Episode Notes:
1. Saturn footage is always captured on real hardware.
2. This episode was massive. Even bigger before the edit. Categories that did not make the final cut.
BEST PLATFORMER - MEGA MAN X4/DRACULA X
BEST 3D CONTROL PAD SUPPORT - BURNING RANGERS/NIGHTS
BEST PARTY GAME - STREET RACER/SATURN BOMBERMAN
BEST ARCADE PORT - ELEVATOR ACTION RETURNS/OUTRUN
3. I plan to do this with all the game systems I own.
4. Magic Knight Rayearth was in my original Saturn Awards episode as the best RPG. After splitting the RPG/STRATEGY/ADVENTURE categories up and adding Grandia and Vandal Hearts, I had to slide it down the list a tad. I still think it's a great game.
5. I cut the platformer category from the rotation because I just don't think the Saturn was strong enough or well-stocked enough to cover it. In the awards episode, I named Dracula X(Symphony of the Night) as the winner. That should say just about everything.
6. In the Assault Suit Leynos Segment I said there's no slowdown. This is not entirely true. It does chug a bit when the monster ships are on screen. This was actually in the script and why I showed the boss encounter in that category. I edited the section a little aggressively.
Thanks for all the amazing videos over the last year bro, you're doing a better job keeping the love for Sega alive than Sega is.
I appreciate that! Thank you.
100%
Though he,nor I,nor you have ever created games. With that said,it's definately a much different company today. All the greats are gone,as with many companies. But,I will always repeat that Sega are bums. They're good for nothing.honestly. they've been pushing the genesis for the past 20 years.collection after collection of piece mealin followed by many more years of atgames and finally the most current collection and mini console(which are good) but it's like enough with the genesis.its over. They devalued the thing so much that even Nintendo, with their crappy online "retro games disguised as a service" service, even they won't drop a trailer for Genesis, with the games coming out in weeks,or a week,or days.no,they know the hype is so low that they're just available immediately.and yes they're great games(time never takes that away) but it's time for Sega to move on,which they won't.so I say just shut it down. They're not keeping anything good alive. They have a great back library that they've built nothing on.theyre not with the times, and they're not stuck in the times.theyre just wherever.and it sad,cuz as I always say, theres no reason Sega isn't on par with Nintendo's software. even Xbox, who has been around 22 years, manages to still be relevant with zero of their own unique, groundbreaking, staple, exclusive, must play games that they themselves created. Could you imagine Nintendo during the GameCube or Wii era, and their only property that they created was like yoshi? It's pitiful.and Sega could be killing right now.but they're not.cuz they can't.cuz they're stinking bums! Theyre bums! (Coach Mickey from rocky voice) bums!
Absolutely.
For sho!
100% agree!!
The quality of these videos is beyond anything involving video games. It is simply brilliant
Thanks for watching and commenting.
SLX and Game Sack.....quality, technical expertise, passion.....ALL DAY!!!
Man, i'm from Brazil. Back in those days i bought my Saturn at the very launch. By the time i was studying in USA. Then when i just back to my homeland Sega's Saturn came with me... Saturn was absurd expensive in Brazil, then my friends came every weekend to my house, just to play the fighting "Arcade looking" games. They gave it a name: "Arcade dream machine". Those was the best days of my entire gaming life. Your list has show me how Sega's Saturn have much more than fighting games. Thanks, bro!
Your channel has been nothing short of a godsend for somebody born after the days of Sega's hardware business who wants to get into these retro consoles today. The Saturn looks simply amazing sometimes, especially with sprite based games and there seems to be some real hidden gems on the console :D
And what a great video to end the year with too, thanks Sega Lord X!
Happy holidays!
Oh you sweet summer child....try living in the day. Being a Saturn owner was essentially being a disappointed bastard. Lol
@@big_ry82
Sega as a whole really dropped the ball.
But Sega of America ruined the Saturn completely. Sure after the fact it's amazing thanks to things like fan translations and access to the games that were crazy hard to get back then like Japanese exclusives.
I was a Sony guy and I regret nothing.
Playing saturn now is better than it ever was then.
@Ryan Whitelaw I'm 42 and never played Saturn but love my dreamcast just found one with box for 60$ now looking for games
@@42calking53 you can buy a ram expander/"action replay" from aliexpress for about 50 dollars that lets you play burned discs.
