The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Dino was the greatest. He had perfect timing and creative drum fills. With his jazz training, no one could touch him in the rock world. I love what I call his Copacabana-style finishes. RIP, Dino
Big influence
Absolutely
Dino! What style and energy. One in a million, but never again! RIP Paisan.
Dino was criminally overlooked in the drummer world.
The second of three appearances by this amazing group in 1967 (Ed must have loved them too!). A bittersweet video knowing that drummer Dino Danelli passed away just 7 months ago. He inspired me to learn how to play drums as a kid. Love these vintage rock appearances on Sullivan, Keep them coming!
Didn't know.
He was great!
Love the drummer
Dino had pizazz
I liked what he was wearing. It reminded me of the Joker costume that Jack Nicholson wore. 😊
Felix never gets recognized for his amazing vocal talent.
Much talent in them days before the agenda took over to control everything 🤡
We recognize Felix ! ❤
He did at the time.
yeah he sure puts alot of cool soulful emotions in his singing..i really like that
Only 4 beautiful musicians to make all that great music without all the gimmicks of bands today. Thus us when real music ruled the world. Thank u rascals for your talent.😊❤❤❤
Wow! Dino is the best example of what a drummer can do for a band. More so than Ringo or Charlie, who are both really good.
Have you ever seen anybody look cooler playing the drums. 60s music was the best.
Felix Cavaliere simultaneously, singing, playing the Hammond B3 and playing bass pedals with his feet!!!
Linda Mc Cartney always said the Rascals were the best American Rock Band. I concur.
Musicians actually playing their instruments and singing their as*** off . . . fantastic!
They're obviously playing and singing Live...BUT...Where are the HORNS coming from??
@@beebob7772 Studio orchestra
You have to admire Felix Cavaliere's versatility. He's simultaneously playing the melody on his organ keyboard, the bass line on his pedals and providing a soulful lead vocal. Like the Doors, the Rascals did not have a group member on electric bass.
Thank you for such interesting information. 🤗
The 60s Geddy Lee!
They came to El Paso Texas & they did have a bass player behind the scenes. Can't remember the year, I was in highschool.
Not to take anything away from Felix's brilliance...he was capable of doing that, and he could do it with amazing fluency...but I don't think he's doing it in this particular clip... There's obviously a horn section off stage, and I'm guessing probably also a bass player... I'm also not certain Gene's guitar is live, because there's no evidence of an amplifier... Drums and vocals clearly are...
@@raphaelmann - the amplifiers were almost always off to the side of the stage on the Sullivan show - never seen.
Mr. Danelli was also my inspiration to drum. I really thought he never got the praise he should have. What a performer ❤
liberty DeVito also said he was inspired by him ..
Likewise, I had just started drumming in a garage band when I got to see these guys in 1967. Being an amateur, I immediately sought out a professional jazz drummer to teach me because I knew that Dino was using jazz chops in his playing. What a true inspiration. Pure class. His showmanship was much better in person and his character was always modest. His sticks spoke for him.
Rest in peace, Dino. You made my life better.
How can i be sure was one of the greatest songs ever
Awesome performers The Rascals had everything going on. They were extremely talented, great songs,Felix at the Hammond organ suberb playing bass lines with his feet and incomparable voice, Gene with his Gibson guitar and on harmonica, Eddie another great singer and back up voice and the great Dino Danelli ( R.I.P.) second to none on his Ludwig kit.
I saw The Rascals in a tiny venue called Hiway Inn in Roosevelt (Long Island), New York, sometime in the mid-60s or so. This was before they became popular and, even then, they were outstanding--- and still are. So, original, so musically forward-looking, so melodious and vibrant, The Rascals are a national treasure--- in every sense of the word.
This also shows the versatility and talent of Ed Sullivan's studio orchestra playing a "rock" song.
I wondered where the horns and harp came from.
They understood the assignment!
I was thinking that too, how they were doing such a great job, true to the studio version and everything!
