Interesting detail about Sam's theme song (The Only Thing I Know For Real) is that his is the only one out of the Winds of Destruction that has lyrics right off the bat instead of introducing the lyrics in the second phase. Instead, the lyrics actually fade out when you disarm him and he fights you barehanded.
@@rove8620 **"The only one out of the winds of destruction"** Armstrong is not even working for the Desperado, imagine being considered a Wind of Destruction. He also doesn't have a Wind name like Minuano or Monsoon.
I believe it's because you already fought him in a 'first phase' during the intro. During that 'fight' The Only Thing I Know For Real played with no lyrics already.
The technical term for Raiden is a Cyborg-ninja. You mentioned both cyborg and ninja independently of each other during your discussion so it checks out
15:10 The gun sounds are because Sam's sword has some gun parts on it along with a trigger, allowing him to shoot the sword out with the same amount of force as a gun, letting him perform a bullet-speed slash
I once saw mentioned that the boss fight with Sundowner (Red Sun) is framed a lot like a wrestling match. The big group "rah" sound in the song kinda fits that.
Red Sun leans more heavily into the metal aspects because as you said, that facet of the OST represents humanity, and the character the song is for strongly embraces what he believes is the core nature of humanity. So in his mind, he's more human than anyone else you encounter, resulting in the dubstep/EDM taking more of a back seat in this track.
4:53 yes I've always loved this part, it's almost like a Classical Music piano piece that just plays while the rest of the song goes completely nuts around it.
I was happy at you interpreting the hybrid nature of the songs as a mix of organic and metal sounds - like Raiden. But since the bosses are also cyborgs these themes not only have that but also their struggles and ideologies.
you should listen to the War Still Rages Within it plays during the end credits so it not as hard and takes it's time to build up and i think it's pretty underrated compared to the other songs because of how different it is
I love this OST and its songs but despite being familiar with these songs you still managed to point out things with these 3 songs I had not noticed before, very grateful for this since it only helps me appreciated these songs even more! your expertise is so expansive and I love to hear you talk music also the little bits you played of each song are so good and makes me hope that you one day cover them but for now I will wait patiently while enjoying all this good content!
Iirc, the composer of the soundtrack Jamie Christopherson was much more used to doing epic/grand/ochestral music for films and games before he was asked to do Metal Gear, and had to adapt to the speed/heavy metal genre, which then fused into the soundtrack of this game, you can definitely hear the influence of his previous work.
I mean modern metal is often referred to as contemporary classical music, and classical/metal mixes always sound AMAZING, so it's no surprise that Jamie killed it.
I just love how MGS Rising is resurfacing on internet after all those years!! Maybe this will be a spark for a Remaster or a Remake or even better! A Sequel!!!
i feel like those sounds from red sun, the whob sounds are probably helicopters sense in the boss fight. he has a helicopter helping him fight raiden, but those more audible whops are what I consider it being a more mechanical
Obviously we need another look at metal gear rising. There's still some good bangers like "It has to be this way", "My own master now", and "A stranger i remain"
Monsoon - seasonal winds of Asia- 🇰🇭 or anywhere else Mistral- cold weather in Algeria 🇩🇿 Sundowner - hot winds in Colorado Minuano - cold winds of Brazil 🇧🇷 Khamsin - Hot dried winds- aka The Desert Storm
I love these reactions. While people just listen to the songs and just react or bop their heads. You get into the nitty gritty technicals and even do those small playalongs with your violin thingy.
Normally I find the violin cut in doesn't add a lot to a song, it doesn't quite mesh well with the music, but this time it added SO MUCH to the songs. I think it's the fact that MGR has some samurai aesthetics to it, what with Jetstream Sam and mister "I'm fucken invincible" himself both taking heavily from the ronin warriors of feudal Japan, one being a lost and wandering soldier while the other is a bloodthirsty madman who desires only destruction. Your violin adds a lot of missing classical string that would help represent that older era of samurai films, which MGR possesses in its blood.

Cool thing about these songs, many of them only have the lyrical portions come in at set parts of the boss battles, with some even fading out and in as you battle them. For example, Only Thing I know has the lyrics fade out when you disarm him, then they come back in when he picks up the sword. To me, that's proof this song is direct HIS soundtrack, not Raidens (though the others are also similar of course). It's just cool that YOU are the boss battle here just as much as he is.
My suggestion is to listen to some of the songs from Ace Combat 7, it has a wonderful and expressive soundtrack, especially when the game progresses and in some of the DLCs, by far I'd love to see how you decompose this wonderful game's music