Your channel has been so useful to me. I’ve embarked on a multi year journey to fill in the gaps of gaming left behind while my family was so poor. You have encouraged me to think my lot in life is much much better than it was when I was young. Now that I have access to the whole library for this and other consoles, you’ve helped me zero in so much on what excites me most.
I still think Nights has to be up there as probably my favourite game for the longest overall period of time. It's not everyone's cup of tea, I know, but I've lost a lot of my life to that one, and I still do!
Yeah it didn't make his list....to me it's the best shoot em up/best graphics
Should've been on for best music and consideration for best graphics as well
Nights should be best overall game, although I agree with no 1 and the runner up.
Pander Dragoon and the sequel Zwei are the best games for the console. Playing the first one in 95 with that soundtrack and gameplay and the graphics, it was just mind blowing at the time.
The Saturn was something special, I was the only one in my entire school who owned a Saturn and I never regretted having one back then.
Same, everyone had a ps1 and saturn owners where considered a joke but we had the last laugh as the saturn is highly collectable and now considered a gem in the retro gaming world
did you ask everyone if they had one?
I’m probably the only guy at my school who has a saturn as well, but it’s entirely possible someone has at least emulated a game or two for the saturn. I might go asking around about it lol
I was a latecomer to the Playstation. At the time, I loved my Neo-Geo AES and Sega Saturn the most. Even today, I still own a Neo-Geo and Sega Saturn because in my opinion, they are the best consoles ever made. I eventually bought a Playstation and I loved it just as much. I also cherished my Sega Dreamcast. I remember how magical it felt to own one, with some of the best games releasing for it. Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, MVC2, etc. I bought a PS2 on launch, but it took years before I loved owning it.
I bought my Sega Saturn in 1997 (Poland) because of the Sega Rally. To this day I have Sega Rally, Panzer Dragon II, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop 2, Daytona USA, Tomb Raider, Wipeot 2097, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and many more. Saturn is by far my most beloved console.
Love You channel.
You truly are the Lord of Sega.
X.
Guardian Heroes was also dope because playing the story mode over and over would unlock TONS of extra selectable characters for the game's awesome 6-player Vs. mode.
And some of the seemingly underpowered grunts from the campaign proved to be surprisingly competitive/valid choices to play in Versus.
Treasure's amazingly precise 2D controls and collision made the whole combat system feel glorious.
I remember a few people wrote in to Sega Saturn Magazine complaining about the high score they awarded Guardian Heroes, saying they hated the mad amounts of enemies on screen etc, and that it had 'no replay value'. One person also seemed dubious about whether it was actually by Treasure because there was no logo or reference on the box.
I remember feeling rather annoyed at the time. I know it's not to everyone's taste, but personally I still play it loads to this day, and still haven't unlocked all of the hidden characters. For me, it definitely has the feel of a Treasure title, especially with the various magic abilities each character uses. Awesome game!
My friend and I used to spend hours playing in the arena to level up our characters to max power. I didn't even like playing as Nicole but once she was strong enough her stupid shield magic just became insta-kill to all enemies in the corner.
Nice audio transition at 33:19. Panzer Dragoon 2 also has an anamorphic widescreen mode!
Hello Joe, thanks for your role in stoking my gaming interest the last few years...nice to see you support a fellow Sega guy
The two games I can think of supporting anamorphic wide-screen from that period (on the Saturn at least) are Panzer Dragoon 2 and Nights. Any other come to mind?
@@PicksterTG High Velocity also has a widescreen mode. Also Virtua Fighter for the 32X. The Saturn was not powerful enough for a widescreen mode in its Virtua Fighter games, only the 32X could handle such radical-ness.
@@GameSack Its obvious. The 32X has the X factor!
...
I'll get my coat
Thanks Joe!!!!
id argue guardian heroes is one of the best beat em ups of all time. Its so deep, the graphics are great, the music is great, I dont know how much better a beat em up can get beyond it.
Your videos are so comfy to watch.
I'm at a point in my life where I'm completely lost and in utter despair about how I'm going to keep going. After many idiotic decisions during my teenage years and early adulthood, I'm stuck inside my head hating all those choices.
But some UA-cam channels still make me feel nice, make me forget the bad times, the bad choices, the things I did... And this is one of them. You actively make me seek out retro games, something I've always been interested in, and your coverage of them and your passion are truly inspiring.
