in the '70's, the drum sets/kits started getting 2 blocks long. you're absolutely right. (they say the best umpires and refs are the ones you don't notice). Charlie was the best.
Sure, great jazz drummers like Joe Morello or Gene Krupa showed that you could sound great with a small drum kit. Or in the context of rock n roll: Ringo. Not sure about Charlie, I think his playing is too minimalistic for my taste. Maybe because overall I prefer Beatles to Stones...

I know nobody knows this tune, but 'Back To Zero' off of the Dirty Work album had a sweet groove/pocket that, as a bass player, I loved to cover in various bands through the late 80's
I'm sad that I was so much into RUSH, Journey, Dokken..etc that I never gave this amazing drummer and band a chance. Now I am making up for lost time. Listening to the songs now and his drumming, it makes me sad. I missed out. Very much. He is something else!! I'm very impressed. R.I.P to a legend.
Charlie’s work on Gimme Shelter on the 75 tour was incredible. No wonder they named the bootleg at the L.A Forum Charlie Watts and his fabulous Rolling Stones. My most prized piece of vinyl.
I love the way Charlie Watts finishes a song. You can hear it clearly on "Monkey Man". Charlie pounds the band out of the song. The drumming on the song is solid and understated, and then he finishes off the song with power and authority. Clean and pure and crisp, and uniquely Charlie Watts.
Charlie was a jazz drummer who played in a rock group. Check out "Can You Hear Me Knocking" to hear rock drumming at its most elegant. His heroes Max Roach, "Philly" Joe Jones, and Art Blakey are awaiting Charlie's arrival, wherever they are now.
Great list. Although, I still think Charlie’s work on the song “We Love You” is his best work. From the 2:00 mark until the end of the song Charlie completely takes over that song. Phenomenal drumming!
I met Charlie Watts in Import Bazaar in Montreal in July 1972. He was beautifully dressed in a dark blue suede jacket, trimmed with red leather.......obviously made to measure and obviously very expensive. We chatted about the music scene in SW London approx 4 years previously. I had seen them play at a College and Uni. hang out, the old 1920's Hotel on Eel Pie Island in the Thames at Twickenham. He was a very gentle, quiet person, and had 2 body-guards with him. They were playing The Montreal Forum...Mick was not coming out of the hotel Charlie said. This was when Margaret Trudeau was supposed to have had a fling with Mick Jagger, but as she has said in recent years, it was not with Mick Jagger , it was with Ronnie Wood. On their recent Gig in Canada Mick Jagger said that they, (the Stones), loved the Trudeau family, and especially Margaret Trudeau very much....and he smirked. Take from that what you will. It is available on a video here on you tube. It was The Stones in Vancouver. God bless Charlie, he was a lovely person
When I first saw The Stones Tattoo You Tour 1981 Hartford Civic Center, Charlie had the smallest basic Rock n Roll Drum Set and laid down the smoothest beat. Just amazed how he didn't go for the loaded out drum sets you see out there. As a fan only perspective. Tattoo You Tour 1981, Steel Wheels Tour 1989 and No Security Tour 1999.
Watts had a lazy relaxed way of playing which was exactly what the Stones' music needed. This can be perfectly heard on Black And Blue. Just listen to the intro of Hey Negrita... That's Charlie Watts at his best. Or any song on that album really. Charlie never sounded better. Memory Motel, Crazy Mama, Hot Stuff, Hand Of Fate. Every one of them shows Charlie's genius drumming.
Bought a book in the 80's with Stones interviews. Also read lot of Keith interviews. In the book Bill Wyman explained that the band leader was Charlie and Keith follow him, the beat.. Sometimes Keith pushed stronger riffs, Charlie change the beat to keep the sound but afterwards he got the "command". In Keith interviews he said that between the two existing a instinct coordenation.. Seeing and listening them alive is true. Was the Stones Sound. Keith Moon was great, Billy Cobham, the fabulous John Bonham etc.. Lots of them. Ringo Star...? A few, and Won't Come Easy is is great song.. No comparation. Charlie Watts with a very simple drums got it all the sound. Not a "exibicionist" with great solo games etc. From Gimmie Shelter to Miss You, all the songs of Sticky, Exile was him behind, just a paid of attention for the records and Bill and Keith were right. He was no show off but his beat grooves. Stones sound are between the two, a fabulous Mix! Hard to explain but they are the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the world..
Been playing drums a long time. I always thought he was overlooked when people discussed great drummer. He had exceptional fills, but his timing was perfect, seriously perfect. RIP
The announcement of his death on the radio should have had the 1969 studio version of Honky tonk women with the opening cowbells, snare and bass drum of the instantly recognizable drum beats in the background. Have it repeat endlessly by looping it.
She's So Cold is a fun one too that I really love. Charlie does some really nice tom tom work on beautiful fills along with those tasty triplets on the hi-hat and accentuated with his signature crashing china cymbal.
if simplicity is beautiful, then 'all down the line's' intro is one of my favorites EVER. Charlie and Keith together make up a simple, yet irresistible intro to a classic from 'Exile on Main street'! these white boys had rhythm. bust another bottle, yeah!
My favourite Charlie moments are 10 miss you, 9.Honley tonk woman, 8. One hit to the body, 7.jumping jack flash, 6.you gotta move( Charlie just makes that track) 5. Satisfaction 4.Hold on to your hat 3.Get off of my cloud 2.Paint it black 1. Flip the switch (what an intro from Charlie).
Charle had the incredible talent for playing exactly what a song needed, no more and no less. - and if you think that is easy, try it some time. - when I played covers of Stones’ songs, I realized this and how deceptive his playing is - it’s not what you play but how - and I learned that what Charlie shared with Ginger Baker, and they were virtually the only drummers playing rock who had it, was a sense of SWING - “Casino Boogie” on Exile on Main Street is exemplary; this feel is virtually a lost art these days - both Ginger and Charlie had the same attitude for their playing: they were there to lift the band and make everybody else sound good, it wasn’t look at me - it’s a sad time for me; now with Charlie’s passing there’s only one left [BC] here on Earth of my personal pantheon (Ginger Baker - Billy Cobham - Elvin Jones - Mitch Mitchell - Keith Moon - Charle Watts - Tony Williams). - thank you for posting this tribute
Charlie's drumming on Rock/Hard Place is fantastic! Anyone starting out on drums would do themselves well to play along with Charlie. He knew how to keep a beat.
The Stones roots were in the blues where the rhythm section is no frills bare bones. Charlie fit the bill. And he survived because other than Keith Richards, there was no room for another member to take any of the spot light away from Mick. So much of Charlie's longevity in the band was due to his low key personality, likeable character and his reliability, not his technical prowess as a drummer. A more gifted drummer like Keith Moon or John Bonham would not have fit in the Stones stylistically or personality wise. Charlie never let his ego get away from him which is amazing given the circumstances.
I think one thing that should not be overlooked, is that Charlie held his sticks in "traditional grip", look at his left hand. Very few drummers do this. This style is very powerful compared to the various fingertip grip of most contemporary drummers. Listen to Charlies's commanding snare drum work. Few can compare!

