hagstrom is underrated! some of their best work was a very big-sounding wide frequency single coil bass pickup called a bisonic. these were sourced to guild and used from 65 til the mid 70s. some 70s guilds used a muddier (but very pleasant) humbucker guild made themselves. hagstrom's bisonic is one of the very best pickups ever made for bass.
I bought an original H8 when I was still in high school, but miitary service and other things took my life in a different direction. I had to leave the H8 behind when I moved from Massachusetts to Maine, about 25 years after I bought it. Now, another 27 years since the move, I'm wishing I had it. I can only hope someone found it in the barn where it was stored, knew what it was, and preserved it.
I know it isn't the same instrument, but they're still doing reissues. I picked up a reissue just a couple of days ago at guitar center for right around a grand. It's a phenomenal instrument, and if you have the extra cash, you ought to rekindle that fire
How the hell would the Jimi Hendrix Estate even be aware that Mark played a Hendrix tune?? Covering a tune of his is considered copyright infringement?? I'm convinced that either Experience Hendrix, LLC has an operative amongst us or Wikileaks was tipped off. Badass bass though!
Yeah. It was pulled really quickly. 20 minutes? Some of this stuff hangs out for years, but not GOTD!
Actually playing any licensed song in a commercial setting is not exactly a copyright issue - no-one is claiming they wrote a Hendrix song - bur it IS an infringement of the ASCAP/BMI license bc nobody is paying the copyright holder their royalty. It's a royalty issue. I was quoted $15,000 for 1 year to license a BTO song for use in a podcast w 1000 weekly listens. Uh no thanks -forget I asked...I'll use this lame royalty-free thing instead...
There was a time when artists wanted their songs played. Good for business. The actually PAID DJ's to play their songs. Payola. DJ's got busted for that back in the day. Now you have to pay artists to play their songs on any broadcast which is why radio sucks, the music business sucks, and no one is making out anymore.... Easier for a station to pay a fee to a company that leases a group of tunes and they play the crap out of them. No deviation. No requests for anything not on the "playlist"
Antoine Stephen as long as you don't get money for the performance, you don't infringe anything
I had an acquaintance who owned/managed a bar and he paid ASCAP a fixed fee (something like $12,000) to cover any band that covered a copyrighted piece of music.
I wish I could've seen the original upload of this one.
It is the same video, not redone, it looks they just took out the bit with the Hendrix song. You can see the sharp edit in the video at the 5:33 minute mark.
Zelomeisterdude I know, I want to hear the Hendrix song.
When did they end up uploading the first video? I checked for several hours after they normally post them and it wasn't there. Or did it get uploaded fairly early and then they too it down?
Richard Wielgosz...It got posted around 6PM PST, my time. When I clicked on it it was already blacked out in the USA because of the copyright claim. It stayed up for an hour or two, I think, before it was taken down by Norm's. I managed to see it on Canada UA-cam using the built in VPN on the Opera browser, it wasn't blacked out there.
I REALLY LIKE THIS BASS - BEEN TRYING TO BUY ONE FROM A FRIEND FOR 20 YEARS - NOEL REDDING HAD A RED ONE HE USED FOR RECORDING WITH JIMI
Buy the re-issue Hagström H8II?
Have the same one. Bought it used in 1977. The most stable trouble fee neck of all
16 of my basses ! The aluminum "H" channel around the truss works.
The switches are the weak point - very dodgy requiring yearly cleaning.
I have a fretless 4 string version, maybe 1 of 10. It's a shame someone before me threw out the electronics and painted it a God awful surf green, trying yo refinish it close to original
I will never be sick of Fenders or Gibsons! It is nice to mix it up though.
Mark they are called courses. On a standard 4 string bass there are 4 strings per course. For the h8, there are two strings per course but still only 4 courses. Finally, on a 12 string bass there are 3 strings per course but only four courses. I hope this was helpful!
I'm looking at a triple neck Chibson JEM and thinking about taking it apart... swirl paint and all
you guys make me laugh 😂 old jokes are still fun
Love Hagstrom guitars 💝
3 strings per *course*.
Thanks for reupping the edited version. RIP, Spanish Castle Magic.
Can someone please tell me why Jimi Hendrix's estate is being so harsh with copyright law? Why would it be hard if Mark did a little riff from Noel Redding
Andrew Pappas You would think that it would just add to Jimi’s estate in the long run.
@@MrJohnr47 Yeah
@@andrewpappas9311 good points both of you....a friend in NYC was in a Prince tribute band. They posted a 30 second clip of a song and within 48 hours they had a rep DMing them demanding they take it down.
my guess is that the Hendrix estate has paid a ton of $ to get back royalties, etc. and they were in that mode at the time. Seem to remember news of litigation around 2016-17-ish too.
Side note Noel is one of the GOATs that is for damn sure.
Don’t you think African-American musicians have had enough stolen from them? Wake up!
thank you.for doing this video of the Hagstroms bass. please do another one for a Hagstrom acoustic six string. Thanks again. Love your show dude.
I have one of these basses. Mine is a 67 and in "good" condition - far from mint!