I've been a SEGA fan since I was a kid, the Mega Drive was the only viable option to a poor Brazilian kid even in the 2000s after all, but this channel keeps my love alive.
I've never even seen a Saturn before, but I'm in love with its library thanks to emulation.
Anyway, thanks for being awesome SLX.
Regret can be a debilitating emotion. It can rob you of happiness and the ability to find it. I know first hand what a struggle it can be. The fight is real but you can beat it back by waking up every day and giving your old self the middle finger and putting positivity out in the world. The pain you caused in the past can't be undone, but there are always people needing your help today.
@@SegaLordX thank you for the wise words SLX!
I'm always willing to do my best now. In a way it feels like I'm putting good things back into this world.
Incredible video. I remember when I got my saturn when it came out. I was in middle school. Every time i play it, it takes me back to the good times when i was a kid. Favorite system of all time. Will always have a special place in my heart.
Never played a Saturn in my life but would genuinely pick up a Saturn Mini if Sega ever does one
Sega lord X videos are extremely entertaining. I just love the enthusiasm he exudes, I enjoyed video games a lot as a kid and was a kid in the sega Saturn era, I never had the privilege of ever playing a sega Saturn. So seeing these vids are close enough.
I really appreciate the comment. Thank you.
Sega Saturn was my first 32 but. The nostalgia is real, I teared up on panzer dragoon, especially the beautiful music.
That panzer dragoon score is incredible. I remember being 5 years old playing that for the first time, that first level is so mesmerizing, with the flooded ruins and the soaring orchestra.
Yes!! I was getting to the end and thinking, man Dragon Force deserves to win something. It's probably my favorite gaming memory of the Saturn--probablt the entire generation. A buddy of mine watched me play a little bit of the game. He wasn't really into games, but went out and bought a Saturn just to play it. I still play through it every couple years. Great video!
For me my favorite memory of that generation is my dad bringing home a Saturn with Panzer Dragoon and playing that for the first time when I was 5. The first level with the flooded ruins and the soaring orchestral score was just mind blowing and changed what I thought video games could be.
I miss the Saturn so bad. I got it Christmas 95. It was by far my favorite system growing up. It was just so fun to play. I’m currently bidding on a Saturn and a Dreamcast on EBay. Wish I never got rid of either system. Great video by the way.
I have many fond memories of the Saturn Era. Virtue Fighter, Fighting Vipers, Virtue Cop, Bug, Panzer Dragoon, and many others. One of the best is the many hours my siblings and I played Worms. When any of us had sleep-overs, it was our goto game to play. Our parents even joined in once in a while.
Worms was such a good game back then
Lets face it - it was mostly shit. There were some classics that suited the console, but not many. As a 2D "genesis in beast mode" console - it was amazing. But this was during the Golden Era of the PC - where the gaming PC made every other system look like complete trash, no matter what. I remember my friends brother bought a saturn to replace his Jaguar, and he was talking about the incredible 3D graphics of panzer dragoon, just as he did when he used to talk about aliens vs predator. But then his brother and I would be linking up our PC's via serial cable and playing Quake deathmatch, or Big Red Racing, or Command & Conquer - and within two months, that Jaguar AND Saturn were sold, and replaced with a gaming PC. The kicker was Sega Rally - which did play great on his Saturn - but he saw us playing Screamer 2 and that was the last straw.
Consoles were still great for a hanful of console games, but it was around the time of the Saturn and Playstation that consoles started to try to mimick the PC experience, especially in 3D titles, and failed miserably. FPS gaming on a controller? No thanks. Awful FPS and graphics too, in comparison to a Pentium PC with a VooDoo card. The consoles still held up in their own genre but the PC was light years ahead, generations ahead, in everything else. The Dreamcast was possibly an exception, it had good hardware, clever developers and innovative ideas - yet it failed commerically? I was never sure why.
Since then, consoles basically became low end PC's that you can't upgrade, and that ask for $60 game with poor performance. The Wii is amazing. Know why? It KNOWS it's a console! XD
@@TheVanillatech Consoles still always had the better games. I have heard all this talk by these older pc guys shitting on the low res textures of jumping flash 2 on the playstation etc. They came across as low key jealous, to this day even. I know I loved my metal gear solid. tomb raider and resi1. I never cared for any of the pc games a was shown at that time but I was a little kid after all but that feeling just has not changed. What's the point of the tech when the media is just not there.
