Q: Why isn´t the Marble Machine on the stage?
A: Apart from not really being transportable, the Marble Machine does not work well enough to be used on stage for the moment, too many design mistakes combined prohibits that. BUT! We are going to build a full sized Marble Machine 2.0 that we can tour with in the future. First we are going to record our new album and release that, after the release we will build the new modular Marble Machine 2.0. And then we will tour the world with the new record and the new Machine!
Like, Share and Subscribe for more Wintergatanvideos in the future!
Thanks to Göteborgs Kulturkalas for inviting us to perform on Götaplatsen, all the stage crew that worked with us on this evening and Jesper Kumberg for booking the show.
Thanks also to Emma Weber & Elaine Dowling at makewaveproductions.com
Thanks to You for watching! All the best, Wintergatan
If you want to support:
The fact that you are watching the videos and care about the music and future of Wintergatan is the best support anyone can have, I want to thank everyone who is here for that kind of support, it is really the fuel for the Wintergatan Engine.

Why do we accept support in this way?
I, Martin, can already sustain myself 100% doing what I love to do. If you want to support artists/organisations who have not yet reached that privileged position, please consider supporting other artists/organisations who need the support more. With that said, I have too many ideas and too little time and with your support I can get more help from people around me to execute the ideas better and bring them out in the world faster.

That bassist didn’t have to go that hard. But he did that, he did that for us.
The bassist is doing a perfect job if I do say so myself. Also the drummer
@@Xithos777 Everyone is doing good.
Dominic Fornaro you obviously don’t know anything about bass
@@marcomazz2256 Well I do, and I agree with him - what was your point?
Marco you clearly don’t understand that it was a compliment. So in all your wonderful masterful glory as a bassist please explain why someone like me who plays like 10 different instruments doesn’t know anything about bass or music in general? I thought they were kicking ass.
Here we have a demonstration of how the work of 1 machine can be accomplished with just 4 humans!
At least they don't loose all their marbles. :P
But they're playing music with less complex machines...

attention to detail... I don't have a favorite style of music, but this song has earned a place among my favorites just because of all the care the band put into playing it live
I just love how the crowd gets so quiet during the breakdown. RESPECT.
constantinos schinas are you just going around here hating everything and everyone? This is the second comment from you I have seen just acting like your better than everyone. Don’t like the music? Then don’t listen to it,. Don’t like Martin? Then don’t watch him. Simple as that.

I first heard this song a few years ago, the original marble machine video. I noticed the bass part of the machine, but it didn't really stand out like it does in this live performance. Dude playing the bass stole the show!!
Plot twist:
Martin controlled these people with his own mind.
Plot-plot Twist: The machine controlled the four of them by itself backstage, wake up atheists.
😮!
@@justadog8011 Hahahaha😂😂😂
Well considering the fact they are all going by the music Martin's wrote with his mind, we can safely say that he in fact IS controlling their action with his mind😉

He meant the bass was badass, but I think you knew that already.

I had to think of Tony Levin, too. Great sound!
Really preferred the marble version. Sounded a little like harmonics.
This music really makes people happy, doesn't it?
Johann Schiel It's sensational!
It at least makes me happy :)
it does.
Yeah... as it goes.. simplicity is the key to happiness.

I love this crowd. They clap on beat.
Erm, musically speaking, it's the offbeat actually ;-)
@@BlueSparkle yeah
At least it’s not just random clapping.
Yeah... if they were German (or Austrian) they would always clap on 1 and 3... or even 1 2 3 4... I am Austrian and this makes me crazy all the time. I remember once in a concert of an Austrian Artist the guy stopped playing and instructed the audience to clap on the offbeat - which is of course the only correct way for this type of music... of course for some of the folk music and marches, etc. it is ok to clap 1, 3.... I am simply surprised that so many Germans and Austrians dont hear the difference and what fits when :).

Many have praised the bass, I think the drums have a killer tone as well!
Which one, the fup fup fup or the fap fap fap?
I'm a drummer, and I always think that the drums are underrated too.
@@fritzhans3 Completely agree
This drummer is tight!
The drumer has skills of d hi-hat i succ at u-sing hi-hat
Honestly, the coolest bit about this was how the drummer used a paint brush to make the sound of the flywheel spinning up.
Ok, it's not actually a paint brush, it's a specific tool for drummers and percussive instruments known as drum brushes.
Feel free to search then up yourself.
paint brushes are way too quiet for performances and just sound overall bad.
It’s not a paintbrush, it’s a drumstick, brush sticks are and have been used in most jazz music for years
those are jazz brush sticks
Friend : What instrument do you play?
Me : Typewriter.
Luna great tempo at laundry machine!
Interestingly, I never saw or heard the bassist actually play the typewriter in this song. Maybe they used it in other songs?
@@evknucklehead In the beginning of the song, the "ticking" that starts at the same time as the vibraphone is the typewriter. You can see the bassist standing next to the drums tapping away at it. It looks to be beige, and a more modern one.

