I love so much finding reactors that may not have UTA's jam in their wheelhouse, yet they can't help but love their songs and see the talent. Happy that you heard the elements that separate them from other metal bands - the icing on the cake is that this song kicks off a 2 album story told by each song on the albums - and... their sound changes up on the next album to fit the story.... Hope you react to more UTA.
To be honest, I don't even like to call UTA a power metal band. You can hear the power metal "base" but they pull from other genres, and bring an added heaviness and thrash that you don't typically hear in power metal. As you mentioned, the guitarists don't solo in the typical power metal style, and I hear more of a jazz/blues influence mixed in, which keeps the solos more grounded and melodic rather than an out of context shred fest. I like to label them as Final Boss Metal haha Here's a vague breakdown to give you a bit of context behind this songs lyrics and the album it's from - Apex(2017). This is a concept album telling a story track by track about an Immortal being. This is the opening song on the album. It is sung from the Immortals perspective(not all the tracks are), about being awoken in his mountain hollow from a 1000 year sleep. As a covenant of birth, the immortal must do the bidding of whoever awakens him. As the immortal begins his journey, he is led by a shadow of a falcon flying above(track 2 Shadow Guide). you find out that The Matriarch(which is played by the male vocalist in this song Awakening) was the one to awaken him. She wants him to find her four sons, so she can kill them and perform a blood ritual to gain immortality for herself(pretty dark haha), and his journey to find them. Each son has their own song about them on the album. The closing song Apex, is about the immortal going back to sleep in his mountain and it is a phenomenally written song. Their new JUNO award winning album for best Hard Rock Metal album of 2020 "Abyss", which came out in August 2020, is a continuation of this story, and on track 2(titled Abyss like the album) the immortal has awoken on a spaceship, confused as hell, wondering why he's not in his mountain but in space. I won't go into the rest of the album. Cleanse The Bloodlines is a great choice for your next listen from the same album as Awakening, or go to their previous album(not part of the above mentioned storyline) and check out Tonight We Ride. So "Abyss" is my fav, a lot like this one, then "Tonight We Ride", also the folk song cover of "Northwest Passage" totally different but FIRE! Oh and the Vocal layering is Brittney doing what she calls the "Brittney Choir".
"Holy sheeeit!" 😂😂😂 welcome to Unleash the Archers. Brittney Slayes is her name. Awakening opens the Apex album and the story of the Immortal - the concept for this album and the next one, Abyss. 'Epic' is an an overused term in power metal, but in this case it fits the two-album story. I only gets better from here. Brittney an Andrew Kingsley (guitarist w red hair) did most of the writing. Last year they won a Juno award for Abyss.
This song is just the first of a saga the spans 2 entire albums. Epic would be a fitting description. The 2nd album doesn't have this bassist (with a unique playing style) on it. However, it it still just as amazing. The fantasy metal story alone is worth the listening.

Since I saw this video, I've tried to play bass in that gentle kind of stroking technique but it's too weird. I've never seen anyone play like that.
