I saw a bit of this game and it looks pretty fun! One thing I would recommend is to have more momentum while moving around, it looks like the player moves kinda slow, which is good for normal gameplay but for people that want to speedrun it would be nice to have some techniques to gain speed, maybe after your dive or ground pound jump you will move faster but as you walk you slow down to the normal speed

    Here's an idea
Make it possible that we can make origami creatures to help us in those levels. For example, a level so big we can't cross it or explore it unless we make a Pterosaurs/bird origami. And a speed challenge that we can't finish in time unless we make ourselves a cheetah origami companion. A boat origami for a water level. A paper plane level to test how long we can stay in the air before we land which test's the player's controlling skills. Something like this. Which implements the variety of paper uses and flexibility and make it another unique feature of the game.

The "Paper Tech" that you've shown off looks incredibly innovative. This could be your game's defining "it" factor but could potentially lead to some issues. I can see it causing some problems later in development when you want the P.T. to reveal huge map segments leading to performance issues. It could also slow down the level creation process because not only do you have to handcraft each segment of walls, floors, and roofs that need to be moved but, you'll have to redo certain areas if the P.T. motion doesn't look satisfying. However, I don't know much about your system or the rules that you created for it so I'm gonna assume it's pretty modular.
Again, I think this Paper Tech could be a really strong selling point for your game. You could create really intricate levels with lots of different paths and hidden secrets that it would take players multiple playthroughs to find (this will really help replayability). This type of game feel reminds me of Little Big Planet with all the different realistic textures of materials.
Leaning into this paper aesthetic you could do anything from:
    - Paper Boats sailing
    - Paper planes flying across the level
    - Origami creatures walking around
    - Having different level themes based on paper themes (Newspaper, Magazine Cutout, Old Tome/Scroll, Water Color Art, Canvas, etc.)
For some game juice about the Paper Tech, you can add satisfying paper folding sounds or various paper tears (for when a monster or boss rips the level). Another small feature could be dust/paper/cardboard/scraps coming from the direction of the appearing paper (this will make the appearing paper look like it came from some magical place that has vast amounts of stuff).
Some other game juice you could add:
    - When the player ground pounds, He displaces the ground differently depending on the material (Paper will fold/wrinkle, Cardboard will dent/squish, and felt/fabric will have a small bounce) this will make your player feel like he has weight in the world
    - The collectible "Coins" can have a shinier appearance. I understand that they're supposed to be buttons but they look flat and like they don't belong in the world. I think you should give them a gold or metal material/surface. Also when you collect them, there should be a small satisfying gold sparkle/twinkle like it magically entered your pocket followed by a nice coin in-bag sound (this will give the player visual and audio feedback that the coin has been added to your inventory because right now it looks like it just gets consumed).
Again awesome work, You should post more about this Paper Tech.

    • @WhyKev
      @WhyKev  Рік тому +1

Thank you so much for taking your time to write all this out! I 100% agree with you that this could be PaperKlay's "it" factor. And yes, there might be some performance issues if there's too much unfolding happening, I think there's a possibility where I can unfold an area and around the corner it's already up, so from the players perspective it looks like everything has unfolded.
Some fun secrets could totally be used with the unfolding paper! Love that idea.
I hope to keep improving the paper tech, using some of your suggestions which I really like!
      Thank you for the ideas!

Great video I love watching the updates! Great quality! I just have one very minor piece of feedback, at 7:06 when the character is gliding the model looks too dark, it may be good to have some level of ambient light always on the character model? Just my idea! I think the paper tech seems cool and there's so much you can do with it, you could have a secret level where if you fly off a random edge some paper appears (but only if you get close to it).

I think that there should be a dedicated sprint button since it gives the player better immersion of control over the video game character, and can provide more precise control. It opens up new level design and game design possibilities with varying jump length based on speed, precise falling off platforms onto another and also other in-game variables that can be modified by the players speed in creative ways. But in my opinion the immersion of control aspect of sprinting is enough to justify sprinting in a video game where you control a player character. No wonder so many games have it as a feature, even though it seemingly doesnt make a difference, but it really does.

