Not all students fit your mold of what a classroom should look like. When you have kids who don't fit the mold, it is time to break the mold and change what we are doing.
I absolutely enjoyed this video. Everything you expressed from a new way of teaching to adjusting to what they need and even using Netflix. I homeschool my little ones and I have had to adjust and change the way I teach according to their personality and attention span. I have incorporated the magic school bus, history channel, little einsteins, baby first, and books on volcanoes, dinosaurs, tornadoes. I appreciate you so much for being so transparent and honest. You're such an inspiration. Thank you.
You have nailed this situation out, we teachers have to work on different ways to get to them and to make education in the classroom possible. Some days we prepare and plan for a great class and when we get to the classroom... no way, we have to find another path to get to the same destination. Thanks for sharing, you are not alone, this is a digital generation that responds to new teaching methods, new strategies, including love and care, that we as teachers have to come up with, I think that is why the most difficult students always come back
enjoyed this, I found one thing in life too when you are helping others it is important to take little vacations and to find time to renew myself reading a book (mental vacation) a creative thing like a craft for me etc.. :) thank you Tina :)
Thank you Tina and hang in there. I have always found that my most difficult students end up being my very favorite people. They stay in touch so I can see what a difference I have made in some of their lives. Breaks are important and I have also found the Love and Logic philosophy a great help in having the students solve the problems they are making.
+Carla Watts I couldn't agree more. I love when the students who gave me the most grief come back to see me years later. I always am so proud of what they have managed to achieve.
Thank you so much for sharing your insight. The last five minutes was especially helpful to me. This is only my 4th year of teaching, but it has been such a trying year with some very challenging students and coworkers as well. (Not to mention the constant stress of test scores and data...bla.) I definitely feel more encouraged to start back a work week after my Thanksgiving break. Thank you again!
This was very helpful. I can identify with your situation. This is my third year teaching and I have a very hard class. I have walked out of my classroom twice, with no intentions on coming back. This video has inspired me to identify what I need to change to make it better. Thanks!
+yadsia0426 Good luck. Teaching can be so rewarding and fun, and yet there are days where we question why we ever went into this profession. The changes I made this year have made a difference. I just had to figure out what these children needed from me.
1st few months gave been nightmare. I'm trying to keep positive / smile / breathe & sometimes pray. Nyc kids gave been tough. I too had to move math first thing. The only problem I have now is my late students. Most of my students would have been in SE a few yrs ago. Now their in my first grade class with 32 other students. Keep positive. Thanks for the video. It helps seeing other teachers in other parts of the country are in the same boat.
Thank you, Tina, for this good reminder of adapting in the classroom. I'm so glad I'm not the only one out there dealing with a tough class. My students are not bad; they are easily excitable and super talkative, highly competitive, and seem to have type A personalities! I continually tell them I can't wait to see what they're doing in 15 years!
Silent ball work in Danish classes too :-) I'm not a teacher - I'm a pedagogue and only teach a new class loosely translated "Movement". We had a school reform in 2014 and this mean that the children has to have 45 min. movement a day, this is mostly taught by a pedagogue. I tried this in my 2nd grade and 3rd grade. It didn't really work with my 0th grade - mostly because they are a tough group. But I'll bring it back when they are older. When I talk with my about what they would like to play next time; Silent ball is requested everytime. I never heard about it before, but now it's a favorite.
I've taken a maternity leave for about three years and I almost forgot how I had suffered from attention-proof? kids in my class.. hahaha I'm very happy to find your videos today.. thanks for sharing your difficulties and times trying to solve the problem.. Just knowing that I'm not the only one suffering in the classroom makes me feel better. - A new fan from South Korea;)
Hey Tina! Have you used schoolhouse rock videos to help try teach your lessons? I used to love these when I was a kid and am wondering if your kids would too. I don't know if this would work for you when you get your kids next year but have you considered having all of the kids you teach take a detailed survey for how they learn material the best at the beginning of the year? Might save you a lot of frustration and time :) I also have one strategy for getting through the day: When you get home if you can, do not have ANYBODY bother you about ANYTHING for 5-10 minutes each night unless it is an absolute emergency! I cannot tell you how many times college roommates came to me with minor issues that needed discussing and my emotions got a lot more heated than they needed to be! Happy holidays!
I love school house rock. I've used "I'm Just A Bill" last year when teaching the three branches of government! I have also come home and went straight to my room and shut the door. The boys know to wait for me to come out!😉 Another thing I will do is put on pajamas. It is like taking the day off and starting fresh.
I have the same thing in my classroom this year too. I'm dreading going back to work tomorrow. It has put me in a huge teacher burn out and I can't get rid of it.
+girliegirlzbowtique Burn out sucks. I've been there. Luckily this year the changes I made and my new frame of mind are helping me to not feel burned out. Frustrated at times, yes, but I am avoiding the burn.
There is a book called 1 2 3 magic. It is for parents but they made one for teachers too:). You should read it. I worked in a daycare for ten years and that was the discipline on the worst kids. We had 20 parents go out and read the book. Even a dad. Good luck.

+Holly McKnight Some years are just like that. Just remember, this class will end and things will go back to normal.

My 9th grade science teacher did ISNs with us this past year and I loved them!
