I love the new NPC! It's also great to see your level design process. Level design is something I haven't gotten into yet and it intimidates the hell out of me. Keep up the amazing work!
It was not intentional but.. I of course decided to keep it! :D If you do start with level design, just know that it can be iterated on and getting tester feedback is always great! :)
This level is looking amazing! Really jealous of how optimized your workflow is LOL. I wish I could crank out levels as quick as you man! Keep up the good work 🥰
Great and exciting update! 🎉 Love Blinky! Maybe you should make it look like he's emerging (like a worm) to further sell the idea that he's following you underground. And an idea for your villain, maybe he should be made of something that's opposite of paper/clay? To clearly differentiate him/her from the rest of the world? Like your scissor enemies are obviously harmful to the player. Just a thought! Love the updates mate, keep em' coming! ❤
Thanks a lot Octamer :D ooh that's a good idea, making him longer so he's "really" peeking up. Okay I like that he should be something else, I'll see what I can come up with!
From the thumbnail I really thought he would be much bigger! If he bursts out of a spot with a ripped paper hole (like a straw through a fast-food cup lid) you could make him much bigger and only show him from the mid-forearm and up. That leaves the player to wonder "What is he attached to? Is he really just a human's hand using their imagination?!" as well as him actually moving (as he appears/disappears) communicating to the player that he does have the ability to move on his own. He feels like he's teleporting right now. Also making his bottom lip look more like a thumb in a sock could be really funny and lean into the "is he a human?!" lore hahaha Also how mean of you to name him blinky when not being able to close his eyes is such a key part of his character 😂
I think it's good when different worlds have different focal points, it creates variety. I find a level with more story focus and NPCs like Blinky cool - but the majority of levels should maybe have a different focus. I always like exploration. I don't know how you feel about linearity, but here you could also create variation per level. Love your updates, Kev - great video!
Totally agree, majority of levels will have exploration and platforming I think. I wouldn't be against a linear level that had multiple paths to encourage different playstyles
what makes a platformer so good is for players to go about it in their own way, so what you said in the ending parts of the video is very good! nobody really likes the immersion to be broken just because they went about it their way, looks good so far!
the hand is a sock puppet so I think they should stick out of random spots in the map rather than the surface flipping. Like holes or tunnels that the puppet would stick out of
Game’s looking great! I do have a suggestion that might not be possible but I do think it would be cool. As I’m watching this I’ve noticed that the world really reacts to you, for example, parts of the level unfolding or popping in as you walk near them is really cool and reactive. And so is the rotation of other parts of the level if you interact with the gear (although this is more of a mechanic rather than a thing to make the world more reactive, but still). I think you should really lean into it. Because it is genuinely really cool and unique. Especially the unfolding, that’s very unique to your game. And what could be even more unique is to make the ground actually feel like paper (again, I’m not sure if it’s possible). Like instead of footsteps or simple particles, the paper kind of goes down like a real paper would when the leg interacts with it. This is just one suggestion, but the main point is that if you make a lot of the world/level reactive, that could make your game even more unique than it already is. Keep up the great work!
I really really appreciate the comment, I hope to do more of that stuff for other parts of the game! I have some "walking on paper to make it press down" shaders but haven't done too much on that part lately. I will 100% add that in the first level I'm working on! Good idea!
Make Blinky a wool sock puppet, a sheep like Lambchops... then make blinky the main villain of the game (as a wolf instead of a fox) luring you along the path, so that it's a wolf in sheep's clothing.
I loved how your other video talked about the characters scale. That being said i think it would be fun if you upscaled blinky so he’s massive and looking down on you
Thanks! Tearaway is a big visual inspiration, I loved it on my Vita. Sadly I can't find my charger anymore so I can't play it.. But it's out on ps4 which is also a good version of the game!
Maybe you could also add the mechanic to allow the player to build platforms, which has to collect specific items to build, but could only build 1 platform, like buble boble who could create bubbles to reach higher places
SUGGESTION BLINKY: instead of Blinky rotating with a panel, why not have them pop out like the floor is a flap, with a handle or string for them to pull it closed.
Hmm I see, maybe also look into some photography techniques used in lighting, as in Key light, fill light etc (can disable shadows on all the helper lights). I've been experimenting with this vs just GI taking care of things, and I am liking the results so far. Even can put a directional light facing up. Maybe you'd come up with something really nice.
Good luck with the full time work! I hope it works out well for you and the project! But make sure you take some time to yourself! Also I love Blinky, would die for Blinky
i’m gonna give my unsolicited opinion on the graphics because i want to (just skip this comment if you want, it looks great already!) ok, so first thing i would do is change the aspect ratio of the game. the game has a great aesthetic already, but i think making the window compact (maybe 4:3) would add to the vibe that i think ur going for. next thing i would do is add a vignette and some other post processing stuff. last thing id do it add some sort of shader and lighting to kind of tie it all together. i feel like the 3d models don’t really match the environment, and it feels a bit off. anyway, have a great day. this game looks AWESOME
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Joseph! I plan on keeping the aspect ratio since majority of people prefer a wider screen. Personally I like that. There are some post process (and vignette) but maybe not final touches on it. Not sure how well it comes across in the video as well. Shader and lighting is something I want to go over in the coming months actually.
What if Blinky had a sibling with a missing button eye named Winky? Yes, this entire suggestion is based on a C-tier wordplay joke.
S tier
omg omg omg, saving that for a sequel hahaha
@@WhyKev Just don't bring up their other siblings, Kinky and Drinky.
HAHHA STOP! LOL
This looks phenomenal! Being a solo game dev, your videos comes as a huge inspiration. Keep 'em coming.!
I appreciate that so much Hamzah, best of luck with your own project. I took a look at Sky Harvest, that looks sick! Well done!
Really love the aesthetic of this game, it's so cute!
Big big thanks!

