The amount of intermarriage in the Ptolemaic period is mind blowing. You say it was a family pole, which I quite like. I was more fond of saying that family tree has fewer branches than Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree.
The fall of the Berlin Wall is the first historic event that I remember, when I was five. Being German and with my grandparents living 730 meters from the border, this of course was memorable.
But I don't remember anything about the Fall of the Soviet Union two years later.
I remember being 11 years old at the time, and waking up in my own country, to the news. Everyone was gathered around the television set, like America had just landed on the Moon all over again, so I asked the adults what was up. That's when they told me that Berlin Wall had finally come down. It was a pretty big deal. I had been raised on Cold War Hysteria all my life, up to that point (I still recall the Atomic Bomb drills we had to do in Elementary School!). So the Berlin Wall coming down was seen by everyone as a predecessor to the fall of the Soviet Union, and the official end of the Cold War. Naturally, a year later, that actually came to pass. So you and I both witnessed some pretty monumental history!
In the video, Simon makes it seem like the Berlin Wall fell in WW2, just before Germany surrendered. But, the wall wasn't built until the 1960s, long after WW2 ended. I am so confused about how Simon could make such a mistake.
Honestly germany didnt deserve the partition thst happenef, and poland certainly didnt deserve eastern prussia for being conquered.
Catherine the Great was one of the first monarchs to get vaccinated for smallpox
You probably mean “inoculated”. “Vaccine” is a slippery term, these days.
Where there any anti-vaxxers around then?
Most Europeans were inoculated through contact with livestock which carried bovine smallpox. Thats why north and south Americans were so devastated by it, they didn't have domesticated animals that carried it.
@@theinsanepumpkincarver I'd be surprised if there weren't.
@@theinsanepumpkincarver bro if you’re anti-vax against smallpox you’re just done, just ask 90% of native Americans
The best-known escape from Alcatraz is probably Frank Morris, John Anglin and his brother Clarence Anglin that was portrayed in the movie "Escape From Alcatraz". The three did escape but their bodies were never found so it remains up in the air whether they survived the water crossing. There is some pretty interesting evidence that the Anglin brothers may have survived in hiding in Brazil, but nothing conclusive. The case is still open and active.
There's an episode of Mythbusters where they recreated the escape attempt based on all the evidence that was found and testimony from other prisoners. I believe they concluded that it was plausible they made it to land.
@@soupordave Yeah, I saw that one. They did the same basic thing on Expedition Unknown too and came to similar conclusion. It was definitely possible but extremely dangerous.
I've heard that the reason of priests not getting married is related to inheritance. The priest lives on the church's assets and what he earns is considered church assets too, as I understand it, and if he marries he would end up having to leave an inheritance. But this is something I heard a few times when I was younger, I don't know how true it is.
Legally, I can't imagine the Pope would be permitted to leave his position, or any of the Church's actual belongings, to his heirs. Unlike with royalty, none of the Pope's possessions (not even the clothes he is wearing the vast majority of the time) are really his. So honestly, he could leave exactly NOTHING to his heirs, because of his lifetime of technical servitude (a Pope is considered a servant, more than an actual leader, in the Catholic Faith). So, regarding inheritance, the problem the Church might be seeking to avoid is the BURDEN of having to leave the Pope's children with potentially nothing at all. Which would only inflict hardship on the loved ones of he who was the Church's worldwide leader for decades! What a terrible taste that would leave in a lot of mouths.
I've heard the same thing, and it wasn't about the pope's children, but smaller churches and land being inherited by the priest's children.
I don’t understand the premise of the original video. For example, “last death of WW1,” well yeah we’re not going to see that again because WW1 has finished. You could say “last time Winston Churchill smokes a cigar.” Of course because he’s passed away!
Great reaction though as always!
Yes, the original video isn't clear about what is he specifically talking about...because if he's talking about some event, well... Everyday in the history of the world won't ever happen again... O.o
This. The video would actually be interesting if it had found actual events that are unlikely to happen again because of circumstance, not just because the event has been defined in such a way that it refers to something that is already over.
The only things that were relevant in the video would be the smallpox, the married pope and the manned moon landing, and even of those I would only agree with the smallpox one. Though even there, there is the very real possibility that one or more governments have secretly kept samples for possible future biological warfare uses.
Voices of the past has great videos to react to. their video called "5 most Disastrous Accounts of First contact in History" is a great vid to react too .🤓
A great channel indeed :)
Great channel
You will love astrophotography! It's a wonderful mix of precision, science, and technology.
btw, it's a near law of nature, if a stargazer gets anything new, one week of rain...
