When the announcement was made that the Rolling Stones’ upcoming tour wasn’t going to include Charlie, fans were understandably concerned. The longtime drummer had famously made it through two separate periods of drug addiction, as well as a battle with throat cancer, without ever having to cancel a tour.
Fans were scared that Charlie’s health might be failing, though it was hard to grasp exactly what the reason had been for him deciding not to go on the tour. There were rumors that he had undergone heart surgery, though these rumors were unsubstantiated. The announcement did say that Charlie had undergone a successful operation of some kind, though what kind of operation wasn’t specified.
The last anyone had heard, Charlie was withdrawing from the upcoming tour so that he could recover from his successful operation. The announcement was made on August 4, 2021, and Charlie was dead several weeks later. Possibly, whatever operation Charlie had undergone wasn’t as successful as it had seemed. Otherwise, perhaps the aging drummer had succumbed to some other kind of issue that proved his inevitable undoing.
Charlie is survived by his wife and daughter. Charlie was married only once during his lifetime and was still married to his first wife upon the time of his death. His wife’s name was Shirley, and they had a daughter named Serafina. The Rolling Stones are set to go forward with their upcoming tour, with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards as the only remaining members from the band’s classic line-up. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at the legendary drummer of the Rolling Stones. RIP Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones drummer.

I’m a rock and roll fan. And a Rolling Stones fan. At my school, I sometimes see students wearing Rolling Stones shirts.
Mark Hollis death & career of Talk Talk lead singer. What he passed from 28 months ago. If u can Ty’s ! Great tribute to Charlie! Ty’s so much !❤️from🇺🇸🙏
The Stones will always be the greatest rock n roll band in all of history !!!

If you are going to tell the truth, why can't you tell that Charlie was Jewish?
A class act, a great drummer, and a gentleman. RIP Charlie Watts.
Thanks for watching, Jesse!
Just loved Charlie the Heart & Beat of the Rolling Stones, and a stylish gentleman. R.I.P.
Charlie watts passing makes me sad. I didn't know him personally but from what I've heard he was a good fellow. R.I.P. MR WATTS
Thanks for watching, Mark!
In concert, I've seen Mick forget where he was in a song, Keith play the wrong intro, and saw Ronnie lose it in the middle of a song over something Keith did. However, in all the live performances I attended I never saw Charlie miss a beat. RIP Charlie.
It's remarkable that he stayed married to his wife throughout the entire career of the Stones. With the touring and the lifestyle that goes with it, Charlie and his wife must have had a strong bond.
Thanks for watching, Mark!
Yes, I agree, if a man can stay married and sustain his first marriage for many years then Kudos to him.
Wish more men could stay in their relationships and try harder to commit ! 😉
@@janecitizen8884 Yearh, really.
Charlie & Shirley met when they were teenagers or early 20's. They had a very well grounded life together completely removed from the Stones + rock n roll. They loved dogs, horses, gardening and family life. He often said being in the Stones was 'simply work'. Such a lovely, classy man. End of an era...probably the end of the Stones performing live after this final tour.
@@janecitizen8884 What a riduculous example of sexism your comment is
Took his status as a rock and roll icon in stride, and was always more concerned with being a family man. A great drummer gone, and never to be forgotten.
Thanks for watching, T!
Thanks for the music Charlie. You will be missed. RIP.
Thanks for watching, Gerald!
Of all of the members of the Rolling Stones he was the one guy, with Bill Wyman to a small extent, who autographed anything for fans. Fans absolutely adored him because he never refused an autograph. An old time gentleman
I agree, the fact that he still signed autographs for his fans speaks volume.
Charlie Watts was interesting, honest and classy. I feel for his family who will be without him. RIP
I love how Charlie’s apparel always was so non-rock ‘n’ roll which kind of makes it hard-core rock ‘n’ roll!
Exactly!
Thanks for watching, Howie!
@@FactsVerse Certainly. You have some pretty good content. Thank you for the work that you put in.
I've seen the Stones over 100 times throughout my life. Without Charlie, they will never be the same. Time to close up shop. RIP, Mr. Watts.
Thanks for watching, Andi!
Agree. Not the Stones without Charlie. Helluva long great haul though. Much love to Charlie and his family and other Stones fans who are sad and a little bit lonely these past few days.
100 times? how do you even have the time for that?
If every band did that there wouldn't be any
I think they can finish this tour out sept
Hello dear, thanks for being a great fan !!
It will not be the same. With iconic bands, once a member passes or leaves, it's hard to capture the soul of these bands. RIP, Mr Watts
Thanks for watching, Maria!
Keith Richards has always lauded Charlie Watts and you can see him trying to coax Charlie out at press opportunities or when they take their final bows after concerts. I appreciate how much Keith appreciated Charlie. That's a relationship no one else can ever know -- a private, intimate relationship making music together for 60 years in the studio and on seemingly endless world tours.
Definitely won't be the same without Charlie...He will be missed...rip Charlie Watts..We love you 🥰🥁🎶
Thanks for watching, Land Mermaid!
Rest In Peace Charlie and thank you. I am certain that he has already been welcomed in heaven to thunderous applause. As for "The Stones", Charlie provided the heart beat for the group. Anything that they do now, will just not be the same. "The Stones" are not "The Stones" without Charlie. They are all great performers, but the band will not be the same. That calm sophistication in the middle of all "The Stones" craziness driving that heart beat can not be replicated. Thank you Charlie, you are unforgettable, Bill Baker
Thanks for watching!
@@FactsVerse , although I have watched many of the tribute videos for Charlie, this was well done and contained some new aspects, so it was really worth watching. Thank you sincerely @Facts Verse, Bill Baker
Nobody will be able to replace his sound, RIP sir, our prayers go to his wife and family
He was a handsome older man for sure, he was amazing and so talented. RIP Charlie, you will be missed.💕