Great band, and outstanding drummer, Dino Dinelli. RIP Dino.
DD was the best drummer in that era. He made it look so easy rip
Everything about this performance is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Especially Mr. Dino on the drums....💥💥💥💥
Fabulous performances. They were so Young! RIP Dino Danelli (who looks like Paul McCartney here).
What a group! Can't think of 1 bad song from them!
Thank you Steven Van Zandt for putting them back out here for us. They played the Finger Lakes Region years ago. We brought our kids. Drove back home in a blizzard. RIP Dino.
Saw them live twice in my hometown in the '60's. Always thought they were underappreciated.
This is ironic. I saw them twice, also - first time when I was 16 and a drummer in a garage band. Then I saw them again when I was 20. I saw CTA in 1969 when they opened for Jimi Hendrix (Jimi chose them because he actually admitted to Terry Kath that he thought Terry was a better guitarist than he was (this is in a documentary on Terry). Sad that Terry and Jimi both died so young, but I digress.
The important thing to note is that the Young Rascals aka Rascals were fantastic musicians and warm human beings. Still miss the group and I'm so sad that Dino is gone.
Dino taught Keith Moon how to twirl the sticks...no b.s. Dino right there with Moonie as THE BEST rock 'n roll drummer all time...Buddy Rich....still the KING!
Did you know that Dino learned from Gene Kruppa and Buddy Rich while Dino lived above the Cafe Metropole in NYC?
Awesome song, I was sixteen years old when this song hit the airwaves....Crank up the volume on the AM radio in the car...With my girlfriend...Best years ever.. A decade long gone.
Agreed
I too am remembering since I too was from 51
I was 11! A straight A rising sixth grader!
Underrated band. Never really got the credit they deserved.
HUH???? Hit albums Hit 45's big touring act. got inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame.
I agree ... Their 'Time Piece' 33 1/3 album was my favorite 👍
I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE SEEN THEM WITH THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPIERANCE AT THE SCHAEFER MUSIC FESTIVAL IN CENTRAL PARK ON 7/5/67
❤😮,DINO WOULD BE PLAYING AND ALL OF A SUDDEN HE WOULD FLING HIS DRUM 🥁 STICKS OUT INTO THE AUDIENCE AT SUCH A FAST PACE THAT YOU WOULDN'T HAVE NOTICED IT IF YOU DIDN'T SEE PEOPLE TRYING TO TRY TO GET THE STICKS.
Ladies and Gentlemen! Paul McCartney on drums! Ha! But seriously, Dino Danelli is a LOAD of fun to watch. And he, Like Keith Moon of The Who, knew he had a part to play as far as showmanship and DRIVING the band is concerned. A great band all the way around, IMHO.
are you kidding me? LIVE. this is one of the best things on the whole site. playing at this level is like pulling a 747 off the ground with your teeth.
talk about hooks! now I remember why I played TIME PEACE over and over again.
A very talented group that should have got more recognition.
They did so many great songs. This happens to be my favorite. And glad they are identified as The YOUNG Rascals, not the Rascals!
I saw them in 68. They warmed up for Chicago. My first concert and it was fantastic! It was cool growing up with this on the radio. 👍🤠
@crevnoid: I find it hard to believe that the band "Chicago" had The Rascals warming up for it in 1968. The Rascals were an established band at that time. The group "Chicago" had not even released its first album in 1968. Chicago didn't release its first album until 1969 - and had just shortly before then shortened its name to "Chicago" from "Chicago Transit Authority." I would like to know where you saw The Rascals warming up for Chicago in 1968.
A fun clip to see, with Dino Danelli demonstrating his Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich-inspired flair.
.. and Cozy Cole
Love to watch Dino finish. He was the best!
such an incredible band. every one of their songs are timeless and bring back only the fondest memories of the amazing 1960's
Fantastic! Always good to see and hear them! R.I.P., Dino.
