#History #Reaction
I knew Oversimplified would help. They're not stupid. They know the reaction channels bring a lot of traffic to their channel and pretty much everyone wanting a reaction already loves that channel to begin with. They had nothing to lose by helping. Hell will probably even gain more.
Exactly. Thanks to Chris and Mr. Terry, I watch all the Oversimplified videos at least twice.
Especially to sam, sam are one of the people who actually dont profit directly to the reaction as he mainly send the revenue to the owner of the video
@@aldrinmilespartosa1578 yeah Sam Nixon is a great guy…. Love his Indian history stuff as an Indian myself.
@@mauddib696 Love his indian videos, very informative.
@@mauddib696 who?
I love Oversimplified even more now after hearing this great news. I’m very happy for you Chris 😀
I agree wholeheartedly

In doing genealogy, the child mortality is just heartbreaking to notice. The brother of my 5th great grandfather and his wife had 15 children, which included four sets of twins, and four of them didn’t live to age five. (Interestingly, only two of the surviving children married and only one went on to have children of her own, so with all of those children, they only had three grandchildren.)
I live near a church that has a 200 year old cemetery with complete death records for the community. Looking through it is fascinating yet heartbreaking. Not just the children, but the women who died in childbirth. It has only been since my parent's generation that a couple could realistically expect to not only grow old together but to also have all their children live to adulthood.
My mother great grandmother or something like that had seven children. In about a decade six of them and her husband died of a typhoid epidemic, leaving just one son who is my ancestor.
BlueJay's been one of my favorite history channels for a while, ever since I got recommended one of his videos after watching an Unsimplified video. He has a humorous-but-informative take on things that actually makes me want to learn more.
Of all the Blue Jay videos to start out with, this is one of the best. I've watched it 12+ times already.
I'm glad to hear that Oversimplifed was so quick to respond and distance himself from Adrev. I'm also glad (though surpised) to hear that YT actually ruled for fair use for once; they don't have a great track record of obeying US law in a lot of cases.
Adrev? What's the story there?
VTH has said it in both this video and the last one. They're filing copyright strikes against Oversimplified reactions, despite never being asked to by Oversimplifed.
One of my granddad's anecdotes from his youth told me all I need to know about the mining industry. During WWII he had the choice of going to fight or down the coal mines. He joined the army, feeling that it offered better odds of survival.
I’m glad oversimplified saw you as you are. A guy, who loves to talk about history.
Of all the reaction channels you meet the definition of fair use best. You don’t just make little quips. You add information to the videos you react to. I learn more from your videos than just what the original teaches.
About life expectancy. I’m from a developing country. Even only half a century ago, my dad side grandma has 12 children, 2 died before able to walk and 1 died before 6.
Even with child labor law, working in family owned farm wouldn’t get enforced also.
And yes, he walked uphill both side to school every mourning.
My great great grandfather moved to Canada from New Hampshire about 1807 durring the economic depression caused by the Embargo Act to set up his blacksmithing shop on the road between Kingston and Montreal, later he died durring the 1830's cholera epidemic. One thing about about the chaos of wars and epidemics is that ridged class systems tend to crumble away and families are scattered around into unfamiliar situations.
On the topic of Victoria age London and Cholera I can also reccomend Extra History: The Broad Street Pump . The story of a real John Snow and how he basically invented a statistic method to proof that cholera spread through water. The series has an extra episode that describes paralell & later developments in particular the Sanitary Movement so don't miss that fourth one should you watch the topic.
I really enjoyed that episode when I caught it!
Blue Jay is a great Channel! Genuinely exited to see you reacting to more from him.
I am AMAZED that UA-cam ruled in your favor. They have had a miserable track record of accurately deciding what is or is not fair use. I hope this is a sign that they are getting better. I'm very happy for you and your channel!
It's so out of character for them that it actually makes me wonder exactly what YT saw going on. There was something else impacting their decision behind the scenes; it may be that Oversimplified also contacted them and made their position clear.
To be fair you only really hear about when they don’t rule in the creators favor and that’s probably far less than when they do rule in their favor. People don’t usually say “it’s good” they usually say “it’s bad”. When I was still uploading to my channel I had 2 takedown notices and both times they ruled in my favor. So my channel has a 100% success rate.