I don't know the personality of you character, but if it's some kind of "carefree", wholesome chicken, this could fit very well. Maybe even give it a fitting expression, as it has never seen something so interesting before. Just a thought that instantly popped to my mind.

I'm a game designer, and this looks great, I think it would be great if the terrain unfolding triggered by an action done by the player, making it not only a visual element but a mechanic too, this way you can use it in many sections, for example, the collectibles could be paper parts that you have to throw into certain spaces to fill them with paper, unfolding new parts of the level, or coins could even be changed for paper parts to be more thematic and unique, and these paper parts could be used to build the boat to the next level itself, this way the objective its pretty much the same but it feels more thematic and unique.

    Suggestions for the Coins situation:
    - Spend Coins on Shortcuts in the World
    - Spend coins on things like "boating" or other similar open-world activities
    - Spend Coins on cosmetic items (just a suggestion :D)
    - Spend coins on closed doors that then open cool places.
    - Spend coins on a "store" that is in the game world somewhere, there the player can then e.g. meet other similar characters like him (Npcs) interact with them, eat coffee and cake etc. A kind of small village or street food, or whatever you want to call it. (my fav. so far)

I think you have the platforming down. Its fun, smooth, and sometimes fast. You can even make collecting an item give temporary speed.
But what about npc enemies? or if its non combat heavy it needs npc enemy environments that reset the player.
Last thing is, all it needs is a backstory for the character, some interesting sound effects, a cute soundtrack, and definitely some npcs to make this more than just a level platformer.
Games like Spyro had Moneybags, and allies around the map. You don't need a huge rpg, just a few fairytale residents in these maps.

I played the demo version, and oh, my heart warms with every moment! I felt a cozy intimacy, yet I yearn for more. I deeply missed explanations for all the abilities and movements. Despite being immersed in this welcoming atmosphere, I still feel a pulsating void. It's as if the world I explored lacks life. Animals made of paper, butterflies dancing in the air, birds singing their gentle melodies, fish gliding in crystal-clear waters, the wind whispering through the leaves... life in all its manifestations. I long for more animated NPCs, vibrant animal lives, peaceful creatures, and the wind moving through the maps.
Ah, and something I sorely missed: collectibles! I wish you would take a look at the incredible "Super Mario Odyssey." I'm certain that this inspiration will fill the stages with even more enchantment. I also miss the replay factor, the ability to explore every inch of this vast map. The more I explore, the more items and collectibles I would find, and the more life would overflow! These collectibles, or even the in-game coins, could serve as a kind of "currency," allowing us to purchase amazing outfits and special effects. Just imagine, interacting with other creatures and NPCs with special animations!
Ah, and another detail I miss is the particles! We need sparkling particles in every coin, every collectible, and in all existing and future items. Every time we grab an item, a coin, we want to see magical particles shining, gleaming, enchanting our eyes! We want a true spectacle of particles! And why not add confetti as well? Imagine the stunning beauty, a true celebration of colors and life that it would bring to the game! With these additions alone, you will make the world you created even more inspiring, thrilling, and brimming with contagious energy!
Beyond the particles in every item and collectible, when it comes to coins, oh, what a marvel! Each coin emitting a charming sound, echoing musical notes in the air. Do, re, mi, fa... a true concert of joy! And when you collect the coins in sequence, something magical happens. They come together in a melody, as if the game itself comes to life through music. Oh, how delightful to remember classic games like Mario, Rayman, Banjo-Kazooie, where each coin collection was a symphony of enchantment!
This musical addition will further enrich the gaming experience, bringing life and a unique sonic dimension. Picture yourself diving into this vibrant world, collecting coins and creating magical melodies with your actions. It's an interactive symphony where you become the maestro of this epic adventure! This idea will elevate the game to new heights, delivering an immersive and unforgettable experience. Get ready to dance to the sound of the coins and feel your heart pulsating in harmony with the dazzling soundtrack!

Oh wow what a loveley journey you took me on! So the demo is now "old" I feel like, it doesn't fully represent the final vision I'm going for. The steps I've taken to get there so far is this video where I'm updating the controller.