If your son likes moon stuff I would recommend the tv series For all Mankind, it's an alternate history story of what might have happened if the USSR landed on the moon first, it's got great political intrigue and everything in space is awesome, the downsides is too much domestic drama and having a bit to much modern politics but it's still worth watching.
Oh, it's been an utter delight to see your adventure around London. My well wishes to you, Chris!
My father proudly kept his smallpox vaccination card his entire lifetime. We had a family friend who was paralysed from the neck down by Polio, contracted before the vaccine had been rolled out.
If you want to keep reacting to Top Tenz, I'd highly suggest the one they titled, "Top Ten Battles Won in Odd Ways and Against All Odds." Talks about a lot of historic battles that, at least in my opinion, aren't talked about too much...and at least a couple entries are things that I don't believe you've talked about on your channel before. It'd be nice to get some of your insights while you react to it.
Discovered this channel in 2022 and couldn’t be more happy to do so. Love the content and learned a whole bunch just watching. Also a big reason I began my own. Keep up the great work, can’t wait for more!
While the Ptolemaic family tree is shocking, the Konbaung family tree (the last royal family of Burma/Myanmar) practiced brother-sister marriages- with the addition that the king or heir would often have dozens of half-sisters as secondary wives as well. This continued on until the mid 19th century, when they were deposed.
Awesome video!
11:55 from my understanding, Peter was likely married and widowed before being called to be an apostle. Which Catholics are okay with, i.e, married man, widowed, then becomes a priest. (Although it’s usually recommended to wait until your kids are self-sustaining)
Actually in the Eastern Rites, married men are allowed to be ordained priests. They are not allowed to become bishops, however, for primarily practical reasons. Managing a family and a parish simultaneously is difficult enough, but managing a family and an entire diocese is near impossible.
Yeah, when the whole Moon Landing thing came up, first thing, I was like: "uhhhhhh..." lol Even if the Artemis missions were not currently a thing, to say that humanity will never land on the Moon again is stretching incredulity a bit too far.
Regarding the Smallpox thing, during the War on Terror, I actually served in the Navy. And one of the irrational fears swimming around (especially after the "Anthrax" thing, in 2002) in the military was the thought of Osama bin-Laden somehow getting his hands on biological weapons to use for terror, and Smallpox was one of the fear factors. So I actually was VACCINATED against Smallpox, in 2004, while aboard an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf! Smallpox never got used (of course), but I get to brag to all my friends that I'm one of the most recent recipients of the vaccine. lol
Probably means for Apollo missions
@@stephenpriest2766 One of the earliest examples, that I can recall, of "media fearmongering." And it affected a lot of people. Luckily, it turned out to be nothing at all, and society is starting to see through the media's constant hyperbole of disaster after disaster.
I'm pretty new to the channel and this is the first video I've seen as it's been posted. Thanks for such cool content and for spurring people's interest in history!
it gives me goosebumps to think that in my lifetime i will most likely see another human being set foot on a planet other than earth.
If you ever come to Germany with your sons you have to visit the Starpark Westhavelland, it's one the darkest places in Europe and the darkest place of Germany (in the night of course) from there you have a phenomenal view on the nightsky.
Have a great trip, can't wait to see some of it!
I hope you had a great time in Luxembourg and Bastogne! I had the pleasure of visiting those in 2019 when I was stationed in Germany. Wonderful burial site and museum, very moving
Cleopatra was Greek, born in Egypt, and actually learned the Egyptian language although her first language was Greek
Hey brother. I have been watching all your new and past videos. You have range of history that is impressive.
Congrats on your first telescope! Enjoy!! 🔭🌠
Hope you’re enjoying your vacation!!!! All the best to y out and your family!
I remember sitting in German class in grade school the morning after the Berlin Wall started coming down. My teacher grew up in Berlin and watched it being built. She had family on the East side that she had never met. We watched news of the events and she wept. That is one of the most vivid memories I have. It was significant in the events alone, but her story made it even more meaningful.
With the Catholic Church I also heard somewhere the whole celibacy thing was also meant to prevent any dynasties in the church's hierarchy. Which ended up kind of happening anyways, example being the Borgias. Despite that the Pope remained mostly an elected position so they weren't just a dual emperor to the Holy Roman Emperor, even though they functionally kind of were. I don't know it just seems like monarchy with extra steps but I think I'm really oversimplifying it.