Saw Felix perform at a local theater several years ago. Still had that soulful touch. Dino looks like a young Paul McCartney.
I miss the outrageous splashy colors of the 60s! Once color TV took off, so did the fashions of the stars and the rest of us!
This started my love for Felix Cavaliere to this day! I remember this day, I was only 16 years old, and his voice just touched my heart! I have the original 45 of this song! Peace & Love ❤
I had a record album age 12 in 1968.I love their songs
The orchestra is too loud.
You have to admire that they still sound great. No pitch control on anyone. All live. All them……. Except for the stag band who always did there best. The Rascals were big and they were the shinning stars of the 60s. They were magic. I use to look forward to Ed saying: “and for the kiddies………….” I was about 12….then……I am 68.
@@funathome123and now for all you youngsters!
They played at my senior prom!
I know it wasn't competitive, art being art, 60's music at it's zenith. But here's to one of at least 4 American music acts to give The Beatles a run for their money!
Listeners of that era benefitted from so many great acts. The Billboard Pop Charts will bear out that the Liverpool group were consistent with fans. I'd like to add The Temptations, The Beach Boys, Frankie Vallie & The Four Seasons.... and this great group performing on The Ed Sullivan Show. The pride of Pelham, New York. And who got their start gigging on Long Island in 1965... THE YOUNG RASCALS!❤
they got their start playing the Choo Choo club in Jersey
@@recordguy4321 Point taken. Just thought I remembered a late 80's interview with Felix Cavalleri stating that he and the band did some gigs out on Long Island, too.
I also recall Frankie Valli once stating that his group used to be called the Four Lovers. But the group changed their name to Four Seasons in honor of a bowling alley they used to frequent.
The ChooChoo Club on Passaic St. in GARFIELD, NJ. I was there, but was only a little 10yr old boy. I lived in LODI and for a whole week in an Abandoned store right across the street from me they rehearsed every day. I'll never forget.
@@bobwickes1380 very cool! Dino was the MAN!
Maybe they were out there in NY but they were Jersey Boys just like Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons.
Super star dom period. Greatness
This drummer SWINGS.
Magnificent Masterpiece from Master Musicians, fellow paisines, 100% Italian, fan of Felix, Dino, Gene and Eddie for 60 years
Dino was such a fantastic drummer!
Dino died last year😞🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿 🥁
Dino! Gene! Felix! Eddie! O yeah.
The Great Dino Danelli on Drums….
Dino, Dino, Dino................................... awesome!
Damn, love this song... and what a performance! Plus all the horns (though overpowering in this sound mix)... and the harp, even. Great stuff!
They were in ecstasy back then.
BRAVO!!!
Thanks for posting. Now THAT was something to see! Playing live with the live orchestra behind them. Very cool (this song is just loverly)! Love me some Rascals! ❤☮🌎
Ooooh!Cant wait for this one..love this hit early in the band's career.
This is great! But I'm confused about one thing... Where did the horns in the song come from? Were they pre-recorded and then inserted? 😊
RIP Dino. Thank you for the music.
Ed Sullivan exposed so many great artists to the general public. This is a guy who looked like he watched Lawrence Welk on repeat but still took great risks on his show (see The Doors). Bandstand and Soul Train were similar but their artists were exactly what we expected.
This takes me back to a much better time for our country. What a blast it was. Thanks for posting this.
you mean during the vietnam war and race riots?
@@gerrydooley951 yep and it was better then today.
