“My great Aunt Jennifer ate a whole box of candy every day of her life- she lived to be 102 and when she’d been dead 3 days she looked better than you do NOW.” ICONIC.
Monty Woolley, he was so eloquent even when he was ill tempered and each and every word so precise and buttery! While Bette Davis was developing character, in time she could hold a candle to Monty Woolley word for word and temper for temper.
This movie was hilarious.A treadmill of entertainment.Great acting writing and depiction of posh lifestyle.Jimmy Durante playing the piano while playing with words was superb originality. This ranks with 'Its a Wonderful Life'...classic in every sense!
My favourite Yuletide film - you can't help admiring people who are that rude and get away with it. My favourite lines are directed at Bette Davis: "Listen, repulsive..." and "This aging debutante, Mr. Jefferson I retain in my employ only because she is the sole support of her two-headed brother."
This year, my brother and I have resolved to randomly insert the phrase “shut your nasty little face” into conversation while visiting our mom this Christmas.
Wow! That’s great trivia. I cannot imagine the movie with debonair and charming Grant playing the Whiteside character. Although after watching Penny Serenade (the most un-Cary Grant of Cary Grant movies), I would have enjoyed seeing him play characters with more range. C’est la vie!
When compared to the kind, learned, but professionally frustrated history professor in The Bishops Wife I'd say Sheridan Whiteside had a wonderful range. Thank you for this humorous insight.
He is based on a real persin, Alexander Wolcott, a member of the Algonquin Round Table in the '20s. The other members could be just as caustic. Banjo was based on Harpo Marx. He and Wolcott were good friends. Their cynicism is born from the horror of WWI. Gertrude Stein called them "The Lost Generation".
@@bovnycccoperalover3579 ☘️ Could you recommend any particular books that would cover the effects of WWI on things such as the entertainment industry? That's something I've never heard about before, and loving these characters so much, like Harpo and Jimmy and all, it would be a chance to see a bit more of what made them tick.
@@101Volts 🌿 I just watched this "compilation of insults" again and have come to the conclusion that most of the writers of the original "Frasier" series were big fans of these old movies. The insults that flew back and forth between Frasier and Niles, Lilith, Marty, Roz and Daphne were in the same style...as when an upset Niles waiting for a "much needed" Brandy asked how it was coming...by St. Bernard?!!
Oh my word - I have never heard of this delightful film! Do you have any idea where I could find it for purchase? I am having the worst time doing so! (Also, your compilation is brilliant!)
Thanks Dan ! Great comedy based on understanding of Human Nature - cracking dialogue and performances from all . On a par with Sheridan's : the Rivals and School for Scandal . And they set the bar pretty high . Not sure if anyone other than Monty Woolley could have pulled it off though ?
We should remake this movie and use the man who got arrested and told the police " What is the Charge ? Eating a meal ? A SUCCULENT Chinese meal ? " ......muwaaaahh
You missed a good one: “Ms Preen where do you hide yourself?” “Mr Whiteside I can only be in one place at a time.” “Well that’s very fortunate for this community.”
Ohhhh man! I missed a bunch of good ones it seems. Since I published this video, HBO Max has released this in full HD! I might have to make another compilation 🤔
This still holds up wonderfully, and Nathan Lane was good in the stage version, but Kelsey Grammer would really knock it out of the park as Sheridan Whiteside. Time for a remake!
Merry Christmas everybody!
“My great Aunt Jennifer ate a whole box of candy every day of her life- she lived to be 102 and when she’d been dead 3 days she looked better than you do NOW.” ICONIC.
😂
"Sit down, gentlemen, this isn't anybody."
Damn 🤣
"Sit down, gentlemen. This isn't anybody." I fucking DIED!!!!!! 😅😅😅😅
His candy quote is the best insult. I want to remember that one when people give me crap about what snacks I like.
I have it memorized simply because of how cutting it is
You’re only allowed to do this if you have a similar bmi to him
Monty Woolley, he was so eloquent even when he was ill tempered and each and every word so precise and buttery! While Bette Davis was developing character, in time she could hold a candle to Monty Woolley word for word and temper for temper.
3:11 I love how he says "Operator".
You missed the best one, when Nurse Preen tells Mr. Whiteside she is quitting. Fantastic!
Sheridan Whiteside: The world’s biggest troll 😈
Not growing up in New York City living near the Greenwich village he wasn't! LoL😂
I was getting plenty of Stewie vibes from him.
I love this actor! He and his many insults are welcomed Hallmarks in my home every year for Christmas! 🎄
This movie was hilarious.A treadmill of entertainment.Great acting writing and depiction of posh lifestyle.Jimmy Durante playing the piano while playing with words was superb originality. This ranks with 'Its a Wonderful Life'...classic in every sense!
I mean Jimmy Durante was a jazz pianist back in the 20s
I got to play Mr. Whiteside when my highschool did this movie as our winter show…being able to throw insults left and right was so much fun!
“Sit down gentleman, this is nobody”.
😂
Monty Woolley was hilarious in this!
This is one of my favorite movies!! Never gets old!!

