The XDM is an updated XD with the only differences being in the grip frame. I own several XDs in 9, 40, and 45 and I find them to be still outstandingly designed and extremely reliable and rugged.

I have an XD40 Service Model 4 inch, that I bought new in 2002, 21 years ago. I was going to upgrade to the XDM 40, but I didn't feel there was much of an "upgrade" The trigger is identical, contrary to XDM "match trigger" BS. The barrel on the XDM is a little thicker, but accuracy is the same as the original. Both grips are slippery and require Talon Grips. Finally, I have always preferred the look of the original XD.

Missing 3 calibers that the XD-M still carries that the Echelon does not. IF they want to close down the XD-M line they will need to incorporate the missing calibers into the fold.

I started to go down that line of thought, as well as the many current configurations and sizes of the XD-M line but I thought it might get too convoluted if I did. But yes, that is a major reason I think the XD-M is probably a long way from moth-balls.

Found your review at random, it made me ponder...I've got an XDM I bought in 2008, have used as a truck gun, carry gun and now home defense accessible gun. No lights, no lasers, no optics. just pure function. Best polymer gun trigger from a factory gun I've owned. Fits like a bespoke creation, great value and 16 years reliable operation. Who could ask for more??

Personally.... I'll take the XDM over the Echelon any day. I think by now Springfield would have a variety of frame and slide sizes for the cogged Echelon. But no.... so with that... being a member of the Croatian brotherhood of the XD ill continue to shoot my XDM Elite.

I love the xdm. Upgrades could be made like the new optic mounting system the echelon has.
I don't like that the echelon does not have a metal guide rod. To me the xdm elite is the best out of the box pistol on the market at this time.

I can shoot an XDM better than any other 9mm I have owned, including a G17. I got a better than OEM pin to replace the one that can fail. Still trying to beat it though, VP9 may be the one.

Relevance depends on the person. If you have a firearm, train with it, use it, and take care of it then it’s relevant. Doesn’t matter if it’s twenty years old or the ‘latest, greatest, and shiniest’ firearm on the market

I love my XDM 40…had it for a while and always love to shoot it. Less practical because to me it seems more like a duty gun but it is so easy to shoot compared to my Sig p365 in terms of recoil. The barrel almost flows back into place for the next shot. Great gun.

Four months later, SA has discontinued all but the 4.5 inch XDM Elite in 9mm, and kept all of its 10mm variations. So glad I bought my XDM Elites long ago. And, yes, the original XD's in 9mm, 40 and 45 are still on the website. As for the Echelon; I have one. I like it, too.

Thank you for this video. The question of relevancy can be applied to any firearm that has been either upgraded and entered under a newer model #. I feel that the question of relevancy should be answered on any firearm being able to meet the original
purpose/ intended goal for which it was originally purchased. To your question of the XDM relevancy compared to the Echelon, just by the fact it has a grip safety, I say yes.
Now that I have said all the above, is it Springfield Armory’s intention of replacing the entire XDM lineup? Until they can get different grip frames to dealers, and their sales show a real demand for the Echelon, it might be a big risk.

    • @JustinOpinionChannel

As I mentioned in the video - I am certainly not "in the know" about any plans or lack thereof. I expect that no such plans currently exist, at least not on any short timeline. I think the XD-M line will be around for some time to come. Good point about the grip safety.

I would think even if the 9mm XDM ended up getting sunseted the 10mm pistol is one of the more popular 10mm Pistols on the market right now (especially the 3.8 incher which AFIK is really the only concealable 10mm pistol out there right now) and will probably stick around indefinitely unless they create an Eschelon variant to supersede it.

I haven't shot the Echelon but its really light weight which makes me suspicious about its snappiness. My favorite FS striker fired guns are the XDM and the M&P because they're on the heavier side and hence recoil management is heavenly. I have a Walther PDP and its annoyingly snappy and since the echelon weighs less than the PDP I suspect the recoil mgmt will be accordingly annoying.

The exception being with an over pressure cartridge or an out of battery detonation that damaged the firearm in some other way.