@@gerrydooley951 good point, but it was still a hell of a lot better then today’s world
@@Walt222 not really, people are spoiled, we have everything at our fingertips and people are still unhappy, Maybe it's time to look inward and end our materialism, and I'm just as bad as the next guy
No lip syncing here, nice
Ed Sullivan preferred to have his acts perform live. A lot of times they'll have the vocals live performing to a backing track. One example was when Bee Gees did "Words" - Interestingly, Ed introduced the group but highlighted Barry for the vocals. Another was when Paul Revere and the Raiders did their only Ed appearance. They used backing tracks because they had just put in Freddy Weller at guitar that night (Paul was mad because Drake Levin was leaving the group and taking Fang and Smitty with him to form the group Brotherhood and barred him from performing.) The guy who was supposed to hit the switch on the backing track was late, making Ed mad because the group was delayed. Another time was when Lovin Spoonful sang "Do You Believe in Magic?" and I believe only John's vocal was live because they were doing special effects (Ed mentioned that the audience needed to watch the monitors to enjoy the performance)
Dino was dynamite.
What a terrific performance !
Fantastic clip. Thanks. :- )
As a 14 year old I thought they were Puerto Rican 😂😂😂😂
My favorite Rascals song. Thanks for sharing. Saw Felix as part of the Hippiefest Tour a few years ago at the Minnesota Zoo.
IF MUSIC IS THE FOOD OF LOVE PLAY ON RASCALS❤
My favorite Rascals song.
Still have this album grooving this is my favorite song on the album
Who agrees Dino could have been twins with Paul McCartney!
Great performance ! Thanks for sharing, and have a nice day.
Nostalgia at its finest
Would have been great if the network orchestra hadn't played so loud. Great song.
Dino one of the most underrated drummers ever, Felix with the raspy voice made for rock -n-roll just awesome!
Great song and Dino "closing the door" at the end only makes it more special!
Every one loves dino
WHAT CAN BE SAID? WOW!!!
RIP Dino. 🌹
Greetings from NorCal. Being “ Gifted with age” as my former Irish priest father O’Reilly once said, I remember Ed Sullivan and this group. I like another group, Chicago, who used horns and perhaps their horn section did this as a side job. Yes their drummer Dino was very good as was the drummer Danny for Chicago. They both used the pencil grip on the sticks, now most drummers use the overhand grip if they even have live drummers because a lot of them use drum machines. I prefer live drummers and no auto tune on vocals, but I’m old school.
sorry.. no such drum grip terms as "pencil" or "overhand" grip - Proper stick grip techniques are "traditional" & "match" grips.
If you appreciate Chicago as I have please search LEONID AND FRIENDS they are featured on UA-cam and have an excellent Channel. They play Chicago better than Chicago. They are all Ukrainian and Russians.
I love Dino and the Rascals but Danny Seraphine was in a whole other class, if he played on nothing other than Beginnings, he'd still be world renowned!
Loved this band saw them 2x was so honored when Eddy played conga on my album in 1974! Thank you Eddy!
I just heard this on my local public radio. I hadn’t heard it for a long, long time and like so many other great songs had drifted into my growing file of fading memories. All I can say, what a great sound and song.
The Rascals never disappointed!
So glad I got to see them live, great band!
I was lucky to see them in concert
They were awesome
Felix is such an handsome guy, who can also sing with the best of them.
Such a great group! Hit after hit!
Im blown away. Lookin back now.
Love these guys. My parents listened to them and I am a forever fan. Felix has an awesome voice. One of my favorite singers.
Fantastic group with many back-to-back singles I really miss them
felix was so awesome
Comprei um box deles com 5 Cds , sensacional !
Felix was an amazing artist
Dino on fire.
Great Singing Group especially the Lead Singer, he's very good and very handsome !!!! Love this Song !!!!!
fucking classic love live versions
Excellent performance 👏 . I always loved this group! Thank you for sharing this. God Bless You and stay safe
The day before this awesome appearance was the 3rd of June another sleepy dusky delta day…
Great video. I'm alwasy sturck, however, by the bad acoustics on Ed Sullivan.
Dino was the best drummer in the rock and roll era. He could have given the drummers in the big band era a run for their money.
Right. Because he learned from Gene Kruppa and Buddy Rich at Cafe Metropole. It shows.
@@ronaldbarnes3327 I didn't know that. Thank you.
