I'm going to buy a handheld for a Christmas/Birthday for myself. I'm on a budget. This is one that is one my list to consider. I also like the Trimui smart pro. Still not sure it's got to have Wi-Fi. I want PS2 but it is not necessary. I got a PSP had for more than 10 years and still working great I had replaced the screen 2 times ( my fault)and M19 I got from Ali express a few months ago. M19 is not bad for the $35. I'm willing to spend $200. Hopefully less. If any has any ideas reply
So the RP3+ has just dropped to $135 because the RP4 is coming. Personally I’d all my handhelds the RP3+ is the one I played the most this year. It’s a perfect PSP machine. The RP4 and RP4 Pro will be $150 and $200, the base model will feature a faster processor than the 3 as well as Hall sensor sticks, and analogue triggers. So Dreamcast, PS2 and GameCube will be a much better experience but it won’t do all GC/PS2 perfectly (maybe 70% of the games). The RP4 will have a significantly better processor and more RAM so in terms of future proofing it’s the one I would get but right at the top end of your budget. Either way months after posting this video I still love the device and PS2 has many game that really work well. I have played a ton of Silent Hill 2 on it recently.
100%, arguably even more since this video. I discovered GameCube and PS2 can be made very playable (See my follow up GC video, bit of shameless promotion there). They also released an update that increased performance and fixed some minor issues. So this is probably my most played system still!!
@@thegamelounge659 Amen to that because my RP3+ Metal and 16bit RP Flip variant are winging there way to my home as I type. My last Retroid product was a RP2 so I'm looking forward to the performance bump lad.
Thank you for the video! 1 question I would like to ask is, what would you recommend, A modded PS Vita? or the Pocket 3+? Also, I just subscribed to you!
Thanks, this video has created so much discussion which was the whole point in making it. So every sun helps. Personally I would get this. Vita’s are getting harder to find but they are fantastic devices.. there isn’t much in it!
Awesome, what do you think of the device overall though. Can you get past the issues you have and enjoy the additional powers over the MM+. Or is it a deal breaker for you?
Of course they’ll fudge something up with the 4 and then you will want to wait for the 4+. And then the 5 will be even better. Maybe you should wait for the Retroid Pocket 9 Pro Plus with 7G and holographic projection.
These devices are like phones. If you wanna wait for a better version than what's out right now, you may spend forever waiting. I'd say if it plays what you want, nab it, and then consider upgrading when something worth jumping to arrives.
Love this video, and you've got me pretty sold on this device. It's worth noting though if you just plug a PlayStation into a modern TV, you are NOT seeing it how it looked back in the 90s. Modern HDTV's do not understand how to handle a '240p' signal and it will look way more jacked than it did on a CRT. Not even talking about scanlines and dithering etc, just straight up signal miscommunication between these devices. I think this point was more about the enhancements like perspective correction, but none-the-less it's not how it looked back then if you just plug one in.
Thank you, yes I am totally with you. I 100% agree which is why I have been looking for a handheld for some time which can handle some of the post-processing. To me this one absolutely does it
in my experience i feel like i get better performance on ps2 then game cube the problem with game cube is the stupid custome setting u can only change a few sttings in game while the ps2 emulator u can change millions and billions of seetting while the games on making way more games playable for me just download the pal game and use vulkan 99% ps2 smooth after that
I’m going to need to try and tweak things this side. PS2 is generally harder to emulate so when things were crawling for me I just assumed it wasn’t worth the effort. Maybe I need to try harder 😂
I agree. For example I could not get Beyond Good & Evil running well enough on Gamecube, but was able to get it to a playable state on PS2. Changing the "Hardware Download Mode" setting alone is like a magic switch on some games.
@@MrMo0nlight That's seriously the only example i know where the ps2 version runs better. It's usually the opposite, you just need to configure your default dolphin settings so that they cover 90% of games. Look up the spread sheet.
Interesting, MvsSF for me was a little slow. Got ~50fps. Castlevania ran perfectly for me so not sure what issue is. Are you running latest Yaba Sanshiro?

No warranty. No quality .Costs in Uk the same price as Nintendo switch. Can’t replace the battery or switches without taking the whole thing apart. In the long run it’s just a waste of money
So you make an interesting point about the long run. Time will tell but I can see why people are nervous. For now I’m still playing it more than I play my Switch.
