I know this is a very old review, but I was always on the fence with this game, whether I would buy it or not. I always loved the Far Cry series and 4/5 are amazing. But, after watching this review, I went straight and got it. Thanks my man, I appreciate all the info :D
4 is the blandness game of the entire series. The only thing going for it is that its a polished well looking game that runs smoothly. Its story is sooo fckin dumb i like paigen tho js like vass hes a badass killer

Fun fact, its not entirely made up languages. They hired scholars that primarily study ancient linguistics and recreated a potential language based on common root words of the region from existing cultures. There was a behind the scenes interview about it. It was really cool. The system was based on 100 known words from Sumerians. They then worked with and coached the voice actors on the perceived pronunciation of said words.
Only if they had this much dedication for the gameplay itself.
I'm still waiting for Far Cry: Blood Dragon 2.

At-least Ubisoft are now changing things up even if its little. And they really should change the stealth system, make it more like Dishonored, stealth is the number one way I play this series.

As for GGGman I think he was really lenient on the game. It really doesn't do enough to justify a $60 price tag considering how much was taken out and how little was added in.

Gggmanlives Such as? For me the underdeveloped melee combat weakened so much about the game. Yeah the spears and arrows have good impact but that's the bare minimum. How about some enemy damage effects along the lines of Dying light? There's little to no visual feedback for damaging an enemy apart from a blood effect.. The beast master is "new" in that you can ride a sabertooth but really you could already ride elephants and to get the same effect in Far cry 4 you just had to throw bait in an enemy base and watch the wildlife attack. Plus the taming itself is so... weak.
IMO, the only original thing it has going is the setting and attention to dialect. Other than that they took out a lot and added in nothing apart from a very vague Clan system that really loses me. Considering the whole idea is to build the Wenja Tribe in Oros it's such a weird flaw to almost always be attacking enemies on your own with no group of hunters like how you see at the start of the game.
I don't know, me personally I just expected a lot more and was hoping for a shift in the series the way Far cry 3 did in a lot of ways. But they did the bare minimum for just about everything bar the setting.
Sorry for the essay, just don't like making a statement without backing it up.

This game is Far Cry 3: Prehistory, it came after Far Cry 3: Himalayas
Not really my kind of game, but I will say that taming then riding a saber-toothed tiger sounds pretty bad ass.
I agree that this is a ubisoft genre type of game, but at least in primal it makes sense. Trailing missions is basically now animal tracking. Taking over bases actually gives you more resources because you have more villagers. The eagle vision/hunger vision also makes sense because "shaman magic'. And car missions are now done with mammoths.
I enjoyed pretty much all Far Cry games. Yes, they got kinda repetitive but Primal changed quite a lot of things or at least gave some stuff a new look. I really enjoyed the shit out of it this year. Was definitely in my top games this year and I cant think of too many... The collectors edition was even better, having access to everything and getting translation books, etc. Really cool enjoying the game like that.
However, I guess some people get kind of tired of this Far Cry or Ubisoft formula. I dont mind it too much but its definitely noticeable that all FC games have similarities, especially 3, 4, Blood Dragon and even Primal but oh well. I still would say that Far Cry 2 is my favorite. Yeah, shitstorm me. I dunno but FC2 had such a special african feeling to it. Yes the driving and checkpoint thing sometimes ruins the game but beside of that its really cool and on higher difficulties like a surivial simulator. I sometimes missed some more civilians and wildlife though. Primal had too much wildlife. Really. Unrealistic much.
I've been saying since it came out that it is underrated as fuck. It looks and plays beautifully, there's tonnes to do and it's set in the fucking stone age. Wish more people appreciated it; though I agree there can be too much wildlife sometimes.
I completely agree with you about FC2 as well, my second fav after Primal. It had a lot of flaws yeah, but the setting and core mechanics were awesome. I think Far Cry games are probably best left alone by people who don't love the formula. Guess we do!

This was the first Far Cry I ever completed, so I honestly enjoyed it for what it was. That and there's not nearly enough caveman sims, so I'll take what I can get in that regard.

First Ubi game that has somewhat interested me in years. Too bad it's only the art style and setting that looks interesting. Need interesting game play to go along with that.

Bought this for 22 quid. Loving it so far. My favourite feature is the ability to slide down a cliff without taking damage. You can even stop mid-slide!

Is it true that the map is identical to the one from Far Cry 4? As in, the topography hasn't changed for 12 thousand years?