Rip Charlie watts,a great drummer . Played with the stones longer than I have been alive. 😢
Thanks for watching, Joe!
I've seen 45 live concerts of The Stones, worldwide. I think I'll never go again to see them without Charlie. With Bill was different, still there was a long road ahead; now it's over.
I agree I’m also done enjoyed em dozen times wouldn’t be same without him
Wow what a fan!, I can't imagine. How cool to see them mature and grow over the years. The poor Stones. They must feel lost.
I'll still go to enjoy the group and to honor Charlie
Thanks for watching!
Question - Did you ever attend a show when they weren't very late....and, which was the best show you ever attended
Sadly the heartbeat of the stones has stopped. God bless you Charlie and may you rest in peace.
Hello dear, thanks for being a great fan !!

The Stones will never be the same. He was a rarity in any facet of entertainment, only one wife for almost 60 years. Thoughts go out to his wife and family. RIP

Charlie Mick and the entire band always have been favorites of mine. Shattered and Mixed Emotions are my two best favorites. Rest in peace Charlie. The drum kit will never die off. Remember that.

Great musician and a lovely gentleman. Much love to him and his family and close friends.
Love you Charlie. Thank you.
RIP Charlie. The Stones will never be complete again.
Thanks for watching, Norma!
Out of all the band members he aged the best. I’m so glad he was able to beat his demons. Rest in peace Charlie
Thanks for watching, Theresa!
He was such a classy handsome man.
Hello dear, thanks for being a great fan !!
So sad he won't be around for the Stones' 60th Anniversary in 2023 He deserved to be there.
When he dressed up, Charlie Watts looked like royalty. He could walk the palace grounds and not be questioned.
Thanks for watching!
I'm surprised Queen Elizabeth didn't invite Charlie Watts to dinner.
I believe Mr. Watts knew very well which side of the bread was buttered for him. He kept time for a band that had longevity and amassed a tidy fortune. He indulged other aspects of his life, ( horses, cricket, graphic arts, jazz, cars, ) which his affluence allowed. His commitment to his wife was uncommon in the rock world. He had a good run for his money!
I would describe him as having head a full, rich life.
The man was a real human being and a true talent R.I.P my man
Thanks for watching, Xman B!
I’ve heard good things about Charlie since he passed. He helped make great music and became iconic which is legendary. I love the Stones and condolences to Shirley and family. I hear his jazz is wonderful and I intend on checking it out. Thanks for posting
A drummer friend holds Charlie Watts in "high regard" and considers him "highly underrated". He also had this to say: "Without Charlie, the Stones locomotive would have derailed long ago." I don't doubt that for a minute! Everyone from Brian May of Queen, to Pete Townshend of the Who, to Eric Burdon of the Animals noted that he was the kindest gentleman in the industry. Thankfully, this Good Man stayed with us a long time!
RIP bloke... At least you made it till 80.. Its a long term band for sure, since I was a young girl.. They had SO MANY great hits. Mick was always a wild guy, Charlie more quiet, but always played great drums. God bless him for kickin the devil beast Heroin, which is either lick it, or die from it. Props to him for that. Also, for being married to Shirley for 57 long years.. Condolences to her, (the wife), his daughter, and grands.. Fly high Charlie.. You were very cute as a young boy...God rest your soul luv...💙🙏✨💛🙏⭐✨⭐

