- Today is the official launch day for the second-generation HomePod that was introduced in January, and we picked one up to compare it to the original HomePod that Apple discontinued in 2021.
Design wise, the second-generation HomePod looks a lot like the first-generation model, featuring the same rounded design and acoustic mesh fabric. It's ever so slightly shorter, and the main external change is the swap to a new edge-to-edge touch display.

I am SO triggered at the way you pull those pull tabs starting from the "opposite" side LOL
My bad guys. It was a confusing box and I was in a rush lol
My goodness I thought the exact same for everything he unboxed 😂😂😂
You’re pulling it wrong. 😂
First time commenters on here on UA-cam/anyforum and I did not make it thru the first 2 minutes as i I needed to come here to stay -I’m also triggered.
Pulling the wrong end of every pull tab was driving me nuts!
Just got mine in midnight color. Loving it so far. The sound fills the room so well. I’m using it for my living room to vibe to high fidelity music
Mine arrived on Friday. I placed it across the room from the gen1 HomePod. Launched Apple Music on iMac and connected both for output. Using the volume sliders, I was able to compare them together and with one on, one off and vice versa. I always felt the gen 1 had incredible sound. I was convinced of that once I bought the HomePod Mini. However, with the two HomePods across from each other. The new HomePod won hands down. It has a crisp full sound in the midtones and highends. The bass has strong depth. In some songs, there isn't much difference. But then other songs with a lot of instruments playing you can really hear the difference. Now if I could only sell my Gen1 on eBay for $650 like they were bringing on eBay BEFORE the new one arrived.
Picked up 2 for a stereo pair connected to Apple TV 4K.
I had [3] of the originals and I did pair a set of them together for my Apple TV immersion. It "did" work somewhat, had many issues, had to update Firmware multiple times, then had to completely remove them from my whole account and start over from scratch and repair everything to get them to work again. That was my series 1 version. As someone else mentioned 5 years between updates, and "not much" of a major difference, a few more features and speed based on OS Improvements... normally, I'd buy a new pair, but for now... I am going to also "pass" on the upgrade. I gave away a pair of my old series 1's, and have one lone HomePod beside to all me what time it is in the middle of the night, and then, "Hey Siri, what's the weather like." and that's it... glorified weather station / clock. LOL
I stopped by the Apple Store on launch day and got the only two Midnight Black they had in stock. I paired them and they sound quite good. I would agree with the review that I do not see a noticeable difference from the first generation. I do intend on replacing all minis that are in larger spaces in my home. The minis work great in smaller areas but the updated big daddy knocks it out of the park in large spaces.
I would be curious to see how would this compare to the Sonos speakers (same size)
I can’t believe the new Home Pod ships with Wi-Fi 4 connectivity which is legacy tech from 9 years back!
Wait what?? When did they announce these were coming back? This is the first I’m hearing about it! Why did they even disco them in the first place? Did they have parts they needed to use up?
I like your back ground music it doesn’t interfere with your video.
Just ordered a stereo pair for our kitchen, replacing an iPod Hi-Fi with a Belkin Airplay 2 adapter attached :) We already got a pair of minis for our TV. I’m going to compare and see if we should upgrade those as well.
Hey how’s your experience with pair of minis for the tv? I’m uncertain whether to buy one HomePod or two minis.
@@crnisrb I think they are fine as an alternative to small speakers. We used a pair of Audioengine A2 before. I think the sound of voices are a bit more clear in the HomePod mini's. We have a 20 sq m living room area, so pretty small compared to others. I would also say that we do not watch a lot of movies. Mainly news and reality shows :)
If you pair the two HomePods with Apple TV, doesn’t that mean it’s just using AirPlay to send the sound to the speakers ? When I use AirPlay it’s super buggy and cuts out all the time. Does anyone else encounter reliability issues with AirPlay ?
I hope I misunderstood you. Did you say the new HomePod does not work with the minis? I thought together the overall sound would be even better, especially with Dolby Atmos.
They do not stereo pair with anything other than new HomePods. Minis only stereo pair with themselves etc
Whoa whoa whoa you playing Charmer to sample? Ten points for you sir
What if you were to mount this on a pole in the middle of a room upsidedown so it's filling the entire room
I want to get 2 new HomePods to pair with my Apple TV.
So @Dan I have heard some guys say that the BASS of the 2nd generation Homepod is slightly, ever so slightly Less than the OG Homepod. Did you also think so and felt so while your entire testing and listening of the Second Generation Homepod ?
