  • This is the very first time I have tried this, so please excuse the poor execution. I will get better at this as time goes on.
    I apologize if there is nothing to learn from this video. It was mainly a proof of concept for me, but hopefully you can gain at least something from it. Let me know if this kind of thing interests you guys!

    It's the shutter in your camera that phase with your lights ac current at 50 or 60 hz. When your shutter adjusts to the brightness of the blade, the shutter rate possibly start to sync up with the light source in your room. Change to a regular bulb or fix your exposure to a permanent setting on the camera

    Very informative. I’ve heard of micro-bevels but never owned a knife with one until this week when I bought a cheap Ruike flipper. I looked at the edge with just a strong magnifying glass and didn’t understand what I was seeing until I watched your video. 👍

    That's cool...I use a magnifying glass, thanks to you, in my sharpening kit. It makes looking for the burr, chips, rolls so much easier..I get better results

    Now you got me over here with my 10x jeweler's loupe seeing what I can see on some of my edges, LMAO! I just sharpened up and stropped my Manix 2 LW in CTS-BD1 and it's a really nice cutter, the edge is not mirror polished but the bevel looks pretty nice and uniform.
    I for one think it was very cool seeing these things, more, more! HAHA!
    I've always been the type that liked grabbing my binoculars and magnifying glass and exploring everything. I used to look into my cuts with a loupe too. LOL.

    I've got a question for you. I recently purchased a edge pro system and love it for the most part, but have run into an issue. After I've gotten my bevels and start using finer grits (600 and up), I get little, very obvious, scratches in certain parts. Could this be from my "technique" or perhaps something else? I'm a bit confused as to why this is happening, as I have use other guided systems before (clamp system) and never had this happen. Any insight would be greatly appreciated and if you have done a video on this, please send a link. Thank you.

    It would be interesting to see the blade close up without magnification first and then with magnification so we can get a sense of the edge we are looking at.

    After using stones to create a toothy edge, how does stropping effect it? Does it refine a toothy edge or round off the teeth which would reduce the "bite" I'd think? The strops I use are cow hide leather wth DMT diamond paste (6 and 1 micron). I also have some horse hide leather strops. It is much harder than the cow. Have you ever done a review of different strop material? Leather types, balsa wood, cardboard, etc. Murray Carter just uses newspaper layed across a stone. Your thoughts?

    i'd imagine a toothy (650) micro bevel would cut better initially but a let's say 6000 grit micro bevel would last a bit longer? i know a micro is much easier to touch up / hone, but does a solid beveled edge, with no micro, last longer?

    I would personally like to see what you can do to some VG-10 bro... then show us up under the 'scope. I love VG-10, not the best available these days but it certainly has a place in my heart after having performed for me for so many years.
    Also... I'd love to see some edges after you do your cut tests on the rope, to see what all kinds of micro damage is occurring... I vote for that for sure. Basically anything to give us all some more data and knowledge on the subject is good in my book.

    Yes, the edge finish should not be confused with the beveling terms, but this is mainly a hobby type discussion so the terms go all over the place. If you check the literature the bevels are very clearly defined, but not every author uses the same definitions either.

    I think the lens is trying to auto adjust to the rapidly changing light due to the reflections as you rock the blade.

    thee blinking on and off is likely an electronic effect in the video cam. Look at where on the blade you are lighting when this happens. I've seen that when the light reflects in 2 directions and confuses the camera.

    A micro-bevel is just that, a bevel which can not be seen by eye, it isn't maintained as such it is simply ignored when sharpening the apex bevel. The blunting of an edge would exceed the extent of the micro-bevel which has to be reset if one is desired when the apex bevel is sharpened.

    The terms used in discussing knives are not well adopted and everyone tends to use their own preferences. Technically a micro-bevel is another bevel however when switching grits even with clamp/jig systems the stone heights can make small changes in angle so technically you could end up with 3-7 bevels but generally no one would regard them as such as none are visible or intentional.

    With what tool would the precision sharpener use to reset the micro-bevel?
    Yeah, I think calling a toothy edge a micro bevel is incorrect. Basically, isn't it just a toothy edge?

    Yeah the term micro in a lay sense just means small, like the micro-machine toys. However the actual academic/metallurgical use means micron scale. The problem in using a vague definition is that the discussion gets problematic because a micro-bevel which is on the nature of a micron is very different than one which is on the scale of 100 microns (which you can barely see) in how they effect performance/sharpening etc. .
    Ironically, the name of my channel hints at nano-bevels.

    I don't feel as though micro bevels do give strength... they just make sharpening easy and save metal. My factory edges that have no micro bevels always hold up much longer than after I micro bevel with a sharpmaker. I think I need an edge pro.

      +ford fairlane well this first comment was over a year ago, I had since bought the edgepro. I generally do them free hand, or if i'm feeling goofy i'll use the sharpmaker. I generally do not micro bevel knives though.

      Butchers want a toothy edge, that saws through the meat. That's why they use relatively coarse stones and a coarse butcher steel to create new teeth into the edge.

    Micro-bevels in industry are usually what results after a pass on the buffer, the angle and width of the bevel will depend on the force used, the number of passes and the nature of the wheel (softer wheels produce larger bevels). As the micro-bevel is just that, micro, the performance is relatively insensitive to angle compared to the primary or apex bevel. You are talking about the edge to an extent on the order of 1/10 of 1 thousand of an inch.

    Hmmm...I have some beefs with micro bevels. Start off with, the manufacturers do not specify that they grind such micro bevels, that I know of. How is an owner supposed to sharpen a knife with a bevel he cannot see, and wasn't informed about? It's so small, who is skilled enough to maintain a micro bevel? How would you know if you were accurately maintaining such a bevel without an expensive microscope? Manufacturers are grinding edges that defy maintenance, and fool their customers.

      Ken Smith imagine a serrated knife. Now think of those teeth getting smaller and smaller everything you go up in store grit. So yes in a way. Toothy is like bigger teeth at the apex