I’ve had one since launch, as well as an RP3 I picked up afterwards as part of their sale. I… don’t like them. The buttons don’t feel right, Android emulation feels like using a phone instead of a console, and it’s not particularly ergonomic. The Anbernic RG353M is amazing IMO. It’s smaller and less powerful, but it feels better, has a better OS, and the controls are much nicer quality. I also have a Miyoo Mini and a Steam Deck. Both are great, but the Steam Deck’s controls feel better for modern games than retro or the fighting game genre.
Interesting that you prefer the Anbernjc. They make fantastic devices with great build quality but I always feel they are underpowered. I may pick up their next device.
@@thegamelounge659 if they could make a device that has the value of the RP3+ with the emulation frontend that Anbernic devices use then it would be the perfect device for me.
@@thegamelounge659 really depends on what games you want to play. I don’t love the early generations of 3D (except Dreamcast). The nicer controls, UI, and build quality are things I wouldn’t want to give up.

I tried dipping my toe in the handheld market a couple of years ago with a (very) cheap no brand PSP shaped thing that came with games installed - hated it, as it felt so cheap and nasty, and sent it back. Looking again now and this is the 3rd Pocket3+ review I've seen but the only one from "a couple of months in". Very very useful and your enthusiasm has swayed me. I was looking at the Odin but at least the Pocket3+ is readily available. Thanks for this. Sub'ed.
Thanks for this comment! This is exactly why I made the video. I too have had all sorts of devices. With the one I personally played the most being the original GPD XD but none have made the cut. This I haven’t stopped playing!
I think my only complaint is the D-Pad. The D-Pad is fantastic for most games, but when it comes to fighting games, especially ones where you need to perform moves quickly like Marvel vs Capcom 2, this D-Pad just isn't optimal. I find that I drop shoryuken motions and half circle motions on this D-Pad. If there is one thing I want from their next release, it's would be a better D-Pad that is great for classic retro and fighting games.
Love my clear purple. Disagree on GC and PS2 and find 70% very playable at .80 native on GC and 1X on PS2. The small screen makes them look great IMO at that res.
Yeah I am honestly tempted to pick up another. GC works, don’t get me wrong I’m not saying it’s awful. Just saying I wouldn’t buy one of these for GC and PS2, it’s a nice bonus. But 3 of my favourite GC games just didn’t work. F-Zero, Twilight Princess and Resident Evil 4. I haven’t played around with the settings tjough
@The Game Lounge Agreed not the best if those are your target systems. I have other devices and got this for 32bit on down. Was surprised that the T618 does as well as is does.
i think his take on it is more correct. while ps2/gc games are able to run on it, i definitely wouldn't recommend this for anyone specifically trying to run those systems. many games struggle, and the ones that do run usually take some tweaking. even my pixel 3 with a snapdragon 845 has trouble running the demanding ones. for the rp3+, i still consider ps2/gc emulation as an extra perk, since it can play many of the easier games well.
Just NO. PS2 and GameCube are not meant and do not run well on this system. There are too many that don't work at an acceptable level. This fashion of saying percentages (70% 80% or 30%) is pure ignorance.
You could have done the size comparisons a bit better. Actually lining them up, holding them still. Maybe multiple devices at once next to each other. Side view for thickness.
So I don’t own the Flip, however, internally it is the same as the RP3+. So it comes down to personal preference with the clam shell design. For me, the biggest differentiator is the analog sticks. With the Flip not having proper sticks it’s makes certain PSX, DC, PS2, GC, etc. then it isn’t the best.
we shouldn't be too far off since the windows/linux handhelds are now reaching lower prices too. i'm thinking my rp3+ will be my last android handheld since the new handhelds by ayn and aya are looking really good. but yeah, $200 for flawless ps2/gc emulation is kinda the sweet spot
@@justinfoster1040 Yeah but it needs some tinkering by lowering the native quality of some games. By the end of 2023 I think they will come with an arm SOC capable to run those systems at native resolutions at least.
I just ordered one of these and I didn’t realize that it didn’t come with the games preloaded on it and I only have an Apple computer. Am I still able to download games?
Yes someone else commented on this. Obviously I can’t comment about how you source your game but the OS you use makes no difference. You can just load up the SD card with your games…
Well this would be a nice device, if the select and Start Buttons would have be positioned better. For me that is the biggest flaw (plus that it is 250 usd where I live)
Agree here although I don’t find it a massive issue. 259 USD however is pushing it. You can get a switch for that. Then again I am currently playing this more than my Switch…
@@thegamelounge659 yeah, I play my RG353P more than my switch too. Maybe the button layout is an issue for me is because the way I am used to play my games.
Six months after this video, are you still feeling the RP3+ love?
