I remember that deep dive comparison video between the RG350M, RG351P and the Retroid Pocket 2. I remember it did indeed help me to decide to pick one of them (I ended up leaning more torwards to the RG351P). At that time this channel had barely 15k subs. It's impressive how far you achieved! And the quality of the videos have not only kept the same standard as it has been getting better and better.

It helped me choose a 350m (for screen and HDMI out, though that latter feature is not great, even with the Adam Image...caused an endless rebooting loop last time I tried, maybe resolved with new versions of the Adam Image)...though quite a bit after its release, in fact JUST before the 351mp came out! Felt a bit dumb, but then once I applied the Adam Image I was incredibly happy with my 350m. RP2+ made sense to enable N64, Dreamcast and PSP...BUT, with the latter (and Streets of Rage 4) a bit too small, letter boxed...thus now with an rp3+ 👍👍👍...well, hopefully it will be a while now before I need "just one more" 🤞😁🤞

      @skycloud4802 Рік тому +6

I've still got the RG350. It's looking a little tired these days, even with the Adams Image to freshen it up. The SD card being mounted within the casing is a pain to keep updating emulators and the OS. I've rounded off some of my screws in the process of doing this lots of times, so I'm hunting for a new device that is more feature rich and easier to update (and Skraper friendly).
I'm also waiting for that magic PS2 level of emulation. As it was my favourite system, and I really want to play that on the go in pocketable form factor. It won't be long before I upgrade I think, and the Retroid Pocket 3+ is getting very close to what I'm looking for. Within a couple of generations, I will bite.

Thank you for making my final decision in buying these 2 devices. I was really on the fence bc of the oled on the RG but I think what won out for me in watching this comparison is the form factor. I have the RG351m and I like it a lot but I wish I had gotten the plastic one instead bc that thing be heavy after a long gaming session. Also the RP3+ has a more ergonomic shell so I feel like it would be more comfortable to use over long sessions than the squared off RG505. I can deal with the ips over the oled. Plus I wont have to deal with screen burn in over time either so win win. Just ordered the clear purple. Love that color! Thank you for the info and I look forward to more retro gaming content in the future. Or just any techy stuff is fine.😁

There's also a couple things to mention:
      - Retroid has better software support. Not great but good, and much better than the likes of Anbernic, GPD, and PowKiddy. Not as good as say Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, or even Oppo.
      - RP3+ is barely pocketable, but the Anbernic RG 505 is even larger, and actually in a different/lesser category. Unless you have very loose clothing expect for this to be a not very portable device (backpack or purse mandatory).
      - Both handhelds have poor performance when it comes to PS2, 3DS, GameCube, and Wii. They'll play about the lower 50% of games fine, so treat it as a bonus. You need to step up to something like the Kirin 980, MediaTek Dimensity 820, QSD 778 (or better) to get those systems looking good and running fluidly.
      - Both handhelds cannot really do Windows XP, PS Vita or NSwitch emulation. For that you need a Kirin 9000, QSD 870, or D1100 (or better).
      - Both handhelds have poor ergonomics when it comes to 3D Games, since the Joysticks are below the D-Pad / Action Buttons.
      - Both handhelds have poor sound as they are not front-firing stereo loudspeakers.
      - Both handhelds have poor battery life since neither has a User Removable Battery.
      - Last point, both companies can make a great device but they're not focusing on consumer experience. They're bound by the cheap parts they can source, and making iterative updates (which are sometimes downgrades). If they wanted to make a great device, they would design it like my concept*.

