What Does a Razor Sharp Edge Look Like ULTRA Close up?

- What does a razor sharp edge look like up close? In this video I show what a Sharp edge looks like compared to a dull edge. I wanted to take the sharpening out of the comparison, so I just used some of the sharpest factory blades I know of, and compared them before and after a lot of cardboard cutting. Its interesting what simple cardboard does to a knife edge over time! Im new to macro videography and macro photography so in time I hope to get better at lighting so we can see the edge even clearer.

Have ypu sharpened on sand paper instead of stones?
I'm sorry, but this was extremely boring, just add the sharpening aspect to the video.
Hi! I'd like to see the bevel that the most reviewed knife sharpener gives to some poor knives. And what about "the ultimate knife"?
It would be awesome to see you redo the ceramic knife sharpening video, with this microscope lense.
At least I think it would be interesting.
Great stuff! I cant wait to see how well you do getting it back to hair sharp. I for one, cant do it...yet, at least freehand. still trying though. Keep it up.
I wonder how a mirror polished edge would look under that strong Magnification and i love seeing videos from you again.
Yeah, wonder if ce can make a smooth edge
Just look it up

"A katana"
No. Katanas are not somehow magically sharp. This razor blade is going to be sharper than just about any katana. And most katanas feature a relatively common saber/"scandi" flat grind, although sometimes a compound bevel edge. So... if you want to know what a katana edge looks like, buy a $15 Scandinavian Mora knife that is high carbon steel, sharpen and strop it, and look at it. Because the very edge apex, what you're actually cutting with, is going to be almost the same as most katanas. It's not like as soon as you curve the blade a bit and put some Japanese kanji on it and talk about cherry blossoms that the thing somehow becomes a lightsaber that can cut through tanks and machine gun barrels and deflect bullets and cut mountains in half.
@@dermotmcgreevy5220 Why not,i too would think it would be interesting
I love this new style of videos. I'm studied materials science and I wanted to go even deeper into this topic, such as using an electron microscope (overkill, you think?), and also how difference grades of steel affects the blades ability to reach a really tight apex. Enjoying this educational aspect of your videos so much!
Yeah id like to go even farther in the future. You definitely learn a lot actually being able to see this small🙂
Did you learn anythig about gasses inside metals there?
Interesting you mention SEM. I’m interested in a decent solution for digital microscope that has better output than in this video ( i need clarity within few microns). If in your research, you found an ideal digital alternative for SEM to inspect the sharpened edge, please share.
You should do a vid with a cheap knife vs expensive knife edge to see the difference from the factory. This was interesting keep it up👍
Someone is having fun with his new microscope. But definitely fascinating. Excellent work !
Your channel is like a quick sharpening course. It has helped me very much, thank you.
I feel like I'm not cheering anyone else as much as You on being a successful youtuber - all around good, hard working person :]
OMG ! It never rains & then it POURS !
I really cannot say what made me more happy : To see our favourite knife-man back in action, or
To see this video which I have been searching in vain for ever and even tried to make it myself with macro-lens etc (no it didn't work)
Whatever it is, I pray all the house issues will be sorted out soon and the MUCH deserved happiness will return & prevail.
PA represent! Still the best sharpening content on UA-cam.
Thanks my friend 🙏
Damn I’m in northeast pa..didn’t even know that’s where he was at
Agreed, sharpening guru.