That's me
I'm surprised you guys didn't have just one person making the wheel turning sound.
They do. Go to 00:25 and you can see it.
Of course, you can't really hear it while the full song is playing,
but he's doing it, _at least_ in the beginning.
the drummer can't still doing this forever. he has to play
Of course, but at least they do it in the beginning...
In the original video with the marble machine, that's the time you can hear it most clearly.
I hadn't realized how much the mechanical sounds that the machine makes play a *_HUGE_* part in the song until I saw this live band version.
Magnus Fischer It's in the beginning, yea, but I meant for the whole song, since it's so prominent in the marble machine video.
+Chaotic Arrow it would be cool but the drummer doesnt have enough hands to do it

How have I never seen this before? I've listened to the Marble Machine song and watched the video hundreds of times...
My thoughts exactly. This is so good and I’m so glad I found it
It doesn't matter how many times I hear this song. It doesn't matter if it's the original or a cover. This song moves me deeply every time. Wintergatan, you are truly an inspiration.
Awesome! I love this song. it's so cool how the marble machine can play all these instruments at one time, but you guys need 4 or 5 people.
I hope the Marble Machine 2.0 has "proper" drums. Having them recorded individually and edited seems like a bit of a cheap shortcut to having a one man band instrument.
if you got a normal drum, it could break if you dropped a marble on it.
The marble mass needed would be pretty big, as well as the space for a giant bass drum inside.
I'm sure the drop height could be adjusted to account for that
Johan Krooneman You would then risk high pressures on the skin of the drum to produce that sound. Same reason why large drums (bass, and a few 28" toms) are played using felt tipped mallet instead of a regular stick.
Wintergatan music always makes me feel like when I finally fell in love--not a crush, not a fling, not infatuation, but real love, the kind where you walk around all day smiling without even realizing it. *That's* what Wintergatan music makes me feel. Every. Single. Time. 🙂
I don't know why but this song sounds so calm yet so energetic at the same time.

Every time I come back to listen to this version I got chills... Especially now with Martin starting over again with the third version of the machine...! ⚙
That was a nice song in the marble machine, I can't wait for the 2.0 version.
I forgot about this! I've been so wrapped up watching Martin build the MMX, it made me cry to be reminded how this whole thing got started!
The marble machine is fabulous but to be honest, seeing two people cooperate on a single xylophone is more exciting. It's just a fabulous song that probably could live a life on its own.
After listening to the machine version for how many years and finding this live version only today.. Man, I wanted to cry and I don't know why..

Really great adaptation, guys. Obviously it's lacking some of the charm without the machine itself, but it really shows you how deceivingly complex the composition is and makes you appreciate the original that much more.

Yea buddy!!👍
Whats with your profile pic lol
just when i thought there was no possible way that the Marble Machine song couldn’t sound any more awesome...and i use that word literally; i actually am completely in awe.
So goooooooood
Such a cool tune. I love the band version as much as the original machine.
Damn, the sound of that bass! Does anyone know the effects he's using?
Yeah I would really like a pedal that would make my bass sound like that
Sounds like a bass into a really good preamp and compressor. Maybe an octaver.
This is a great song for a bassist though, because the repetitive melody the bass can do practically whatever he wants.
But he's playing a part that was originally sequenced, so his job is specifically the opposite of playing whatever he wants. He is supposed to be a robot.
+Eric Dahl the bass was only partially sequenced. The bass strings were fretted by hand while the marbles actually plucked the strings in a set order. So the bassist would still have much more freedom than the the others as the only thing strict is the rhythm.
I've never seen anyone rock out to a xylophone quite like Martin. I may have missed my chance on several concerts of my favorite bands, but I pray to the universe I never miss the MMX concert on it's world tour.
每次 来听这首曲子 都会 特别的感动
Amazing! This really puts things into perspective since you need 5 people to emulate it.
5? One of us needs (new) glasses.
I bet he's talking about the cameraman :)
I love the original, but I have to say this one sounds way smoother than the original.
Everyone is so talented and Martin is the genius behind it all but that drummer is off the charts... precise, confident, outstanding.

Me: Marbles
You are extremely talented and creative young people - just the ones our world needs to be a better place! Thank You!
I cried when I saw the original marble machine video and the tears have returned
Q: Why isn´t the Marble Machine on the stage?
A: Because playing it live is f****ng AWESOME!!!!
Myosotis85 Actual answer is the machine barely worked and couldn’t get out the door.
Answer is in the description !
I thought that "non-marble' version will be more slowly and without pause in the middle... however it's awesome too!
Thanks for You and all your band!
p.s.: we wating you in Russia :)
I also think that it's a bit too fast.
However, the bass line is great. ^^
You're kidding about the tempo right?
I thought the original seemed a tad slow so I popped it into WaveGuide and sped up the tempo by about 10-12% before loading it into my iPod and passing the sped up version around.
If you play the original and set the playback to 1.25 you get a loose approximation but YT has too many artifacts in its' processing to give a decent rendering.
I also upmixed it to Dolby Surround.
Now I wanna chart it all out - record it all into MIDI and make it into a surround sound demo track with all the ping ponging and bouncing around like on a 50's stereo demo tape.
