I love it! My friends all laughed at me when I told them that I use an old Craftsman cast iron table saw for a welding table, and I have emailed them links to your video. To my friends, "In your face!" Your clamping ideas are good, I'm going to try them.
I used to have a welding table I built from a table saw top, it worked great. I love the idea of building a belt sander with some of the left over parts.
man this is great - honestly this will work for 80% of people who need to weld and at legitimately .5% of the cost of some of those fixture tables that are being sold, I think that's fine.
I got exactly the same saw table and have used it for over a year. I just added the Harbor Freight table on top of half of it for the clamp hardware. Served me very well. Cost $80 for the saw.
Awesomesauce, Great idea , see them on marketplace all the time. Love seeing the younger generations being frugal and repurposing old stuff. Just saved me about $1000. Keep posting and i would love to see the belt sander.
I chuckled when I saw the saw! I have been using my Craftsman table saw top (identical to this one) as a flat welding table for years. I didn’t take it off the stand but reinforced that to keep it more ridged. Yes you do have to keep it clean or you have some small barbecues! I would like to see a belt sander made too.
Wow, I agree with many others below, what a GREAT idea and wait there's more, it's very affordable and expandable. There's always a ton of these around cheap or free. Great video, thanks so much.
Great video Alex! That’s too funny you mentioned making the belt sander with the leftover stuff because that was my exact thought when I first saw it all on. The table. I’ve been thinking about making one for the past couple months just trying to figure out the easiest and best way to make it happen. Definitely some good parts there to get started!
Great idea!! I have that same table saw sitting in my patio that was a freebie from CL and now it will be my free welding table. Thanks for the idea and video.
I bought an 8’x5’ welding table with schedule 80 frame and it’s too big for my shop. So I have a welding table in my driveway outside the barn…which is kind of handy when I’m working on our heavy equipment…all for 130 on craigslist! Great Idea…many of us have one of these laying around! And you get to use the electric motor for something else! You can also use the elevation and tilt mechanisms for special weld positioners.
This is an old video now, but I wanted to message and say that I found one of these table saws for free on craiglist, so I basically got a free welding table! Thank you very much for sharing such a great idea.
I have a whole playlist on this table build. We do clamps, magnetic vise, and build a belt sander. And I think there's a couple more videos to come because I still have parts left over 😎 Thanks for watching supporting channel.
Thank you for sharing this great idea. I too have a Craftsman table saw from the late 80's that needs to continue buying its footprint in the garage. It will never be a cabinet quality tool so doubling as a welding setup table is perfect.
I did this with and old saw years ago and worked great. I found the cast iron shed spatter better than most new tables. I was planning to make almost same video in the future. I will see what I can do differently. Great video. Subbed.
Love this idea. I've been looking at the pro ones and they start around $1000. I just love to tinker and will be doing things around the homestead. Also being a knife maker, the idea of making a belt grinder is appealing so I am going to start keeping my eyes open for a old table saw. Ideas for improvements: Use wing nuts on your stops for ease of use and maybe epoxy the bolt on the inside so it's 'captive'. Add a set of wheels on one end and either removable legs or have them shaped like "H" and have them fold toward each other but one nest inside the other and be able to use the wheels to cart it like a wheelbarrow. That would allow you to roll it around alone and probably get the non-wheeled end up onto the tailgate to then pull it into the bed of a pickup.
Thanks for the inspiration, just came across your channel a few weeks ago and was looking for a decent weld table, I just picked up mine this morning for $40!
Genius, absolutely Genius, I will have to try and make one to install in my new shop, what a great economical way to make a flat welding table, thanks from Nova Scotia 🏁
My dad has that same table saw in his garage that he hasn't used in years. Might have to see if he wants to get rid of it now that looks like a fun & practical project
Love the idea. trying to think of a way to setup different fixtures repeatedly (i.e. install setup 1, remove and install setup 2, remove install setup 3, then go back to setup 1 accurately)
I’m wondering if the table saw with the electronics would be a sufficient welding table with the same stand? Not sure if there would be stability or grounding issues?
