- Umineko: When They Cry is a visual novel made by 07th Expansion. This video series is my retelling of the story as well as giving my thoughts and opinions about characters and events that take place. This visual novel is one of my favorite pieces of literature and I hope you enjoy my labor of love!

the most horrifying part of this whole thing so far is how everyone treats Maria. Obviously, i believe her about the witch stuff, but if I didn't, I would assume she was just wildly mentally ill. I cannot BELIEVE everyone just smacking her around for no reason! Like, no shit, she wouldn't grasp the reality of the situation. She's NINE.
It was incredibly hard for me to watch that scene with her mom assaulting her, while the rest of the cast just awkwardly side eyes each other, make some paltry excuses then leave. To me Maria’s vocal tic reads as something outside of her control, like a stim she uses to manage her emotions. So it just makes it worse that the thing she uses to comfort herself is being used as a reason to hurt her.
The way Natsuhi dealt with her actually was the best imo. Made it clear what Maria was saying was inappropriate with a look that meant she was extremely serious.
Although my assumption would be the same lol. Immediately was like, "sounded like me as a kid saying some out of pocket rude shit" As someone with autism, me and other autistic friends agree that being told something was inappropriate vs physical punishment/excusing it as shithead 9 yo, worked better because we knew it wasn't accepted instead of being confused why we were in trouble
As far as kids go, Maria is kinda insufferable ngl. PS: Doesn't justify anything done to her, though.
What's even more frustrating is even if they never believed her about the witches it should have raised alarm bells that someone is pretending to be the golden witch.
All they had to do was play along with Maria and she could help they understand the game the culprit is playing. But nope they abuse the child and die for not listening.
I think Rosa is a wonderful example of the themes of Umineko. I won't justify her. But I can understand her. A good character to lead you to the heart of Beatrice.

Just because the character is “Bad”- Morally despicable, doesn’t IN THE LEAST make them ‘badly written’.
A lot of people… Especially in like Twitter, for example… Would rather ‘cancel a problematic’ character, Then, see them redeemed. Which is understandable, I suppose {(with people who fail to see their own flaws, it’s much easier to demonize the flaws of others)… For the characters where redemption isn’t an Arc/ Possibility, they will experience.
I think; it’s important to remember that if that Character makes one upset if they evoke strong emotions when they commit.. certain actions, that’s good writing!

Reading the manga is substantially faster, has the perk of being visually stunning, and cuts out most of the fluff the vns have, for both better and worse.

@@clairelynnd I do hope you reconsider coming back to it at some point. There is no other video like this about Umineko. Obviously others have done whatever retrospectives but this was different. This scratches an itch that I think more then just me liked having itched.
It could become an achieving series if it was made to conclusion is all. Especially on watch time. I was there beginning to end and immediately went looking to see if you had done more. That's a hard thing to achieve on this platform to get anyone to do that. Like literally anyone. Imagine completing it and then having a playlist. It could go nuclear huge. When they cry is a very salt OR pepper thing on UA-cam. There isn't a lot of quality content that goes in on it like you did there. Maybe there is on like Higurashi. But not on Umineko at all.
It serves and taps into a very underserviced interest here on the platform and just from a growth standpoint and a bit of a begging standpoint I wouldn't technically be doing my job as a QA staffer without suggesting it is all XD. Have a good day!

This is hilarious because I am currently making plans to do exactly that, I'm only held back by lack of voices. call it foolish, but I've written off those who tried before me as the failings of lesser men and I am optimistic that I can dub at least the first episode in its entirety.

Maria being violently punished for what I honestly think is a vocal stim really upsets me. It’s likely a sign of neurodivergence and her echoing what people say to her is also something called echolalia. These signs are also present in children with autism. Imagine watching a mother beat her autistic nine year old daughter for a sound she makes to soothe and regulate herself. Sickening. And everyone just… brushes it off.
This was fire as hell!! I love how every story bit was kept in the context of this episode and there wasn't any foreshadowing to the other ones. Plus, the voice actors killed it and your narrating was super engaging. We need episode 2!! Keep up the great work!!!

Finally finished watching this, and it was a great explanation of the 1st arc. Everything the anime didn't cover is here, so the story is starting to make more sense.
Wondering how much Umineko's going to relate with Higurashi, which I've already watched all of, and read most of the manga of the main 8 arcs.

Didn't the anime sum (rush) this whole arc in like...1 or 3 episodes?!
This is proof that they could have unraveled their own mess in 3 hours worth.
Given one episode is 30 minutes they could easily have made 6 episodes worth of adaptation, and ending the season with 6 more maybe covering half of the second arc and leave an exciting cliffhanger there.
Or just a 6 episode OVA teasing the story by just showing the 1st arc.

