Man, what a difficult job to get called to, putting on the shoes of Charlie Watts, but I must say that Steve here nails it. We miss you Charlie, but remain assured, Steve is navigating the ship well.
I have no doubt Steve bring a lot to the table and has really improved the Stones' game. He's younger, faster and tighter than late 70 yr old Charlie. No disrespect to Charlie, but it's hard playing drums at that age.
I've yet to find any historical evidence of Steve Jordan not nailing something. Even without his long history with Keith Richards, I'm not sure there's anyone who could be better suited to the job.
Steve is one of my favorite drummers, but Charlie wrote the part and propelled the Stones from scratch to what they are. White guy stiffness and all. A lot of people say things like that about Charlie, but it takes one of the all time greats just to do his job. Charlie made those songs hit songs with a very distinctive style. In my mind, he was also one of the all time greats. There are a lot of great drummers out there with incredible abilities, but they aren't Charlie Watts and they aren't Ringo. But I know what you're saying. I understand.
Massive props to the production crew and sound engineers. The kit sounds like it was lifted straight from the record. I think if the kit sounded too "modern" it would of stuck out like a sore thumb but the production is just perfect.
I attended a benefit (MJF Parkinson’s Foundation) in the winter and Steve was the house drummer for the event. I didn’t know this going in. When I walked up the steps to the venue, I heard the crack of the snare and immediately turned to my wife and said, “I don’t know who that drummer is but I bet when we find out he’ll be famous.” Walked in and was so excited to see him sitting there. What a night!
@@jontheroadagainright, I understand that he called that section bolera, but where does that word come from and what does it mean? Does it refer to the specific drum pattern? Or is it a section of a song, like Chorus, Verse, Breakdown, etc?
I been playing guitar or bass for 50 years . This video gives me more inspiration than anything I've watched all year. Thanks Really appreciate it. Steve is a beast .
I love the way Steve recaptured the energy of the original that I grew up listening to. He has way more developed chops than Charlie Watts did, but Steve totally pays homage to him as an iconic forefather of rock drumming.
I thought that his comment on the period of Charlie’s playing he was emulating was particularly interesting. I’ve never heard of someone diving that deep into the career of someone they are replacing (not a great word to use, but factual). Even down to the set up Charlie used during that time, Remarkable, just remarkable, but that’s why Steve Jordan is who he is.
Probably gonna finally join drumeo for all the steve jordan lessons. Living legend and forever my favorite drummer! Thank you drumeo for getting him on. There isn't enough about steve out there!
Fantastic. Such interesting observations about the tempo and the nuances of the original recording. The bolero. By the 2010s Charlie was doing mind blowing fills on Paint It that were completely different than the fills on the original. Always one of my favourite numbers by Charlie. So cool that Steve harkened back to the original and especially to that tempo. Cheers and thanks for the great video!
I love his humble and professional personality. He has respect for the content and is thankful for the opportunity, yet he brings his own style 👏 I also started with just a snare drum(pearl, and a practice pad cuz we lived in an apartment)later my grandma and mom got together together me my first kit(a cb percussion 5 pc)I played the gell outta that thing and my first gig until I got my first peral export kit. Thanks for this drumeo, it takes all styles of music to make a musician 😎👌
I can't appreciate high enough what you guys of Drumeo do for the living drum community in all facilities of history, technique, inspiration and creativity and everything that entertains, gives us knowledge, ideas and a loooooooooooot of motivation !!! Thank you guys !!
That's his signature craviatto. It sings! The whole kits sounds so awesome live! Stood next to the stage and watched him warm up when the stones played at mbs. That concert was special
Jordan breaks Paint it Black down so it makes sense on the drums I've been playing it totally differently as I couldn't work out from the recordings. I'm glad he picked up on the Bolero as I've been doing it but wasn't sure if it was actually a bolero on the recording. Thanks 🙏👍
Stones fan here. Charlie's lost was huge, but Steve has captured the essence of Whatts drumming. I value a lot Steve work with the Stones and his rendition of Paint it Black is an example of his respect to the original. Great video.
Wow, fantastic stuff Drumeo. What a drummer this guy is. Not an easy track to play as Charlie did it. What an amazing career Steve has had. I'm still always stunned by Steve's drumming on The Blues Brothers Goin' Back to Miami.
Great video! Steve could easily have had the attitude of "Hey, I have nothing to prove here. I'm an established pro. I'll interpret these songs as I see fit." Instead, he pays respect - well-earned respect - to Charlie by studying and playing the songs the way we're used to hearing them. Perhaps Steve realized that by studying a legend like Charlie, his own playing would benefit. That's the mark of a true pro.
I don’t care what I’m doing, where I’m at or anything else, EVERY single time I hear this, I immediately think of a parody cover some dude did back in the day for the Stern Show in reference to Crazy Cabbie. “Wah wah wah wah wah wah……..lmao. This is another great video. ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
Absolute legend. Love Steve Jordan. I always think of the quote, I forget who said it, Paul Schaffer or Howard Shore maybe, when they were putting together the Blues Brothers band he said “you’d have to shoot Steve Jordan to get him off time.”
@@AaronLevyDrums Well I’d sure like to go through that selection and pick out a half a dozen or so to add to my quiver of snare drums. I’ll never be able to get enough snare drums. My hands-down favorite is a wood hoop 13 x 6 maple Allegra in a transparent ruby red with natural hoops.
It crushed me that he played the break in the middle different than the album version. Those splashy hihats punctuated by the snare before dropping back in is one of my favorite drum moments ever.
Steve Jordan was playing at my first concert experience as a kid with John Mayer Trio in Camden, awesome show he was killer. ill never forget his cigarette smoldering through all the blacked out light segments of the show
I have one of your signature snares just like the one in the video. It came with the steel rims too in case I wanted to change them. I had never had a wood rimmed snare but I love it. It saves so many sticks it's great. It takes a long time to dent the stick as opposed to chewing it up on the steel. I have been a fan of yours for many years since The Blues Brothers. Rock on!!!
My hero. And seeing the snares at the back and as he is probably the only drummer who brings at least 15 snares to each big tour with john mayer and clapton, I hope they will shot more vids including one about his thinking when it comes to those.
I wish when I was just starting to learn the drums that I'd not written off drummers like Ringo and Charlie Watts just because there weren't Neil Peart. There is so much to learn from how Charlie approached this track that I never paid attention to until watching Steve break it down in this video.
This really brings out how heavily rhythmic the original was. You can even hear that the original has a lot of additional percussive overdubs, especially at the end.