Picked up my third free saw total area is 11' x 27" lines up and 352 pounds mix of solid deck and grid. I'm thinking solid as the "main table" surfaces and grids can quick connect for reconfigurations as needed. One of the three motors has a wire wheel on the shaft and had sketchy wiring via extension cord to glass fuses in a breaker box. I may have saved a life getting that apart.
Great idea! Do you ground yourself to the cast iron table itself, and if so, does this create any issues for you since cast iron does not conduct as well as mild steel? Also, what do you think about combing 2-3 of these together to create a much larger table? And lastly, are you welding onto the cast iron?
I have not had any trouble with grounding. I have definitely thought about connecting multiple together to make a larger table. I did not weld to the cast iron to mount the legs. I bolted some flat bar to the threaded holes on the bottom of the casting and welded to the flat bar. Thanks for watching. Appreciate the support 💪😎👊
hmmm, $30? I guess we aren't including the materials? I was wondering how you'd secure a top alone, for less than $30 in materials by itself. Thanks for the vid, wish I had a free tablesaw top laying around here.
First few seconds I was like "I got clickbaited👎" then I realized that's not a bad idea. I actually have a saw like (that I got for free) that in my back yard just rusting away. Great video and awesome idea!
I like your idea repurposing the cast iron table saw top. Then recognizing the potential of the remaining parts to be used in the belt sander project. A nice 1hp 1ph 110v 60hz 1750rpm electric motor is very useful, and new they're over a hundred bucks.
A lot of welding tables have a grid of holes like your one. It reminds me of an mft top used in woodworking. If i were to get a sheet of metal and drill the same holes and slapped it on top of my mft, that would work as a welding table in a budget, right? Particularly as i could reuse my mft clamps and dogs. Thoughts?
Another idea: 1 inch thick particle board with sheet metal on top. Not very clampable and can burn if your weld is too hot, but has done the job for me for many years.
Cool idea, I’m going to try this. I’m new to welding and have been looking for ideas of a mobile work area that won’t break the bank. Belt sander idea is cool too. Looking forward to the next video.
Question I'm new to welding, I have a mig welder and I've read that cast iron is not the greatest for migs. I have the same craftsman table saw and am planning on making it into a table like yours. The question is around is my HF mig welder gonna work on this table saw top?
@@amcustomfab so did you have to use specific wire? Basically do you think just normal mig with the normal wire you get from HF will work fine welding that table top to itself (wings) and to an angle iron base? thanks for answering, sorry if it's a dumb question.
I honestly watched this expecting to see some of the same idiotic hacks that are rampant on UA-cam. Instead, I was treated to a very clever idea. For someone who is just getting their feet wet with welding, or when space is limited, this is a sound and reasonable way to make a welding deck on a budget. Nicely done!
I think a belt sander would be good I built a 26 inch belt sander and it is one of the most used tools in my shop and very easy to build I used the wheels off of a lawn mower deck to run the belt on I put one on a lathe and flattened a little where the belt would run true works like a store bought one
Awesome repurpose. People sometimes do not know what they throw away or get rid off. The older equipment is much better then newer ones, more solid. I've come across a lot of good stuff I have repurposed in so many ways, so this video is right up my alley. But this is an awesome way to make a welding table. I just started welding and came across this video. You grabbed my attention by the build under $30 title, I thought you were going to use some thick ply and cover it with a sheet metal, even doing that can be expensive when you purchase raw materials.
Not sure if the old stuff is necessarily better. I'll definitely vouch that it's heavier. Usually a plus. Found my last cast top saw at the garbage transfer station. That'll make four as now, highest $= $30. Router table, designated tenon cutter for log rails/furniture.
If you made a disc sander then you could use the saw tilt for the sanding disc and keep your work table level, plus with the screw adjustment your angle setting would be accurate and easily repeatable☺.
I have been looking for my first welding table, and aside from the cheap folding HF one, I was looking at ~$230 on the low end for one. Saw this video, popped up marketplace, and there's one of these for sale right by work for $50. We will see if I can make that happen instead. Thanks for the awesome idea.