Ok so, as a drummer I have to ask this question about his style. When he played the hihat, he didn't play on the upbeat with the snare, he totally left it out. Is this on purpose? Was this a bad habit? Drummers, what do you say...?
It was a habit that turned out to be good in that it made the backbeat more pronounced. Some drum teachers might have discouraged it but there's no right or wrong in music.
I like Drummers like Charlie Watts, he played the steady Rock Groove, nothing else is important to play RocknRoll. Bass Drum + Snare Drum featured. All other Drummers are Divas, trying to say: I am the greatest (dubble strokes, Paradiddle etc.), but Charlie was concentrated in playing pure Rock Music, no complicated breaks and stupid Solo Parts like all others . I will miss you , Charlie 😥 waltnRoll ....
YES!! That mans kit was something you can buy in a second hand shop, and you knew when Charles played. When Mick and Keith hired him, they had no idea what kind of drummer they hired. I never liked RS but Charles Watts is in my heart.
Probably the best musician is the world’s greatest rock band. My 2 favorite of Charlie’s song: #1 easily is emotional rescue. #2 a little t & a, such an underapreciated song. Charlie was money on that track.

Awesome, I am glad that I got tickets to the LA show. The Stones have vowed to play until they drop. So, the only thing that could stop this tour is the pandemic.
It's like the grateful dead without jerry. It's not the stones anymore. Sad but true. If you saw them live then you know
Dear@@jongoldey3842 ~ I Love Charlie, ALSO. HIS Demise is Crushing.. Without A Doubt!! But Please Give The Other Guys The Respect That They ARE DUE. Please..?
@@poohbearsauntie I don't think he was being disrespectful, he was just emphasizing how important Charlie Watts was to the Rolling Stones' sound.
Got pitt Oct 4th, Charlie was the one who told them too use steve Jordan for these shows and that's Keith's main sideman, obviously its gonna sound different but hopefully some kinda tribute during show like playing shine a light with video montage
Ain’t no one gonna fill the shoes of Carlie Watts . He was one off, unique drummer.
Big like watching here
Big thanks for watching, my dear friend!!
When it is going to hit them, is the first time they step on stage and Charlie is not there. DEEP!

Rest In Peace, Charlie Watts!
I like Drummers like Charlie Watts, he played the steady Rock Groove,
nothing else is important to play RocknRoll. Bass Drum + Snare Drum featured. All other Drummers are Divas, trying to say: I am the greatest (dubble strokes, Paradiddle etc.), but Charlie was concentrated in playing pure Rock Music, no complicated breaks and stupid Solo Parts like all others .
I will miss you , Charlie 😥
waltnRoll ....
R.I.P. Charlie Watts
YES!! That mans kit was something you can buy in a second hand shop, and you knew when Charles played. When Mick and Keith hired him, they had no idea what kind of drummer they hired.
I never liked RS but Charles Watts is in my heart.
Nobody had the snare drum pop like Charlie did . Nooooobodeeeee .
Probably the best musician is the world’s greatest rock band. My 2 favorite of Charlie’s song: #1 easily is emotional rescue. #2 a little t & a, such an underapreciated song. Charlie was money on that track.
