Then I get to Boot Camp and Im one of two E1s there. The other one was a bit of a jerk off, so that made sense in his case. Whereas upon asking how other guys were E2s and 3s, I heard that they did the test, or had less college credits than me, or did ROTC in high school. The worst answer was "I dont know... Got to my duly station after that, again, only E1, out of like 100 E3 and belows. I know this channel is for future soldiers but as a mother of an only child that has decided to join. I need to know how I’m supposed to help him when I’m having a hard time knowing he is leaving soon and he has never been away from me! (My fault because his older brother died at age of 11. So as a over protective mother I have held him close to me.) I just don’t want to upset him by showing my feelings in my letters to him when he is at boot camp! I just don’t want to cause him more problems. Thank you for all the videos it has helped me to sorta understand what he might go through. I just want to be his biggest fan and support but I don’t want him to worry about me worrying about him. And when I write I tend to put my feelings out there. Don’t get me wrong I want him to be the man God created him to be and I know he is very devoted to what he has chosen to do! He has wanted this ever since he was 5 years old! He hasn’t changed He has always told me this is what he wanted to do. He will leave in August. Thank you for all the helpful videos it’s a blessing thank you
I would say theres nothing wrong with putting your feelings in your letters. My advice is to keep the feelings positive. So talk about how proud you are of him and what he's doing. And things of that nature. I'd avoid saying you miss him or anything that can make him miss home or miss out on what's going on outside of his military training. He needs to remain focused while at basic training. So try to keep that in mind. I hope this helps :)
The pride that you will provide to him during training via correspondence and final graduation will help carry him through his first term in the military. Keep him focused, and NOT distracted on things like "missing home". This is critical. The US Army will either keep him motivated, and succeed, or he will wash out. Based on his personal goals it seems more likely his own goals will carry forward the day. I speak from experience not only as a retired officer and former NCO, but I served as a basic training and advanced individual training company commander whom as part of one of my commands trained recruits from their arrival into the US Army.
I know my mom was worried when I joined and I heard her cry a lot once I had a phone call with her in between my basic training. I did not even get to say good-bye to my parents as I entered basic. Weird situation, but it happens. As I graduated and went across the world for my first station, she cried again. I was the first in my entire family to do anything like this. After five years of me being away, she got used to it. What really comforted her is that I told her that I was just going to do a job at a different country. It is going to take a LONG time to get used to it, but I think it is something you as a parent need to accept. I think a lot of people would agree that is just part of being a parent. In order for your child to be the best person he/she can be, the parent needs to let go. Not doing anything is actually doing something. Your son will miss home and miss you as well. He knows that you are worried and concern already so you do not need to always remind him.

My recruiter has actually been very honest with me and hasn’t tried pushing anything or any job on me. I feel very lucky. I’m going into the national guard here soon and he’s only been good help.
Adding on to what Matt said, do you due diligence to research certain jobs each branch offers! A job you may enjoy might not be in Army, but may be in the Navy, Marines, or Air Force. I can tell you from experience that it is okay to be confused on what you want to do, but it is A LOT better to just do some personal research before talking to a recruiter. In terms of commissioning, besides ROTC and OCS/OTS, you can also apply to any of the military service academies. The top academies are US Military Academy (Army), US Naval Academy, US Merchant Marines Academy, US Coast Guard Academy, and the US Air Force Academy. Cadets get PAID while they earn their bachelor's at these schools. I am a 2016 US Air Force Academy grad. I also make videos geared towards the Air Force and being an officer. Check them out!
Matt, What I really like about your channel is that you've discovered your strong knowledge base and share what you know, becoming a subject matter expert in your videos. Well done. My basic training was in 1989. Your videos have brought back many memories of that time - mostly good memories, though I'm sure I didn't think that at the time. One thing I came away with was that drill sergeants are a special kind of people. I enjoy what you're doing - keep it up.
Infantry is great, but the smart move is to think about what you want to do after the military. What's a grunt going to do in civ. Life?... You can probably earn a lot more if you learn a job. Think someting like mechanic, medic etc.
I'm sorry, that is such a personal thing, you can't expect a stranger to answer that for you. If you couldn't join the military, what kind of job or career would you choose? If you can figure that out, (or at least a general idea), then think about what job in the military would best prepare you for that. Bonus points if you can find a career in something that will still be possible with a busted knee or back just in case.
My daughter had a great recruiter. He was vary patient. She had a degree in mathematics. She did not know what she wanted to do. He told her to start researching the jobs and just checked in on her every few days. After a few weeks she made her decision. 35N and she is in basic right now. While he could not help her decide, he was very kind and patient.
I told my recruiter I couldn’t see out one of my eyes. He said: can you see out the other one? You should be good. RE-3E Admin Sep. I did learn how to fold clothes and make a rack though.
Its funny to me that he says “don’t just say I wanna shoot guns” because my mom was in the army and she chose her mos by them recommending a job and she asked “do I get to jump out of helicopters”.
The answer would've been no. Because she's a woman. Recruitment for MOS's like Military Police has probably taken a hit since the US government ended the women in combat ban. MOS's like that is where the wannabe infantrywomen would go.
I wanted to go for Infantry but my recruiter stopped me, as a female I couldn’t have anyway in PA. But, he was right and now I’m going for Military Police after I graduate college this May! Definitely do research, great video Matt!!
@@Raccoon_Chic you forgot you can easily go up in rank, and you can easily become an officer when you come out. You also can always get your degree as well while in there