@@E1N101 If consoles always had the better games, why are many of the console mainstays today PC FRANCHISES with their original titles and genres birthed on the PC?
I mean, you can try to answer that if you want, but we already know the answer, don't we? And it proves I'm right, doesn't it?
Are you aware that when the PS2 came out, the PC gaming machines were 3x faster and with double the resolution and fidelity and 2-3x the framerate? I mean, you can try to answer that but, it's not an opinion, it's a fact. So, it's kinda rhetorical. It wasn't even a contest, and it never has been. The two most powerful consoles of their time were the Dreamcast and the Xbox X, both of which were totally eclipsed on the day of launch by the gaming PC.
It's fine to love Metal Gear, Sonic, Streets of Rage, Road Rash, Resident Evil etc. But that doesn't make them "better" than PC games, does it? It just makes you nostalgic for them. And Tomb Raider was developed FOR and ON the PC. The PC version has infinitely better visuals, sound, performance, playability, immersion and GUI. It was cross ported during development to the Playstation, and heavily downgraded to suit. Not sure why you'd bring that game up, it's not a console game originally.
As for jealousy, as a general rule, people are envious of something superior to what they have, not of something vastly inferior. If someone wanted a console exclusive fighting game say, Soul Calibur, but they owned a PC - they would simply buy a console too and have both. And if a console owner wanted a version of GTA that wasn't running at 20-30fps with low resolution graphics and details as was the PS4 version, they would simply buy a PC also to enjoy a much better version. After all, GTA is a PC franchise, ported to the consoles.
Have a good one!
I pretty much agree with your list other then Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition needs to be in there. I know you don't like how it chg control wise from the arcade version but I loved it. I had both versions and I had no trouble adapting to the new version. This game , Virtua fighter 2 and virtual cop 2 are love songs to Sega arcade and reflect what sega should have focused more on with the Saturn and dremcast. Their fantastic library of arcade games. All I wanted back then was to bring the arcade back into my home and considering most of us couldb't afford a neogeo the Saturn was THE system that came closest to getting us there.
Hell yeah dragon force. The entire reason I own a Saturn. There’s never been another game like it
It's still among my favorite games ever.
@@SegaLordX agreed. I just got the Satiator for my Saturn and got the English version of dragon force 2 that I can’t wait to play
Thanks again for the great videos about the SEGA Saturn. Last year I started to play Saturn games for the first time in my life, and the more I play the more I love this console now. As a kid I only experienced Playstation 1 and N64 and always dreamed about the Saturn. Here in Germany this console flew totally under the radar, and it could have been a success with a better marketing strategy.
Saturn was an amazing console. I personally owned Sega Rally, Command and Conquer, Nights into Dreams, Exhumed, and Worldwide Soccer 97.
Always the best Sega content! Thank you!
Glad you like them!
@@SegaLordX I know you usually keep it retro, but will you review Sonic Frontiers?
I agree on everything, although Nights into Dreams should have received a win in a special category, it was so magical: graphics, soundtrack, gameplay, designs, innovation (introducing the 3d controller, the Christmas Nights experiment...)
I agree. But it seems Sega Lord X didn’t personally like it at all other than from a technical perspective. It seems a lot of Sonic fans from the Genesis days kind of resent Nights having taken up Sonic’s slot on the Saturn, and so judge it against Sonic 2.
How'd I miss this one?! Oh, one hour old.
*Grabs popcorn*
And pizza!
The thing I love about your channel is whenever I need to find new games to play on my Saturn you never let me down
The Sega Saturn is my favorite console that I never owned. High school friend of mine had it and several games (mostly RPG/Adventure games including Guardian Heroes and Dragon Force, of course, and House of the Dead). I regret not getting one of my own while they were still relevant, but after the Sega Genesis/Sega CD and SNES, I went with the N64 (because of Ocarina of Time - I've been a Zelda fan since the beginning - and Goldeneye) and the PS1 (the first Resident Evil's release is what sold that console, but the great library of RPGs kept me around).
I just finished my Saturn console collection. I received Skeleton Derby clear / black console complete in box. I now have all versions of Saturn released.
When I saw Vandal Hearts here I got goosebumps. It has always been one of my favorites and I'm so glad to see it get it's due.