The neck is amazingly slim and rarely if ever needs adjustment. Most of my other basses need a twice yearly truss tweak here in the northeast to account for our huge humidity swings, not this baby. Has an extruded aluminum channel around the truss rod makes it super stable..
The single coil pickups are wide ranging , very "hi fi" but the many little slider switches are the biggest drawback. They crap out regularly despite professional cleaning. Not very high quality but I keep them so it is "all original". Pretty much have to play this thing with a pick.
I have one, too. My first bass! The slide switches are a pain. There is one of Jimi's at The Experience in Seattle.
@@davidharris7249 Yes, fantastic neck, crappy switches!
Often considered replacing them with mini bat toggles.
The only big repair in 40 years was pulling the bridge and installing
half inch maple dowels in the body under it for the screws to sink into
as they were pulling out of the mahogany body wood.
I live 200 meters from one of Hagstroms old factories in Sweden. Now they are making gravestones there.
This is also the bass John Paul Jones played "Achilles Last Stand" in the studio with.
Didn't know that ! thanks
riff #1 Jeremy
Pearl Jam
riff #2 Black Flag
King's X
riff #3 -edited out-
the Jimi Hendrix Experience
Second riff is Surrender by Cheap Trick
when strings are tightly grouped together and meant to be played at once it's called a course. so 8 and 12 string basses are both considered four-course instruments.
Black Flag by King's X. 12 string Hamer played by Doug Pinnick.
Mark, you should start a riff tutorial channel. I learned the Pink Floyd "Money" bass line from you, but I don't remember the guitar you reviewed!
I've got a Hagstrom Super Swede and love it. Mark thanks for the H-shout-out...
5:00 I was jamming on ''Big me'' by foo fighters to that chord progression.
I died laughing when Jen said "Beyoncé" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Back n the 60's Hagstrom was the best bang for your buck guitar on the market. Slim, fast neck and great snappy sounds. That sound on that 8 string reminds me of a few ELP songs and I've seen Greg Kake use a similar one (probably a Hamer.
prog is it's only hope
Welcome back! The Hendrix excerpt will be a lost classic like the Beach Boys' Smile.
I'm not really into bass guitars, but that thing is badass! I loved the sound!
Really good bass guitar
I have that exact same bass EXCEPT it is a factory 4 string model. Everything else is the same as that one. Super thin neck and the sound is very warm and mellow.
I wonder where Norman finds all these guitars to resell?
You’d think with eBay and Reverb it would be tough to find them and then resell them.
Awesome demo...love it. I have the same one from 1968. It's a fantastic bass, and the neck is beautiful to handle. Funny I play it with a pick too; it just seems right.
Happy THUMPIN' Thursday
(take two) Thanks for the repost
Mark & Jen!
"......three strings per saddle?"
I know Frank Zappa loved
his Hangstrom guitars!
JEREMY SPOKEEEN IN CLASS TODAY
Hell yeah
I have to get one of these that sounds amazing
VERY cool rare. Last time I saw one it had guitar strings on the smaller machine heads. Extremely complicated if you wanted it to be. Could do guitar riff and bass lines at same time. I thought that was the factory set up. Is it possible the octave strings are a after market more rational change?
By the way I have a 1967 4 string Hagstroms hollow body. BEAUTIFUL old red lacquer with great balance and super fast thin neck. Unfortunately it had the same tone as a cigar box no matter what I did to it. Eventually decided to use aged wood making a multi- piece epoxied backbone inside to extend the neck all the way past the bridge. It made a huge difference even before plugging it in it sounded like a real bass. Never would have messed with the insides but some how as beautiful as Hagstrom made the body no about of electronic coolness made as much difference to the sound Being a 67 and according to Hagstrom 1 of only 750 that model. I admit it's desecration, but in defense it's restored with NOS original parts ordered from them. Plus it really sounded like shit. My other bass is a 65 Hofner so used to hollow bodies and that one is stock
I would love to hear this live through Ampeg with the eight tens cranked up it would be awesome beautiful guitar though nice looking
Ayyy I finally get to watch it
This bass sounds sick!! Im diggin the 8 string
The band he was looking for is 'King's X'....the bassist Dug Pinnick used a twelwe string bass....but i think it was Hamer basses.
Woah, that sounds immense.
this bass would rock with the higher octave set taken off too
My Brother had one back in the day while I had their regular 4 string. For a while he did take the extra strings off & I rem thinking what a great 4 string it made.
I had one of these for about a year and it did rock very nicely as a 4-banger.
keith ruddell my brother still has his which he bought from Manny's in the early Seventies, and he plugged up the secondary string holes and uses it as a standard four for all these years.
The guitars are great.. I have two from the vintage era and two from the current reissue era.
Hey can you start including the price at the very end of the videos? Cuz I'm seriously considering buying this
Damn that's gorgeous! Would go so well with my 1965 Hagstrom II my cousin found for me.
This is the bass Norse Lipton of the "Mind Garage" a local band made it big on RCA Records in the late 60's ..They I think opened for Iron Butterfly at one rime
I've seen them on You Tube The Mind Garage
Hagström! :D
Emanuel Johansson svensk eller?