Maybe a little? But I actually think that it sounds less muddy. HomePod can over do it sometimes. This has a good balance
How’s the spatial audio?
Did you stereo pair them, how did they sound?
👌👌
Only Apple can do this. Bring something to market as a version 2 and change almost nothing 😂 they make great products but they sell also so much BS
Every pull tab you did wrong. Was it delibrate?
It actually was not. Talking to the camera and unboxing at the same time just leads you to be an animal with the pull tabs I guess 😂
I miss the GIF jar in the background.
It’ll come back. Everything is changing soon anyways 👀
@@macrumors Where did you get that anyway? First, I applaud you for the correct pronunciation of that. Second, was it custom made, cuz I wouldn't mind one of those. :)
Gonna hang onto my stereo set of OG HomePods for now. Have them connected to my Apple TV and they still work great. If these new ones go on sale for a good deal then I may upgrade but I don’t see much of a point right now.
Where did you get that bamboo shelf it is sitting on? Great look!
It’s from Fully! The colbe shelf.
The speed of lights is like our Mini’s… they seem to take forever and there’s always something that doesn’t respond. It’s frustrating. This seems much faster!
Same here…
Can you use one HomePod with an Apple TV?
Yes
Works it without cable?
You said that they removed a woofer? Really?
No. A pair of tweeters.
The removable power cable should have had an option for plugging it on the underside honestly...
I was looking for more bass then the previous gen.
Home pod port isn’t usb c.
How much better is the sound vs the mini?
It’s a pretty significant difference
Bro dyslexic af with the pull tabs!
Can 2 HomePod 2 replace a Dolby ATMOS soundbar ?
Not likely
I compared them against LG Dolby Atmos soundbar and they do sound amazing, but can not replace the soundbar. Having a separate subwoofer wins!
Will stick with my HomePod mini pair setup as they sound great for my small apartment larger HomePod just overkill for a small apartment with joining walls made of cardboard here in the UK. My AirPod max are also fine if I wanna crank up the volume without upsetting my neighbours.
No aux no deal
Apple gives, and takes.
My Bose and google speakers sound great at 1/5 of the price 😊
ur saying u paid 70 for a bose speaker, nones gonna believe u
Dude the original Homepod was 5 years ago and your review is like "Great news", "impressive", seriously? A 5 year update cycle that has little to no improvement on the main function of the homepod this is terrible at best.
“You can’t stereo pair a HomePod mini” what? Yes u can
You can’t stereo pair THIS with a HomePod mini. Obviously. You can do two HomePod minis.
Not wireless :(
I hate that they didn’t make it wireless.
old verses new.
it wouldn’t make any sense to attempt pairing a mini with the much larger HomePod. Obviously 🙄 that would create an awful imbalance in the sound. You’re posing a problem where there isn’t one.
Thanks for censoring the "Hey Siri"
It should be on a wireless charging base, so you can take it with you for a few hours play… where ever…. Apples “creativity” is so base and boring these days. Latest software update, the worst on record for my HomePods. So consistently AWFUL on the software updates. HomePod activates on walking past… I dont believe that’s at “feature”. Siri is now hard of hearing… i have to shout…and siri constantly errors with Apple Music not responding… so many other errors…I reset them all every update… still errors. Beyond poor. What testing do they do before releasing. Woeful.
I turned off after 2 min sound so bored for good sake where is the passion
You’re a horrible person. Go away and be miserable by yourself. Dan is the best.
shoulda just kept your mouth shut in the podcast where you were so skeptical not being able to believe the sound quality would be the same even when other much more popular and abled reviewers like Dave2d and MKBiasHD said the sound quality was great, the same. yadayada
new screen is looking so nice!
The sound being similar to the original is a major drawback for me. Obviously it’s hard to tell from your video but it still seems to have the same boosted highs and lows with a big dip in the midrange. There are plenty of better sounding, Bluetooth enabled, bookshelf speakers on the market for a fraction of the price.
How about dolby atmos or spatial effect?
@@seekingthetruth7047 ‘being capable of’ and ‘excelling at’ are not the same things. When it comes to sound equipment, there’s no cheating the physics. HomePods don’t have mid range drivers and no amount of clever software tuning is a replacement for that.
No interest in the iPod's
I cringed. What kind of unboxing is this?? Why not pull the tabs how you are suppose too!!
BTW, I still watched the whole video and liked.
Haha thank you and sorry for the poor unboxing 😂
Things from Apple I will never buy: Apple TV and Homepod