Such an amazing game just wish they didn’t cheap out on the sequel
@@willjenkins4195 I'll admit the sequel wasn't nearly as good. But I liked it for what it was. I definitely wish it had been a true sequel and they had just opened up the class system more instead of changing combat completely.
And yet another banger Sega Lord I’ve been with this channel for the past 4 years and you never skipped a beat throughout 2022
Vandal Hearts has been one of my favorite games since I first played it. It was amazing on the play station I will have to try the Saturn version one of these days. I still play though it every few years and have multiple songs from it on regular rotation in my play list. Truly one of the best games made, wish they put the care into it’s sequel
Great job my fellow Dragon Force stan! 😂😂😂 i still play it to this day and I'm thinking about making the commitment to acquiring Dragon Force 2 because I'm sure it will be worth it! Ur videos always bring me back to my childhood. Thank you brother and I wish u all the success! 🤟🏾🤟🏾
Thought you'd take the easy virtua fighter 3d fighter win, but you impressed me by awarding Fighters Megamix. Well done.
God bless you Sega Lord X - and I will see you again!
A great video, but for me personally leaving out Radiant Silvergun is impossible. Easily my favorite shmup and I would consider it for best game on the Saturn as well.
Yeah, I understand not everyone is going to see their favorite game in this video and people have different tastes… but Radiant Silvergun is an absolute masterpiece. I feel like it deserved at least a mention at the end along with Saga. Great video though!
Putting Segata Sanshiro on the thumb nail was all this video needed. “Japan’s Chuck Norris” love it
You are the reason I bought a modded Saturn this Christmas 😁
Dragon Force is outstanding.
Enjoy your new Saturn ! At least I have a decent computer that can emulate the Saturn pretty well so I can enjoy some of these titles.
@@Gatorade69 thank you and happy holidays
Was worried for a moment we wouldn't see Dragon Force here, glad I gave it a chance after hearing your praise for it on this channel. Took a little bit to wrap my head around but once I did it was one of the most unique experiences I've had in gaming lately. Great stuff all throughout here, thanks for the upload. Gonna have to get around to Vandal Hearts here soon, burnt a copy of the English patch a bit ago but still working on a few other titles.
If Sega did a Saturn compilation for modern consoles like they have done for the Mega Drive numerous times, i would buy that (if they would include a lot of great games outside the usual suspects).
I was a Nintendo kid growing up then switched to Sony with the PSX. I never owned a Sega console, and your channel has been an unbelievable resource in helping me find great games for their consoles. Thanks for making these videos!
Soooo glad you chose Power Slave for the FPS category. It was my immediate thought when you got to FPS I love that game so much!
Duke Nukem ain't bad either.
@@macuser7048 agreed. Honestly Quake was really good too
You guys have to play Hellslave on the Saturn
I buy a crt last week and I texted the thing with Panzer 2 of course… It felt like the first time I play it . Nostalgia bliss
Having been born in the 21st century and never getting to experience things like the Saturn your channel has been one of my favorite UA-cam experiences and I don’t think I’d be as in love with classic sega without your content, hoping to pick up a Saturn this year for myself and I’ll definitely be using your content as reference, thanks!
I got the console as a kid as my first console I owned myself but I had been playing my brothers genesis and NES before that. It definitely is one of my favorite consoles and really in the end one of the most under appreciated consoles that was ever made in my opinion
The Saturn hits me different from any other Sega console. It's truly a gem to own. I made some purchases for it today.
Very good vid 👍
Panzer Dragoon Saga is my #2 Saturn game of all-time, only behind Shining Force III. I play all 3 scenarios annually. It will always also be my favorite console
You're the sole reason I finally decided to dive into Saturn emulation several years ago. No one I knew owned one, and I was team Playstation ever since Tekken 3 came out.
I'm still glad I chose the Playstation, but I wish I would've had a Saturn too.
BTW, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Holidays, etc...
There is only one game that you missed "Nights into Dreams".
A Sega Saturn best of video, without even a mention of Nights. Some residual dissatisfaction over no Sonics platformer on the Saturn, perhaps?
dark savior, mystaria, tomb raider, resident evil, and shining the holy ark are all heavily underrated on the SS
Nice and happy holidays
Thank you. Same to you.
