Laney VH100R vs Peavey 5150 - Can the Laney hang with the legend?

- Eyo! Here is the Laney VH100R up against a legend. The Peavey 5150. Enjoy!
Signal chain:
I'm using a Gibson SG Raw Power tuned to drop C# with a Seymour Duncan Black Winter pickup in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in the neck (used only for cleans here).
The guitar is running into a Deasdweald Duality DX which when on is running in TS style mode with gain at 0 and the EQ and Volume at around 1 o'clock. From there the signal goes into an Egnater SS4 Amp Switcher and into the amps. the active amp is routed back into the SS and from there into a Two Notes Torpedo Live with a GGD Cali IR loaded.

09:35 Final Thoughts
Hey guys, I've been seeing a few comments about the Laney sounding scooped. Yes, it does sound scooped... compared to the Peavey which is infamous for its "cocked wah" mids. It's all about the reference. Check the other video comparing it to the Marshall DSL, another very middy amp. I don't think the Laney sounds scooped there despite having pretty much the same settings.
It was not my objective to make them sound as close as possible to each other but provide references people know and often love. Each amp is dialed individually and not to each other. I doubt many people would call it scooped on its own either. It's only when compared to the very "special" mid signature of the 5150 that it sounds a bit subdued.
Just felt the need to say that. Thanks to everybody leaving comments and all the new subscribers. Cheers!
I love how they sound very good in their own unique characteristics. Peavey being fatter/fuller, Laney being brighter/more dynamic. Also fun to hear how dull are the 5150 clean´s in this demo.
I used to own a VH100R and is one of my favourite amps. I used to roll the Treble knob on Channel B to 0 then use the Presence knob to control my overall high end. This meant you could turn the Gain and Drive knobs higher to get a more aggressive tone without the hiss and piercing highs.
I've got to try that setting! Thanks for the input!
The crunch on the Laney is absolutely gorgeous... So lush..
Peavey sounds pretty cool! The best thing about the Laney, is the versatility. I used mine with some oldschool Soviet Military 6L6 tubest and accidentally created the most epic gutteral sounding doom distortion possible. Combined with a neck-through body guitar and the natural spring reverb, it generated a wall of sound that simply cannot be recreated elsewhere. Those NOS tubes served me well for 10 years.
Sounds friggin' amazing! I kinda have a soft spot for Laney Amps.
Thanks for commenting
Nice comparison here! I just bought a VH 100 and anxiously waiting for it to arrive from Italy of all places 🤔😮💨 they seem a bit hard to come by in the US and it seems to be for good reason! Keep up the good work! Really enjoy your channel!
Thanks! I hope you enjoy your VH100R
At first, the Laney's high gain is a bit more pleasing because it has more highs and clarity, but once your ear adjusts to the Peavey's darker character, it starts to sound WAY better because even though it has less highs, it has a thickness and fullness in the mids that the Laney doesn't. I bet these amps would blend well with each other though.
Very interesting! The higher the gainlevel got the more I was expecting for the Peavey to open up and out shine the Laney, but that never happened... While the mids of the Peavey in the high gain parts certainly had something, for my ears it's the Laney all the way. If the 5150 was a bit more open this would have been an impossible decision for the high gain tones ;)
Cheers!
Thats a great comparison video! Thanks for that.
I have to say that i own a VH100R from the newer generation with the recessed handles and it doesnt sound that scooped at all. It has phantastic rich Mids - i am rather surprised how this one turnes out against the Peavey.
I had a VC50R as my first real amp. Bright, although like most amps it got better cranked. I sort of cured it by changing speakers - ironically with vintage 30s which I generally find on the bright side. Also had lots of surface mount components in the preamp that meant it was difficult to repair.
I found with Laneys (GH50L, GH100L & VH100R), just use a darker speaker to control the highs.
One tip: the mids pot on the Laney is actually quite interactive. It has a weird “faux Marshall” thing going on when you push them forward.
Spot on videos, nice!
Thanks, man! Much appreciated! There is one final Laney VH100R shootout coming in the next one and a half-ish weeks!
The Laney does the cleans and crunch better here, though the 5150 with the bright has a nice crunch tone. In a metal mix, the 5150 is so popular because of that mid push and how it sits in the mix. The Laney has often the nicer tone on its own, but I could see it getting lost in a dense mix and sounding too scooped, maybe with more mids it would round out. My Laney Ironheart always seems to be pretty warm and mid heavy, though not as much as the 5150
As someone who owns both... if you only care about high gain tones and what to record, I think the 6505 would be the best amp to start out with. It's not about how it sounds alone, it's more about how it sounds in a mix. It just works. Also, the green and red channels are pleasantly different to my ears, and it's easy to dial in whether you want a light or a dark sound. The Laney is harder to mix.
I find the Laney very unpleasant. I thought the same in the Marshall comparison, those are sort of similar amps but the Laney has something that turns me off completely. The 5150 settings here are pretty different to what I'd use. To me a big strength of the 5150 is it keeps sounding good as you turn down the mids. And it doesn't need a lot of gain, I found the gain here to be a bit excessive. Anyways, amp comparisons are always fun, thanks for making them!
Thank you for your constructive feedback
👍👍👍 had my vh100r since 1997
Love the 5150 ! Awesome stuff 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yes, mate! It's a classic for a reason!
Laney has always been underrated.
Given my understanding of the topology of the laney (basically a modified tone stack jcm800 with gain stages thrown ontop) I wonder if the Laney breaths better with power amp distortion (old school metal tones) whereas the 5150 has a basically clean power amp. That 'scooped' sound is something I have found with many el34 amps if the master isn't pushed with which the top end smooths out (often too much) and the low mids come up. I have always found when el34 amps I've used (marshalls, vox ac50/100, bad cat hot cat) break up suddenly the thinness disappears. I am hungry for a VH100R to try myself for this, planning to set it up more like a higher gain Zakk Wylde sound or 70s rock but just a little more high gain (The Darkness).
