  • This video is the start of a new series exploring chemical release agents and their use. Today I was just focusing on seeing how easy it is to use the release agent, how well it releases and how it compares to what I normally use.
Todays victim, I mean test subject, is Stoner E497 Thermoset mould release. I chose it because I could buy it in a simple aerosol can for around $27AUD, rather than handing a pineapple over for other brands.
    TL;DW: The release releases!
Check out my website, if you have any projects you want help on hit me up and we'll see what we can do. www.chapmaneng.com
As always when doing this kind of work, make sure that you use appropriate PPE, store the chemicals properly (both in an absolute sense for your safety, as well as in accordance with your local laws and regulations) and be mindful of dust generation and removal.

Thanks for posting this kind of stuff, saves others of us from doing the work all over!

That's my aim. I couldn't find an answer about it from any other sources so I figured I'd post my own.
I have to check it's performance on paint (properly) and gel coat still.

I also found that the "automotive laquer" is just not suitable for composites! If you use polyesther resin, it will literally melt. I am now using 2k automotive clear coat to seal molds. Nothing else I have tried can come close to it! It creates a hard, impervious layer that can be sanded and polished, and it is compatible with every release system I have tried. Oh, and if you have an oven, you can bake your parts and then sand it in as little as 30 min.

Any updates on Your wing? Im still trying to figure out the best way to do it.

I'm going to call that motivation...
The carbon skin is on, I have to sand it (there were some small bubbles) and put a final capping layer on it for aesthetics. That's going to be the end if the next video, with endplates and mounts the video after.
I've just been lazy and working lots at my job that actually pays the bills...
I've also been working on another project which I'll have a video up for this week (a short one).
I'll take this as motivation to get back to the wing.

"I read the instructions", I'm starting to worry about you now :P
The spray is interesting, where did you pick it up from?

Well I wanted it to work.... Fat lot of good that did for me. To be fair though, my day job is all about policy and work procedures so I should be used to reading the instructions...
I picked it up from trojan fibreglass, play with carbon has some stuff as well, but that's a bit more expensive

you cant paint surfaces you will glass over without sealing them, it always bleeds through with the resin

Using a glass mirror is not the best surface, it’s so smooth, anything will release. This experiment should be on a fibreglass mould, as that is the usual surface used as a mould.

You are right. I was honestly just trying to learn how to spray it and figured I'd record it at the same time.

For me its the opposite, I want to epoxy against a very flat surface with high accuracy.