My Favorite Sega Saturn Game Is DragonForce. It was & is the biggest reason why I have my Sega Saturn today along with Sonic Jam
It was such an incredible game. I can still sit and play it non stop.
@@SegaLordX same here man I never get tired of playing DragonForce
I would like to wish a merry Christmas to all, especially those in the Sega Saturn mod community. 🎄🎅🦌
55 year old german gamer and subscriber to your channel reporting in. I enjoy a lot of your high quality content (especially the SEGA stuff). Decades ago in Germany
I owned the SEGA Mega Drive that I modded to be able to play NTSC games in addition to the standard PAL games as well. I remember meeting with a Japanese gamer every now and then to trade games (that is how I got "Hellfire" back in the day) and just chat about that stuff.
I also have vivid memories about playing Daytona USA in a local Arcade and will never forget how impressed I was by the graphics, the sound and the incredible force feedback that racer provided. This experience was leaps and bounds ahead of anything else I had seen at that time.
Once I learned about the Saturn and a freaking home version of Daytona USA, I knew I had to buy that system on launch day, which I did.
I also bought the wheel for Daytona USA and drove the heck out of that game! Yeah...the graphics were a little rough, but that did not bother me a bit.
I also got Panzer Dragoon and watched the opening cinematic more often then I should have........Virtua Fighter 1 and 2 , SEGA Rally, Decathlon......what a great system to own!!!
Who knows what SEGA could have achieved if SEGA Japan had listened more to what their american division had to say...
Anyway....again thank you for all your awesome content and keep it up....because "Sega Lord X does what others don't!!!!!"

Thanks for another stellar year Sega Lord X for all best of the best, console retrospectives, reviews and all other awesome content you put out over the year.
I've been playing nights into dreams and it makes me want a Saturn.
That Nights didn’t appear anywhere in this video is utterly baffling.
Imagine all these games in a Saturn mini! [With also Burning rangers, mr. Bones and clockwork knight]
I remember I first discovered the Sega Saturn ironically shortly after I got the Sega Dreamcast in 2000. I was looking online one day at Sega stuff and saw the Saturn and some of its games and was absolutely shocked that I had never even heard of it! I mean, I know I must have seen it at stores as a kid but none of my friends had one and I just never paid attention to it until that point. I researched it non-stop for months and figured out which games I wanted first and tracked a console down at a retro video game store in my state (which I ended up working at a couple years later). Fortunately, due to my heavy research and some luck in asking around, I was able to track down some great titles for absolute steal prices like new copies of Burning Rangers, Dragon Force, Shining Force 3, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Guardian Heroes, and Saturn Bomberman for around $20-30 each and other less rare games for even less money! Unfortunately, I never got Panzer Dragoon Saga as even back then it was like $100 online - a price that's a steal today but I didn't have too much money back then and couldn't justify spending that much on a single game. But I ended up with a solid Saturn library and really enjoyed it as a very unique offering. The Dreamcast is still my all-time favorite console but the Saturn is perhaps the most special console in my opinion. And I mostly agree with your best of the best list here!
If you don't want to spend ridiculous prices on certain Saturn games like Panzer Dragoon Saga, I'd recommend modding your console. I did so with mine a couple of months ago, and it's awesome. Easily the cheapest way to play games on the original hardware!
@@Nightopian1982 Yeah, I haven't played my Saturn for a couple of years now. I've tried emulators but they still aren't perfect. I saw that SD card ROM cart which I so wish I had back in the day but it's a bit pricey. I might still buy it though just to play PDS on the actual console. I'm also having a weird issue where the console has to "warm up" for a bit before the picture and sound are correct, LOL. Cheers!
Another excellent vid. Hey I just bought a brand new NiGHTS controller from 1996 for $130. :)
The Best Exclusive Games, for me, are Nights into Dreams and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei. My God, they were awesome. Graphics, sound, fun, replay. I just love those games so much, even today. Great list!
I didn't grow up with the Saturn due to it being unpopular and before my time but your videos have made me extremely interested and I"m currently chipping away at its library and having a blast so far, thanks for such informative videos!
Another fun and informative video SLX, every time I watch one of your Saturn compilations I find myself spending the next few evenings playing the awesome games you just reminded me of... So many games, only so much time! 😄👍🎮
Still hoping for a Saturn mini. My pre order would be straight in, no questions :)

I'm so glad you gave Puzzle Fighter some attention. I was 5 years old when I would watch my older half brother and cousin play this game competitively and will never forget loving the game's music and sound effects.