As a chemical engineering student, that transport phenomena comment went really unnoticed. That class is a weed out course and is extremely difficult. It’s insane to know that people of that era knew the differential equations I now cry myself to sleep thinking of
Kudos to Oversimplified! I’m glad you sorted everything out
Yay! Congrats on your win! I am such a huge fan of both you and Oversimplified. I am glad that Oversimplified reached out. I sent them a message, as I am sure many of your other fans did. So, I am so glad that that they are really cool with your react videos. Thank you for making such great content.
Blue Jay's two part series on Radiation and Nuclear history is worth reacting to. It's a nice mix of science, history, and dark comedy.
Really happy to hear the good news Chris. Glad you get to keep your great channel running.
My grand parents and great grand parents worked the coal mines in Apollo, Penn. The stigma of being a working class Italian immigrant child was real, even in the 30s and 40s. They made their way up and ended up buying the mine plus the forman's house they used to work at after it was shut down. The entrance was tiny and they had to block it because family members got stuck rummaging around in there.
Gotta love when vlogging through history posts on my birthday! Love this channel.
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday old man! (Don't care if you're not old i call everyone old on their birthday lol) I hope you have a great one!
You handled the potential closure of your channel with such class! Then went on to display grit and determination in the idea of starting a new. Cheers!
Brilliant video. My grandfather worked in the Copper mines in Rhodesia with barely any safety equipment.
i have a friend who paid for college by working as part of a freak show as a barker type character but it was a more modern style one and the "freaks" made pretty damn good money and were treated very well and they did it because they found it fun and enjoyed preforming
Glad to hear over simplified realised you've made them a lot of the money over the last year or so!
Love this video. I want to do some more London history stuff
This is great news! I’m very happy for you VTH!
23:02 Fun fact from a city I live nearby, Reading PA, Charles E Duryea was consistently testing his own gasoline powered hill-climbing carriage between 1900-1907 in Reading known as Duryea Drive.
Oversimplified helping you is awesome! Love both you guys! My favorite channels! Wish you both the best. Thanks for the video!
the reason the Victorian period sticks out so much especially is for one just the length of it, but two, also how much the world changed and modernized during this time
at the start of the period, iron clad warships weren't even a thing and by the end of it, no navy worth a damn would have anything but ships built of steel and run by steam engines
Really good by blue Jay to mention that Graham bell first patented the Telephone but didn't invented it. That honor goes to Antonio Meucci (Graham bell basically stole his plans and claimed them for himself) and Johann Philipp Reis who also invented the term "telephone"
There is no evidence for Bell stealing his designs.
Just another reason to love Oversimplified
Speaking of London and Cholera, one of the first Extra Credits History series I saw is called the Broad Street Pump about Cholera outbreaks in the UK.
I'd argue this is a proper reaction channel, actually takes the time to reference the other channels and videos while actually contributing to the topic instead of spewing generic garbagio just so they can ride some coat tails. Love this channel
Fun fact: the Uranium Oxide glassware wasn't dangerously radioactive under normal circumstances. They emitted relatively small amounts of alpha radiation that isn't really able to get through skin even when you're holding it, much less clothes when it's just sitting at a distance. What was dangerous was when they broke and you happened to breathe in small bits of radioactive dust that would break off from the fracture line: at that point, the alpha radiation was being emitted inside your lungs and would have nowhere to go besides your organs. By comparison, though, you took in a lot more radiation in Victorian London by breathing in the smog, which also included radioactive carbon particles released in the process of burning coal, than you did from your uranium glassware.
This is all true, just adding that the coal problem is still around.
Cheers to Oversimplified. That was pure class. I really enjoy both of your channels.
I was waiting until you would cover a BlueJay video! Can’t wait to see more! Thank you, Chris!
I wonder how many infant deaths were caused simply by babies putting those common household objects into their mouths. His sense of humor makes the topic both entertaining and relatable at the same time
Great video as always VTH! I recently saw that the Operations Room has been releasing some high quality videos that I'm sure you'd love to react to!
Man you add so much insight. Well done 👍
Also, the funny thing about the John snow and sewage thing is that the Jon Snow actor’s (Kit Harrington) ancestor invented the toilet.