You had me at the Darkness! Great guitar tones
I miss my vh100 such an underrated amp
I absolutely agree
One of the best live tones I have in my old metal band was the VH100R in the low input, gain and drive at 6.5. Great amp but it developed some weird problem in the power section unfortunately
Sorry to hear it developed issues. Unfortunately I've heard this a lot since making these videos. It appears these weren't the most reliable which is a shame because they sound so sweet. Those gain and drive settings are pretty much the sweet spot in my opinion!
Thanks for leaving a comment!
The Laney has the better clean sound obviously, but the 5150 has always been harped on for its lackluster clean channel. For high gain, the Laney has a flubby low end with scooped mids and a sort of icepick high end. Whereas the 5150 is pretty mid forward and tight in the low end even without the boost. With the boost, both amps improve, but the Laney still ends up sounding like it lacks mid presence. I am sure with some tweaking each amp could be matched to get close to one another, but in the end the 5150 is a more pleasant tone to begin with, so a bit easier to get it where you want it.
The Laney has some really nice sparkly harmonics.
At times the 5150 sounded muffled in comparison.
I used to own an ORIGINAL 5150 so this is not at slap at Peavey.
In this side by side comparison, the Laney wins, HANDS DOWN.
The Laney has so much more definition. You hear each note with so much more Clarity with the Laney.
Unfortunately, there are ZERO Laney Dealers anywhere near me now or back when I was really looking for a great Touring Rig.
Too old now to lug around a monster rig but maybe I'll get lucky enough to find one used to pick up for my Studio.
I know Paul Gilbert AND THE LEGENDARY TONY IOMMI used Laney so that alone should be reason enough!!...LOL...
Wow man where can I hear the riff from 5:50? Amazing tones, I'd love to hear a full song of that!
Thanks, man! It was the chorus of a demo I recorded years ago.
I've been feeling inspired to write and record again recently. I may recycle that riff!
The Laney definitely nails that high-mid Tony Iommi sound.
The Laney sounds scooped here and the Peavey very mid forward. What IR / speakers were you using for the comparison out of interest?
Both very cool sounds!
@@jcwear89 it's a preset from the GGD Cali IR pack called Great Dane which is essentially a blend of SM57 and M160 on a Mesa cab with (I believe) early 2000s Vintage 30s
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne what reactive load box are you using? sounds very clear. Any EQ or anything else added in post?
A Two Notes Torpedo Live. Now that you said it, I checked and there seems to be a bit of a boost of 120 Hz and 6 kHz which I was not aware of
@@RaddDadd29 I just deactivated the EQ in the unit and I am not sure if I notice a difference at all. Not sure if it affects 3rd party IRs. I'll leave it off in future, just in case. Thanks for the comment. I would never have checked the units settings otherwise
Great tones from both! My ear prefers the 5150 over the Laney but, to each their own. The Laney sounds too scooped in my opinion
are you using 6L6's or El-34's in the Laney?
JJ 6L6GC
Seems like the Laney GH50/100L would be a more apt comparison, no?
If only I had one
man peavy sounds like it has too much low mids. i wish u add more mids in the VH100 high gain setting to bring up the mids.
I Own both but hands down the Laney takes it ! It is such a underrated amp!
The 5150 is a great amp but versatility wise, Laney hands down . I prefer 6L6 tubes in the Laney then El-34s . It’s more robust .
Yes, the VH100R is too underrated today which is why I wanted to make a few videos about it. It deserves more spotlight!
Thanks for taking time to leave a comment
The other guitar player in my band has the old VH100R, whereas I have the 5150.
MAN, the sound of both together is MASSIVE, and we never have volume fights, as both cut soo clearly. It's like their frequency responses complement each other and use different areas of the spectrum, hence you can always hear both guitars.
Just my 2c
Laney wins this one!!
Tbh I love the Laney. It would cut through a live mix much better IMHO.
It's a really special amp
@TheOtherJohnBrowne I live in Japan now and the second hand store has one on special clearance for about $387 usd with a 4x12 cab. I am real tempted to buy it.
@@guitarsaremyfriendzzz7077 with a cab included? BUY IT!
@TheOtherJohnBrowne yeah. I will swing by the store and give it a play on my way back from hiking. Your vid sealed the deal. I still have some usd to put to good use. XD
Laney
I had a gh100l head and it walked all over alot of amps I had in the past. Regret selling it.
the vh100 makes your guitar sound like it has a wiring issue
It's a noisy amp for sure. It's the only thing I'd change about it. Put DC heaters on all the tubes or add a hum balance pot
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne i wasn't talking about the noise... i meant it sounds like the guitar's pickup is wired in parallel. Very hollowed out mids
Push those mids up on that Laney geez.
I think a better match would be the 5150 against the original L
aney Tony Iommi
Sadly, those are hard to find at a decent price
the Laney can sound much better than that, no mids at all and shrill, it can sound full and big, maybe it does not have the best tightness, but nothing an OD cannot fix.
Sorry you didn't like it. I love the Laney and thought it sounded nice here
I think if one wants to compare amps just plug directly into the amp; don't use effects.
Err... I didn't use effects
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne What is a Deasdweald Duality DX? What is a Two Notes Torpedo Live with a GGD Cali IR loaded?
@@davidlambert3892 the Deadweald is an overdrive I use to boost some sections. You could call that an effect I guess. At the same time I also demo the amps at the same settings without it.
The Two Notes is a reactive load box that replaces the speaker cabinet in this setup and the GGD Cali IR is the impulse response which simulates the acoustic response of the cab. I would not class those as effects