I really hope Rolling Stones will make this their farewell tour. And dedicated to Charlie’s memory. I really hope they do that. That would be a good ending to a great career.
Thanks for watching, Bernard!
The Rolling Stones have already had their farewell tour. Any tour without Charlie is not the Rolling Stones.
@@laserluver1 agreed 👍
R.I.P. Charlie!!! You were my favorite drummer ever!!!
Thanks for watching, Karyn!
I can’t imagine the Stones without Charlie. He was the symbolic calm cool counterpart to the zesty devilishly whimsical and energetic Mick. There will never be a band with anywhere near their charisma and never a solid dependable drummer like Charlie Watts. He will be missed.

I agree completely. Class.
Wait & see! Charlie wasn't scheduled to go on an upcoming tour - there was/is a substitute drummer scheduled so let's see what the 'Stones decide. The next one to drop will definitely be the deciding factor!👅
@@lorainewhite727 Agree & Steve Jordan & Charlie's replacement were great friends & Charlie hand picked him for this tour & had also suggested Jordan for the work on Keith's solo albums. He'll do a fine job . No it isn't Charlie But! The Stones will roll on as he wanted them to anyway! Let them Rock as long as they feel they can do it.
Strange, but I feel like I lost a dear friend . Rip Charlie, won’t be the same without you 🥲
Thanks for watching, Rosemary!
The Passing of Charlie Watts has hit me hard....like no
Other Musician....RIP my Brother !!!
From what I hear. Mr. WATTS wasn't exactly you're typical heroin addict. In his own honest fashion Charlie said.. In the mid 80s he was going through a type of midlife crisis and started to self medicate with stimulant pills and heroin. He found that it didn't help for very long. He said it nearly cost him his marriage and his job with the Stones. He was 45 or so at the time and after Keith advised him to knock it on the head!, he did. He proceeded to go cold turkey and gave up the cigarettes while he was at it. Doesn't sound like he had a serious drug habit to me and to give up smoking cigarettes at the same time says all you need to know about Charlie Watts. A strong willed individual with a mind of his own. He also could be a little eccentric as most people know and as honest as they come, as far as I know. Rest in peace Mr. WATTS and thanks for the music.
Thanks for watching, Shea!
RIP CHARLIE WATTS AND GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS

It's not the same anymore, but they are still well worth seeing. I've already seen them twice and I'm grateful for it. WOW, what shows!!!

Just to answer the last question: no, the Stones will never be the same without Charlie. RIP

The days of Charlie and Keith creating dynamic tension musically are long gone. Still, it won't be the Rolling Stones without Charlie. RIP Charlie.

ZZ Top and Fabulous Thunderbirds opened. Pouring rain.
Hpw many times did they play Amsterdam? 'Cos in interviews both Charlie & other members tell of him being asleep & Mick coming banging on the door looking for "his drummer".... the rest is history....😉
Rest In Peace Mr. Watts. Love you always
Thanks for watching, Lionheart!
So long, Charlie; well done.
Thanks for watching, Seth!
It's still hard to swallow, I always thought Charlie Watts would be around for at least 10+ years.
Thanks for watching!
The guy was 80 ! That's not exactly young !!
@@grimtraveller7923 True, but Clint Eastwood is 91, and is still making movies and working. My point is, is that no one saw this coming, because he had a successful surgery and was preparing to return to the Rolling Stones and continue playing the drums. Which by the way is a physically demanding instrument, but Charlie obviously felt up to it, then BLAM, he is gone. I have been a Stones fan since I was old enough to be one, and yes, it is still a hard pill for me to swallow, Charlie Watts is the only drummer I ever have known for the Stones, and now never to be again. RIP Charlie, you will be greatly missed.
@@LiberalsAreTrash I don't think anyone saw it coming. But I'm not particularly surprised that an 80 year old drummer dies. The surprise is the timing. It's not like we thought "oh, he's about to die", the way we did with Amy Winehouse.
My earliest memory comes from 1965 and it's the Stones doing "Get off of my cloud", so he's kind of connected with my life. I've loved his drumming since 1979. Although ironically, my favourite piece of drumming on a Stones' song isn't by him, it's by Jimmy Miller on "You can't always get what you want."
@@grimtraveller7923 I get what you are saying, Charlie wasn't a young man, but did appear to be fit for playing the drums. If he wasn't expected to come back with the band it would have been different, at least for me. That is what surprised me, everything seemed to be going well for him and then BLAM, it's over. Life is very fragile in the end.
Keith stated many times that the band would end without Charlie. I feel Keith should keep his word. There’s no Stones without Charlie. So sad.
Thanks for watching, Rose!

