- Run Silent, Run Deep by Raven from the album All For One. John Gallagher's bass parts on this tune are truly incredible. Yes - that is him soloing in the intro! John inspired me to put a whammy on my bass and let it rip! This tune also features a great 8/12 string bass part during the "quiet" interlude. John and Raven are truly inspiring. Check them out! DAMN! THAT WAS INSANE! You are a BEAST! MORE RAVEN!!!
Thank you sir!
Amazing!!!! Which effects do you/John use?
Thanks WizardoofFuzz! Most appreciated! I do not know what John used on this but I can tell you that I did not use any real effects at all. I'm using a $20 generic UAE into JamVox software to record the bass direct into a Mac. A little compression and a little overdrive on the 4 string. That bass has EMGs and a pretty aggressive tone without any effects needed. The 12-string is direct with no effects at all. That bass has Bartolinis and a real even tone without needing compression. The 12-strings have a natural chorusing effect due to the multiple sets of strings. Real simple, but real lo quality compared to a lot of channels on YT. Thanks for stopping by!
I thought I heard an octaver but that sounds seems to come from the guitar. That Raven bass sound is so unique due to the vibrato. I've heard it a thousand times because back when I was 9 or 10 I made my own mixtapes and at the end of any side there always seemed to be one minute left to fill. So I took the shortest track I could find on any of my CDs which was John's bass solo from the "Live In Japan" album :D
John often had a lot of OD on his bass and used 8 & (I believe) 12-string basses. This would give you a perfect octaver effect due to the multiple sets of octave strings. Cheers!
Ah, of course! That makes perfect sense!
Oh.. lots of dirt! It’s an 8 string with chorus
I’m extremely confused…. You can clearly hear the bass line in the background (me and my buddy used to cover this song so im pretty familiar - plus i just have an ear) though you state you are playing johns “amazing bass parts”…. I have never seen this done live, but I have no idea what the guitar player would be doing if he wasnt playing the parts you are calling “bass” parts???? I could be totally wrong - and regardless the video is pretty cool though - drop the pick…
Nothing to be confused about. If you are familiar with Raven or have seen Raven you know some of the solos that one would think were a guitar were played by John on bass, not Mark. The opening solo in this song is John on bass. The quiet section is a multi octave string bass. I used a 12, John may have used an 8. John was,and still is, absolutely amazing and until I saw them live many years ago in the early 80s did not fully appreciate how much John was doing on bass that could have easily been mistaken for guitar. A band that never really got their due.
Drop the pick? Didn’t quite understand that.

On the intro The bass plays the solo … the OP is close but missed the two hand tapping… the guitar basically (!!) plays the bass line!
Hi. Whats the brand of strings that you are using on your 2 basses ? Thanks
Hi! Rotos on the 4 string and the 4 bass strings on the Hamer and Ernie Ball guitar strings for the higher strings on the Hamer.
