I've done a lot of fiberglass repair work but have never gotten into making molds or casting parts. Just recently I started a new project build that will require me to make a battery box for an eBike project and decided it was time I learned. Watching your videos, they have helped quite a bit. The way you lay your glass is exactly how I've been doing it for over 30 years, by tearing out sections of mat not cutting it. Agree on resin as well, the stuff at Home Depot is junk. Wish I had some pictures of repair work I used to do on NASCAR southwest tour car bodies. Just as strong, flexable and difficult to tell where the repair was made, without adding any additional weight. I'll make sure to do a video of my project.

I had to use some cheap resin in a pinch yesterday . The stuff ordered was damaged in shipping and what a difference , You are so right the stuff was thick as molasses and just would not soak into the cloth. It is definitely worth spending a little extra money .
Actully, the QUALITY RESIN is Cheaper or the same price as the garbage stuff....you just have to order the good stuff while junk stuff is sitting on the shelf .

PVA is also used to cover cars, cycles or anything that is shipped from over seas in storage containers, stuff that can be contaminated by the Sea Air ..... Another type of PVA is used to protect new Wide White Wall tires, it keeps them from getting dirty!
A couple of stupid questions- Did the PVA come off with it or is the PVA still on the board? If it is, could a second application be done and come off as easily? Finally, will epoxy stick to PVA? The demonstration of wetting out of the different resins was very convincing as to brand difference. Thanks.
I wonder if the booth coating or liquid mask is a similar product. Isn't PVA water soluble as well? Either way, peel it or wash it off and you have a solution to the problem of paint sticking to the booth walls. Home run!
I've done a little bit of gel coat repair on boats and used it for sealing off the repair so it can cure.. At least that's how I learned to do them. Then just wet sand and buff and the orange peel and PVA are gone.

Timothé Stehlin ....YES..... let each coat of PVA dry before adding the next layer....... the first 4 layers should be MIST coats...... after that, get a littler heavier with each coat....WHEN you get good at it, your PVA will come out looking like a sheet of glass...... I recently started making moulds and tried PVA. Based on your experience vertical surfaces would only take light most coats or it will run? I can never get to the wet coats even after 7+ light mist coats. Trying to learn this crazy stuff.

+Timothé Stehlin With the little touch up gun , Spraying PVA...Im between 75 and 85 psi...depends on humidity and temp.....low temp & high humidity, Higher psi ........ Warm temp, lower humidity, lower psi....everthing else is in the middle
whatever factory tip came with the paint gun...60psi at the compressor in colder weather, 40 psi in warmer weather...25psi at the gun, youre basically spraying water.
How many layers of PVA would you need to spray to get the glassy effect on a mould? Say for making a carbon fiber part where the clear epoxy surface will come out of the mould glassy also and not need to be sanded etc ?
WELL....Real carbon fiber parts are not Glassy, they are dull....but SHOW carbon fiber parts like car hoods etc have a clear coat of epoxy resin or clear epoxy gelcoat first.....you let the clear dry before putting the carbon fiber layer in.....when you pull the part, it will look like glass...... you will need 2 or 3 MIST coats first, then you can lay down a heavy very wet coat.....it will dry to a high sheen
GasserGlass Thanks! Putting down the first layer of epoxy thick and letting it dry does give it a nice deep look finish. I will also try using a clear coat paint to give it that deep look and see what happens.
. you have helped me in the past with a few questions .I make concrete statuary molds and last night i was doing some fiberglass . the glass has to be done with the part standing upright .I did one side of the part ,Turned it around and did the other side ,when i was done i turned the part back around to look at the completed piece and while i was working on other side all the resin ran down and out of the cloth. I got the resin from fiberglass site.com as you suggest . am i maybe putting to much resin in the cloth ? Thanks for any help you can give.
Im thinking you made it to thick or to many coats at one time...... You should to one light coat and let it cure....dont be heavy on the resin.....and dont use to heavy of fiberglass....Id keep working the first time till it starts to cure and THEN turn to the other side....you can use a heat gun or hair dryer to help it cure when you're making concrete molds .................. OR?................ You didn't shake the can up very well and used the water like part of the resin...... it does have to be shaken before using so the Binders can come up from the bottom of the can....Ive never had FIBERGLASSsite resin delaminate or have run out......

It may stick to the mold or the part....It just peels off regardless of what it sticks to.... its simply a PLASTIC lining between the two parts so the Resin wont stick to the Gelcoat

Its best to clean the gun after each use, the alcohol will slowly eat the inside of the cup and will grow funky stuff inside if not kept clean....However, I dont always clean up my PVA gun and keep PVA in it 24-7....I have to clean it out every few weeks as it glogs and I replace the gun twice a year too!

Yup, thats how it used to be done..... with today's designer gelcoats, there's no need to cover it with PVA for it to cure.
I've also sprayed it where you add a liquid wax additive to the final coat for curing

This may be a silly question but when I spray a mold with PVA and then glass over it does the PVA stay on the mold or is it going to stay on my part?
It may stick to the mold or the part....It just peels off regardless of what it sticks to.... its simply a PLASTIC lining between the two parts so the Resin wont stick to the Gelcoat

Thanks....Yes, thats one type of mold release agent... its normally used on new molds along with wax.... Its good stuff.