Your closing remarks couoled with that music brought a tear to my eye. I miss sega consoles. Sadly, i only have a megadrive, would love a Saturn.
Virtual Hydlide, Mr Bones. Clockwork Knight, Shinobi, Virtua fighter kids, Shining Wisdom, my favourite console by far, great childhood memories.
Props for the shout-out to Powerslave!!!!♥️♥️♥️
I picked up the PS1 version not long after its release, and omg what a gem. Gorgeous visuals/lighting effects, magnificent gameplay, killer soundtrack, and definitely a challenge.
For me, Powerslave and Disruptor were neck and neck, only behind the OG daddy DOOM👌🏻
Great vid🙏🏻
I had mostly all of these. When I was deployed in the Army, I got a divorce and my exwife sold my entire collection (1985-2010) for $100. It still devastates me. I collect mostly Switch and other handheld stuff these days. I'll never get back the stuff I lost. I wish I could say "that's fine, it's just stuff" but...nah. There were just too many memories tied to that collection.
I have a family now and kids. I really hope we can build some memories with gaming.
Thanks for the recommendations!
Any time!

Runner Up: Policenauts
Winner: Sakura Taisen
One of the best SEGA channels on UA-cam, your videos this year have been fantastic!
First game that always comes to mind when I think of the Sega Saturn let alone most favored game. .. Street Fighter Zero 3 without a doubt ! Capcom and Sega did a really good job with the Saturn version
Thank you so much for calling out Puzzle Fighter. I played the heck out of that game on my PSX and also when they did the re-release on XBLA back in 2007. I so wish for a modern update on it as the core formula is so much fun.
I was a teenager when the Saturn came out. It launched at $399 while the original Playstation was $299, my parents went with the cheaper option for a Christmas gift for me. I am glad they went with the ps1 because it was awesome but a part of me still wishes I would have saved up allowance and done odd jobs around the neighborhood so I could have had both because Sega will always be near and dear to me.
I love waking up from one of the weirdest fever dreams I've had in a while only to be greeted with new SLX content!
As a kid I grew up on Sega Genesis then PlayStation One and N64. I’m actually really amazed by how awesome these games on the Saturn look. So many titles I’ve never heard of before. Would love to get my hands on a Sega Saturn but the market is so damn expensive. Some of these games are going for $500 lol.
Amazing video btw idk why but it was really relaxing to watch lol.
Great video, you just forgot to award Sonic 3D Blast the "Most Pointless Port" award.
I'm surprised you didn't even mention Nights. That game should be in the "best of" list of any Saturn fan.
I'm a pretty big Saturn fan and it's a very good game. Not best of material for me, however.
@@SegaLordX BOO!
Fantastic video! The only changes I would've made would be in the RPG category, and drop Mystaria, bump Vandal Hearts down to Runner Up and crown Panzer Saga as the winner.
I'd maybe find a way to include Burning Rangers, too...
What about Best 2D/3D Platformer? I was actually hoping that category would be featured on here as well...
I see Saturn..I click. Still watching but loving this list so far! I loved everything about the Saturn and I really loved the music that was produced in that era. Just hearing these osts just make you want to play
Have to comment again - super good vid here, loved every minute of it. So glad to see Dark Savior and Assault Suit Leynos 2 get the nod. Princess Crown would have been in there somewhere for me. Great picks, great commentary, great history lesson all in one. The Saturn has been my favorite console since it's release as well and I still play the hell outta mine today. Have one set up on a 36" Trinitron and another on my HD TV with a Retrotink 5x. Such a fantastic console, fantastic time in gaming, and a 2D beast.
Keep'em comin, Mel!!
The Sega Saturn is an interesting take that involves both sucsess and failure at the very same time. WHile it had great sucsess in native Japan, it major lost to the N64 and Ps1 in Europe, North America and Australia. To summon things up with its demise:
1. The Sega 32X was a product that should have never been made. That products short life span was just an "inbetween" product before the launch of the Saturn.
Most people understood from day 1 that and this hurt Sega's brand and faith in the Saturn outwards in the Weastern market.