This movie deserves to be on the list of excellent Christmas movies.

To whomever posted this : if you are young than you know real talent! I commend you!!
Thank you very much Lynn, good comedy has no expiration date!
Priceless! Thanks for posting!
Fabulous job darling, splendid! I use the line about the 102 yo. dead great-aunt every time someone tells me to stop drinking.
Merry Christmas to me ! discovered this great movie this year. most funny movie ever !
Believe it or not, Cary Grant was almost cast as Sheridan. Bette Davis wanted John Barrymore. Fortunately, they went with Monty Woolley.
Wow! That’s great trivia. I cannot imagine the movie with debonair and charming Grant playing the Whiteside character. Although after watching Penny Serenade (the most un-Cary Grant of Cary Grant movies), I would have enjoyed seeing him play characters with more range. C’est la vie!
The Godfather of shade!
YES!
I LOVE this movie!!! I am waiting for it again on TCM ..."Miss Preen!!" lol
Pure absolutely pure genius.
What a wonderful movie. I've always wanted to be like this.
Love this movie!
Whiteside. Is basically like an evil Santa Claus I mean, he even has the beard that Santa Claus has
2:55 had me laughing a lot as a kid and I had no idea why.
Maybe the way he said that line made you laugh
When compared to the kind, learned, but professionally frustrated history professor in The Bishops Wife I'd say Sheridan Whiteside had a wonderful range. Thank you for this humorous insight.
3:08 my favourite 🤣
Man after my own heart. Bless!
Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
You are very welcome! This is one of the funniest movies of all time, and I've always wanted to make this. Glad that someone else appreciates it!
@@fybae Oh, man; line-for-line, is there a better film? I shared this on Twitter, too and used @danaltuz. Hope that's cool.
Not a problem!

@@diananutt1517 I'm not the person you asked, but that does sound like an interesting study if such a book exists.

This is just INCREDIBLE LOL. One of my new role models.
Beautiful!!
One of my favorites, which wasn't listed (and I'm paraphrasing):
"Is there any whale blubber in this town?"
The doctor comes in.
Exasperated "Oh yes"

"You have the touch of a love starved cobra." lol
Speaks like a theatre actor rather than a film actor, which is logical.
He did this character on Broadway Monty Woolley

I came here for 1:34
I loved this movie!!!!
CHEERS 🥂🍾🍻🍺
Is it me does Monty Woolley look like Santa Claus?
This Man is EPICALLY AMAZING 😂😂😂😂😂❤
One of Durante’s best films
Stewie from Family Guy
1:32 The best one
My favorite Sheridan Whiteside line: “Is there a man of the world who suffers as I do from the gross inadequacies of the human race.”
“You have the touch of a love starved cobra!”
Is Stewie Griffin inspired from him?
Literally thought this!!!!
@@magau3698 great minds think alike
I can definitely reflections of Stewie Griffin in Monty Woolley’s performance here
Todays' movies just don't measure up to the past. No explosions, no F words.

The original Karen that we could actually like and admire for his honesty 😂
Was this movie actually a comedy or was it just comedy gold on accident??
😂
This still holds up wonderfully, and Nathan Lane was good in the stage version, but Kelsey Grammer would really knock it out of the park as Sheridan Whiteside. Time for a remake!
Nah... Hugh Laurie. Man was practically born for it.
No Kelsey is a bore.
This is the funniest goddamn thing ever!!
Aspirations.
Stewie Griffith, all growed up.
Certainly a rather opinionated fellow.
He sounds like Stewie from Family Guy.
I think Seth MacFarlane watched this film when coming up with the voice of Stewie
What a horribly nasty man; these "jokes" are not funny at all. Glad to see this compilation of some of his insults so as not to try the whole movie.
Insult comedy: High Camp, v v gay...really not amusing at all.
You are a very stupid person.
Is it me does Monty Woolley look like Santa Claus?
