Lifeguards Rescue Lauderdale Swimmer in Hurricane Laura Surf

  • It took five lifeguards to rescue this swimmer, out after-hours in the surf kicked up by Hurricane Laura. They blew the whistle over and over, and finally went out to get this person. The undertow was so strong, even the lifeguards needed the surfboard to get in.
The everyday heroism and selflessness of the lifeguard team of Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue is amazing.
This was on the beach in Fort Lauderdale at Sunrise Boulevard at about 7pm on Monday, August 23, 2020.

That's a strong rip tide. I grew up surfing and that was one thing I always had to work on: staying calm when stuck in a rip tide. One time the waves were really big and it was getting dark and I lost my surfboard and had to swim in, but the rip wouldn't let me in. So I just went into calm breast stroke and took my time and let the massive white water push me in too. If you ever get stuck in one, swim along the length of the beach. Don't try to swim directly in and DO NOT PANIC. 80% of being out in the ocean is a mind game and you have to remain calm.

It does appear they are trying to fight the Rip, instead of swimming out of it. But I do not know how wide that Rip was.

Also when you’re finally out of the rip, you can utilize the white water by staying vertical as if you were standing. That will help the white water push you in.

Amazing work they do , but there trying to come back straight into the rip that took em out . Rip could off been wide yet it’s best to stay calm and float themself out than exhaust their energy . 👏 amazing job any how .

Precisely, lay back and float, watch the direction the sea wants to take you and work with that - do not panic, remind yourself how much you know, do not dwell on what you do not know.

@@SebastianRodriguez-lp4ph Interesting that the guard attempted to swim against the rip. Its obvious from our view that they are in a rip, but maybe it was harder for them to tell when actually in it. My guess is this beach usually doesn't have strong rips, so they didn't really know what was up.

Lifeguards don't get paid nearly enough. They put themselves in serious life or death situations. Have you ever had someone who can't swim well panic when they start going under and they jump onto your back? God bless these men and women.

Yea, been there - in their panic they try to climb on top of you to get above the surface. You have to pull them under to make them let go, then come up behind them, grab around their upper torso with one arm from behind, start kicking and stroking hard for shore and you have to yell KICK! in their ear until they get the idea. They get to it pretty quick, lol.

Saw him go under and come up thrashing. No one else noticed anything was wrong. I had to sprint fully clothed around a cove and out to the point. I kicked off my shoes, dove in and swam out 50 yards to him. I learned later he was an experienced swimmer who panicked after inhaling a little water. The downside? I soaked my wallet, lol.

There was an older gentleman who worked nights at our 24h Walgreens in my tiny town. He always made sure I got to my car safely, and he and I would have long conversations about family and faith and whatever he needed to talk about. He finally saved up enough money to go to Ft. Lauderdale and he was so excited to take his wife and son. On his first day there he got sucked out by rip currents while trying to rescue his son. The son did survive, but my kindly friend did not. I made the stupid mistake of going out during a storm surge once. Never again. I was young and thought I was invincible. I was humbled that day by the power of the ocean. The undertow was so incredible strong you couldn't even stand in water over knee deep without getting pulled out. Couple that with the fact that the incoming waves were malformed, white washed, but with incredible power. Even diving under you felt it's pull, and if you were unfortunate enough to be on the surface when it hits you are in for a tumble. It was scary AF and I was incredibly stupid. I should have known by the fact that none of the regulars were out that day. That should have told me all I needed to know. Always listen to an old wise surfer about the ocean. They probably know more about how the ocean behaves near the shore than anyone. I failed to heed that and I almost paid the ultimate price. Oh, and no lifeguards on duty that day, so yeah.

As a lifeguard myself I would’ve already been in the water with my fins and buoy the first 30 seconds of the video…I wondering why the Primary guard took so long to go out….Even with the naked eye, you can tell how strong that rip is in addition to how fast he was getting pulled out. Typically with this type of swell, the time he spent whistling the victim in could’ve been the difference between the victim coming home to his family or him disappearing under a wave.

In such a situation, trying to return is useless and dangerous.

Waves that don't crash fully like the rest of the waves around usually indicate a rip current, they may appear to create white water, but if its gone quickly then it didnt fully crash. The calmest spot is the most dangerous.

Actually some look like the very place you would walk into.

be careful not to go into the water with such waves. I used to be in a similar situation, I was drowning and I had no strength anymore, I thought it was over, but fortunately I managed to get out of the water by myself

I don't get what was going on here. They looked like they were stuck in one place. Wouldn't a rip current pull them out beyond the breakers and/or wouldn't the breaking waves wash them ashore? If a rip current, couldn't they just swim sideways out of it???

@@LuvThatDirtyWater former lifeguard here to educate you. The general advice is to swim to the side until you escape the rip. Or to simply let it take you out. BUT Depending on the topography of the beach swimming to the side may not be a viable option. Letting it pull you out and then getting picked up by a boat or jet ski is only viable if those are actually available. Some people don’t get that every beach is not the same