It’s also not practiced in every rite. Many of the Eastern Rites allow married men to be ordained to the priesthood. The discipline of priestly celibacy is really only in force in the Latin Rite, and seeing as it is not a matter of Sacred Tradition, it is possible for that discipline to be changed.
the fact that the ptolemy dynasty could make children for that long is a small miracle
Hi, Chris, another interesting video. I hope the Europe trip is going well. Mentioning Simon Whistler I'd like to refer you to another of his channels Today I Found Out and the video What the German public knew about the Holocaust during WW2. As we approach Holocaust Memorial Day it would be an appropriate opportunity and I'm sure his opinions on one person agree with yours. It's good.
Luxembourg is amazing! Enjoy mi compañero.
Hey VTH, love the content!! Was wondering If you'd be willing to react to the Nuremberg Trials and the Tokyo Trials videos by history scope. Each are about 20 minutes long and I feel like you would be able to add some great context!😊
Safe travels Chris! I'm excited for your original content when you get back!
nice cool reaction, hope you have a good trip
So last smallpox death was within my lifetime too, in August 1978 I was just a few months old.
I’m curious what you’d think of the show Mysteries at the Museum, it was (or is, I don’t know if it’s still running) a show about unassuming objects at museums then they dive into the story behind it. As a kid, that, the World Wars, and Greatest Tank Battles were some of my gateways into history
Yes! I watch re-runs of these on Pluto after having watched them when I was a kid aswell, great damn shows!
@Damien Surnameless, ah yes, the good ole days, back when the History Channel was good and respectable
That show fucking slaps harder than a Latina mom. I fucking love that show
@pointless Videos, which one,? I mentioned 3 of them
@@Supernova2464 mysteries at the museums
2:34 Artemis II is going to be a manned flyby of the moon actually. So same mission as Artemis I, but with humans onboard.
My 3rd Great Grandfather Henry Spotswood Painter died from smallpox after he came home from the Civil War and his son and my 2nd Great Grandfather Patrick Henry Painter was a survivor of smallpox but he was left blinded in one eye. He got the smallpox from his father. Patrick was 4 years old
Would love to see ur reaction to EARLY Christian Schism EH.
Another very interesting video. I’m glad you added that caveat at the end. I would argue that many of these will be repeated albeit in a different place. It could also be argued that it is very US-centric. What about the last execution by guillotine in France (1977!). Maybe 10 is too short a list to cover the topic properly!
15:47 There's debate on that date as well, I've seem people arguing that the great war in fact didn't end in 1918 and that the wars that happened in the following years in places like Hungary, Ukraine or the Balkans are part of the same overarching conflict.
I looked it up and the last hanging that took place in the US, was in 1996 in Delaware. It was a guy who was convicted of murder by the name of Billy Bailey. He was the 3rd since 1965 and the last as of this year (2023) to be hanged.
Stay safe Chris!
The event I was thinking of when I read the title was something along the lines of another wartime truce, similar to what occurred in 1914. It's something I wish we will see again (I was hoping for a Eastern Orthodox Easter Truce of 2022 that never came), but unlikely.
Perhaps sports isn't as important to make the list, but I can almost guarantee you we won't see another father and son playing on the same MLB team hit back to back home runs. (Griffey and Griffey Jr. 1990 - Seattle Mariners)
The Ptolemy-tree makes the Habsburgs look like saints.
As someone from there.. I appreciate you pronouncing "Bawdimore" correctly 👊
I never heard someone being so excited about Luxemburg bevor, it’s a bit weird but since I’m living right next to it.
Also I agree, it seems strange to me to say things like "a man walking on the moon" or "a person publicly executed after trail by the US or gov" will not ever happen again. Things can change. People can decide to do both things again. There's nothing but ourselves stopping us.
theres a county in southwest virgina named after charles carrol. i lived there
for a year
Owensboro is about an hour from where I live
Nice mention would have been the Christmas Day Truce in WW1. Very rarely ever happens and shows the best of humanity in its darkest times.
I think for No. 10, he meant we will never see someone being considered the "last" person to be on the moon because we ARE planning to establish a lunar station and eventual colony.
This Top Tenz video was posted back in August 2014, and back then they weren't thinking about going back to the moon. It is an interesting video to see how much Simon Whistler has improved in his delivery and confidence.
Elizabeth and Philip were 3rd cousins..her father, King George VI, was Queen Victora's great grand son through her son King Edward..Philip was Victoria's great, great grandson through her daughter Alice.
A) "The last surviving signer of X" seems an odd one to include. True of basically every document ever signed. But okay, they did a lot of last person from event X. Since event X is unique, there has to be a last person involved, so yeah.