Thanks Matt! I'm constantly changing my MOS choices, and military branches. Even when I'm sticking to the Army, I went from 11B, 25B, and all that. I'm gonna stick with 31B Police Corps for now.
No matter what you choose when joining....be in shape. And as for today's military, do your research on what you want to be or do, like he said. But fitness is a big plus. Can't say it enough! Everybody gets smoked, the difference is being in shape or not, while being smoked!
My first recruiter was great (when I was looking at reserves) , he took my interests and what not and chatted with me alot on was able to give me really good job suggestions.

Many thanks.

I’ve been getting myself prepared to join the Army by losing weight and get fit so I’ll be ready. Thank you for your service Matt 🇺🇸
Thanks for all the advice Matt, I watched your videos before and during my enlistment process. I got exactly what I wanted, 35m option 40 contract. I ship to fort Jackson on Monday for BCT. Super excited and a little nervous, but I know I'm mentally more prepared because of your videos. (PS: I know you aren't supposed to post ship dates, but this isn't my real name or main account so I figured it's all good)
So I am a recruiter now. We don’t sign anyone up for jobs the applicant picks the jobs and it depend on their lines scores for the ASVAB I’ve seen people want infantry and it’s not showing in the system. Everyone picks there own job on the army. And bottom line I tell everyone is if there isn’t a job showing you want then you don’t have to join. You pick a job before signing a contract unlike the other branches that you need to sign a contract before you see what jobs you can do.
USMC here. I was very wary at first of recruiting in general. I had a bias (from movies like 'Stripes' and 'Private Benjamin') that recruiters were little more than snake oil salesmen silver tongued devils working on a used car lot. ROFL I'm VERY pleased to report that I was TOTALLY WRONG. My recruiter, SSgt Jeff Massey was nothing like that. He was honest, forthright, and answered all my questions honestly and completely. My fears and concerns were addressed head-on. No promises were made or broken. No pie in the sky possibilities were mentioned and the seriousness of the undertaking was crystal clear. I really respected and liked him and he did right by me. Overall my ACTUAL experience vs. my preconceived notions were diametrically opposite of one another. For the boots thinking of signing up, my 1 piece of advice is: NEVER LIE. Whatever ______ "it" is you're trying to hide or minimize is eventually gonna come out and SNAFU everything and everyone involved. So just man (or woman!) UP! Just OWN it, address it, and move past it. There's NOTHING you could possibly tell your recruiter that's gonna flip their script y'all, so just get it outta the way. Good luck to each and every one of you. Our Nation needs you, and we're all grateful you're considering protecting us. It's an Honor & Privilege BOTH ways- a fact you'll ONLY understand and experience if/when you complete the process and commit yourself to the journey. Semper Fidelis.
One thing I talked over with my recruiter when we first met was, in regards to MEPS, that confidentiality laws are your friend. Injuries and illnesses you had over 7 years ago are redacted from your existing records. If there is no record of it, it never happened, so you don't say a damn word of it to anyone.
MC-130J Loadmaster here. If you have your heart set on a specific job, be willing to wait until they have an opening. It's a common tactic recruiters use. They'll say "Oh you want [specific job code]? You'll have to wait a month or two for that to open up." If you want the job, tell them you'll wait for it. More often than not, you won't be waiting nearly that long.
I know what he's saying doesn't apply to every recruiter. But mine when my friend brought me to, I said I don't know what I want to do, she asked what I like and helped me narrow it down to what I want down.
My recruiter was actually very cool and gave me some valuable advice on how to conduct myself at MEPS, we spoke for 3 1/2 hours about why i want to join the USMC and all of the other things. all I know is I'm totally looking forward to Parris Island !
Whenever I planned on enlisting I did research and infantry was what I really wanted since airborne is a huge goal of mine and I figured infantry is my best bet to actually be able to do jumps after the school/training. My recruiters kept throwing out different jobs for me to consider like tank crewman, cav scout, and some other stuff and I think it was cool for them to try to help open up my mind but I did put in hours and hours of research on various jobs so not all recruiters are bad, don't be afraid to talk to them just follow Matt's advice and so research first and prepare some questions.

