Spent the last year playing every single mgs game for the first time in chronological order. Bought a whole ps3 just for this game and it was so worth it. After playing all those games and finally getting to this epic conclusion. I shed a tear seeing big boss at the end. I didn’t know what I was missing out on all these years. I always knew about and respected this series but never sat down to play it. I remember the hype was always insane for these games. Now that I have played it I can safely say this is without a doubt my favorite video game series of all time. The story is just unmatched. The energy, the characters, the music, the themes. It’s all perfect. I almost don’t want it to end. I wish their was more games in the series to indulge in. Sadly it looks like we will never get another mgs game ever again.

Like how snake continued to be a good guy even though the governments kept abusing him, while big boss got fed up with governments; snake always met ocelot as an adversary while big boss got alot of support from him, snake didn't really hate anyone despite the rough life while big boss had a lot of hatred etc. I guess Kojima wanted to show us that even if you're the best, you can go both ways and become a good guy or a subjectively selfish one.

Aside from graphics, modern games rarely match projects like this one, I worry great game narratives like the metal gear series will soon be a thing of the past…way too much focus on mutiplayer/live service/cosmetic purchases now…in theory none of those things should stop developers having great stories in their games, but somehow they do 🙃
Too many modern games are trying to go the Dark Souls route by putting most of the story in the background and in files to read and piece together the story yourself. MGS5 was headed in that direction which I hated. Most of the bigger plot points were all in those damn tapes that you had to listen to if you wanted the entire story.
it's not that it stops the devs from doing it, they just choose not to, cause why put in the effort when you can get the same amount of money without it. It's sad cause even 10 years ago true gamers wouldn't let that fly and they would be all in an uproar and games would have been basically canceled, but now most of the audience is getting sucked in with the small micro transaction bs that almost never does anything for the story or the quality of the game itself

Those tapes were meant to be played and listened to in order to make him think that was him. Besides that, the game was rushed and possibly Kojima was forced to come up with the phantom pain excuse to the lawyers of Konami to release him with a decent amount of pay and for him unable to talk about the game and unable to attend the game awards to receive his award. Even those codec conversations were removed from the game. There are so many clues about the game not being complete from act 1 being reused for act 2 and act 3 was missing, the shower area says temporary, battle gear removed, Chico was killed instead, weapon upgrades that has too many levels versions that are blank, animals that are invisible just captured by random, Animal sanctuary that seems like it should be bigger, and those side walks in the base that seemed like meant for the soldiers to be walking around while you drive in the main road. There's so many things missing besides the obvious mission that was in the dvd that can be viewed in youtube as well.

Honestly I think the game was done by different groups and then put together that's why it ended up like episodic. We don't know. It didn't even have that Canon ending showing his demise for the modern fans who didn't even know about the original metal gear. The story is still appreciated though regardless on how different it is compared to the previous titles.
I bought a PS3 for this game alone. It was the only game I never got rid of the entire time I owned the system. Most of my games I bought usually got traded in for newer games. But not this one.
PS3 can play the entire main line metal gear series. The legacy collection, if bought new, comes with a code for mgs1. Has mgs2 and mgs3, which has mg1 and mg2. Also has peacewalker and mgs4
I love these reviews of older games. Mgs will forever be special to me. I saved up and bought zone of the enders when I was 12, which came with a mgs 2 demo of the tanker mission. I played it over and over and finally convinced my parents to get me the game for Christmas. It's the moment I realized that video games could be so much more. Snake eater was my favorite mgs, but I did enjoy 4 for what it was. I was a sucker for the fan service in this game admittedly. Lol. Favorite series of all time.
I loved it too. At the time it was the best looking game available. I used to wait for the cutscenes and smoke a blunt while I watched them lol. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. One of my all-time favorites.
I actually usually get annoyed with games that have a lot of exposition and cutscenes. This is the exception though. MGS4 is my favorite in the series, and my favorite game period. The cutscenes are very long, but if you are a lifelong fan of the franchise you cherish every second. I've literally been playing since the original Metal Gear on NES, and Snake is my favorite video game hero.
I had a 360 back in the 2000's so never got the chance to play a lot of PS3 exclusives. I switched to the PS4 but unfortunately the MGS series was never ported over. I bought a used PS3 Super Slim and the MGS Legacy Edition. First time playing the series and I'm so glad I did.
This is the type of game that would have made you buy a system for it. When I bought XBox one it was specifically for gears 4. I’m a huge gears fan. This feels like it would’ve made me buy a PS3.
This an Elden Ring were my two most rewarded anticipated releases. Only Resident Evil, Zelda Ocarina of Time, KOTOR and Demons Souls topped those anticipations. That's right MSG4 is my favorite Kojima game.

if you're no rookie but a 10 year vet, buy this game in Japanese. PS3s are region free, you don't need a JP account, and most of the menus in the game are in English anyway, but voices, subtitles, and item descriptions are Japanese. all I can say is somehow the game with Japanese voices has a much more serious tone.
Man i miss the era where i would always look forward to the next MGS game.. Every game in the franchise belong on the top shelf. Konami should be burned to the ground for doing what they did.

Let me tell you all this - MGS4 was one of the most technically impressive video games ever made in that time. The character models were superb and the attention to details on so many different pararmeters were mindblowing. The transition from cutscene to gamplay were seemless and not many video games could do this as effortlessly as MGS4. This game was Kojima at his peak in terms of "Metal Gear Solid" type story telling (Snake Eater is still the best in the series). Despite its confusing nature of story telling, it is one of the greatest games of all time, but Snake Eater still being the best game of all time imo.
Among all the Metal Gear Solid games, Guns of the Patriots is the only one that I haven't played because finding a PS3 in my area is like finding a needle in the haystack. I'm being confused on whether i should buy a PS3 and play it there or emulate it on PC.

I'm one to enjoy the cut scenes in games so I thoroughly enjoyed it all, I remember thinking that this game looks like a ps4 game rather than a PS3 it's a masterpiece of game art.
How this was not remastered for the PS4 or has not been brought back for the PS5 is beyond me. This could literally print money. Better than The Last of Us part one in my opinion at least.
It’s a shame this game is stuck in Konami jail. I feel like if they really tried, they could fin a way to make this game playable on modern consoles. But considering how this game was built specifically around the PS3 hardware and how much labor it’d take to rebuild the game for it to work on other platforms, I’m glad I still got my PS3 and collector’s edition of MGS4 😭
Great game, great story and the graphics still hold up well. Only thing I don't buy about the story is snake going from looking like he's in his prime to looking like mid 70s in just 5 years even though he is a clone.
Just bought a copy of this game on disc so it's still around on ebay and retail shops. Hope this game will be in vol 2 of metal gear solid masters collection! Solid snake is old but he was the best in the military better than an British SAS man. First game is the real classic in this franchise!

The jump from ps2 mgs3 graphics to PS3 mgs4 graphics was the most significant we had ever seen. This game still looks amazing

I remember buying a ps3 in 2011 just to play this. Waiting for it to install with the image of old snake smoking a cigarette got me so hyped.