What an incredible experience working with Steve on his series of Drumeo videos. A living legend.
When will we get the video of Andy Hurley?
Did you get any of his pocket while he stopped by?
Others will come with Steve?
@BrandonTowes lucky you
About time :) Happy to see Steve at Drumeo

Steve Jordan is far better than Charlie. He can play Charlie's parts with more groove and none of the white guy awkward stiffness.
Steve was great when i saw them live, but there's something special & personal about Charlie's playing that left with him
Steve is one of my favorite drummers, but Charlie wrote the part and propelled the Stones from scratch to what they are. White guy stiffness and all.

Agreed, and from what I've seen Brandon Toews is a big reason why
I do miss Jared tho
@danby5912 What happened to Jared? It seemed like he was in all the videos, and then he just disappeared

If Steve doesnt make a “listens to a band for the first time” video I’ll riot
I'll be right there with you brother 😅

They should make him learn a Turnstile song.
Man....Steve is on other league... other vital moment
Misread : "I'll do it"

Been a fan of Jordan since seeing the John Mayer trio live. He's the king of groove. Love him!!!

they surely did a great job, but great part of the sound come from Steve's hands ;)
Love that Steve is respecting the brilliance of Charlie’s original drum parts and groove!
Now, this is how a conversation with a drummer should be captured! It sounds and looks the best ever!
Not a fan of the black & white videography.
Holy shit Steve Jordan is on Drumeo. Hallelujah

The bolero on the toms is siiiickk. It really adds even more drive and power to the song - what a brilliant choice by Steve Jordan!
I’ve never heard this term before this video. What is a “bolero”?
The middle section of the video demonstrates the bolero @@JustusandJustice
@@jontheroadagainright, I understand that he called that section bolera, but where does that word come from and what does it mean? Does it refer to the specific drum pattern? Or is it a section of a song, like Chorus, Verse, Breakdown, etc?
I've heard Ginger Baker use the term "Bolero" when talking about White Room. I believe it's a 18th-19th century Spanish style thing.
@@MysticMountainGems At first I thought you guys were kidding. Google "Ravel Bolero"... Just one of the most famous music in history...