@@filypa101 telling a story and showing a story arn't the same thing. They can't put all this dense information into a visual medium without taking way more time. Anyone with even the smallest amount of experience with a visual medium knows you have no clue what you're talking about.
...I just have to...This is not in any way a dramatic retelling. It is a CLINICAL retelling meaning an analytical deep dive devoid of the stories dramatic features. There now I feel better.
To be honest even though it may seem extremely disturbing to many, I justify Rosa most of the time. I mean she didn't even had a childhood that most kids have.... She was always bullied by ALL of her siblings... Verbally by Eva, physically by Krauss and Rudolf flirted with her friends and they were leaving her to flirt back with him... Her husband stole her money, left her with debts and a problematic child (and I am not saying that in a bad way of course) and disappeared.... her daughter was calling her ''Black witch''.... she had the guilt of killing Kuwadorian Beatrice just because she just wanted to show her the outside world.... In the end in my opinion Rosa is just a bullied victim who was weak to break the chain of abuse. A parent who doesn't know or haven't learned how to love by anyone....how can he or she show love to his/her child?? And maybe that's why she was spoiling her by buying her everything she wanted. She was trying to show Maria that she loved her on her own way. Everyone acts differently. Some are strong and overcome their problems and some others don't. I of course am not okay with Rosa hitting Maria but I can understand the reason she acts like that. She is also my favorite human character in Umineko.

A pleasant surprise to see the only good recap of episode 1 was done by someone that I have watched speedrun quite a bit! I stopped reading halfway through episode 7 for some dumbass reason, and am trying to recap before I finish it. I've recently started getting into umineko and im still reading through the first episode: legend of the golden witch and im starting to get interested this video managed to compress hours and hours of one segment of umineko's story into a 2 hour video And Im all for it :D

Thank you for such an amazingly detailed video. I've only managed to get through the first arc in both manga and anime form and have not been able to make myself invested in the plot. Higurashi is one of my favorite pieces of fiction ever so I wanted to explore Umineko, but thus far it's been really challenging for me. I'll definitely watch more of your videos on it when they come out though, you have a very clear concise way of explaining things that makes it feel less daunting to explore. I unfortunately have zero time and bandwidth for reading the visual novel, so I appreciate the explanation of the important details the anime and manga left out. I hope learning more about the story through your explanations helps me get a deeper understanding and appreciation for this series!

There's 3 versions of the sprites: the pre-2010 originals, the Steam release, and the PS3 release sprites. All versions have the option to read with the original sprites, and there's free mods to read the Steam version with the PS3 sprites plus the voice acting that went along with that version.

God, the scene with Rose hitting Maria made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable. As someone who was abused, it hit too close to home. Even if Maria was being a brat about the rose, most of the argument wasn't even ABOUT the rose. It was about Rosa not liking that her daughter says "uu-uu" alot which I don't think Maria can even control but okay. And the fact that everyone just fucking left her with her physically abusive mother because they didn't want to get between a "parent and child argument"?? I fucking hated it.
Ik right? I'm kinda just watching this and don't know stuff about umineko but the way she absolutely freaks out about the vocal stim specifically feels really disturbing. And calls into memory how people very often treat autistic kids with vocal stims

As a relative newcomer to When They Cry, it fills me with joy to still see new WTC content whether it be memes or lets plays so many years after they ended. I’m anxiously awaiting for more of Ciconia to drop so I can start reading it.
This is cool cuz I finished ep1 and then had to stop playing for a while, so this will allow me to go back and take some notes to maybe solve the mystery on my own!

“Has no friends because of her weird magick obsession?” Damn this Maria character sounds relatable.
Also, I liked to imagine that the title to this story, with “Umineko” instead of “Higurashi,” would mean something like “When the Sea-cats Cry,” since as far as I knew, neko always meant cat & umi meant sea/ocean… And that there would be some kind of kawaii underwater creature called a sea-cat (or I thought maybe they was what they called catfish or something), & that the same way in Higurashi, chapters or scary scenes are always punctuated with the cries of the evening cicadas, the scenes & chapters in Umineko would be punctuated with whatever noise the sea-cats make… Alternatively either some kind of horrible screeching that would be hilarious if it was used to try to set the atmosphere for a Higurashi-style game about mages, or else they’d just go “nyan, nyan” adorably like a neko, except kind of distorted like they’re underwater.
Also, I have to say, beginning & ending every sentence with “UwU” is a huge downgrade from the cutesy character being Rika saying “Meep!” & “Nipah,” or even Rena saying “Hauuu.” But it is still an improvement relative to Hanyuu saying “Hauhauhauhauhau” annoyingly, in a way no sentient being in the infinite cosmos would ever do.
Please put out part two, I am never going to play or read this game but I love hearing people talk about it.
The scene where Rosa hits Maria gives me a vivid flashback of how my parents (my mom especially) used to smack me in the face hard whenever I cried due to injury/something bad happened/something unfair happened.
They always yelled at me for crying and I needed to grow up. Even when I was only 6-10. I was the eldest sister, and I was forced to grow up faster.

I really like the video, but Why would you just stop audibly speaking the scenes aloud in the middle of the story? You acknowledged a lot of people just like to listen to videos like this in your video, then stopped.

It's a good start but this is far from complete. That more people don't point that out is probably a sign that not many people who commented actually took the time to watch the video. The presentation is wildly inconsistent too, sometimes you leave ten minute blocks of the game in unedited, sometimes it's voiced by your friends, sometimes you use text to speech. It couldn't hurt to be more conssitent. Good start, though maybe you shouldn't start something if you don't plan on finishing it (you clearly aren't motivated to do it so don't pretend pls lmao)