I really hope it feels like that throughout the development :)

haha I might be putting too much pressure on myself on that one :D

Finally new dev log, love your content ❤
It was about time. Thanks a lot for that!
I'm so happy every time I see more progress on this game. Looking forward to it's eventual release!!
I really appreciate that Tom! We're getting close (even though it's still a while left)
love watching these can't wait for the full game!!
Glad to hear that! I enjoy creating these!

Big thanks for that, I hope to make sure there's a path for everyone in the game. Will have to make sure to test a lot :D
Love how blinky turned out! Your voice line takes will be missed but excited for the future Voice actor to take on the role!
haha this time it's better if the voice actors does it but I'm with you on this.. they will be missed :D
This looks really nice.

Mustache starts with Must so you must to have one :D.
I'll keep it for a while :D

hmm, that's not a dumb idea actually!

There's a slight chance that I'll add that :D
Yout game look awsome! I remember something similar on PS Vita - Tearaway Unfolded.
Thanks! Tearaway is a big visual inspiration, I loved it on my Vita. Sadly I can't find my charger anymore so I can't play it.. But it's out on ps4 which is also a good version of the game!
Chick needs a stache for as long as you keep yours
Admit it, you want me to keep the stache
It would be cool if the sock puppet came from the void, so you would wonder if the sock puppet was its own entity or a part of some larger creature.
Okay I really like that idea, could become some sort of theory!
Maybe you could also add the mechanic to allow the player to build platforms, which has to collect specific items to build, but could only build 1 platform, like buble boble who could create bubbles to reach higher places
That is a fun idea! I can see if I find a good fit for it with the current controls in the game.
you should have the hand puppet become evil in the end lol
I mean.. that's a cool idea!
should do a kickstarter for this!
I should talk about why I don't want that!
Blinky reminds me of sock puppet from my friendly neighborhood, i would look at that!
SUGGESTION BLINKY: instead of Blinky rotating with a panel, why not have them pop out like the floor is a flap, with a handle or string for them to pull it closed.
I like that idea, will see what I can do about making Blinky longer.
How many lights are you using/what's your lighting setup?
Right now I'm only using directional light, but I'm playing around with cubemaps to get some colors I want in the reflections and shadows.
Blinky looks cool and fits into the level but makes me wonder what the world is meant to be. Is it in a child's imagination or a puppet show?
Good luck with the full time work! I hope it works out well for you and the project! But make sure you take some time to yourself!
Also I love Blinky, would die for Blinky

Will there be a grading system in the game, depending on how good you did in a level? The grades are D, C, B, A, and S.
There's not anything like that planned. Maybe a score screen of some sort to display what you've found.
the whole idea of a world of arts and craft reinds of the game Yoshi's Crafted World? IT WOULD BE A GOOD INSPIRATION
Does Chick have a death animation when he runs out of health?
