sound
apple = "main" product
mac = computer
book = notebook
pro = more advanced (and more expensive)
max = bigger

We're probably now used to it since there have been many iterations of the Apple Watch now released, although I've still seen some people call it an iWatch. But Apple Watch definitely sounds a lot better and more professional imo.

When trying to remember the name of this thing in a conversation the other day I actually said it was iWatch. Worst thing is the other person did not even correct me 😂
People call it Iwatch so many times I actually don’t even correct them anymore
I am usually the kind of person who calls things by exact name like iPhone, iPad, etc but I still say iwatch instead of Apple Watch.

No they can't. Apple tried to own the "i" prefix, but it failed.
if the design of the watch is sufficiently similar, then yes, they could. They can't sue the maker just because of the name, however.

This is somehow reminding me of how Apple had to brand their "AirPort" products as "AirMac" products in Japan. In Mac OS 10.8, they dropped the name for built-in Wi-Fi interfaces, likely to follow iOS, and was to me, a welcome change.

Personally, I think apple also decided to not name it “iWatch” because it could have made many people feel uncomfortable - as that name could seem to suggest apple would be “tracking” your ever movement & activity you do

I think in addition to that explanation there is a shift going on at Apple & their naming strategy - away from i-product names altogether. When they started the i branding it stood for internet-capabailites, which isn't sth special nowadays. In order to set the companie free from this i-branding they started to transform the naming of products to a variety of branding-prefixes: apple card, apple watch, homepod, airpod, airpower etc. I don't think that there will never be a "new" product line with the i-prefex ever again (in my opinion they should even consider re-naming existing product lines to bring more order and logic to their product naming)

Because you can’t talk for 3 minutes just to say that the square symbolizes an app icon like the shape of the apps on their screen so they know they can tap on it just like an app.
its not a big history you have the OG home button with the square, then the touch Id home button, then the solid state home button, and now no home button

ITV in the UK has existed as a name since the 1950s and stands for Independent TeleVision. Originally I used by the ITA (Independent Television Authority) as a generic term for their individual franchise companies when the UK had only two television channels which were labelled ITV and BBC on sets. I remember our first television set had a single rotary switch with two positions.
I knew back in the day that Apple was going to have problems with using the "i" as there were countless generic products out there that started putting the "i" in front of everything. Though I do think the iWatch and iTV names sound dumb. I had heard someone already had the icloud domain, and sold it to Apple for millions of dollars. And back in the day, I had thought of trying to buy "i" domains in anticipation of future Apple products and services. But then I abandoned that idea when it was apparent that Apple were going to stop putting the "i" in front of everything.
Right.
And apple paid MILLIONS and MILLIONS to the Beatles for the rights to the Apple name. (Not Really. Look it up...)

When it introduced the Apple Watch, many consumers wondered why it was not named the iWatch for consistency with the company's product line. Apple was unable to name the Apple Watch the iWatch because of trademark issues in multiple countries, including the U.S., UK, Switzerland, and China.

Additionally, this has been a constant issue with most other Apple products that start with “i”…in which they had to either pay or settle in court with whoever owned whatever name.
Basically, Apple got tired of all those legal problems that would result in the company losing a lot of money…so they’re opting for options they already own (but still sound good).

The reason that it was not named “iWatch” is because Apple didn’t want people to be cautious about the watch, because it sounds very eerie.
iWatch kinda seems like it would mean “I watch you.”

But I’m sure Tim’s answer “I kinda like Watch” at the time was much easier and nicer of an answer than it was to say some assholes already trade marked the name iWatch thinking they would make a bundle of money off Apple to buy the trademarked name… Sucks to be them because we’re using Watch instead and now they’re stuck with a trademark they didn’t want in the first place and lost the money they paid for it too… suckers!!! 😂😂😂

also pretty common that additional gear is called apple XYZ, like the watch was an extention to iphone, so appel watch, trackpad an extension of imac, so apple trackpad etc

There's a computer for restaurants that is just a tiny box that generates a display taken from the point of sale system and presents simple row of buttons to do things like complete the current item; it's called "IPAD" and has been around for decades. It appears to still be sold under that name.

I own and love multiple Apple TVs and an Apple Watch. The watch was always the obvious one but for some reason I never made the correlation with the TV.
Cisco also has the trademark on iOS and apple still licenses it from them
Thinking about the whole 'owning the letter i' made me think about the company Omega. Do they 'own' the letter Omega given that their logo is simply the letter omega?
