We did this production a few years ago in my high school, I played the roles of Lorraine Sheldon and Harriet Stanley! I played Lorraine like Marilyn Monroe, she was a hit. And Harriet was by far one of the crowd favorites. I got the most claps at the end!
Now hear this, you fans of the 1942 movie---that version will always be great to us, but do yourselves a favor and check out this production as well, for sale online (or for rent at Netflix.) It has some hysterical dialogue that never made it into the Woolley version--too bad, because he would have nailed it. The Roundabout Company cast, headed by Lane and Harris, is just wonderful and gives a fresh spin on the story we love. NOW----it's 17 years later after this production was introduced. Why hasn't some smart producer talked Kelsey Grammer into playing Sheridan Whiteside? What better match of actor and part could possibly exist today?
What perfect casting Mary Catherine Wright as nurse Preen. I lover her nervous demeanor. Such an effective and sadly under used performer. She was GREAT in Awakenings also.
I just watched this version again after many years. IF you can temporarily forget the movie -which isn't easy -it's quite well done. Lane is very good, but the underrated Jean Smart REALLY nails "Lorraine Sheldon.:
Here are some other well known people in the show: William Duell was Johnny in the Police Squad! series. Mary Catherine Garrison played Catherine in "The Foreigner" with Matthew Broderick. Ruby Holbrook was in the original production "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940" Lewis Stadlen actually played Groucho in "Minnie's Boys".
Anyone who thinks that Nathan Lane is either overacting, or is worse at this part than Monty Wooley has never read anything by or about Alexander Woollcott. I was ready to hate this, but I have to say that Mr. Lane is positively brilliant!
Well, that was just the way Monty interpreted the role. Actually, the role was originally written for Alexander Woolcott, who was the inspiration for Whiteside, but at first he decided not to do it. Then he did it on the West Coast.
Do you live in NY? Go to Drama Book Store, they have it, although let me tell you the printed script does have some discrepancies, like Banjo not doing the song.
Monty Wooley was just a little too sophisticated for me. The way Nathan plays Sherry he feels a lot more complex, and more funny. He makes me realize, Sherry isn't really as suave as he thinks he is. Underneath all that wit and sophistication he really is a bruiser, and not that far from the obnoxious guy in a bar.

As good as Nathan Lane is in the role, Harriet Harris keeps up with him at every turn. What a great pairing.
Gad, can't someone put up the whole of this? I saw it years ago on PBS (FDT) and would LOVE to see it again.

It is actually Timon not Timone.
"Samuel J. Levowitz will explain it to you in court!" 😂
The Meerkat Who Came To Dinner
I love how everyone is smiling at him. I wonder if one of them stuck his tongue out at him, would he like that?

Good job by Nathan Lane, but it's hard to beat the acting of Monty Woolley.....
I happen to know all that.
And I think Nathan's interpretation is a lot more interesting.
@tennesseeangel12 Fancy seeing you here, eh, Reia? ^^
That is an added line by Nathan Lane. Just like "You know where."
i am a choir boy
I actually thought Jean Smart was great in the role of Lorraine. She really nailed that role.

Nathan Lane is pretty good... but not nearly as good as Monty Wooley was.
