    I used to pack our two freezers with meat, because we had a rural homestead and we hunted, as well as buying at local butcher. But storms and vandalism took out entire county's electric grid several times a year. We lost so much of meat, which was big financial hit. So, I started buying canned hams, canned chicken, canned tuna, canned stews, manwich, etc. Cost much less, still gives protein and long shelf life. Added jars and envelopes of gravy, Lipton onion soup, spices, herbs, instant potatoes, etc. In hard financial or food scarcity times or shelter-in-place times...you can still make good meals and feed your family. You could also barter.

    How cute is that bday thing!! I love it! You actually remind me a lot of an aunt I had growing up-so sweet and organized and had an amazing stockpile and really thought me stuff too. I work part-time at Walmart and we get 25% off one shopping trip up to 400$ every year-most people go for gifts or electronics, stuff like that-I always stock up on canned goods, especially canned tuna, chicken, etc. such a blessing and savings. @@joyfullythriving It is actually a flavor of Knorr bouillon which is a mix of tomato powder with chicken bouillon.
      Knorr also makes a dried soup pouch called SOPA. The SOPA has tomato powder with pasta flavors. I take a Knorr SOPA pouch and add a few other ingredients to turn it into a low cost meal. For example, Knorr SOPA tomato with elbow is a simple start for a Chili Mac. I can just add chili seasoned beans for the meal. Knorr SOPA is 56 cents a pouch in my area.

    Hi I appreciate your effort to educate. I wanted to add if you don't know already how to store fresh eggs from people how raise chickens. 5 gallon bucket 2 quarts of water ( I think) 1 ounce of hydrated lime. One bucket will hold about 300 eggs for about 1-2 years. There are screw top lids you can order to prevent evaporation. Also I learned that grocery stores with a bakery might give you buckets for free. Sister stay safe.

    • @pennysimpson4707
      @pennysimpson4707 2 роки тому +1

      I think it's 1 ounce per quart.. also to make vinegar. Use large glass jar put in lots of dried apples, figs or cooked gluttonous rice which ever kind of vinegar you want to make. add distilled water. Cover with cheese cloth and put in cool dark space for about 25-30days. Take out fruit or rice and put on lid and let ferment. Wine vinegar is just to leave bottle open with cheese cloth and it will turn to vinegar.

    • @joyfullythriving
      @joyfullythriving  2 роки тому

      Yes! The bakery is a great source of free buckets - or often a dollar or two. That's how I got my food safe ice cream buckets for free too. Lots of places to look, if you want buckets for free!

    • @SirenaSpades
      @SirenaSpades 2 роки тому

      @@notsurewhatscookin8691 Yes, I have done this, it's common to do here in Northern Maine and up in NB, Canada, you still put the mineral spirit eggs in the fridge (or cold cellar), they will last 9 months or so, you can always do the float test to check. Another way is to do pickled eggs - and there are many ways to do that, you can look up recipes. You can also just freeze eggs, by breaking open each egg, and dropping open each egg into a ice tray, once frozen, put them in a zip lock and make more as desired.

    You have an amazing amount of food stored. By the way, the pasta should be stored in a clear plastic storage bin because mice or rats can chew through the paper boxes. I saw a video for making non-toxic mice/rat poison using one third each of flour, sugar and baking soda, rolled into balls. That will protect your food that's not in plastic or cans because rodents will eat that first and it kills them.

      Thanks for the tip!

      Wish I had that mouse/rat recipe a year or two ago when we had a major problem with mice. I also store my extra pasta in one of the white buckets. Anything not in a jar or can that is "stockpile" pantry vs. everyday pantry goes in the buckets. That said, I DO shop the buckets before making my grocery list. I have a white bucket for Rice, one for Ramen Noodles ('cause we bought a huge box of them at one point), one for dry beans, one for flour & sugar (there are only 2 of us and I don't like to store as much of those, plus I have some flour and sugar in those No. 10 cans).

    • @isabelpimentel1415
      @isabelpimentel1415 Рік тому +3

      Do you use any liquid to be able to form a ball??

    • @Cynthea_Lee
      @Cynthea_Lee Рік тому +4

      @@isabelpimentel1415 just enough water to make em pasty, anything else can go rancid if the rats don't eat all the balls you make. If you don't want to make the balls you can put the same ingredients in small snack baggies and lay them around (they will chew through the baggies), OR buy some dollar tree food containers, cut a hole in the side of them and put the powder mixture in those.
      Another mixture is cornmeal (jiffy is best because it's sweet), and baking soda 1-1 ratio's, adding sugar later if they are ignoring them, for other items in your pantry.
      PS 1 place the majority of the bait along walls, and in dark areas, with the smaller amounts actually near the food, if the food is in well lit and well traveled areas. Rodents travel along the walls, and they would rather be in the dark areas, and will mostly avoid well lit, and traveled areas unless they are getting hungry, and or bold because they are feeding young in a nest.
      PS 2 what kills the rodents is the baking soda, they can't burp, and baking soda makes gas. BUT baking soda is harmless to cats, dogs, and small children making this bait safe to have around them.

