This is a great role for Nathan Lane. It lets him go over the top and then turn on a dime into serious emotion.

Im shocked this play doesnt get more attention now a days. I only just found it from looking for Nathan's stage work and the story is absolutely heartbreaking and compelling, but coated in lovely comedy. I wish people would notice it now, although I would only tolerate a retelling if Nathan were still the lead, and perhaps creative director. I would hate it to fall into the wrong hands

I was lucky enough to see this is NY. But this version is so well shot - you truly see the nuance. Great play. Terrific performances.

I'd seen a reference to the show years ago, but not the play itself. A treat worth the wait! It's a poignant lesson in Gay History about what life was like for us before Stonewall. How did they so bravely endure so much for so long? Glad I was born when I was.

    Whooo, Love it, 5/5.
Nathan Lane is a fantastic actor, he's so awesome in every genre he plays (Iceman Cometh, The Birdcage, Mouse Hunt, The Nance, People V OJ Simpson, City Of Angels).
Is so Underrated in Hollywood (movie or tv show), shame Hollywood, shame.

This story could easily have been about Ned. In many ways he represents the future for gay men and women - he doesn't see any reason he can't have what other people want and refuses to apologize for who he is. But this story is about Chauncey, about the person who can't overcome the hate and repression around him. That is what tragedy is for - to shine a light on the people who don't win, who might be forgotten otherwise.

It was in many ways NED’S story, and I so enjoyed the
performance and emotion of the brilliant and insightful portrayal
of what life was like for those gentleman back then. I wrote a
song …”BEAUTIFUL MAN” that speaks about the need to stay
Discrete especially for gay celebrities, who if “OUTED” could
end their careers!… “WE KNEW WE’D NEVER FIND COMPASSION,
COMING OUT, WAS NOT IN FASHION”
I’m so happy I saw this production this afternoon … It made my
      day … 😍♥️🎭

Thank god it is rewatchable here on youtube. There are so many fine jokes in the text that is nearly impossible to get the whole play by just watching it once. For it‘s the best performance I‘ve seen from Nathan Lane so far. He is far away from any efemminated gay cliche‘, and his acting is so elegant, and witty and snappy I can‘t get enough of it. Unbelievable how variable the set moves in this tiny theatre. Thanks for uploading!!!!

I was fortunate enough to see the original production in NYC and greatly appreciate the presentation and preservation of this performance. Within a few short years, burlesque went from family entertainment to strippers. From personal knowledge, my father-in-law and many of his 15 year old friends, would skip school (as often as they could afford), to go the the burlesque theatres where they were frequently approached by men who wanted satisfaction under their newspapers. Activities were not limited to the balcony.
It is a pity we are such a prudish culture that has to demonize anyone who is not in their image of a morally perfect society. We are much the worse for it. Carol J Brown

American burlesque was never family entertainment. It came to life in the mid-to late-1800s, in opposition to the strict rules of conduct governing vaudeville and legitimate theatre. It was characterized by scanty costuming, broad humour, suggestive dialogue and staging, and short comic routines--often performed "in one" meaning in front of the curtain.

BRILLIANT … Seeing it up close today was even more enlightening then when
I saw it years ago and I absolutely loved it all over again! BRAVO…
It’s relevant today in our political climate, and deserves other productions !
Nathan as always delivers ! Douglas Carter Bean, a magnificent play,
meaningful and an accurate glimpse back to a most intolerant world *
We have come so far… 🎭♥️Or have we ?

A great production that should have received greater attention. Perhaps there are a few too many burlesque sequences but it’s still a witty and important statement. The leads are all very strong and the direction and staging highly effective.

This is what is meant by a _tour de force._ Every nuance was laughably, heartbreakingly pitch perfect.
It is wonderful that in today’s world we have so many more options as alphabetical people, but at the same time, the shifting political climate and repressive ballot initiatives I see around me make me feel that the clock may be in danger of circling backwards. It takes no subtlety nor cleverness to see the risk in that, nor in how the self-ridicule of the Nance cast a shadow over Chauncey’s own self-perceptions and so, opportunities, both personal and professional. That latter is the actual stated reason that, after so much incredible success, Hannah Gadsby decided to re-tool, or even quit, rather than continue in that vein.
We have been telling the world truly that love is love is love. But as we see here, even genuine and professed true love means very little without self-love.
My proud and grateful admiration to our historical forebears … to all those who went before us. Thank you for, even in the face of pain and personal tragedy, breaking the old molds to bring us into more affirming lives - into a world where love does dare to speak its name, and where, gratefully and at last, “Hi!” can be, simply, “Hi!”