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko Рік тому +1

      A better handheld !!
Just start with the Anbernic RG 505.
Make it smaller 180mm x 80mm x 15mm and lighter 200 grams. It comes in a Matte Plastic with the retro FunTastic Colour Options. Now it is definitely pocketable for everyday gaming on the go.
Go with Anbernic's inline Shoulder Pads (it's more sleek) and don't use Stacked Shoulder Buttons. Put the Anbernic rubber grips on the back to rest your last three fingers on prevent scratches. Put the Joysticks towards the top of the face. These are larger capped, recessed sticks, with Magnetic Hall to prevent stick drift. Ergonomically it is better now for 3D Gaming, which is the target with this product but pocketable. Anything else and it is dead, because you may as well get a larger 8.5 inch, Actively Cooled, x86 gaming device, that runs Windows Games.
Continuing with ergonomics, underneath the Left Joystick put the Action Buttons. Underneath the Right Joystick put the Anbernic D-Pad. But between them are Front-firing stereo loudspeakers AND also the Start/Select buttons. All the buttons are using Rubber-Membrane connection for that old-school feel and fit for 2D Games. As you may notice these buttons are wrong way around/upside down. That's because you need to flip the device 180' to enjoy it, which now puts the Action Buttons and D-Pad in the correct positions, and they're located at the top of the faceplate. This means better ergonomics for 2D Gaming and 3D Gaming, you just need to choose. On the "top side" of the device between the inline shoulder pads are buttons for Back, Home, Function, and Power. On the "left side" and "right side" there is nothing. On the "bottom side" there is a Headphone Jack, USB 3.1 TypeC, microHDMI Out port.
The device has a proper accelerometer and gyro, which senses when you've flipped it. You can automate it, lock it, or make the flip manually. The software is mostly Stock AndroidOS version 12, with a few creature comforts. They make a commitment for 4-years of updates. The bootloader is unlocked and developers are highly encouraged for Custom ROMs and Linux Distros.
They can ensure such longevity by using a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and a modern one at that. The top pick here is 128GB UFS 3.0, 8GB RAM, and the QSD 870 SoC which was a competent flagship in 2021 but it will be a competitive midrange in 2024. It has a double-vapour cooling chamber so that it has great sustained performance, less heating, and no complexity from Active Cooling. At least for the budget we are targeting which is USD $200 + Shipping. Other key features is the 4.7inch display. This may sound small but it's pretty large for this device that's very pocketable. It has minimal bezels and uses an IPS screen to prevent pixel burn-in. It has above 720p resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio, as this makes Modern Apps and Games more enjoyable, and it makes Game Streaming much more feesible.
Now to power all of this is a 4000mAh battery. Which is pretty average by today's standards and it should ensure gaming time anywhere between 4hrs to 7hrs to 12hrs battery life. The difference comes from the max intensity (eg Wii x4 resolution), to average intensity (eg PS1 x2 resolution) and low intensity (eg GBA x1 resolution). To solve range anxiety and greatly increase battery life, this is actually a User Removable Battery. Sure it loses chance for IP68 protection, but regular splash protection is enough for this device which benefits much more with this smart design choice. The backplate is removable which also leads to the microSD slot, and modular components when they need replacing.
A future 2024 version can also be considered, with this jumping up to a USD $700 price. That gets you a SIM card, full phone functionality, and a rotating camera like ZenFone 7 Pro. As well as an upgrade to the QC 8g3, 16GB RAM, and 256GB UFS 3.3 storage. This version should stay relevant like a Console for between 5-8 years due to how advanced it is and it will age like Fine Wine. Another "Pro" version can be released alongside it for USD $900. It has a larger 5.7inch display, almost the same design, but the Controller aspects are Removable like a JoyCon or JungleCat. And if (or when) these become a massive success, they can become a Mainstream Device with a yearly upgrade cadence, if the market votes for it.

My 3 kids and I watched your rg505 and RP3+ reviews last week. They all decided on the RP3+. They thought the 505's triggers would be too hard for them to reach and they scoffed at any complaint about the RP3+'s start and select buttons being on top. They liked that the RP3+ came in colors they wanted, so no one would be stuck with a color they didn't really like just to have one that's different than their siblings'. Since the rg505 didn't have the play store at the time of your review, the RP3+ having it was a big point in its' favor but I still like RP's interface better. Having 4 devices to set up, I think RP's switch-like emulation front-end is perfectly usable.
I was an early subscriber of your channel and you consistently show why with every video you do.
My kids all want to know, how does the 3DS Animal Crossing play on these devices? They're ok with turning off the sound and don't mind minor slowdowns.

I had used Roms on my pc in the past but never knew the concept was now entirely in handhelds and needless to say Russ has got me obsessed with this concept now. After trying out multiple devices, I went with the controller/iPhone route because it just made sense to have 2 devices in 1 that featured a top of the line processor that I’ll always be upgrading each year the newest iPhone comes out. Long plane rides are now that much more tolerable while blasting aliens in Metroid. Thanks Russ!

I like the D pad button better for my case/use. I also prefer the Oled screen even though it has a lower resolution I prefer the vibrancy/color tone of Oled screens.
Also being an Oled screen it's more efficient in terms of power consumption/battery life, especially when it comes to gaming for long periods of time. Testing both when it comes to heat/battery life the RG505 fairs a little better, the lower resolution helps alongside it being an Oled screen.
Both are great there's not much in it & I would recommend both but personally for me I prefer the RG505, I can't put my finger on why exactly.