100%, arguably even more since this video. I discovered GameCube and PS2 can be made very playable (See my follow up GC video, bit of shameless promotion there). They also released an update that increased performance and fixed some minor issues. So this is probably my most played system still!!
@@thegamelounge659 Amen to that because my RP3+ Metal and 16bit RP Flip variant are winging there way to my home as I type. My last Retroid product was a RP2 so I'm looking forward to the performance bump lad.
Awesome, let me know your thoughts when you get it
Thank you for the video!
@@thegamelounge659 Ok, I will go with the Pocket 3+ instead, Thank you!
CAN IT USE 1TB MICRO SD CARD. THANKS
Interesting, I’m using a 256GB card. I did plan one day to use a 512gb. So this is good to know
My first android hand held, coming from miyoo mini plus. I dont like the clicky dpad and stiff buttons. I guess I got used to the MM+.
Awesome, what do you think of the device overall though. Can you get past the issues you have and enjoy the additional powers over the MM+. Or is it a deal breaker for you?
I'm confused between this and abxysolute one handheld. Which one would you choose for retro games specifically.
I'm buying 3+ based on this video.
Great stuff, hope you enjoy
@thegamelounge659 I went with retro, not clear purple and I think I'm okay with it lolll
Yeah, I’m actually a little bored of the Purple now. Tempted to pick up a black one.
Do you think I should wait for RP 4+? Might be even better ☺️😉
The speed these things come out it probably wouldn’t be a long wait
@@thegamelounge659 that's what I'm counting on. Maybe 6 months or less 😂
I'd say if it plays what you want, nab it, and then consider upgrading when something worth jumping to arrives.
does it also have the option to emulate scanlines?
Yes, the backend is Retroarch and the system is powerful enough to add most shaders. So you can get the look you like
I agree with you on PS2 and GameCube.
Got to say I tried Dolphin MMJR with TechDweeb’s recommended settings as someone suggested and GameCube is a lot closer. Many games are close
To me this one absolutely does it
in my experience i feel like i get better performance on ps2 then game cube
the problem with game cube is the stupid custome setting u can only change a few sttings in game while the ps2 emulator u can change millions and billions of seetting while the games on making way more games playable for me
just download the pal game and use vulkan 99% ps2 smooth after that
I’m going to need to try and tweak things this side.
Saturn for me didn’t work as well. Marvel vs street fighter and castlevania sotn is the only games I want to play but just not quite there yet.
Interesting, MvsSF for me was a little slow. Got ~50fps. Castlevania ran perfectly for me so not sure what issue is. Are you running latest Yaba Sanshiro?
@@thegamelounge659 thank you for the reply. Yeah mine is all up to date. Sotn has audio issues and sometimes frame rate drops for me for some reason. May I ask how do you have your settings as in yabasanshiro pro?
This is good to know.
I'm getting a device like this to play Dreamcast and prior.
If there are games that won't run well, then I'm not really interested in getting one.
Are you Ioannis? You sounds like him 😛ho-ho-ho
Hey, no not Ioannis. Sounds like a great guy though 😉
12:33 what's that game
Metropolis Street Racer for SEGA Dreamcast! One of the best games on the system
what was the amazing feature?
The main ones is the fact this is the first affordable portable Saturn. There are a few things I go through in the video
Bro please take time and learn to use AetherSX2, people saying games don’t work is NOT fair 2/3rds work !! Pal only usually without underclocks even, you need to configure properly!! (Stock AetherSX2 that comes with is better, auto update off)
Yes I have since tested a lot more games and many work great. Games like MGS2, Virtua Fighter 4, Ratchet & Clank, Need For Speed: Underground all sadly didn’t for me when I tried it. I made a video about the GC and was I too hasty. Perhaps I should do the same for PS2
I hate playing Sega Genesis games on a 4 face button controller.
I don’t really mind the Genesis. The 3 buttons map quite nicely. It’s the Saturn that I find frustrating mapping the X,Y,Z
Only problem I have is Android doesn't have a single decent frontend like Linux devices do with Emulation Station.
@@Flyingboots1 RG 505 has the same SOC from the RP3+ at the same price range.
Too small for me
See I love the size. Fits nicely in a pocket without being too intrusive & cheap enough that if it gets beaten up it isn’t a disaster
@@thegamelounge659 If the screen was like 2" bigger it would be perfect. It might fit in my pocket but its too small for my hands. Cheaper* $150 is not cheap
I just want something to play N64, Dreamcast, and Saturn really well.
