- 1999 was the first year post-Jeff Gordon dominance. In his place, several drivers stepped up, including Bobby Labonte, Jeff Burton, and the rookie sensation Tony Stewart. Jarrett only had five finishes outside the Top 10 all year, and only two outside the Top 20.
The year Jeff Gordon finally had trouble. 7 DNFs to go with his 7 wins. If you put Gordon in the position he was running in the races he DNF'ed, he would have beat Jarrett by over 100 points. Give credit to Jarrett, he didn't give the competition any chance to catch him.

I'd put it as a weird bad season for Jeff Gordon. He had such a dominant 1998 season, but the 1999 season he had, 7 wins, 18 top 5's and 21 top 10's is not that bad, but I guess after 1998 any season after that wasn't going to match the sheer dominance, 6th in the standings, over 600 points behind Dale Jarrett was the result
This brings back so many memories. I miss seeing these drivers and cars on the track. Extra special seeing my favorite Jarrett win his only championship.

99 was one of the years that outside maybe 2 races, (nemechek and andretti), race wins were pretty much confined to the expected drivers: Gordon, Martin, Jarrett, Burton, the Labontes, Dale, Rusty, Tony I guess would be the big surprise.