You got me into sharpening knives and really improving, my girlfriend use to get mad at me for spendings hours practicing, I’ve spent no joke over 300 hours in the past 7 months after work sharpening knives, and now my girlfriend has the sharpest knives she could want. And I’ve gotten into making knives which is all to exciting!
Just wanted to say thank you Alex, I have been watching and learning from your videos. I now can sharpen my knives better than I ever have before. 💯
This is awesome I luv seeing the edge up close and all the details . Can't wait to see more. Thanks.
oh you're back lets gooo
I've honestly been looking forward to seeing you start uploading again, and you did not disappoint! Very glad to see you back at it again!
Great video! I really appreciate the effort you're putting into showing us the dynamics of the edge of the blade. Thanks for the links to your camera and lenses. You're on the next level of knife knowledge and photography. Thanks
i used those blade everyday for 10yrs , deff some of the sharpest razor blades ive ever used , neat 2 see em up close , especially now that im into knifemaking , looking forward 2 seeing more thx man
These new videos have been so educational, thanks! Your videos have always been informative (sharpening, knife-making), but these are a whole new level of education. Awesome job, thanks!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I'd like to see a quick side-by-side picture of a piece of paper that was cut with a freshly sharpened edge as opposed to an edge that needs to be sharpened.
I did a double take when I saw that this was only 2 days old and that it wasn’t just UA-cam suggesting one of the many older videos I’ve watched before. Great video and I’m excited to see what you come up with using this lens! Glad to see you back!
Great to see your notifications again. Love your videos of your special skills. I had no idea how rough a sharp edge was.
Great illustration of edge wear! Thanks!
So happy to have you back.
thanks for bringing your channel back. i always enjoy your point of view.
Great video! It is incredible to see how much wear and damage did just regular cardboard to the blade!
hey mate!
i just wanted to let you know that i was really struggling with getting a shaving edge on a knife (and oh boy have i been trying) and thanks to you i have succeeded in doing so for the first time this week.
thanks a lot!
Knife guy is back? YAY! ^_^ WELCOME BACK!!!! Love your stuff and looking forward with enthusiasm what new have you cooked and coming up.
Amazing camera/lens! You are taking us to a world we have never seen! Thanks!
Good to see you back homie
Thanks 👍
Glad to see you are back!!
You're gonna overload UA-cam HQ with this upload rate.
This video SHOWS us much more about blade sharpening than the videos that merely show/demonstrate how to sharpen blades on various stones.
it's so good to see you back and fine! I'm so happy :)
Glad ur back!
Keep up the good work👍
Thanks, this is a great perspective. And a fresh one! Looking forward to the upcoming series.
Cheers
So happy your back!!!!
Glad to see you back in my feed after that break.
Great work! really glad you are uploading content again
Great to see you back.
I’ve been watching your videos and this feels like “the birth of a legend” video.
Thank you for making these videos! I am learning to sharpen knives and I already have a microscope so it is very useful to know how they are supposed to look. The knives in my house are all blunt so your video really helps me to understand what I am supposed to see.
Glad your back making videos brother. I’ve learned a lot watching them
Glad you're back, good job
Duuude we need more videos from you. They are really good
Good to have you back.
Very coo, Alex. So good to have you back.
The only knife sharpening channel that I have subscribed to. Been watching your videos for quite some time now. Happy that you are back!!!
Thanks for sticking around 👍
I wonder how scalpel blades look under that lens? I'd like to see how many bevels they have and how they handle the hair whittling.
Interesting stuff, thanks
Scalpel blades would look exactly the same as this razor blade does. They are no different than this razor blade other than the shape.
@@orion7741 I imagine you are right, I can only see one grind and the edge bevel is a finer polish finish. I can't seem to get a scalpel to whittle a hair - old eyes & poor hair choice may be my reason for failing here.
Love this video ,it's a nice change from all the knife videos in the knife community
Thanks! Figured id try doing some different stuff 👍Thanks for watching 👊
Brilliant photography. Thanks for sharing with fellow sharpening obsessives 👍
wow this new equipment is mindblowing,it is ideal to see clearly what you have on your bevels👉im really looking forward to see more of theese videos, very nice
Good to see ya back
That was cool. And glad you are back
So happy you are back...
I really like the implementation of your new devices!
Just wow, thanks for the effort. That looks amazing!!!
Yay! You’re back!
Thanks for this! Informative to see what a new and a worn edge look like. Just getting into knifemaking, so this is WAY useful!
Very interesting and another great video. Thanks for the “step-up set-up”. Brings a truly exciting new dimension to knife-making. Your explanations are highly regarded and appreciated. One of my favorite channels on youtube. Thank you. Remain safe. Regards from South Africe
This might sound strange bud, but it’s good to hear your voice again 😂. You single handily got me into knife making and I will be forever grateful. Iv made a couple of knives now and also a mini forge to heat treat them with. keep it up Alex much love from the UK 👍
Very interesting and informative.
Thank you.
Videos like this one and your knife making videos are what got me into sharpening and then making knives. I'm grateful for the entertainment and inspiration but also curse what you have done to my wallet.
A great video. Thanks for showing it.
Just started viewing and subscribed. Love your very clear (and humorous) narrative. Getting myself ready to have a go at making my first knife and later one for my adult son's birthday. I am really keen on converting a file; love the residual cross hatch etc on the finished product. Good luck with your re-settlement. Pete from Australia
Blows my mind somebody would put a thumbs-down on any of you guys videos I guess they're all scientists themselves they don't need to see this! I think these are most excellent videos and demonstration spot-on
To be honest I love the series videos where you make amazing knives
Glad you're back.
Knocking it out of the park! Can't wait for the next video.
Yo I’ve miss your videos so much! Keep up the good work 🤘
keep on posting more buddy. i want to see some more of that good old knifemaking.
Nice to see you back
Love this channel👍
Man I'm glad to see these videos popping up
Great as always ! 👍
Very nice educational video! Good job mate.
Great photography
Crazy cool close up shots! I'd love to see some close ups during your manufacturing processes. Maybe some close up shots of different bevel/grind types? All sorts of opportunities!
I like all of your videos. Lots of good information. I appreciate you making the videos. I am trying to get better at sharpening free hand on stones. Not easy yet.
These are incredible man great job!
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing
Great video. Good to have you back.
Would’ve loved to see it stropped after. To see what my knife edge looks like after some use then a quick strop. Outstanding video.
Awesome to see you back at it, you inspired me a ways back, love the new camera view, good stuff👌
Glad to have you back. I'm going to go watch some of your old videos, try to get some algorithm juice flowing for you.
That new camera lens could cause severe OCD. Under the lens, when would the edge be sharp enough?
Great informative video !
I'm so glad you're back.
Amazing video, thank you.
Very interesting comparison!
So glad your uploading consistently again. I have so much more fun free handing than using my KME and EdgePro Apex. I credit you, Michael Christie and Sean from BBB for that.
Love your videos keep making them
So glad you're back
You have no idea how much we have missed you
Super interesting, thanks.
This is amazing 👍 thanks for sharing
Keep it coming glad to see you back hope all is well
I have seen close ups of surgical scalpels after a procedure just on human flesh. The before/after is stunning. Those blades are so fine of an edge that muscle, skin and tendons will dull them.
It would be interesting to see the view parallel the edge before and after sharpening
Good stuff! Glad you’re back
Fascinating... thank you
That is really neat to see