    Thanks for the tour. I have been canning for over 10 years so it is interesting to see what other people can. This year I was able to can some new things since we had a great garden year. They included pizza sauce, sloppy joe sauce and BBQ sauce.
    I learned not to waste green tomatoes. If you cook them down with vinegar and some garlic and then blend them it makes a great sauce for on burritos, etc.
    Also if you grow zucchini you can make them into pickles just like cucumbers. You can also shred or chunk zucchini and can it with pineapple juice to make a mock pineapple.
    I also canned homemade cranberry sauce with discount cranberries after thanksgiving last year.

      I ripen green tomatoes in my root cellar, but I have also put them right in my salsa batch before and canned them up when I haven't had enough. But preferably, they easily ripen with no problem in a cool dark place, enclosed - I use a crate fully lined and covered with either cardboard or newspaper, with at least one reddening tomato, but I have heard you can put a banana in with them, the enzymes ripen them.

    Just to reiterate what others have said, that date is the best by not the expiration date (you mentioned it with the olives and the can says best by). As long as the can isn't damaged and it isn't bulging then it'll basically last forever. Smell it first as that is your best guide. Honey lasts forever. They found some in a tomb in one of the pyramids and found it was still good. Same goes with pure maple syrup.
    BTW once you get your stockpile to where it's "like having your own grocery store", you have to be mindful of replenishment. My wife constantly forgets to let me know she's taken things until they're empty which defeats the purpose.

I am in a cold environment, your results may vary.. but Alaska Prepper, another channel, does a lot of tests right on the channel opening stored food that's perfectly fine. My theory is manufacturers stamp the food just so people will toss it and they can sell more. I can remember when cans never had dates at all.

    Awesome tip about storing water and unused ball jars that you use for canning! Going to keep that in mind really great tip. I love the shells your father-in-law bills you. I would love some just like that but I would like to put at least a half an inch lip on each of the shows just in case you have a small earthquake things have a tendency of moving and that little small little lip is going to keep the jars from actually toppling out of your shows. But if you don't live under or near where you get earthquakes that's something you don't have to worry about.

      Put the food separate from what you use day to day. Friend has two special needs young adults and they will waste anything that comes into the house. They open food packages and take a taste then dump the rest in the trash or toilet. He has to keep extra food locked in the trunk of his two vehicles which are in a climate controlled garage.
      Some tips.
      Stock up on the shelf stable foods that you use every day.
      Experiment with making meals using only your shelf stable ingredients.
      Look for just add water food options.
      Do not let yourself be ripped off by the pre- packaged emergency buckets. For example, one of those 30 days is around over $100. I have allergies so I can only use 10 of the family pouches that are in it so divide $100 by 10 and it comes to around $10 a pouch. Let's review those pouches. They are family size. I am single and live alone. 3 of the pouches are 1 pound bag of rice. A one pound bag of rice costs around a $1 at most stores. Is it really worth spending $10 a bag for rice? Two of the pouches are for the Mac and Cheese which equals 3 of the cheap boxes of Mac and Cheese with the orange powder. Those cheap boxes of Mac and Cheese are not going to cost you $20. It is actually 50 cents a box where I live so it would cost $1.50 to buy them. Then we come to the instant pudding which requires milk which is equal to 2 of the small boxes at most grocery stores. Then we round it out with dried soup pouches. You could go with 2 options for the equivalent. They have a low cost one called Knorr SOPA which is 56 cents where I live. Or you could chose the more expensive Bear Creek which is between $5 to $10 a pouch. Oh. I forgot the one pound pouch of pancake mix which is definitely not worth $10. You can purchase the food that is in the bucket for less than $20 so the value of the food grade bucket comes to around $80. You can purchase food grade buckets at any Hardware Store in the USA. Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Lowes, Walmart and other stores sell food grade buckets.
      Look at the fruit or vegetable buckets which came to over $200 last year. It contains 8 random pouches of freeze dried fruit or vegetable depending on which one you chose. Let's go with fruit. $200 divided by 8 comes to $25 a pouch. The total weight of the bucket is less than a pound. It was random because they ran out of certain fruits. You can go to Dollar Tree to purchase the banana chips. They have apple chips there as well. The buckets were mostly apple chips and banana chips. So 8 times $1.25 equals $10. So it comes to $10 in food and $190 for the food grade bucket. We can do the vegetable bucket with the same result as it is mostly dehydrated minced onions. It is around $1 for a little jar and there is no way 8 jars of dehydrated minced onion that can be found in the spice section of nearly every store is anywhere near $200. You can also purchase it in bulk from any restaurant supply store or warehouse store for a lot less than $200. Of course, they had a few freeze dried pouches that can be purchased for $1.25 from the Dollar Tree in the section with the nuts and trail mix. Carrots, green beans and others are available.
      I purchased locking bins from Home Depot. It has slots for a padlock and zip ties to lock up supplies. I zip tie one of the long sides to create a hinge. So that I can open and close it like a treasure chest. I put padlock on the other side after I filled it. I live alone but sometimes I have to be away and I live next door to a juvenile delinquent rehabilitation center which has plenty of escapees that I cannot trust.