It was this or the AYN Odin Lite. Think I’ll save $50 and get the RP3+
Sub'ed.
We are in a golden age my friend ps2 and Xbox emulations are 80% there on android handhelds once that’s done there is nowhere to go after that
Thanks for this comment!
Yes I’m not a massive fighting fan. But the few 2D fighters I have tried I have to admit I have found some moves tough to pull off
Love my clear purple.
@locked01 More ignorant to make that reply. Have you tested? I have and the percentage holds. Math and testing are hard.
You could have done the size comparisons a bit better. Actually lining them up, holding them still. Maybe multiple devices at once next to each other. Side view for thickness.
Hey Brinta, yes, to be honest the whole setup was very DIY to get the footage. Need a decent teipod
Any thoughts on the flip version ?
So I don’t own the Flip, however, internally it is the same as the RP3+. So it comes down to personal preference with the clam shell design. For me, the biggest differentiator is the analog sticks. With the Flip not having proper sticks it’s makes certain PSX, DC, PS2, GC, etc. then it isn’t the best.
Thank you for the video partner
Any time!
Once Gamecube/Wii were able to run in a device at $200, that will be the time to get one of those.
we shouldn't be too far off since the windows/linux handhelds are now reaching lower prices too. i'm thinking my rp3+ will be my last android handheld since the new handhelds by ayn and aya are looking really good. but yeah, $200 for flawless ps2/gc emulation is kinda the sweet spot
I mean the rp3+ definitely plays a good majority of gc and a lot of Wii. There’s a compatibility sheet linked on the Retroid subreddit
@@justinfoster1040 Yeah but it needs some tinkering by lowering the native quality of some games.
By the end of 2023 I think they will come with an arm SOC capable to run those systems at native resolutions at least.
@@SergipeCycling In pretty much everything I play I'm running at least 1x native resolution and many things 1.5 to 2x
@@SergipeCycling wrong. The rp3+ is playing most gamecube at 1.5x. Look the sheet up
awesome review mate, you have yourself another subscriber. Ordered the same colour and case yesterday and looking forward to receiving it
Thanks so much. Glad you like it. Have a little mini follow up based on some of the comments coming next week actually
@@thegamelounge659 awesome thanks
Well this would be a nice device, if the select and Start Buttons would have be positioned better. For me that is the biggest flaw (plus that it is 250 usd where I live)
Agree here although I don’t find it a massive issue. 259 USD however is pushing it. You can get a switch for that. Then again I am currently playing this more than my Switch…
@@thegamelounge659 yeah, I play my RG353P more than my switch too. Maybe the button layout is an issue for me is because the way I am used to play my games. Everyone is different and I am happy for the choices we have now. I play alot of games I never finished when I was a child and I am so happy that my father gave me his game collection from Amiga, DOS, PS1, SNES etc. It is so nice to have a device like this to relive parts of your childhood.
Can you play PS2 games on it?
So actually yes, far more play than I thought. GTA, Silent Hill 2, Outrun and many more worked great for me.
Can't the Odin Lite do Saturn? Or are there driver issues or something? It WAS 160 at some point (now 200)
It does but like you say cost seems to keep rising.with shipping and taxes especially. (If outside the US of course)
My Saturn experience has sucked. I can't get much of anything to run. Do you have a Saturn set up video? I was so looking forward to playing all 3 shining Force games on this!
Ahh that’s a shame. I actually tried my rip of SF3 (the PAL version) and it didn’t boot. Did Google it and some have said that different dumps do work. Everything else has been great for me so far
@@thegamelounge659 I found a program that takes my disks and converts them to CHD files. I now have all 3 Shinning Force games working. Marvel vs Street Fighter is still a no go. That one also gives me trouble on a Satinator. Which is a bummer as it's my fav Saturn game.
Does this come with all games shown on the video?
Sadly no, it doesn’t come with any games. You have to load and configure the games yourself
Do you have an email address I could email you at with some questions? Thanks
Feel free to DM me on Twitter @TheGameLounge5
Sorry. Don't use Twitter. Wondering if I could purchase this device with the games set up? Thanks
@@larrymarshall1681 Your questions indicate you don't quite understand the copyright/legal issues with that. As you were told already, it doesn't come with the games.
If you are trying to show off the device I suggest next time peeling off the plastic on the screen since it affects the fidelity of the screen. Clearly it was left on since it’s bubbling up on the lower right corner.
It’s actually a badly installed screen protector. Need to rip off and get another
What song is that playing on the intro? sounds badass
It’s a snip from a track from MSR on the Dreamcast