@@DevilDaRebel that's if you even get put on a line unit, and/or deploy, and/or get into a firefight. The chances of which, these days, are super slim. Oh, and rectal temp dudes in the field.
Here is some important information and insight of WHO is supposed to do the job and be responsible for answering questions regarding OFFICERS at ANY recruiting station. It does happen, frequently and NOT a mystery. That person is the RECRUITING COMPANY COMMANDER, a US Army RA Captain. If a candidate is already qualified (education, age, etc), there are options to redirect to outside sources not just to OCS, but ROTC, however they are handled completely differently than traditional recruiting. It completely depends on individual circumstances. I also handled inquiries regarding direct commissions for areas such as medical (AMEDD), JAG, and scientific as well, which were FAR outside most RA/USAR/ARNG recruiters understanding including the recruiting company first sergeant (the most senior 79R recruiter). If an recruiter feigns ignorance of this type of information, they are either not doing their job, new, or bullshitting a perspective recruit to meet their monthly quota.
The other thing to keep in mind is be willing to fight for what you want. When I enlisted the first time, I took everything at face value and missed out on a bunch of things I could have gotten. When I went back in after a break in service, I sat with my recruiter and spelled out everything thing I wanted for coming back in. I recommend before sitting down with a recruiter, talk to a vet or current enlisted and find out what options are available and how to negotiate for them (kind of goes with the whole "do your research" thing). At the end of the day, your recruiters job is to get you to enlist- they are not in the business of career counseling. If you are willing to enlist for less than what you COULD have gotten out of the deal, then that is on you. :)
Alex Diaz I have a channel sharing my military journey and giving advice to those wishing to join the service it would mean a lot of you Che led it out and subscribed to get my channel going
When I was in the Navy I had temporary duty with a recruiter in my home town. I was responsible for taking the new enlistees down to the AFEES station for processing. It was about a half hour drive or so. And they had tons of questions. I would tell them that the worst part was the initial examination. Especially the part where you get an injection in the left nut with a square needle! Oh man! I wish I had a camera! You should have seen the looks! Navy guys! Always coming up with something remarkable! 🤣
Some good advice in this video for someone who wants to become a pilot someday as you have to become a commisioned officer to do that in the marines. Thanks for the video!
The Security clearance stuff isn’t just your stuff. I filled out mine for my Top Secret and I was told that my stuff was fine but...the investigators needed to talk to me about something else. Turns out my uncle (whom I have never met, nor had ever heard of) was in Jail in a foreign country for gun running charges.
The best way to become a Mustang (at least in my experience from the Navy) enlist and then follow up once you are in basic, AIT, A-school whatever your service calls it. Those people have the knowledge to point you in the correct direction.
When I was in recruit training in the Marines, I was stunned at how many guys had NO IDEA what they were getting in to. There were guys who literally did not read any of the materials the recruiters gave us, they didn't ask any questions, they didn't watch the recruit training videos or watch a movie like "Full Metal Jacket."
I wrote on my navy paperwork that I have adhd and my recruiter goes “do you have adhd?” And I said yea and then he asked again and I said “no” and he said “glad you got the point”
My dad retired a master chief. My brother pretty much had no choice but to join the Navy after being expelled from college not even getting through his first semester. After his visit to the recruiter and signing the papers, he found out he was going to be peeling potatoes at some Naval depot in Bumfuck, Godknowswhere. My dad put in a few calls and got him into a career track as an aviation technician, believe it or not. Actually I'm kidding, he was going to be a rescue diver because he had been on the dive team in high school but he had been signed to some non-career track, my dad made the call and got him into the AWS/AWR career track. Otherwise he would have been out after his 4 years.