That is where you are wrong and right where the area is the same as they are most likely in the same location but some errosion has occured yes its small but remember some parts of the earth through out time will depending on what is affecting it such as humans, so its not really lazy design, saying its lazy design is sort of like saying that you play a game that takes place in the bronze age then the sequel that is in the middle age with gunpowder and you are in the same area just with massive differences, remember this is the ice age compare to far cry 4 which I guess somewhere around 2010 I can merely guess as it seems disconnected

My verdict:Do you want more Far Cry? Buy it.Are you sick of doing the same grindy shit all over again? Don't buy it.
I'm one of those idiots who NEVER fast travels (because why create an open world if you just are going to skip around in it?) but this game broke me. After about 30-40 hours I just started using it ad nauseum to complete the game and move on. The other Far Crys are fine after that many hours because I enjoying driving around in a car but riding a tiger isn't anywhere near as fun.

I know it's supposed to be in the pre-historic era, but aesthetically it looks really similar to The Revenant movie, which is definitely a good thing.
This is a very, very good game, but terribly short, i was able to get all collect ibles, side quests, achievements etc on hardcore game mode in 40 hours. Now i have nothing left to do.
Awesome review man. To truly complete the series though, would you be able to review Far Cry Instincts and Instincts Predator? I'm not sure if many ppl remember those ones!

I rented Primal and Platinum the game and I had to say I did had allot of fun, killed what could have been a boring weekend. Can't say how I would of feel if I actually bought the game though.
Anyway, you know what I think would be a unique setting for the next Far Cry game or any open-world game? The desert lands of Manchuria of China, around the 1930s. If you saw the movie THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD you know what I'm talking about.

This game looks so repetitive, familair and boring and the amount of upgrades makes it feel like padding to the extreme. I'm sure You could waste alot of time in it, all Ubisoft games are like that but I want some new experiences not just glorified re-skins. Thanks for your review
If its repetitive why bother playing a Far Cry game. I don't understand people wanting massive changes to the formula. Hell, its a game not a movie.
Made up language for immersion, but modern HUD elements and menu map rather than using FC2s ingame map idea. Would've of been the perfect FC game to return the FC2 style map.

And now we wait for Far Cry : Victorian, Far Cry : Eastern-European, Far Cry : Medieval, Far Cry : Ice Age, and Far Cry : Underwater.

I like how Far cry primal looks but the few things I do not like is that you can not change the looks of your weapons whenever you want (the club level 2's look is shite) and the fast transitions between day, dusk, night and dawn, but I know why that is done is that during the night special plants come out however its still strange, also the absent of rain also the taming of animals makes it helpful for getting around, plus you are able to pet them, best feature

best game in Far cry series even in 2023 in my opinion
I loved this game because of its rather faithful recreation of the stone age as a whole, granted some things here and their aren't perfect with the representation, but considering its far cry, which usually meshes a bunch of ecosystems together anyway, this is still pretty damn faithful, the people who worked on this did their research.
But keep in mind i'm not a paleontologist, archaeologist, or anthropologist, i just know a lot of facts and just happen to be a huge prehistoric geek, take that for what you will
they should make a western farcry
Red Dead Redemption....however I would prefer a Far Cry Western for the sake that it is in First Person. And I like to shoot guns in First Person.

I skipped this because when I was playing 4 I got pretty bored for a bit due to it being so similar to 3. Still enjoyed it but just too similar for me

Ubisoft is it's own genre is the definitive statement of the year. I mean The Crew, The Division, Rainbow Six Siege and Assassin's Creed Unity are all basically the same fucking game with tweaked core mechanics. It's all just, "forming a team and go find shit."

If the game has better combat I'd consider it on sale. However, both 3 and 4 grew stale on me fairly quickly. I wouldn't want to burn out on yet another Ubisoft style game quite yet.

yea enemy Binocular Xray vision has always been a really bad issue in sandbox games them knowing presisely where you are at all times once alerted GTA games suffered from this the most that and teliporting police.

The language isn't made up, it's the closest approximation of reconstructed Proto-Indo-European that the studio could get by linguists.
For me that's a big fat Plus for effort.

While there is another game where you can ride around on a sabre-toothed cat and use a slingshot (Ark Survival Evolved), it's way too much of a bother to level up once every hour of real play time to have a chance of doing so, only to go through a tedious taming process. Added, it's still an unfinished survival game. This game looks quite a lot more fun.

This is honestly such an underrated game. Best Far Cry in my opinion.
Just started and am enjoying immensely ! WOW, dont understand why everyone needs to have constant PEW PEW in their FpS. This was a bold risk for them. Thx UBISOFT, was pretty let down with having to play an annoying hipster-bro in FC3, and the story in FC4 really aggrivated me, FC4 was redemption imo.

Why is no one mentioning the fact that this game is significantly shorter than the last two farcry games. This was clearly at one point going to be stand alone DLC that they beefed up just a bit to sell at full retail value.

Apparently, the language from the game was researched and they found out it might have been used by Humans before the English Language or any existed.

It's sad that Bethesda games have a better stealth mechanic than Far Cry. At least in Skyrim or Fallout, enemies will wander around looking for you instead of magically knowing where you are.