Aa :D
Holy shit an 8 string bass! Now do a fretless and I will be extremely happy!
Check out Argentinian band "Divididos - Sabado (live)"
please ask norm to make a little show of what he bought
111 Thousand Subscriber CONGRATS!!!
Thanks for the reupload :)
You should listen to Mind Garage (which is a band from 1967-1970), Norris Lytton used a Hagstrom H8 for all the albums and for playing live
Has anybody seen Mike Damone? I'm trying to score some Cheap Trick tickets...
tiny b
yea, last time I heard he was helping out his father in the garage.
Haters gonna H8!
Great Choice!!! Hagstroms are cool man!
The first tune was a good choice, but these are the most versatile played with fingers instead of a pick. It's easier to get single notes mixed in with the octaves.
.....really wanted to hear Spanish Castle Magic, but still a cool bass. I know Jimi would have been cool with it!
Black Flag - Kings X - Texas
I have an early 60s hollow body Hagstorm. O idea what model it is, but it’s freakean amazing with flatwounds. The gold foil pickups sound really good but they’re starting to crackle. Can’t decide if I want an SG bass or another hollow body bass with nitro finish
Had one in the mid 80"s now very hard to get especially when one is broke.
fuck im too early for someone to list the songs
TheBaileyK im pretty sure the first one is Jeremy by Pearl jam. not sure about the other.
Surrender by Cheap Trick.
Jeremy was done with one of the Hamer twelves, but this is pretty close overall
Yes it's Jeremy. When I played it I actually used a program that ART had just for the twelve string Hamer. It's actually not a bad patch for the era.
Weird. I really couldn't pick out Surrender at all. That appears to really need the twelve.
Thumpin'... Friday?
Ian Anderson this was yesterday's videos it got taken down
Fingering Friday
A set of strings tuned in unison or octave as on a 12 string guitar or 8 or 12 string bass is called a course.
woah, Gotta build one, ..
Nice!!
John Paul jones tracked 'Achilles last stand' and 'nobody's fault but mine' with one of these! Thanks for playing Jeremy though! Despite playing it wrong ;)
“At home, drawing pictures… of mountain tops……”
Genesis used it a lot, mike rutherford can be.heard with it on several late 70's album
I'll never get tired of gibsons and fenders, btw i'd love to see a junior or a special again :)
I really want to see a sg bass!
might wanna go back and listen to that Jeremy bass line. ;) PS....love your channel.
*has one of the coolest bass guitars in history*
*plays pearl jam*
Dam love the Pearl Jam bro .. Nice !!
Plug it into the SVT!!!
Cool. Thanks a bunch Man. What do you think of the HAGSTROM H8-II Wild Cherry Transparent, since the H8 is super rare and burns a whole in my pocket, :)
They look great! I like the tuner configuration with 1 smaller tuner for every octave strings.
2:35 wow she said beyonce
I love 65 amps
I see Hagstrom is producing another guitar like this, not quite a reissue as there are some differences. Cool bass, nonetheless! I know little about bass guitars but I would love to have this in my collection!
Do you have any Martin guitars to show us?; any cool Banjos? Love the vids! - and the whole gang at Norm's Rare Guitars. Thanks for sharing with us.
John Paul Jones used a 12 or 8 on nobody's fault but mine. (I think)
I think you may be right, but he's used so much gear over the years it's impossible to keep track.
8 string, he used it on Achilles last stand as well
If you have one, DO A TRAVIS BEAN. Insanely underrated guitars.
Doug Pinnick used to play one of these 12 string alien basses, right ?
He used one of those Hamer twelve string insanity machines, the same as Cheap Trick's Doug Peterson and at one point there was talk of a Doug Pinnick signature.
Jimi Hendrix on get that feeling playin on hangstrom
yeah what happened yesterday
the Hendrix Estate made youtube remove it. Sucks!
should've played Stanley Clarke's "Lopsy Loo"!
Do a rickenbacker 481 if you ever get one please!
Zappa!
AT HOME DRAWING PICTURES OF MOUNTAIN TOPS. WITH HIM ON TOP
do the banjo on your left side in the beginning of every video
Is this passive or active bass please?
One thing: pronunciatuon of the 'mister' in Kilmister is like mr in English, not meister as in German.
On a stringed instrument each separate string or pair of strings is called a course. So a six string has one string per course. A twelve string has two strings per course. And so on ......
Spinal Tap!!!!
Lemmy Kajlmajster LOL
Do something in silverburst since mastodons new album is coming our soon.
Dude what happened? There's no answer to why it was blocked yesterday
UA-cam blocked the video in certain countries because of one of the songs.
Derek Adams The Jimi Hendrix Estate pull the video down, because Mark has played one of the parts Spanish Castle Magic(Sorry about my english, I need to study more)
Normans Rare Guitars ah man there ain't no life nowhere
That's OK Muddy, you can play guitar.
What a fuk'n joke!
what was the second song
at least he mentioned a king's x song lol
Hi that was ME
At what point did "controls" become "EQ's"
(I haven't watched from the inception...)
Was the camera women threatening you with a purple nurple at the beginning?
Jeremy!!!
