- The 40th anniversary of the Coca-Cola 600 had it all! Dale Earnhardt Jr makes his first Winston Cup start. Rookie Tony Stewart completes the double with an incredible top 10 finish in both races. Finally, Bobby Labonte and Jeff Burton battle not only for the win of one of the most prestigious races on tour, but also a million dollar bonus for their accomplishment.

Such great racing! These were the glory days of NASCAR. A crowd of 175,000+ (a sellout), 3 manufacturers with 3 completely DIFFERENT bodies, multiple engine programs, Earnhardt, Wallace, Rudd, Irvan, etc. the true good 'ole days.
I always loved the Cartoon Network cars
That opening with the military salute was beautiful.
So glad to have found this! My first race at age 13. Sat in the turn 2 grandstand. Great memories!
I have to say this race was watched by millions.....This was the Pinnacle of Nascar!!!!!
Tony Stewart had inner strength that few others did. Starting getting sick before the sun went down but had the sheer determination to not only finish, but contend for the win. He showed it again at Watkins Glen 5 years later. No one these days could come close to that willpower.
Dale Jr looking like a Backstreet Boys member
another classic coca-cola 600. classic dual between Jeff Burton and Bobby Labonte.
If anybody wonders why we love racing, just watch 32:50-33:30
+TheRacingJungle too bad the racing is not this way anymore
Except it is... People just want to think it isn't.
Brian Murray I agree
Brian Murray no it isn’t. Anymore the side by side is manufactured by “grip enhancement” and doesn’t last long. The crap racing we have today is 50% the cars and 50% lazy, spoiled drivers
MrPizzaboy88 I disagree we still have great racing. I hate people who say racing isn't as good as it use to be. Or football isn't as great as it use to be. It's still the same. It's just people put on there Nostalgia goggles and refuse to take them off. They still have great racing. Especially at Daytona and Talledega. Sunday's Martinsville race was great as well.
What a great race! Classic Ken Squire from the start. Dale Jrs first race. Tony Stewart leading laps after Indy. GREAT RACING the whole time and the fans reaction to winning a million was priceless. This is one ill recommend to someone wanting to watch a old race.
RIP Harry Melling, Steve Byrnes, Buddy Baker, Dale Earnhardt, Kenny Irwin & Bobby Hamilton
RIP Mike Hogewood as well
John Andretti
RIP Adam Petty, Davey Allison, Neil Bonnet and Alan Kulwicki.
And Ken Squier
stands are packed
Less expensive tickets back then
They still are
34:30 44 did a great job keeping it off the wall.
That Dale Earnhardt Jr. guy ended up doing pretty well for himself.
He fucking sucked
25 years ago. Time flies.
AAAHHH!!!! I was lookin' for this race!!!!! Thank you SO much!!!!!
This had to be one of the last events Squier would do Play-By-Play for. In 2000 CBS was fully using Mike Joy, and TBS put Bestwick in the booth.
Bestwick went into booth in Fall.
The 1997 Michigan race was the last CBS race Squier did play-by-play on.
Dale Jrs. first start!
I can't believe they never showed how Jeff passed Bobby for the lead after their final pit stops. I was there at the exit of turn 2. When Bobby came out of his pits, Jeff was in the middle of 3 and 4. When Bobby was just getting up to speed in the back stretch, jeff caught him and passed him and some lapped cars on the apron, shooting up sparks. I was 12 years old at this race and that is THE image that remains in my head when I think of NASCAR.
Went to this race in 98, had garage passes from bobby allison team. Getting to mix with everyone on the infield and starting line was a real great experience. I lived a couple miles from the track. You either went to the race, or got out of town race weekend. If you didn't, you were stuck in your house, traffic was crazy.
At the time Dale Jr. sponsored Coke and Budweiser.
That outro was priceless.
I didn't know there were 2 Tony Stewart's in racing. The one here is about 1/3 the size of the team owner at Haas/Stewart Team.
1:00:43 no caution. Nascar made a good call on that one.
WreckEmUp2*fans who didn't watch until a few years ago* "That's why races back then were boring"
Some kid named Dale Earnhardt Jr made his debut in this race. Now he has 24 wins 2 Daytona 500s and the only one to ever win 4 straight talladega races
What a race! Jeff Burton did well, but there are a lotta guys who coulda won. Gordon ran well early, Park could have won,Labonte,Stewart,Martin. THIS IS WHAT THE 600 SHOULD BE. WHY HAVE PEOPLE FORGOTEEN THIS RACE?
Karl Singleton I was at this race. My last trip to the 600 but man it was a great day!
+Scott K. what did you see
+Joseph Bevacqua Well Steve Park was flying at the beginning of the race and then he ended up getting wrecked right in front of us. He was super fast early. Then watching Dale Jr in his first WINSTON CUP start and finally a nail biter of a finish at the end between labonte and burton. Plus I ran into former WWF wrestler Sgt Slaughter before the race and talked to he and his wife for a few minutes and had him sign my hat before he left. They were very nice!
Scott K. What happing to the 20#car that night
Joseph Bevacqua I can't remember without going back and watching the video. I think this was the race Tony had to be pulled out of his car because he was so worn out from driving at Indy earlier in the day.
Next year he was in much better shape and finished both races in a lot better condition.
One thing I noticed is that if you car was better you could actually pass regardless of air.
3:31:42. "Jeff Burton has a million reasons to celebrate"
Including the No Bull 5 Bonus, Jeff Burton earned $1,212,500 for winning the 1999 Coca-Cola 600.
Dale Jr. that blonde hair. lol
This is mine kind of racing
Fucking Tony Stewart at the end what a legend
Dale Jr. looking like Slim Shady
whoo!! dale jr
Failed to qualify: 01-Jeff Green, 91-Dick Trickle, 30-Derrike Cope, 58-Ricky Craven, 50-Dan Pardus*, 05-Morgan Shepherd, 14-Randy LaJoie, & 85-Carl Long*.
Due to copyright claims. Sorry!
Why is this not availible on mobile devices?
Jude Cole-Start The Car is such an underrated song.
Yeah the Pennsylvania 500 was his last.
1:31:31 and 2:23:54 were just bad luck. Park and Gordon both could have won the race
The racing is just as good......Brian France took over and screwed up the sport.
It's cool. Curious though. On mobile it's copyright claim but it's all good on a pc?
agreed! look at turn 4 and turn 2 = soldout! now Charlotte is lucky to get 70% full and the rest is tarped with advertisements! Labonte and Burton were relevant .. now both are average 20th place cars, even though Burton had a top 5 at New Hampshire 3 weeks ago
I was at that race. Back when Nascar was good. Todays race was lame. Lol
whats amazing, is that in NASCAR's most previous test, Kevin Harvick ran a 194 mph LAP. On new tires, in this race, leaders were running 172-173 mph laps.
+wolfman21 and which races were better? These 90's races are amazing!! NASCAR should realise that the aero of the current cars are making for terrible racing.
Jude Cole-Start The Car
I agree. I was at this race but don't remember this one. I was towards turn one and probably missed it. Buckshot Jones talk about a never was in Winston Cup!
1:58:10 Why does the guys face have "Shit i lost $65,000 of that at Vegas last week" written all over it?? ;)
The ones in charge now don’t have a clue about putting on a show like that now days
Stewart should have won this race. That last stop cost him
1:00:43
OMG, great racing, but Ken squire needs to recheck some facts. Earnhardt won in 93, not Irvan. Earnhardt was famous for overcoming black flags and penalties to win.