Oh, tell me about it. He knew I had college credits and ROTC from High School, but said nothing. I even offered to do the test to promote to E3 before Boot Camp... yet his response was "Nah, dont worry about that, just refer people and I'll promote you."
I guess my recruiter was cool and he just hooked me up."
Got to my secondary school after Boot Camp, I was the only E1 in my class. Got to my duly station after that, again, only E1, out of like 100 E3 and belows. What's funny is that between my school and Suty Station, I had Leave where I went home (One of two times I took any) and that guy actually wanted me to work for him, so as to keep the days of Leave. I took the hit in Leave days, rather than do that. That said, I made E5 within my first four years, so I guess there was a happy ending... though it would have been nice to have been paid as an E5 for those 18 months he screwed me out of.

What's his mos?
Stop coddling him and let him become a man. That's it. Get a dog or a hobby.

I can tell you from experience that it is okay to be confused on what you want to do, but it is A LOT better to just do some personal research before talking to a recruiter.

USMC here. I was very wary at first of recruiting in general. I had a bias (from movies like 'Stripes' and 'Private Benjamin') that recruiters were little more than snake oil salesmen silver tongued devils working on a used car lot. ROFL
I'm VERY pleased to report that I was TOTALLY WRONG.

HOOAH!!!
Did he really say hoorah to an army recruiter hahaha
Will Wood yeah I was there. Had he been enlisted, he would be smoked😂
Goodness...
Matt Ward hey I probably already know the answer to this, but if Ranger school isn’t in my contract, is it still possible to go?
Army 2A yes, I don’t know if he’s going to answer or not but I know you can go to Ranger School at any point in your Army Career.
As a recruiter, I have to say the points you brought up are very true. Keep it up!
What about “I just wanna be in the 10th mtn”
GhostlyPirate_ they trynna land in Stuttgart GER.
Recruiter: Oh, the 10th Mountain has cooks. There ya go. *You end up hating the Army.
Hey matt currently in proccess of recruitment, thank you for your service!
Alex Diaz I have a channel sharing my military journey and giving advice to those wishing to join the service it would mean a lot of you Che led it out and subscribed to get my channel going
@Matt Ward I love ur videos. Keep them rollin' my guy.
I’m sorry what?!? My recruiter hasn’t told me that yet lol
Tossed around every possible option. Swearing into MEPS Wednesday in the United States Navy, going to fight hard for a SEAL contract.
The patch with the star and the Indian head. I worked with those guys, I’m in the marine corps and we worked with their irb platoon
That's 2nd ID
I’m assuming you got a TS clearance? If so then yeah that makes sense. I hope you still got it though??
Matt Ward sorry just saw this! Yep and I have kept it active even though I am just a writer now!
And remember he is going to screw you over no matter how close you think you guys are. Buisness comes first.
Its very odd trying to communicate with one because you know they get paid to sell dreams and by signing all the paperwork they're not legally responsible if you crash and burn in the process of chasing your dream alot will bs you and get u excited only to find out you can't join later on.
Thank you for your service
I talked to my recruiter about doing drugs, he was a chill dude and basically said everyone does it so be clean for meps
Didn't think too much about it and ended up being a 25S 1C. I control Satellites.
"Ooo, a Sergeant! Well, I'm not much for formality, and we've got a lot of waivers to push through, so let's get down to business, Carl..."
I am going to talk to a recruiter tomorrow! Thanks for the vid!
Gonna walk in and straight up be like.. "Infantry." and that's it. Because that's what i want.
Well, if you went through with it, i bet they appreciated the brevity.
Yeah, I brought up ROTC with my recruiter he gave me all the info he knew which wasn't much but he pointed me in the right direction and gave me some suggestions on scholarships and possibly reserves with ROTC.
Man they try to get you in on the first day or something haha I went to a recruiting office and I was there to just ask a few questions about the rate I wanted to do and he was handing me a fat stack of paper trying to get me in like chill 😂
Ahh the memories... When i went to army recruiting just for a "few questions" i ended up being there for 5hrs this guy just wouldn't shut up trying to get me in mos that i had 0 interest in and handing me papers left and right
@@observationsincars5083 smh man haha
Ah memories, thanks for all the help I’m now 3 months in my guy.
Congratulations man