@@skinni_the_P00hBear Hey there, I received my RP3+! So far I'm really impressed with it. Everything up through Dreamcast is fantastic, and even more exciting is the surprising amount of games you can run under Switch and PS2 at full speed.
I'm currently working my way through Final Fantasy X on PS2 and Scott Pilgrim vs The World The Game on Switch (Skyline).
If I had anything that irks me, there's only one standout thing, and it's the audio latency, especially in 2D titles.
In games like Mega Man and Metroid, whenever you shoot you can detect a fairly significant pause between the time the action happens on screen and the sound (both over the speakers and wired headphones), and it's misery-inducing (3D games are more tolerable).
I've gone into RetroArch settings and lowered the audio buffer to as low as it will go and it doesn't seem to help much. I'm fairly certain the issue is at an Android level.
This is in direct comparison to my former emulation device, my rooted Moto G7 Play running the Android 12 release of Lineage OS, a custom Android ROM.
Running the same exact emulators, settings and same ROMs across both devices, there is a significant difference in audio latency performance. Moto G7 Play has no discernible lag at all, whereas the Retroid Pocket 3+ is detectable. It's so disappointing, because this is nearly a perfect handheld for the price.
I'm not sure if it's a difference in software, maybe a difference between Android 11 and 12.. maybe it could be the way the kernel is configured on the RP3+ and could be fixed through a patch, I just don't know.
I'm hoping that the Retroid devs address this problem in a future update, but I have my doubts. Failing this, I'm looking into rooting it myself and seeing if it can be tweaked at a kernel level.

I love the conversation and following the evolution of these devices. I have purchased some of these devices in the past. What is more and more apparent to me is that the Nintendo Switch Lite at just under $200 is literally unbeatable, even if the retro games are not as plentiful and more expensive. I own many hundreds of retro games that I have extracted roms from that I have put on the Anbernic RG350M and Evercade (yes, I hacked it). On the Switch, I have to buy them in collections and/or wait for them. BUT in the end, the Switch can play amazing new games, and a good amount of my favorite retro games and it's all legal. The Switch also has a well laid out control system, great UI, a store, long battery life, great screen, and accessories people can buy. Like I said, unbeatable.

I learn a lot about the settings and changes I can make to have games look even better as well (as in this video, the integer scaling, which also led me to finding the bilinear filter which I faaar prefer having turned off and being able to see clear pixels instead of blurring).
I've been looking into the Retroid as well, as a starter unit. It looks light, and everyone seems to have good opinions of it...

Anbernic feels like it must have multiple, isolated design teams that never ever communicate or work together.
Some models are so aesthetically premium, others are like cheap toys, some have some good quality in their OS, functions and specs- others just slap the baseline chipset of the current gen into a case and ship it off with zero ‘secret sauce’ or ‘killer app’ type features that make you want to get them over the competitors.

"garbage emulators", put a little bit of respect on the names of those benevolent developers you're consuming stuff from for free.

I really love your videos with all the details. can you please stick with metric? It feels so mixed, like the size of buttons in mm, the size of the device in inches, the thickness of the device in mm, the weight in metric but then the difference of the image sze with scaling options again in inches (mm would help here, because we already got the % of screen usage anyway). I am just saying it would be great if it is one system so there is no need to use a calculator/converter on a second screen while watching. thanks again for a great video!

Something to keep in mind, higher resolution doesn't always mean better...especially when playing retro games. These games were designed to be played on low resolution screens. I game on a crt for retro consoles but decided to buy a RP3+ for gba emulation as I find the original gba screen painfully small. I thought the higher res screen wouldn't be much of an issue with smaller screens but I was wrong. Gba looks really pixilated on the RP3+. I also am not a fan of color representation on the RP3+ screen. I find some colors tend to look a bit milky and washed out. I had to use another app to balance the whites better. On the other hand I have a vita and love the vibrant oled panel, so I'm gonna sell this and go for the RG505.

Can you use a crt shader on retroarch to make the game looks better on rp3+?

great comparo. I’d like to upgrade my rgb max 2 but its ergonomics still seem hard to beat with rounded grips.

Man Powkiddy could kill it with a T618 RGB MAX 3.