I don't know how other major cities dealt with Cholera at the time, but I know Toronto had 'death pits' to deal with all the victims. To this day, if there is a heavy rain, certain things (like teeth), can make their way to the surface in what is now a downtown public park.
Crazy to hear an Indiana County, PA shoutout! I went to elementary school there in the 2000s and we went on a field trip and had whole learning units on coal and its local history. The mine they have set up for kids tour groups is appropriately spacious but has some sections left to historic size. Your description is correct they are very small.
I love Bluejays channel! Can't wait to see more reactions to them
I've been hoping that you would react to some Bluejays videos for a while now, glad to see it happen!
Same
Keep up the great work Chris. And great job by oversimplified and thier class
I actually requested this video to you and im so happy you are doing it
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
I would like to recommend CGP Grey's Rules for Rulers, highly suggest you watch it.
I'm happy he kept the ad in. I'm sure it continues to support the channel
I'm happy to see some blue jay! Enjoy your reactions! Cheers!
That GPU on Amazon in the video was put up by a scalper, but for what it's worth the MSRP on that card new is around $2000
I’m so happy you’re finally checking this channel out! Very much a cross between Sam onella and oversimplified imo
just wanna throw this out there: corsets are not damaging unless they are the wrong size and if you tighten as far as possible without breaking in your corset first and working up to that point. people still wear them today (including me). theyre great back and breast support.
Good to hear things are being resolved
One of the most significant inventions of the Victorian period was the railways, which started in the years of Victoria's reign. Of course the steam engine was invented before the Victorian era and was very important for mining, initially tin and copper.
There used to be the saying king coal. It powered everything, it generated the gas used in street lamps called coal gas and the railways of course shipped millions of tonnes of it as well as using it. Steam was still used in large quantities into the late 60s in Britain for the railways before diesels took over (with many poor designs and electric trains too). Until fairly recently coal was still used for power stations, with most having converted to gas by the middle of the 2010s. Coal is still used for steel production, but the days of that are numbered.
Let's goooo!
I was waiting for so long for you to react to bluejay!
Answer to prayer. Thank you Oversimplified.
I've been waiting so long till you react to BlueJay. Hope to see more, has channel really has some unique content.
Love this era fascinating , those narrow cobbled streets with its oil lamps , horse and carriages , always think of Dickens and a Christmas Carol when I think of victorian London , we do have Westminster Hall the oldest part 1300s I think maybe older ? . Great video .
On the whole freak show stuff. Look at TikTok or viral videos of Karen's in super markets or stuff like that. We have freak shows today really the main difference is it's less exploitative and the people we're laughing at are doing it to themselves
I see it as almost like flipping the dynamics. People who exploit the working class or the poor don’t have the same clout anymore, and are being exposed for their entitlement.
I’m so glad your doing blue jays Video he’s awesome. He did two interesting topics
He did a video on the Russo Japanese war called the “ dumbest Russian voyage” His Russo Japanese war video on it has a lot of similarity to what’s happening in the ukraine war. and he did a video on worst ways humanity used radioactive energy.
Maybe you should do a reaction video too blue jays Russo Japanese war video it’s interesting how bad the Russian navy was. Ironic considering in the civil war the Russians gave a little naval aid to the union
I second this. I laughed so hard at the video of the Russian Baltic Fleet.
I second as well! One of my favorite videos on UA-cam :D
Would love to see the reaction.
@@Sunstreaker2k5 the craziest thing I saw was when Russia kept shooting ships thinking there Japanese but were not but when they get to Japan and see a ship that was Japanese, they assume it’s a Russian ship. How does that happen
@@imph1l yea the Russian navy literally slaughtered themselves before even going to japan
That one is great, I wish he'd go deeper in depth on that one. The sheer amount bad luck, incompetence, and shenanigans is mind boggling, only for it all to end up sunk by a brand new "Baby Great Power".
I straight CACKLED when I saw the League of Legends reference - now that's next level funny. Also love the VTH Channel!! Keep it up good sir Chris!
11:30 When you talked about your childhood, I remember one version here where on hindsight is definitely a con. But there was a showcase of so called "Amazonian Woman" The right master if that was his title was said to be married to her. Then for the show she would eat a live chicken...in front of us. So yeah as time goes, they kinda mellowed down
Love his channel. I can't wait for you to do his video on the Russian Baltic Fleet's journey.
