      Is the gain maxed out on the Orange? I own the IRT120H and have always lusted after Orange amps but have been underwhelmed by the amount of gain on tap every time I play one, whereas the Laney has gain for days. Love the voicing on Orange amps too but imagine it would get lost in a live mix in a band with more than one guitar. Can see why they're so well suited to Doom 🤘

Great video I enjoyed this and I liked the Laney more not only for its sounds but, for its looks as well and just the overall things you seem to be able to change on it. I don't own ether amps FYI. I have owned the Laney for a bit over a year now. It took a little effort, at least for me, to get the tone I was looking for, but the tonal options are so wide ranging you can't go wrong with this amp. Throw an overdrive into the mix and that creates even more possibilities. Needless to say, I thought the Laney was more aggressive sounding to my ear. That would be my choice.

    Ive owned the Laney irt studio and own the irt60. Played both a lot live. My band mate used the Powerball. This was a perfect combination because of the different voicings. Really good demo! I've had the IRT60 a long time and was curious to see it compared with another amp, and it really does hold as well as I thought. One note that seems often overlooked: the Lead channel has some kind of integrated mid boost, so it sounds extra chunky while the Rhythm channel sounds a bit more open. This could also affect the perception a little (but sounds great in the context here).

    I bought a used Ironheart 60 head almost reluctantly but because it was so cheap (250 euros), I couldn't pass the offer. I changed the (factory) preamp tubes (some shitty Ruby) and now, it's my most used amp. They are really underrated amps. Love the Orange tone too. Only recorded a Rockerverb 50 mkI, a Rocker 30 and a Dark Terror, they were great each time.

    Got a IRT60 for a couple of months, let's say it wasn't exactly what I was looking for or wasn't what I was expecting from it, for that matter. I guess this video proves that sometimes we've got to experiment more with what we have before calling it quits. I truly like the Laney best in this comparison. My Laney still has something in it to give!!

    • @SonicDriveStudio
      @SonicDriveStudio  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah man, definitely give it another shot. It has a lot of options to get the sound to your liking. I personally always use the built in boost for adding gain and I like to experiment with the push pull eq to find the right tone.

    • @JohnWiku
      @JohnWiku 2 роки тому

      @@SonicDriveStudio Agreed! I fired the IRT up right after work and yeah, it's a great amp. My main gripe with my unit is the buzzing noises that I can't get rid of, like that 50Hz hum that's inevitable when playing single coils, but happens with and without any guitar plugged in (all my guitars have humbuckers and sound dead quiet with other amps). Maybe it needs a recap or more filtering in the power supply, I guess one day I might mod it with a choke too.

      Find the sweet spot 😉
      Mine is on the variwatt, I have to past noon. For that roll back the volume on each channel because it's loud as f**k
      If I don't it sound very fizzy, scooped… Increase the wattage and all the mids comes back, shines and the sound became very balanced.

    Wow ! Thank you very much for that awesome comparison.
    Personally I'll choose the Orange over the Laney... unfortunately for my wallet ! I found the Rockerverb have more complex midranges and yield more definite notes in the high pitch register.
    In my opinion , the Orange opens more sonic possibilities for different style . But both are good choice though.

    I've tried using an Orange Rockerverb in a studio, and I own a Laney IRT Studio (Ironheart series).
    This video, to me, confirms my responses:
    The Laney is just more tight sounding, and it has loads more options (including re-amping!!) for finetuning, whereas the Orange sounded more flabby/spongy. Great for doom or sludge, but that's not my shtick 🤘😎🤘

  • @claytongouin5605

    I guess amps and cabs/speakers are a lot like spices in the kitchen. You need to use the right flavours for the meal you're preparing.
    In this case, I liked the Laney more. Smoother sounding in its distortion and it fit the mix really well, but that's just a subjective preference. The amp blend sounded really cool and it seemed like the Rockerverb was able to add more hair and aggression to the mix, while the Laney gave a bit more clarity or articulation. These were a good set of amps to test against each other and pair up.
    As a band member and hobby recording and mix engineer, it's really great to learn from your videos and get a sense of different sounds, how they can work together, and getting to understand what an amp and cab give as their sonic personality. Thanks Jon.

    Laney is more focused and sits better in the track as you said. Orange is more open and would be better imo for more complex chords and ringing arpeggios (tonal mids sit lower). The real winner is the Laney left Orange Right. Aggressive, focused, tasty, and open - all at the same time. Love it! I appreciate these comparisons - nothing like coffee and great sounding amps in the morning.

    Wasn't expecting that battle. I use the Laney as a Djent machine for the chugs. But I always dial down the lows, which would have made these two sound closer in this comparison too. But yeah, this Amp is really flexible! Though I should add that the Rhythm Channel is just giving you the option to dial in another tone. It sounds the same as the Lead channel. Still really useful feature! More Amps should have this. And "setting the wattage" means that this thing has a built in attenuator. Don't know if you can use it without speaker though.

    • @ukmanthailand

    They both did excellently in the mix, but I think the Ironheart edges out and could do even better with very high gain, Metal-oriented works.
    That said, I’d be curious to see how an Ironheart 120 would perform against the Fireball 100 and the Diavlo RD100H for the seriously heavy stuff, including the very low tuned demonstrations of the 8/9 string variety where voicing and tightness also become important factors.