I disagree I got tickets 👍🏼❤️❤️ lol I think they love it
It's never the same when someone New takes over, which is not fair on the replacement member, everyone will compare them to Charlie, same has happen to the Eagles with the death of Don Frey. it's all down to how greedy they are.
Why call it a day? Charlie picked Steve Jordon for the job. Nobody ever told B.B. King and many others to hang it up! If they desire to play til they drop then more power to them!
An astute gentleman drummer with a wicked foot and feel! We love you Charlie!
Ian Stewart & Brian Jones started the band. Keith has said many times he always feels Ian's presence when they play, and he always considered it Ian's band, to this day! RIP Charlie Watts, u r the man, u gave us the groove and made us laugh! Thank You 😊

I'd love nothing than to see The Rolling Stones perform but it wouldn't be the same without Charlie for sure
People keep saying that it is not going to be the same without Charlie as a drummer, ignoring the fact that Charlie himself asked his best friend Steve Jordan drummer to be his replacement, it wasn't like a random choice, it was Charlie's expertise and people should honor his wisdom..

I never had the opportunity to see the Rolling Stones. If I could afford it, and had transportation, I'd see them. I've always been fascinated with the Glimmer Twins, I'd regret not seeing Charlie. I preferred it when Bill Wyman was the bassist. I am so grateful I can still enjoy the band (since the early 70's). Even if it's not in person.

I understood their long running success even more after experiencing a live show. They were a force of nature, probably always were since their first show. Charlie's snare drum alone was epic.
The Rolling Stones "AT THE MAX",

AT THE MAX is available on DVD, Blu-Ray as well I imagine.
Closet thing to being on Stage with the Stones. Watch on BIG Screen with a killer Sound System!

Charlie will never be replaced, but The Rolling Stones I Hope, will Not stop their Rock & Roll Tours and making Music. They can carry on and get another Drummer, perhaps entertain the thought of asking Ringo Starr, wouldn’t THAT be something!!! The Stones and Ringo Starr, Iconic Music from a mix of the 2 Bands that turned the Tide. Too. Much Talent there to lay Dormant. Still have too much to give to the Fans. Rest in the Promises of Christ Charlie, you are a Legend and won’t be easily forgotten. You will stay in the Hearts and minds of all Stones Fans, Thank you- Thank you for all you have been and remain to be in our Bittersweet memories.
God bless Charlie Watts, the silent stone, he will be missed greatly. I don't think I truly appreciated his drumming until I listened to Keith's solo tour back in 88 and he played Rolling Stones songs. That's when I realized just how great Charlie Watts IS at drums. Subtle most of the time, but a railroad-car impact when he needed to be. Steve Jordan is a great drummer, and I hope he meshes well with the band, and I hope he doesn't become disappointed with fans saying he's not Charlie Watts. My advice is to be the best "YOU" that you can be.
It has definitely been hard listening to my favorite band, the Rolling Stones lately. As a guitarist, that's the instrument I usually focus on, and now I've been focusing on Mister Charles, and realizing the contrast of most drummers on my shuffle, and Charlie. Charlie, I will miss you greatly.
For the surviving members of the Rolling Stones, I offer my condolences. However, if Mick and most importantly Keith wish to continue to create music, and tour, I will be there. I couldn't imagine my life without your music. God Bless.