2. The Saturn was rushed to the western market. Before any solid software was avaible to support the system, that made gamers uncertain if the system was worth investing in. And as Sega did so, it became BOMB at retailers and fans opinions.
3. The Saturn was underpowered from the gecko and not properly built for handeling 3D gaming. The Saturn is a great 2D and 2.5D gaming system, and with handeling many of Sega's own arcade titles - BUT it was not from the ground-up built for handeling 3D graphics. That was because despite Sega America had early on leveled for the Saturn to have more horsepowers, Sega of Japan (HQ) did not take there notes seriously and believed there system was all fine as it was. However at late stage they realized there American part was right and deviced a new late-stage plan to implement 3D graphics power. But making the system having 2 processors that was going to work togheter made the system a struggle and nightmare for developing software with. And worse was that the implemented extra powers was still not on a level that could rival the PS1 or the upcoming N64's software so the implements landed in the classic saying "To little, to late". And also the lack of proper RAM built-in further made things a buzz.
4. The Sega Saturn have no interesting and exlusive software. While it had some great arcade ports both from Sega themselves and other arcade developers, they still needed a wider game library and games that would screem SATURN to the consumers. Sega stood with-out that and not even there mascot and bread winner Sonic the Hedgehog had no new game on the system made it look thin and uninspiring. There was some 3rd party titles that sold well on other systems, but they looked and played worse on the saturn due to the difficulty of porting software for it and weaker 3D engine to run them. Saturn became in Japan known as an RPG & arcade machine that became 2nd best seller after the PS1, but in the west it was nothing. It had no exclusive titles that appealed to the market and with a weaker hardware made things next to impossible to attract developers and publishers to work with them - despite the strong relationships Sega had with the Mega Drive/Genesis system. EA Games pulled the plugg early on and the rest followed one-.by-one. Where was a new Sonic the Hedgehog title? Where was a new Altered Beast? Where was a new Golden Axe? Where was a new Streets of Rage? Where was a new Run-out? Where was a new After Burner? Where was a new Comix Zone? Sega did not use any of there solid library titles....
5. Announcing an early "death" in the western market made people drop Sega all-in-all. When Bernie Stollar announced that the Saturn was not the future, that was the very last strwa that broke the camel's back for the system - something that would have effects with its sucsessor the Sega Dreamcast life
I was looking to spoil myself this holiday, thanks for giving me some solid options for my slim Saturn collection.
Keep the Saturn videos coming! I'm having a good time collecting and playing the Saturn this year. There's just something so special about this system that it's only just getting the credit it deserves. I cannot believe I ever sold my original Saturn (and all the systems I owned). But it's aged quite well.
Honestly, amazing video. You really know what you are talking about. I have never ever played a sega saturn but all the games in this video look really good!
Die Hard Arcade was Dynamite Cop with the Die Hard property added on in the west.
Guardian Heroes indeed was just to good. Even unlocking ALL the enemies as playable in vs. Making it a fantastic quest like Pokémon to beat them all to use them all.
GH is the beat em up I stack all other against for comparisons, and nearly nothing beats it to this day.
M'lord, I know it might be a tough task, but how about an ep like this for the 3DO? A criminally underrated console that deserves some love.
M’lord?? 😂😂😂
Agreed! The 3DO had a lot of duds but some of its games were practically flawless.
@@volvoguy804 Super Street Fighter II: Turbo for the 3DO (with the Capcom Soldier gamepads) is the go-to version my friends and I play when we're hanging in the man-cave and want to get some Street Fighter action going.
Sega saturn was the best console i ever owned. So nostalgic watching your videos
I love seeing those "best of the best" videos, it shows me that I have a virtually infinite amount of good games to play that I still have to ☺️ keep up the good work!
Awesome video man. From a guy in Australia who desperately wants to buy a Saturn in the future, I think you have covered everything I needed to know in this one single episode alone. Great work, Sega Lord X!!😎👍👍
Thank you for the content man, I started over to collect Sega stuff after selling my huge collection back in 2012. You've been guiding me trough the road this last summer and I feel like I can relate to you to discover and purchase the right game and invest my money on the right software. Thank you keep up the good works! 🎉
Your pronunciation of English is so perfect and nice to hear that I used your videos to practise and of course I take note of new Saturn games to play in console.
You can work on TV with that voice.
Thanks for another great video brother, I can watch your channel for hours