Fun fact: coating your head in kerosene or petrol is a surprisingly effective treatment for lice.
Just make sure to wash yourself in abundant water right after that and to not do it more than twice, otherwise your hair will fall FAST.
You had me worried for a minute with the strike. Glad you are doing better
Good stuff! Thank you!
Blue Jay has a lot of funny and interesting vids, the one about the baltic fleet is one of the best in my eyes.
finallyy!!!! a blue jay video
This is really good episode.
Nice to see you react to one of my most favorite channels.
Glad to hear the good news! 🎉
Well, that is great news! I was sad I wouldn't have your Oversimplified reactions to watch anymore. But I'd have been even sadder if your channel was taken down.
Kudos to Oversimplified for working to intervene.
My first thought when I saw the headline, "bring a ton of penicillin." And that's only rule one lol.
This dude ends up reacting to all my other favorite history youtubers. I love it.
Happy to hear that it all seems to be working out. Very nice to hear Oversimplified did the right thing.
Couldn't help but be reminded of Internet Historian's Man in Cave video with the coal miner bit
I would like to think the messages me and a few people sent to Oversimplified helped make them aware of the situation. Of all the people reacting to oversimplified I say you should be the safest of the bunch because you actually add something to them. You aren't just reacting, you are teaching.
Thank you so much for mentioning the average life expectancy as it relates with infant mortality. You explained it very well.
Finally, a Blue Jay video!
You need to watch blue jay!
They are amazing!!!
Bit late to comment but the comment you made about the freak shows made me remember of monty pythons life of brian when the guys aproeches asking for change to an ex-leper and then he explained how this jesus guy just came and cured him of his lepresy and complains about how he doesnt know how to make a living
Just the mention of Cholera takes me back to playing Oregon Trail- binged 1st through 5th edition a few years back, reading up on tangents in NPC dialogue from the Donner Party to George Washington Bush.
The “9-5” wheeze at 17:05 got me rolling hahaha
Glad to hear you have your roots from Scotland, its a slightly better place now 😅 I enjoyed your video finding your roots here and glad you enjoyed yourself here but living in the UK at the moment is kinda...divisive to say the least. Maybe not Ohio but thinking of packing the family into bags and going...somewhere. just don't know where. Keep it real love the videos with the extra info
13:07 In a college painting class, we learned about “Mummy Green” - a paint available in this time period made from (what else?) ground up mummy dust. Since learning of this, it always freaked me out to think that some of those beautiful Impressionist paintings that everyone loves to stare at could potentially contain particles of dead Egyptian people from thousands of years ago… 👻
I work in water treatment, I think people aren't aware of how many lives have been saved by chlorine.
Please do the Russian Navy from Blue Jay, i love that video!!
At first I thought this was another oversimplified video. Nice to hear about oversimplified though!
BlueJay is one of my favorites tbh, mainly because of the humor
Speaking of cholera an outbreak in the early 1850s late 1840s canceled the first ever planned Ohio State Fair
14:50 The crazy part? They (the manufacturers at least) _knew_ Scheele's Green contained lethal levels of arsenic but just didn't care.
This guy has a wonderful video on the baltic fleet you should watch
7:46 Thank you. one of few people that actually clarify low life expectantly was due to infant mortality. I mean even in the middle ages if you lived to adult hood it was not out of the question to go into your sixties.
15:09 - as a matter of fact, legal regulations were often very far behind the scientific research, and the manufacturers putting toxic and poisonous substances in their products continued to do so long after it had been proven and publicly announced how lethal those ingredients were. And the reason why they did it was BECAUSE THEY COULD, as there was no legal regulations stopping them from it.
I'm glad things are getting sorted out with Oversimplified.
Heck yeah, great channel to react to. Also props to Oversimplified.
Yes finally your reaction blue jay
Hi Chris! I found your channel about a month or so ago, and have been absolutely addicted to it. Binging through several videos while sick, so thank you for that, and for all the content. Plan on checking out the gaming channel as well.
Egyptian Railways used mummies to fuel their steam engines in the 19th century.
My boi Bluejay! He made it!
That USB sound at 13:23 made me check my own computer 😄