B) Hopefully Rainey Bethea remains the last person publicly executed in the US. Unfortunately there is a non-trivial part of the country which would like to see that change. Side note: maybe justice was much more swift then, but so was injustice.
Very cool
Hey, what are you going to see in Luxembourg? I'm half Luxembourgish half-Portuguese so I'm just curious
I'm subscribed to TopTenz myself! he also has another side channel i think you might find interesting called Biographics where he covers various people each in their own separate video, like Betty White, Alan Turing, Remus, Adgail Adams, the crazy man JPJ(John Paul Jones) himself, Nathenial Green, and quite a few others and even Opportunity
One of my 3rd year History courses detailed medical history and how close Canada was to not making the smallpox vaccine mandatory due to anti vaccine protest in 1919. It is such a crazy accomplishment that we were ever able to eradicate it.
I remember being in 3rd grade when the last WW1 veteran died. That’s when the school taught us about having a flag at half mast.
The list has interesting information, but is all either things that aren’t really that unlikely to happen again, or just that it could never happen again because it is something specific (eg. Titanic, signing of Declaration)
Hi. I’m Jeff thackston, missionary to Nicaragua. I’ve been subscribed to your channel for a while, I’ve had a question for a while. You’ve mentioned ministry before. Today, perhaps many other times but it failed to register, I heard you mention Olive Hill. I think I’ve heard “elders” before as well. Putting my detective skills to the test… I tried to private message you on Twitter and discord … and I just wanted to tell you that I went to Kentucky Christian in Grayson, just up the road from Olive Hill and spent many an evening at Smokey Valley truck stop (before it closed), studying. I surmised that we might have a lot in common. More than anything, I appreciate the time and effort you put into your excellent content. I’m not sure how we make a conversation happen outside of public comment section… but if you are interested, I would be fascinated to know about how you came to making videos on history (a passion of mine for years).
Very cool, I have a lot of friends who went to KC U. I almost went there myself, when it was still KCC.
@@VloggingThroughHistory I went when it was a C as well. About every 3 years I get back to the States and usually try and time it to homecoming. Many of the 70s/80s grads meet up. Keep up the great work on UA-cam and blessings.
Interesting note about Catholic celibacy. This is only a rule in the Latin Rite (Western) aka Roman Catholic Church. Eastern Catholic priests from rites such as Maronite, Chaldean, Coptic (not to be confused with Eastern Orthodox, these rites are under the authority of the pope) can marry.
Must not heard of the Hapsburgs
someone call Jim Lovell He deserves a chance to walk on the moon after what happened on Apollo 13.
I was station in Germany with the Berlin Wall came down, also when GermAny was untied and also when the USSR became no more.
…
I'm subscribed to all his channels
I remember playing Street Fighter 2 when it came out and being confused as to why it said "USSR" for Zangief even though it didn't exist anymore. I know it was programmed before it was dissolved but they never changed it in any of the updates haha
Great time to have a telescope, you just have Venus on sunset along with Jupiter these days. I hope you're in a more rural area and are able to avoid light pollution :)
It'll be interesting if you can do a video on China Space Program versus America's Space Program. Since National Security it's always connected with the space program, but also I could see China being the first people to land on Mars
I think not allowing families at the highest levels of the church serves the same purposes as Eunics back in the day, minimizes legacy ambitions and certain families from taking over the Church.
I believe that after Adrian II, refusing the papacy twice became a sort of unspoken tradition for centuries, much like only serving two terms as POTUS after Washington refused a third (until FDR, after whom it was enshrined in the constitution)
I lived through the collapse of the Soviet Union...I was all on 1 year old at the time, but I lived through it! First historical event I recall clearly, even if it's not something that I think ends up in most history books was US bombing raids on Yugoslavia in the mid-90s.
I’m actually trying to become an astronaut right now. I’m majoring in physics and math at NC State and minoring in aeronautical studies (Air Force ROTC) with the dream of one day becoming a test pilot. After that I want to walk on the moon if I’m lucky enough.
You need to get your kid the game, Kerbal space program. Awesome space physics game!
He loves it! I’ve played it for years.
As I understand it. If the escape was after 11:30pm the current suggests survival. Before 11:00pm, death. It is thought they went into the water between 11:00pm and 11:30pm.
Just realised that the Ptolemies are like the Netflix TV show Dark.
I'm surprised that you, a historian, are unaware that one person did escape Alcatraz. Sean Connery
I am surprised that you did not say anything at 14:11 about the Soviet causing the fall of the Berlin Wall ending WW2
Hey Chris, awesome your boy is into astronomy. My profile pic is a photo I took. I’m fairly local to you. There’s a fantastic astronomy park in Geauga county called Observatory Park. I’m a physicist. If you have any questions about getting started, or the type of equipment to look for, I’d be happy to help.
