When the announcement was made that the Rolling Stones’ upcoming tour wasn’t going to include Charlie, fans were understandably concerned. The longtime drummer had famously made it through two separate periods of drug addiction, as well as a battle with throat cancer, without ever having to cancel a tour.
Fans were scared that Charlie’s health might be failing, though it was hard to grasp exactly what the reason had been for him deciding not to go on the tour. There were rumors that he had undergone heart surgery, though these rumors were unsubstantiated. The announcement did say that Charlie had undergone a successful operation of some kind, though what kind of operation wasn’t specified.
The last anyone had heard, Charlie was withdrawing from the upcoming tour so that he could recover from his successful operation. The announcement was made on August 4, 2021, and Charlie was dead several weeks later. Possibly, whatever operation Charlie had undergone wasn’t as successful as it had seemed. Otherwise, perhaps the aging drummer had succumbed to some other kind of issue that proved his inevitable undoing.
Charlie is survived by his wife and daughter. Charlie was married only once during his lifetime and was still married to his first wife upon the time of his death. His wife’s name was Shirley, and they had a daughter named Serafina. The Rolling Stones are set to go forward with their upcoming tour, with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards as the only remaining members from the band’s classic line-up. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at the legendary drummer of the Rolling Stones. RIP Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones drummer.

Charlie & Shirley met when they were teenagers or early 20's. They had a very well grounded life together completely removed from the Stones + rock n roll. They loved dogs, horses, gardening and family life. He often said being in the Stones was 'simply work'. Such a lovely, classy man. End of an era...probably the end of the Stones performing live after this final tour.

Anything that they do now, will just not be the same. "The Stones" are not "The Stones" without Charlie. They are all great performers, but the band will not be the same. I believe Mr. Watts knew very well which side of the bread was buttered for him. He kept time for a band that had longevity and amassed a tidy fortune. He indulged other aspects of his life, ( horses, cricket, graphic arts, jazz, cars, ) which his affluence allowed. His commitment to his wife was uncommon in the rock world. A drummer friend holds Charlie Watts in "high regard" and considers him "highly underrated". He also had this to say: "Without Charlie, the Stones locomotive would have derailed long ago." I don't doubt that for a minute! Everyone from Brian May of Queen, to Pete Townshend of the Who, to Eric Burdon of the Animals noted that he was the kindest gentleman in the industry. Thankfully, this Good Man stayed with us a long time!

From what I hear. Mr. WATTS wasn't exactly you're typical heroin addict. In his own honest fashion Charlie said.. In the mid 80s he was going through a type of midlife crisis and started to self medicate with stimulant pills and heroin. He found that it didn't help for very long. He said it nearly cost him his marriage and his job with the Stones. He was 45 or so at the time and after Keith advised him to knock it on the head!, he did. He proceeded to go cold turkey and gave up the cigarettes while he was at it. Doesn't sound like he had a serious drug habit to me and to give up smoking cigarettes at the same time says all you need to know about Charlie Watts. A strong willed individual with a mind of his own. He also could be a little eccentric as most people know and as honest as they come, as far as I know. My point is, is that no one saw this coming, because he had a successful surgery and was preparing to return to the Rolling Stones and continue playing the drums. Which by the way is a physically demanding instrument, but Charlie obviously felt up to it, then BLAM, he is gone. @@LiberalsAreTrash I don't think anyone saw it coming. But I'm not particularly surprised that an 80 year old drummer dies. The surprise is the timing. It's not like we thought "oh, he's about to die", the way we did with Amy Winehouse.
My earliest memory comes from 1965 and it's the Stones doing "Get off of my cloud", so he's kind of connected with my life. I've loved his drumming since 1979. Although ironically, my favourite piece of drumming on a Stones' song isn't by him, it's by Jimmy Miller on "You can't always get what you want."

@@grimtraveller7923 I get what you are saying, Charlie wasn't a young man, but did appear to be fit for playing the drums. If he wasn't expected to come back with the band it would have been different, at least for me. That is what surprised me, everything seemed to be going well for him and then BLAM, it's over. Life is very fragile in the end.

God bless Charlie Watts, the silent stone, he will be missed greatly. I don't think I truly appreciated his drumming until I listened to Keith's solo tour back in 88 and he played Rolling Stones songs. That's when I realized just how great Charlie Watts IS at drums. Subtle most of the time, but a railroad-car impact when he needed to be. Steve Jordan is a great drummer, and I hope he meshes well with the band, and I hope he doesn't become disappointed with fans saying he's not Charlie Watts. My advice is to be the best "YOU" that you can be.
It has definitely been hard listening to my favorite band, the Rolling Stones lately. As a guitarist, that's the instrument I usually focus on, and now I've been focusing on Mister Charles, and realizing the contrast of most drummers on my shuffle, and Charlie. Charlie, I will miss you greatly.
For the surviving members of the Rolling Stones, I offer my condolences. However, if Mick and most importantly Keith wish to continue to create music, and tour, I will be there. I couldn't imagine my life without your music. God Bless.