The Ptolemies had nothing on the Hapsburgs

artemis 1 is unmanned orbital mission Artemis 2 will be manend but orbital Artemis 3 wil be manned and land or take a payload and not land depending on HLS progress
I’m just here wondering where Chris got that nice sweatshirt from😂😂
My understanding is that smallpox had a mortality rate of 30%, while being inoculated had a 0.5% chance of death. Early inoculation, I mean.
6:17 That might not be entirely possible. In the states that have the death penalty there are some that still have executions by firing squad, gas chamber, and even hanging. Though they can only do those if the person being executed requests to have that done to them.
When is the last time such an execution was carried out?
@@elijazfrazelsassafraz3100 I believe a couple of years ago there was an execution by firing squad. I believe maybe over five years ago?
We're never going to see another person sign the Declaration of Independence? Bold statement. 😆
If you want for your son Homemade Documentaries made videos of the mission of Mercury', Gemini, and Apollo missions, even a lot of Space shuttle missions!
I got beef with Simon Whistler since I saw his Ben Franklin video and said he was an English spy🤬😂 still love his channels though
Incestuous marriage among Egyptian royals was common long before the Ptolemies. That's why the Ptolemy dynasty adopted the practice in the first place.
Vary interesting
People not dying during executions in the US still happens all the time.
It's kind of intentional to make the whole thought of being executed more scary. Clearly falls under "cruel and unusual punishment", but that's not stopping states from clinging to it.
Apollo 10 could have legit landed on the Moon if they really wanted to. The problem was getting back to orbit in the LM and docking with the Command Module.
I will go technical here for a bit: the Lunar Module had 2 components; the Descent Stage and Ascent Stage. The former is the stage responsible for getting us to the Moon's surface. The latter meanwhile is responsible for getting the astronauts back to orbit after their mission on the surface was done.
The Descent Stage had enough fuel to make a landing. The Ascent Stage however was "short fueled" according to Gene Cernan, meaning that it wasn't filled to full capacity. Also, Apollo 10's ascent engine was lackluster in efficiency compared to 11's lander, and it lacked the thrust needed to lift off the surface.
--
Edit. Regarding the Artemis missions:
Artemis 1's purpose is to greenlight the Orion craft for manned missions. Obviously it was an unmanned test.
Artemis 2 will fly the first ever humans beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 to the Moon, but they won't land. They will be doing a manned lunar flyby by swinging around the Moon and back to Earth.
Artemis 3 is the encore. This will be the one to land humans on the Moon. We don't know how yet, since a lunar lander hasn't yet been developed (I guess it's SpaceX's Moonship that will do the job? Idk), but it will happen.
You could just do Simon videos and never run out of material. He's gotta be the most prolific UA-camr
I don't know, if anyone has already sad it out (probably yes, I just didn't find the comment), but Nr. 6 is just wrong.
It was said in the video, that the romans incorporated Egypt into their empire. I order to not disrupt the lokal traditions (and everything that ties into that), the roman emperors also adopted the title of Pharao. Thus Kleopatra was not the last Pharao.
Ptolemaic marriages were much more closely related than Habsburg ones (which were mostly cousin marriages, mixed with few uncle/niece ones) and yet after same number of generations, Cleopatra was depicted as beautiful and very intelligent and Charles II was completely ruined by inbreeding.
In the future I wanna visit Germany and hopefully later on actually learn the language
The change by the Catholic Church required priests and bishops to remain celibate was actually about land ownership. As they could give their land to their children, and since it was no longer owned by priests etc... the church could lose ownership or access to large portions of land.
The pope at the time also believed that the acquisition of wealth and the ability to pass it down to their descendants was leading to corruption within the church. If they couldn't have children, there would be no purpose in acquiring excessive wealth.
This was the last and standing opinion of the church on celibacy, but they did go back and forth throughout the centuries.
Thank you for interpreting the discipline of celibacy in a charitable way. It indeed have pros and cons, and the church decided (especially for those who belong in the roman-rite) that it is more beneficial for their priests not to be married. And because it is not a dogma nor a doctrine of the church, in theory, it can be change. There are cases, like in eastern catholicism, where married men can be ordained as priests, and I think the married priests from anglican churches are also permitted to remain as such, even after deciding to convert to catholicism.
The gigachad of the history channels
My dad was in the army who's station in Germany and he did witness the Berlin Wall goes down.
